Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that many enemies who have been calling for Nigeria’s disintegration will fail.
Obasanjo made it clear that for Nigeria to stay together as a nation is cheaper than the cost of dividing Nigeria.
The former President spoke today, August 27 at the launch of a book in honour of Prelate Sunday Mbang, former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), held in Lagos.
A statement by Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, quoted the former President as saying that the many enemies who don’t want to see the country’s continue to co-exist would fail.
The former president eulogized Mbang for his steadfastness, “which had kept their relationship intact over the years”, describing him as a lover of Nigeria.
“We are here to honour somebody we should honour, and learn from him (Mbang), to show that we genuinely love and appreciate him for the service he has rendered to the Christian community in this country and world over. And to assure him that whatever happens, we will continue to work for unity, peace, security and progress of this country.
“I know that these are things that are dear to his heart. We want to assure you that Nigeria will continue to exist because the cost for Nigeria not to continue to exist is much more than the cost for us to make Nigeria to continue to exist.
“There are many people high and low – who can be described as enemies of Nigeria but they will not win over those who are friends of Nigeria,” Mr Obasanjo added.
Nigeria Immigration Service boss, Muhammad Babandede
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammed Babanded has dropped a hint about move being made to stop foreigners coming into Nigeria to take control of businesses and jobs meant for the citizens of the country.
Speaking to newsmen today, August 27 shortly after a private audience with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential villa, Abuja, the Immigration boss said that this was an additional assignment handed to him by the President.
“Mr. President is always concerned about what we, the security people can do to make Nigeria safer, greater and more attractive.
“As we are all aware, NIS is a security agency that is responsible for borders.
“At the same time, it is an agency that contributes to the ease of doing business. So, today, I have been able to brief Mr. President on what we are doing and he has given me additional responsibilities on what we can do to make this country safer and better.
“Nigerians should be happier that the borders will be safer now than before and efforts will be made to make sure there are no counter-crossing across our borders.
“All persons who are in our country, who are non-Nigerians, we must monitor to see what they are doing what are of benefit to this country.
“As you are aware, each person enters Nigeria with a condition, whether to do a business or to establish a business, but not to take the business of Nigerians.
“So, Mr. President has tasked us to make sure we look at this issue deeply to make sure that Nigerian labour is protected; Nigerian economy is protected, not be taken away by foreigners who just come to do business and take away the money and not to invest.”
On the specific issue of the Chinese presence in Nigerian markets, Babandede described it as “even the biggest issue. Even last Monday, I raised this issue in Kano where they are into retail business in textile shops and other businesses.
“We need to be more patriotic. A situation where citizens give protection
to Chinese and allow them into retail businesses is a crime, a serious one for that matter.”
Speaking on the issue of ECOWAS protocols on free movement of African citizens, the Immigration boss said that he had already notified his officers that every member of the ECOWAS must register after staying in the country for 80 days.
“ECOWAS protocols stipulates that you must follow proper routes and you must register and must have valid passport. It is not about unregulated movements.
“We have prosecuted so many people, jailing them two and three years on
illegal ECOWAS movements.”
Babandede said that he would not reveal some of the new tasks President Buhari handed to him to accomplish towards ensuring adequate security for the country, “but we will do our best to keep Nigeria safer through effective border management and control, and after entry to control so that we can control those who enter our territory without doing something else, which they have not agreed to do when they applied for visas.”
Babandede acknowledged the fact that situations in the borders are contributing to insecurity in the country, “especially our borders with Niger, Benin and Cameroun. It has become imperative to man our borders more effectively.”
The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, has attributed the ₦287 billion profit after tax declared by the Corporation for the 2020 financial year to a number of pragmatic measures, including cost-cutting and none interference from any quarters.
Speaking to newsmen yesterday in Abuja, shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari had unveiled the financial performances of the Corporation and commended it for the feat, the GMD also looked at improved efficiency through business automation and emphasis on commercially-focused investments as other factors that
contributed to the turn-around of the Corporation from a loss of ₦803 billion in 2018 to profit of ₦287 billion in 2020.
