Petroleum Minister Drops Presidential Ambition, Returns To Work: Women Affairs Minister Too

Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, has withdrawn from the presidential race in the All Progressives Congress (APC), and has returned to work, the same way the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen dropped her Senatorial pursuit in Plateau State to continue with her job at Federal Executive Council.

The Northern Solidarity Group had on May 9, presented the APC’s Expression of Interest and Nomination form to the minister to enable him contest the party’s 2023 presidential primaries.

An official at the ministry who chose to remain anonymous said that Sylva withdrew from the race to support President Muhammadu Buhari in his quest to achieve a robust oil sector.

“He promised to consult the leader of the country and his political leaders the day he was presented with the form.

“He believes that concentrating on his work will attract more investments for the oil and gas sector.

“He has consulted and he believes that the challenges at the ministry and oil and gas sector are enough issues for him to begin to deal with now than going to pursue presidential ambition at the expense of the nation.

“The oil and gas sector is the mainstay of the economy and it is not like any other ministry somebody can just come in and take over.

“It requires some measures of time for the person to understand what is happening in the system.

“For the interest of the industry and the nation, he has decided to wave that personal ambition to see what he can contribute in the remaining part of President Buhari’s administration.

“The implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 is very critical and he wants to continue to make his own contribution to the day-to-day running of the country and support Mr President for robust achievements,” the official said.

Senior Special Assistant to the minister on media, Horatious Egua, has since confirmed that the minister was back to work.

Also, the women Affairs Minister, Tallen backpedalled and returned to her seat on the same ground of contributing to the stride being made by the Buhari government.

FishNet Cautions Against Introduction Of Genetically Improved Tilapia Fish Into Nigeria

FishNet Alliance, a network of fishers in several African countries has  cautioned against planned introduction of Genetically Improved Tilapia fish into Nigeria.

The coalition said that the ‘artificial’ variety, if allowed into Nigeria, would cross breed and eventually lead to extinction of the natural-variety, thereby distorting the nation’s rich biodiversity.

It appealed to the federal government to withhold regulatory approvals for the release of the artificially-altered fish variety until the biosafety concerns around it are addressed and regulatory authorities strengthened.

The group made its position known in a statement issued by Stephen Oduware, Coordinator of FishNet Alliance.

The alliance said the improved tilapia would be introduced following “an inclusive legal agreement” between WorldFish and Premium Aquaculture Limited through a programme on genetically improved farmed Tilapia (GIFT).

It said that, according to the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, “This agreement will augur well for the establishment of a GIFT-based aquaculture industry in Nigeria.

The group noted that Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are collaborating with WorldFish and PAL on this endeavour.

FishNet said the aim of the collaboration is to have WorldFish/PAL GIFT tilapia in Nigerian fish markets by late 2023.

It expressed concerns that apart from the environmental and health challenges, it is unclear which agencies of government has a hand in the transaction.

“Improved Tilapia will not tackle the root cause of challenges in the fisheries sector in Nigeria. Neither will it solve the hunger and malnutrition problems in the country.

“Indiscriminate activities of trawlers lead to overfishing of both target and non-target species of fish; destruction of the mangrove forests amongst other issues – are matters that government should focus attention on.”

“The genes used to improve the tilapia could have come from a variety of organisms, including other fishes, coral, mice, bacteria, or even humans.

“They are basically produced to suit industrial aquaculture models with doubtful regard for possible ecological and environmental concerns.

“Fish farming in Nigeria is done mostly close to the river or in the creeks and there are fears that there could be interactions between the “genetically improved” fish and their relatives in the wild.

“If such fish were genetically engineered, research has shown that releasing as little as 60 fishes into a wild population of 60,000 would lead to the extinction of the wild population in less than 40 fish generations.

“The implication of having genetically improved tilapia released into the wild is not known,” FishNet stated.

The alliance noted that a new study found that genetically-engineered (genetically modified or GM) zebrafish (Danio rerio) had escaped from fish farms in Brazil and are multiplying in the creeks there.

