Yes, I Have My Weaknesses, But I’m Focused On Nigeria Project – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that he, like any other person has his own weaknesses but that he is firmly focused on the Nigeria project and its unity.

President Buhari, who received former State Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) at the State House, today, August 9, recalled the passion and zeal for improving the livelihood of Nigerians, which culminated in creation of the political party.

According to him, such passion and zeal have not dwindled even as he called for more steadfastness of Nigerians towards the attainment of the collective goal.

The President said the self-centeredness that led to the loss of about a million lives between 1967-1970 must not be allowed to repeat itself, and that the CPC was founded on the bedrock of patriotism and loyalty to the unity of Nigeria.

“Our main objective is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are human beings. We have our weaknesses, but I can assure you that the patriotism in us is hard earned. We have gone through all the troubles from 15th of January 1966 to date. You know what I mean by this, we have killed a million of ourselves in order to keep this country together.

“I don’t think there can be any practical experience more than that. We are Nigerians, God willing we remain Nigerians and Nigeria will remain one.”

President Buhari urged all members of defunct CPC and political leaders to always be mindful of the larger picture by working towards preserving the unity, peace and integrity of the nation.

The President thanked former chairmen of the political party, which was merged to form the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), for always highlighting the achievements of the government, admitting that some areas will surely get more attention.

“I am delighted to welcome the forum of State Chairmen of the former Congress for Progressives’ Change to State House today. I accord great significance to this visit as it demonstrates a determination and commitment to identify with our administration.

“This visit recalls the solidarity with the successes that we have recorded in critical areas of our society. The visit also affords us the opportunity to discuss other issues of interest to the forum.

“I commend members of this forum and all members of the legacy party-CPC, for their continued dedication to the ideals of democratic governance that we all believed in.

“The doggedness with which we pursued our vision and goals that culminated into the success we recorded remain like bright stars in the history of our dear nation.”

President Buhari said that he is particularly grateful for the “unalterable belief the members of CPC and, by extension the Nigerian electorate, had and still have in me as demonstrated in their unalloyed support for our electoral struggles which reflected in the results that we consistently recorded at the polls over the years.’’

He said that it was the solid credentials that the CPC possessed that gave the party a prime place in the merger that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress.

The President said that other political parties in the merger, include the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) along with some members from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and People’s Democratic Party.

The President said that efforts have been made in appointing some members of CPC in his government, including those in the Federal Executive Council (FEC) like the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Minister of Education, Minister of Water Resources, and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

“I listened to the remarks of your Chairman which highlighted our modest achievements in diverse areas. We shall remain resolute to continue to deliver on the promises we made to Nigerians, and to ensure that we attain greater milestones in terms of economic growth, infrastructural development, provision of security, and the war against corruption, among other responsibilities of government.”

Describing the President as the “Patriarch of the CPC’’, the Chairman of Forum of State Chairmen of the defunct CPC and former Chairman of the party in Niger State, Umar Shuaibu, said the party had maintained all its structures across the country, assuring President Buhari of their loyalty, especially in the forthcoming elections.

Shuaibu commended the President for providing strong leadership over the years, particularly in remaining balanced, fair and above board in electoral issues.

“Before you, the opposition was arrested and maltreated, but it is no longer so,’’ he said, “You did not deny them what they denied you when they were in power.’’

Shuaibu thanked the President for appointing members of the defunct CPC into the Federal Executive Council, as head of agencies and members of Boards.

He said the CPC had always garnered millions of votes in elections across the country, and would support the APC Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Nigerian Govt Complains Of Scarcity Of Healthcare Workers, Blames It On Exodus

Nigerian Federal Government is complaining that the country is now riddled by scarcity of healthcare workers as a result of exodus of same to America and Europe.

“Scarcity of healthcare workers is the primary challenge in the health sector today. The loss of many highly skilled and educated people from the country to the UK, Canada and Australia has become more worrisome to health authorities.”

The minister of State for Health, Ekunmankama Nkama, made the complain today, August 9, through the Medical Director in the Federal Medical Center, Ebute-Meta, Dr. Adedamola Dada, at the 16th Annual Scientific Conference and Fellows’ Congress, organized by the Post Graduate Medical College Fellows’ Association, in Lagos.

“The brain drain phenomenon in the health sector in Nigeria has been noted by the federal government and efforts are already in place to find a lasting solution to the problem.”