FishNet Alliance quoted researchers as saying that their results “confirm that escapes from aquaculture facilities are common and could bring severe consequences to local fish populations, including endemic, rare, and threatened species.”

They concluded that the production of non-native species should be avoided and transgenic fish should be banned.

“The escape of Genetically-Modified fish from Brazil should be a big wake-up call for our Nigerian Regulators and Government,” FishNet quoted Mariann Bassey-Orovwuje, Coordinator of the Food Sovereignty Program with Friends of the Earth Nigeria and Africa, as saying.

The group recalled that in 2020, Friends of the Earth USA led advocacy against the incursion of genetically modified seafood.

Fishnet noted that Friends of the Earth USA released an updated list of 80 grocery retailers, seafood companies, food service companies and restaurants with more than 18,000 that declined to sell genetically engineered salmon.

FishNet also urged the Nigerian government to provide resources to public fisheries and oceanography institutions for healthy management of the nation’s aquatic ecosystems and resources. nan.

Any Muslim Who Kills Christian Will Not Smell Paradise For 40 Years – Sheikh Gumi

Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has said that any Muslim who kills Christian in Nigeria for whatever reason will not smell the frangrance of Paradise for 40 years.

He said that both Nigerian Muslims and Christians have agreed to live harmoniously together, hence no religious law is applied in the country, being a secular State.

“Hence, anyone who kills a non-Muslim who they have agreed to live peacefully with, will not smell the fragrance of Paradise for 40 years.”

Sheikh Gumi, who was conducting a religious teaching class in his Kaduna Juma’at mosque today, May 15 said that no one is allowed to take laws into his or her hands in Islam, even as he called on his fellow Islamic clerics to impart sound religious tenets to their adherents instead of instigating them to perpetrate ‘reprehensible’ acts.

Reacting specifically to the killing of Deborah Samuel, a female Christian student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, over allegedly blasphemous statements on Prophet Muhammad, the Cleric said: “if we think by killing Deborah, people who are not of the same faith with us will stop insulting our prophet, then we are in delusion.”

According to the Cleric, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was at several points during his lifetime, insulted by non-Muslims, yet he refused to attack or even kill persons who assassinated his characters.

The Kaduna based scholar said that the prophet’s refusals to avenge the insults of non-Muslims were raining on him while he was alive, was because he does not want to be regarded or tagged a killer.

He observed that the best way Muslims can show that they love Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is by adhering to his religious teaching, and totally obeying him, instead of killing people over trivial issues.

Sheikh Gumi, a medical doctor and a retired military officer is the current Mufti and mufassir at the Kaduna Sultan Bello Central mosque. He is the eldest son of late Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, the first Grand Khadi of the old Northern Region who was instrumental to the massive Islamic propagation in Northern Nigeria.

Aisha Buhari Wants Women To Support Female Aspirants To Win Forthcoming Primaries

First Lady of Nigeria, Dr. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has asked women to wake up and support female political aspirants in the unfolding political campaigns across the country to win the forthcoming party primaries and the main elections next year so as to save themselves from marginalization.

She was speaking today, May 15, during a Summit for political aspirants, organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria at the presidential villa, Abuja.
Mrs. Aisha Buhari stressed that the coming election will provide a unique opportunity to assess women’s readiness to change the course of history in Nigeria’s Political terrain.

She said that women need to persevere and strive to approach the political ground with sincerity and decorum, and not allow themselves to be marginalized anymore.  She promised to support all women aspirants through the electoral process.
She charged them to shun violence, jealousy and hatred for one another and believe in themselves, love themselves as well as believe and commit to the party ideals.
“I would like to draw our attention to the need to increase our participation in governance, especially at the state and local government levels. This is important in making ourselves relevant as partners in progress and development.”
Mar. Aisha Buhari called on the ruling APC to consider and implement the 35% affirmative action in the party constitution by ensuring that women’s aspirations are fulfilled, even as she commended the party leadership for supporting women over the years.
Earlier, the APC Women Leader, Dr. Betta Edu commended the First Lady for the support she has been giving women and urged her to do more, especially at the primary elections.

She said that the essence of the summit is to garner moral support for female political aspirants, adding that there is no better person to do this than the mother of the nation.

Atiku Would Not Mind Governing A Nation Of Graves – Prof Okey Ndibe

Atiku Abubakar

A United States-based Nigerian writer, academic and journalist, Professor Okey Ndibe has said that former Nigeria Vice President and current presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar had lost an opportunity to make a human statement when he retracted his earlier one condemning the murder of Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto over alleged blasphemy.

Professor Ndibe, who spoke today, May 15, during the presentation of his critically-acclaimed novel, Arrows of Rain, in Lagos, said that it is time Nigerians began to draw the line and insist on what to accept and what not to.

“He (Atiku) lampooned what would have been a human statement. To become the President of Nigeria is more important to him than to sacrifice every idea. In other words, Atiku would not mind governing a nation of graves.”

The acclaimed writer said that Nigeria is an open wound but that rather than healing it, those who run this country as it were, open the wound more and more.

“It is time that we began to look inwards and say to ourselves what isn’t that we are willing to accept, what impunity. Where do we draw the line and say here and no further.

“So I say to all of us we must decide -individually and hopefully through groups of like minded kindred spirits – where we draw the line. If a politician cannot say that this act is unacceptable and that the perpetrators of it must be held to account we must decide whether we want to give this man a second of consideration as a potential president.”

Atiku had said immediately Debora was killed: “there cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”

But he retracted the statement following reactions from Northern youths who told him that he had lost their support and votes in the forthcoming presidential election. He then reissued another statement saying that the first statement was a misnomer and did “not agree with his orders.”

“This evening, I received information that a post was made that doesn’t agree with my orders. I use this to announce that any post without AA is not from me. May God protect – AA. ”