Nkama, however, said that some of the possible solutions to reverse the brain drain and increase the retention of medical doctors and dentists included increasing wages.

Others, he said, are improvement in welfare packages, payment of rural allowance for doctors, equipping health facilities, improvement in public infrastructure, increase in retirement age for doctors and other health professionals.

According to the minister, some of the possible solutions to reverse the brain drain and increase the retention of medical doctors and dentists included increasing wages, adding that the Buhari administration is considering special funding for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, to assist in training specialists, the Minister of State for Health, has hinted.

He said that such measure are especially expedient to arrest the level of brain drain in the medical field, even as he said that the Federal Ministry of Health is seeking to collaborate with the college to rapidly deploy simulation equipment and support the proposed regional training centres to strengthen residency training.

In response to COVID-19 pandemic, the minister said that the government, through the Federal Ministry of Health embarked on building and equipping molecular laboratories in all federal tertiary hospitals.

He noted that the infrastructure would help to enhance the capacity to diagnose diseases.

Gov Akeredolu Surprised At Involvement Of Ebira In Owo Church Attack, Kidnapping

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has expressed surprise at the involvement of some Ebira people from Kogi State in the recent St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo and in kidnapping around the State.

The Governor, who hosted the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the government House, led by the Chairman of the Council, Prince Leke Adegbite, confirmed that five people have been arrested in connection to the Church attack.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor had earlier announced the arrest of the masterminds of the attack. They are:

Speaking on the arrest, Governor Akeredolu said that the owner of the house where the attackers stayed before the June 5 attack in Owo has also been arrested.

”Now that the military has announced it, I can tell you that five of them have been arrested now. They are still on the trail of the rest. The home where they lodged in Owo and the person that accommodated them before the attack, has also been arrested.

“We did not spare a moment. I am happy that the Chief of Defence Staff has announced it. We have known for a while but we needed not to come out with it because more works are still ongoing. I can confirm that this arrest has been made. And they are still on the trail of some of them.”

Governor Akeredolu called on leaders of the Ebira community in the state to warn their young ones not to copy the bad venture of kidnapping.”

The Governor said recent reports from victims of kidnap in the state have established that some Ebira indigenes are now involved in the unwholesome act.

He noted that the Ebiras have lived together with the people of the state peacefully for several decades, adding that they have always been supportive and hardworking.

“I want to use this medium to urge our brothers to concentrate on their farming trade. It will be unfortunate to know that the Ebiras in our midst are now involved in kidnapping.

“We are appealing to them not to copy bad thing. The traders selling by the road side should not become informants. We are not fighting them.

“We have seen their numbers, they supported and voted for us during elections. I will call their leaders and talk to them. Our brothers who were kidnapped on their way to Ikare, talk to them. They were taken to Ebira farmsteads.

“For me, we have lived together for too long for this to happen. I am ready to make any effort to ensure that the conviviality that we have enjoyed continues. But we are begging their leaders to urge them not to copy bad thing. They are in our midst , we are surrounded by them. The issue of security is key and it’s dynamic.”

Governor Akeredolu thanked the NUJ in the state for the cooperation extended to his administration, assuring them of sustained efforts at developing the state.

On the issue of Security, Governor Akeredolu disclosed that aside the recent recruitment and training of new Amotekun personnel, 20 hunters and local vigilantes will be trained by the Amotekun corps in each of the eighteen local government areas in the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Ondo State Council thanked the Governor for his support for the management of OSRC and Owena Press PLC, adding that the upgrade of facilities in the two state-owned media outfits is commendable.

He equally appreciated the Governor for the approval of the Weigh-in allowance for journalists and information officers working in the State and Local government service.

Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has ruled out the possibility of dumping the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) either now or in future.

The Governor reacted to insinuation by the spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar 2023 Presidential Campaign Organization, Daniel Bwala, that he (El-Rufai) would move to the PDP before the 2023 elections.

El-Rufai, via his Twitter account today, August 8, wrote: “Thanks @BwalaDaniel but no, thanks. Never ever, not even my corpse will be found in the vicinities of your new-found political party. I still dey laugh!!! – @elrufai”

Communications Commission Discovers New Malware, HiddenAds On Users’ Privacy

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has flagged a new malware, HiddenAds, which has infiltrated Google Play Store that can impact device performance and jeopardize users’ privacy.

In its advisory of August 8, 2022, NCC-CSIRT classified the virus, first identified by the McAfee Mobile Research Team, as high in probability and damage potential.

The malware infiltrated the Google Play Store in the form of several device cleaners or optimization apps.

According to the summary provided by NCC-CSIRT “Upon installation, it can run malicious services without the user opening the app. It also spams the user with irrelevant advertisements. The apps have received downloads ranging from 100,000 to over a million.

“Some of the apps HiddenAds masquerades as are: Junk Cleaner, EasyCleaner, Power Doctor, Carpet Clean, Super Clean, Meteor Clean, Strong Clean, Windy Clean, Fingertip Cleaner, Keep Clean, Full Clean – Clean Cache, Quick Cleaner, and Cool Clean.

“When a user installs any of the aforementioned apps, whether the user has opened the app or not, a malicious service is immediately installed on the device. The app will then attempt to blend into the app tray by changing its icon to the Google Play icon that every Android user is familiar with. Its name will also change to ‘Google Play’ or ‘Setting’. The device will then be bombarded with ads in a variety of deceptive ways, severely impairing the user experience,” the advisory stated.

Anyone that installs the compromised app will experience their device performance suffering significantly, clicking on the ads may result in stealth downloads/installation of other malware, users may inadvertently subscribe to services and be billed on a monthly basis, and the privacy of users will be jeopardized.

NCC-CSIRT advised users to avoid downloading questionable apps or apps they are unsure about while those who have installed any of the identified malicious apps should immediately delete them.

It further disclosed that where the malicious app’s icon and name have changed, it can be identified by the fact that it is removable while the legitimate Google Play app cannot be uninstalled.

The advisory recommended the installation of anti-virus/anti-malware software with a proven track record for detecting and removing malware.

The Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

The CSIRT also works collaboratively with the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risks incidents by preparing, protecting and securing the Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks, problems or related events.

Buhari Thumbs Up For Labour Minister, Ngige For Commitment To Workers’ Welfare

President Muhammadu Buhari has praised the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, for his commitment to the welfare of the Nigerian workers.

According to the President, Dr, Ngige has continually been “creating employment opportunities, stimulating a healthy working relationship between employers and employed, leading negotiations between unions and government, and putting the interest of workers first, especially for their wages, salaries and allowances.”

In a birthday wish for the minister, who turns 70 today, August 8, the President, in a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, acknowledged the foresight, sacrifice and insight of Dr. Ngige in labour laws.

He also acknowledged the minister’s penchant for excellence which drives his interest to always motivate and breed leaders, leaving a legacy of hard work in Anambra State as a governor.

The President recalled that Ngige, as governor, left landmark achievements in infrastructural development, inclusive governance that greatly inspired grassroots participation and accountability that was dubbed: “Anambra people’s money working for the people.”

The President rejoiced with Ngige, who he described as “political leader” that had made many strides and achievements, including impactful governance at both state and national levels.

He said that Ngige brought a lot of passion, zeal and diligence into every responsibility, starting out as a civil servant, with distinguished record of work at National Assembly and State House Clinics, before venturing into politics in 1999, where he has served as party chieftain, governor and senator.

Minister Declares Oil Theft A National Emergency, Says 400,000 Barrels Of Crude Stolen Daily

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has declared oil theft in the country a national emergency, with about 400,000 barrels of crude stolen daily.

The minister explained that the massive crude theft is greatly affecting Nigeria’s capacity to meet OPEC daily quota, saying that the huge loss could cripple the nation’s economy.

The minister, who was in Owerri, Imo State today, August 8, said that Nigeria has now fell from 1.8 million barrels export allocation to 1.4 million barrels.

He told his host, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State that local collaboration is needed to stop the economic bleeding as Abuja could not do it alone.

“This is because the thefts are taking place in the communities that host the oil pipelines,” Sylva said. “As a result, it has become necessary to involve the stakeholders, especially the host communities.”

Imo hosts a sizable amount of Nigeria’s oil deposits.

Responding, the governor gave assurance that his administration would sustain its efforts to arrest the economic sabotage being perpetrated by pipeline vandals.

He described the consequences of crude theft as “very alarming and too much to be tolerated.”

The meeting was part of the nationwide intervention efforts to curb crude oil theft.