Blasphemy: Positions Of Law And Holy Quran, By Yushau Shuaib

I was shocked to the marrow when an Imam, during a Juma’at service in one of the mosques in Abuja, ordered his followers to engage in extra-judicial killing.
As a Muslim, not only by birth but also by training and practice, I would be terribly disturbed if anyone disparages my religion or the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) whom we the faithful hold in very high esteem. Yet, in that aggrieved state of mind, I would never take the law into my hand but will rather channel my deep consternation appropriately by reporting such sacrilegious act to constituted authorities for suitable judicial measures.
In recent times, I have had to contend with a series of gory footage of extreme brutalities. I watched a video in which blindfolded captives were thrown into a deep ditch and buried alive by their tormentors who were speaking Arabic. I also saw another video in which a female soldier was violently raped in the presence of her husband, also a soldier, before they were both slaughtered by some unknown gunmen who were speaking Igbo. I have equally watched the latest video in which a female student was stoned and later burnt alive by young men speaking Hausa.
The jungle and vigilante justice of taking the law into our own hands, which is barbaric, un-Islamic and a manifestation of violent extremism, can only lead to great social upheaval and chaos. The geneses of some of the crises we are facing in Nigeria today – especially banditry, terrorism and violent secessionist agitations – were extra-judicial killings involving state and non-state actors.
Sometimes in 2014, an Islamic scholar fainted and later had a stroke during a counseling visitation to a detention camp, where terrorists were kept by security forces. The scholar, in a delegation of other clerics sponsored by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), had encountered a Boko Haram operative, who was notorious as a butcher and known to have slaughtered many people, in captivity.
When the scholar queried the young killer over the motivation for his homicidal sprees, the fellow claimed to have only been following the instructions of his teacher, who also happened to be in custody at that point in time.
When tasked to cite any verse of the Holy Quran or the Hadith – the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – to gauge the level of Islamic understanding behind his thinking, the Boko Haram leader was rather vacuous and claimed to have read all he knew from another Arabic book, and not the holy scripts.
Meanwhile, a judgment in a celebrated case of blasphemy in Nigeria, delivered by a panel of the Supreme Court in October 2007, upheld the death by hanging sentence of Muslim men, Musa Yaro, Abubakar Dan Shalla and others, for the brutal murder of one Alhaji Abdullahi Umaru of Randali village in Kebbi, for allegedly blaspheming against Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
The current Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad and the first female CJN Aloma Mariam Mukhtar both Northern Muslims were among the justices of the apex court who delivered a unanimous judgment on that incident, which happened in Kebbi State on in June 1999.
The other justices that decided on the matter included former CJN, Walter Onnoghen, Sylvester Umaru Onu and George Oguntade.
The convicts had earlier been found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by the High Court in Kebbi and an Appeal Court, before the judgment was finally ratified by the Supreme Court.
In his pronouncement, Justice Tanko pointed out that: “Islam is not a primitive religion that allows its adherents to take the law into their own hands and to commit jungle justice.
“Instead, there is a judicial system in Islam, which hears and determines cases, including the trial of criminal offences and anybody accused of committing an offence against the religion or against a fellow citizen should be taken to the court (either a Sharia or a secular/common law court) for adjudication.
“It is only when a person is convicted and sentenced by a court of law that he will be liable to a punishment which will be carried out by an appropriate authority (i.e. the prison).”
He further stated that the accused persons “were merely a bunch of bloodthirsty militants or religious fundamentalists who were all out to satisfy their vindictive zeal against the deceased.”
The life stories of the peace-loving Prophet Muhammad (SAW) were those of a great man, who was mocked, insulted, defamed, cursed, and physically attacked for his faith in Islam – all of which he responded to with patience, forbearance, mercy, and forgiveness of those who had offended him. There are many authentic Hadiths buttressing his peaceful nature, which should teach Muslims the importance of tolerance, kindness and a sense of brotherliness.
The Qur’an, the Hadiths and Shariah law generally do not endorse or justify gross acts of vigilante violence, jungle justice and extra-judicial killings.
In many verses of the Holy Quran, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and Muslims are enjoined by the Almighty Allah to be patient and to increase their acts of tolerance and worship.
For instance, the following verses in the Quran explain it better:
“Be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.” [Surah al-Muzzamil, 73:10] and “So be patient over what they say and exalt with the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.” [Surah Qaf, 50:39]
The Quran also warns Muslim against revenge when they are insulted. It states that “We already know that your heart is constrained by what they say, so glorify the praises of your Lord and be among those who prostrate.” [Surah al-Hijr, 15:97-98].
“You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves, and you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah, that is of the matters requiring resolve.” [Surah Ali Imran, 3:186]
“When you see those who engage in offensive discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversion.” [Surah al-An’am, 6:68]
“It has already been revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah, they are denied and ridiculed. So do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Verily, you would then be like them.” [Surah al-Nisa’, 4:140]
“They said: We will surely be patient with whatever harm you cause us, and let them rely who would rely upon Allah.” [Surah Ibrahim, 14:12]
As a proud Muslim, I know that one of the great Jihads in Islam is to preach love, peace, and tolerance, and spread the authentic teachings of Islam through the Quran and the exemplary conduct of our greatest role model, the noble Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
It is necessary to caution Northerners in the region that currently faces banditry and terrorism to address the plight of ignorant and jobless youth who, if care is not taken, may declare some days in a week for sit-at-home, just as it regularly happens in the South-East.
Although I have received death threats on social media over my Islamic Daawah of peace and tolerance lately, I nevertheless console myself with the verse in the Quran that says: “Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.” [Surah Al-A’raf, 7:199]
This is the real teaching of Islam, not jungle justice.

Deborah’s Parents In Coma, As Her Remains Are Buried In Niger State

Parents of the killed female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, Denora Samuel are said to have fallen into coma. Debora was killed on Thursday, May 12 by her fellow students for allegedly committing blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Her remains had also been moved to her home town Tunga Magajiya, Niger, and buried. This was confirmd by Pastor Emmanuel Maaaji of the First Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Tunga Magajiya.