“Field Marshal” Samuel Ortom, Benue Guards And The Fulbe, By Is’haq Modibbo Kawu

At a reception on Sunday, August 7th, 2022, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, confirmed his plan to submit an application, to seek President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval for license to procure AK-47 and AK-49 rifles, to be able to arm the newly-established Benue State Community Volunteer Guards.

Governor Ortom told his audience, that he didn’t contravene the Nigerian Constitution, in passing the law which established the new praetorian guard outfit; it was designed to assist the conventional security agencies in the fight against crime, in Benue State. He went further, that “as long as we make laws that are not in conflict with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are right, in establishing the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards”.

There’s not much one can disagree with, in Governor Ortom’s statements, so far. Afterall, many states have similarly established all kinds of security outfits, commensurate with their assessment of their peculiar security needs. There’s the Civilian JTF in several parts of North-Eastern Nigeria, assisting the Nigerian Armed Forces, to confront the Boko Haram insurgency, as well as the more deadly ISWAP. The Southwest States have bandied together, to establish what they call AMOTEKUN.

But with Governor Samuel Ortom in Benue State, in these and related matters, the devil is ALWAYS in the detail. He further told the gathering on Sunday, that although the law which established his new security outfit empowers it to carry certain categories of weapons, “there was a compelling need for them to bear AK-47 and AK-49 to match what the Fulani terrorists have that are killing the people of the state”.

Just about a week earlier, at the launch of the 500-person strong Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, Governor Samuel Ortom, looked very much the part, dressed almost like an old African military dictator; and looked very much like the late Central African Republic’s old dictator, General Jean Bedel Bokassa. And to show how determined he was to give the praetorian guard a semblance of martial seriousness, “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom, did an inspection of the Guard; he even regularly stopped along the inspection, to adjust the epaulette on the uniforms of those he inspected. Certainly, even the old dictator, Bokassa, would have applauded his Benue clone!

We might have joined in enjoying the joke of a democratically-elected Governor’s martial induction, except that this was a very serious affair. “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom meant business; and that business is war; or preparation for war! And if other Nigerians are not thinking of a war, then that’s their business! In Benue State, a “Field Marshall” has arisen, whose openly declared intention, was broadcast on live television.

The CHANNELS TV reporter on ground at the ceremony, asked a question, which went straight to the heart of “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom’s main thesis, the raison d’etre for the new Benue State Community Volunteer Guard. He stated clearly, and I quote him verbatim: “Today, we are sending a message, that Benue State is ready to confront the Fulanis from Niger, from Mali, from Senegal, from Mauritania, from Libya, from Camroun, who want to take over Nigeria as their land”.

When these different groups of the Fulbe decided to “take over Nigeria as their land”, “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom did not tell his listeners and viewers. Rational discourse isn’t necessary in such instances, because the man cannot win anyone with a rational talk; what’s important, is to whip up the most base emotions. It’s not the Nigerian Federal Government, that’s declaring a war against a people, who happen to be spread across West Africa, the Fulbe; but a subnational state, in this case, Benue State, and its Governor!

“Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom wasn’t done though. He added in response to the allegation that the Fulbe from at least five West African,
and one North African, countries, “want to take over Nigeria as their land”, that “we are going to stop it. We did it 2004 and we are going to do it again”. The interviewer requested to know how effective we’re the laws passed against open grazing of cattle in Benue; to the question, “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom effusively retorted that: “We have prosecuted; convinced over 400 Fulani herdsmen who have besieged the state. We have impounded over 24, 000 heads of cattle. Those who paid fines, we released (their cattle) to them. Those who did not pay, we were able to auction (their) cattle. That’s what the law says”.

On his new Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, he stated that “this is another phase of ensuring that we secure our land…I AM READY TO GO TO WAR…Enough is enough; we must secure our land…WE ARE READY TO WAGE WAR AGAINST THIS EVIL THAT IS COMING AGAINST US…We stand strong and are committed, and are ready to spill the last pint of our blood, to ensure the security of lives and property in Benue State”.

This is the broad background, against which “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom, openly declared that he would seek President Muhammadu Buhari’s “favourable consideration”, for the license to procure high grade assault rifles, to satisfy his “compelling need” for his Volunteer Guards, “to match what the Fulani terrorists have…”. And what better person to approve the arms to fight and (possibly carry out a potential genocidal cleansing of the Fulbe from Benue State, than a President, of Fulbe extraction, Muhammadu Buhari! I can imagine that the absurd irony of it all, isn’t lost to “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom.