Maaaji, the pastor to the deceased’s family in charge of the church in Tunga Magajiya, who spoke by telephone to newsmen today, May 14, said that the deceased family insisted that late Deborah Samuel be buried today because they are not happy with the way the government is handling the issue.

Maaaji said that the late Samuel’s mother “has been unconscious since she heard the news on Thursday, which led to a rise in her blood pressure while the father has been inconsolable”.

He said: “the government called and said that it is not right for the family to take the body in that manner without informing the government of Sokoto State.

“The Sokoto State government told the family that Deborah’s body belongs to the government and not the family.”

Maaaji said that although he could not recollect the name of the person who called, the person claimed to be representing the government of Sokoto State.

Similarly, Rev. Danjuma Doma, Coordinator, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Rijau Local Government area of the state, confirmed that the family and church were preparing for the burial.

“We are all here to give the family support. We will update you on the situation as it goes,” he said.

The state chapter of CAN led by Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora, had condoled the Christian faithful in the state, especially, Rijau Local Government and the family of the late Samuel.

JAMB Releases Results Of 2022 UTM Exam, Cautions Students Against Scammers

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has release the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Head, Public Affairs and Protocol of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement today, May 14, cautioned students to be wary of fraudsters even as he gave details of how they can check the results.

According to him, all a candidate needs to do is to simply send UTMERESULT to 55019, using the same phone number that he/she had used for registration and the result would be returned as a text message.

He said that this is the only process of checking the 2022 UTME results for now as the Board has not uploaded it on its website for obvious reasons.

Dr. Fabian stressed the need for candidates watch out for desperate fraudsters who will send all kinds of messages on how to check their results different from the aforementioned one.

The Board called on all candidates to ignore all such messages on how to check their 2022 UTME results as they are all products of deceit aimed at misleading them.

“The Board, in line with its desire to adhere to the ease of doing business protocol of the government, has emplaced this user-friendly and simplified process of checking UTME results.
Furthermore, this simplified process would also serve to preclude the unconscionable exploitation of candidates by shylock business centres and cybercafes which often take advantage of hapless candidates,” it contained in the statement.

It would be recalled that he 2022 UTME began on Friday, 6th May, 2022 and ended on Friday 13th May, 2022.

I Am The Only One In The Race, Others Don’t Have Brain, Tinubu Boasts

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

“I am the only one in the race, they (other aspirants) don’t know the road. God has designed it that I am the only person you should follow; they don’t have my brain.”

These were the words of the frontline All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu when he addressed APC leaders and delegates at Government House Auditorium in Minna, Niger State capital.

Without mentioning the name of any particular politician, the APC National Leader boasted that he will defeat all of them at the presidential primary election even as he said he had left them to God.

He said that those who are pointing wrong fingers at him are those without track records, asking: “how many governors have they made? How many councilors have they made? How many National Assembly members have they made? I will conquer all of them.”

He prayed that “God Should forgive all of them because they are blind.”

The presidential aspirant assured Nigerians that with a Tinubu presidency he “will eliminate bandits and terrorists from the country,” insisting that “We will overcome this tragedy.

“Bandits will not take over our land with me as president by Gods grace,” adding that “It is now time to change the calendar of bandits, to tell them it is not professional to go into banditry and terrorism and make ransom collection a source of income.”

Tinubu said that Nigeria has the potential to be great but requires the right leadership that will take care of the youths and the elderly pointing out that: “I have the brain, I have the unbreakable team that I used to build Lagos, I will use it to transform Nigeria.”

Commenting on the criticism about his health status, Tinubu said that the job of the president of a country is not to climb mountains or carry bags of cement or a wrestling match, saying that Nigeria was looking for a thinker that will provide security, somebody who knows the value of education.

Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, after showering praises on Tinubu, led the delegates to endorse the former Lagos State governor as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