The Fulbe have become the ultimate “strawman” for “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom; and the most ready one to flog, as a diversion from what many observers of Benue politics, have described as the most wasted years, in the recent history of governance in Benue State. But that’s just one side of the story.

The most dangerous aspect of Ortom’s rhetorics and action, is the systematic manner that he has attempted to cleanse the Fulbe, from Benue. That is along with the setting of communities against each other; the manner that his implementation of Anti-Open Grazing Laws have deprived several communities of the Fulbe, of their livelihood, and in turn, helping to deepen the insecurity that he alleges to be fighting.

It is clear that his approach hasn’t built trust, between the Fulbe and other communities, in Benue State. It is the reason for the establishment of a praetorian guard. As well as his incredible decision, to seek approval to arm them with the AK-47 and AK-49 assault rifles. These only gi to confirm what he stated loudly: “I AM READY FOR WAR”! The only line he kept in his mind would be th logical one, being ready to finish off the Fulbe Benue State! The red herring of the Fulani, as the implacable enemy that he must confront, has conveniently been used to divert attention from the maladministration, that’s alleged to be the lot of Benue State.

A certain Angula Bishop Reuben, recently posted a piece on several online platforms, which compared Borno State, under Professor Zulum and Benue State under “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom.

Reuben noted that: ” After one year in office, Ortom renovated the School of Nursing and Midwives, Makurdi, Benue State, and empowered the youths with plenty of wheelbarrows to hustle”. He added that: “some of his notable achievements after seven years include the failed Amnesty Program; the enactment of the Anti-Opening Grazing Law with a faulty implementation; the construction of less than 1 km of roads in the state capital; the commissioning of a single borehole in Kwande; and the conversion of the Cargo Airport signage to IDP Mega City”.

Reuben was not done: “The achievements of Governor Samuel Ortom in seven years look like the achievements of councilors in the South. This is very shameful to say the least”.

On a final note, Anugla Bishop Reuben summed up the years, under “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom thus: “Benue State has become a brewery of hunger, poverty, unemployment, corruption, and underdevelopment under the leadership of Governor Samuel Ortom despite earning close to 1 trillion Naira through monthly allocation disbursed by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), alongside the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), loans, bailout funds, Paris Club Refund, and other sources from June 2015 to December, 2021.

“Yet our governor still owes teachers more than 13 months in arrears; 8 months for state civil servants; 12 months for local government staff; and 6 years for local government pensioners.

Yet Benue State is still struggling with a very high debt profile and insecurity despite receiving millions of security votes to protect the Benue people”.

“This clearly demonstrates that our Governor is the laziest public servant in Nigeria; he sits idle and waits for federal allocation from Abuja every month, unable to think outside the box in addressing our numerous challenges.”

This unwholesome backdrop, might just be a very convenient reason, why the “Field Marshall” Samuel Ortom, has chosen to carefully rev up the anti-Fulani discourse. It has proved a winner in the past; able to divert attention from the ineptitude in governance. A year to the end of an eight-year tenure, might just become a new opportunity to mount again, the old hobby horse of anti-Fulani hysteria, by the “Field Marshall”, Governor Samuel Ortom.

Okene Chairman Organises Search For Killers Of Madman Based On Fake News

Okene Local Council Chairman in Kogi State, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Muhammad has organized a search for those who killed and burn to ashes, a suspected mentally derailed man over fake news spread about him.
The deceased was reportedly murdered in Okengwe axis of Okene Local Government yesterday, August 7, having being accused of being a ritualist who uses diabolical means to kidnap people, especially children.
The angry Council chairman, in a statement through his spokesman, Abdulmumin Abubakar, accused the killers of the madman for carrying out the action without recourse to the laws of the land or inform the appropriate government officials.
“The youths acted on fake information to execute the alleged criminal and burn him to ashes before the arrival of security agencies.”
He therefore “directed security agencies to carry out investigation on the unfortunate incidence while the District head of Okengwe, some ward heads and community leaders were invited to make statements for the negligence of their responsibilities.”
Abdulrazak stressed that preliminary investigation indicates that the information that led to the murder of the madman was fake, saying that further investigation will revealed the identities of all those who masterminded the jungle justice and will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.