Mele Kyari said that the Corporation saved a lot of cost through contract renegotiation by up to 30 percent on the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic, introduction of technology that drastically cut travel cost through reduction in in-person meetings and the general automation of processes that enhanced efficiency across the group’s businesses.
He said that Management’s focus on the prioritization of investment and staff welfare also helped in boosting the Corporation’s overall productivity and bottom line.
Speaking earlier while kick-starting the press conference, the Alternate Chairman of the NNPC Board of Directors and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, who joined the press conference virtually, congratulated the GMD, Management and staff of the Corporation on the feat of posting profit for the first time since its incorporation in 1977.
He said that NNPC’s emergence from loss into profitability, coming shortly after the signing into law of the Petroleum Industry Bill, was a proud moment for him, adding that this was a season of achievements for the nation’s oil and gas sector.
Members of the NNPC Board, Chief Pius Akinyelure, Mallam Mohammed Lawal, Dr. Tajudeen Umar and Mrs. Lami Onayi Ahmed, who were present at the event, also echoed the Minister and congratulated the Management and staff of the Corporation on the feat.
The attention of the Department of State Services has once again been drawn to a falsehood being circulated in the media that it dispersed doctors attending a Saudi Arabia organised job interview at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, yesterday 26th August, 2021. Though this is illogical and does not add up, sections of the media that reported it did not care to verify the news before going to print. No further evidence was also adduced to prove that the DSS carried out such operation at the hotel. It is obvious that the news is only designed to embarrass the Organisation. Journalists and other media practitioners are enjoined to crosscheck their facts and ensure that they do not use their platforms to mislead the public or undermine national security.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is now in the process of pruning down to a manageable level 400,000 Nigerians who applied for employment into just less than 200 jobs which the Commission advertised in 2020.
A statement today, August 26 by the spokesman of Commission, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua confirmed that for a recruitment approval for less than 200 officers, the Commission received almost 400,000 applications from Nigerians.
“Subsequent to COVID-19 pandemic, government suspended the process.”
The statement said that in mid 2021, the Commission obtained approval to complete the process, saying that in order to give every applicant a fair chance and at the same time get the best, ICPC decided to apply online tests to prune down the number of applicants, using international best practices. It said that through the service of a recruitment consultant, the Commission has so far conducted a number of rounds of on-line tests, including some repeat tests to accommodate numerous complaints of non-receipt of notification of tests emails, spam of notification emails, complaints of timing-out of test portal, non-submission of fully completed or half completed tests, loss of access to registered email address of applicants, forgotten passwords, and so on.
“Applicants with further complaints are advised to forward them to complaints@dcsl.com.ng. The Commission at extra cost decided to notify applicants by SMS of the dates of tests and advisory that they should check their mails and spam folders for the test email. “Following this step, only successful applicants – including those with specialized skills that are shortlisted will be further invited for follow up tests, which may be virtual or physical with effect from September, 2021. “The pruning down process will continue until the Commission arrives at a manageable number of qualified applicants that may be further processed by one on one interviews, certificate verification, health certification, character profiling and other assessments befitting of a law enforcement agency. “Applicants and the general public are therefore advised to bear with the Commission in this process.” The statement wanted applicants to take note that the entire process is at no cost to them and asked that they should report all requests for money or promises of facilitation to the Commission through info@icpc.gov.ng or call ICPC on toll free line number 0800 2255 4272 or 0803-123-0280, 0803-123-0281, 0705-699-0190 and 0705-699-0191.
President Buhari has rolled the drum to celebrate the three positive consecutive growth of the Nigeria’s economy, especially the highest quarterly growth in GDP since 2014.
Reacting to the report of the 2021 quarter performance by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in a statement today, August 26 by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, the President
commended managers of the economy for hard work and commitment, asking them to keep at it till the positive development “touches the lives and pockets of the average Nigerian.”
The President took note of the decline in real growth in the oil sector in Q2 2021, compared to a year ago, whereas oil production levels were at 1.62 million barrels per day, compared to 1.67 million barrels per day in Q2 2020.
He said that the lower production output as well as the volatility in oil prices since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic is responsible for the decline in performance of the oil sector.
President Buhari assured that recent reforms and efforts like the conclusion of the Marginal Fields Bid Round, the renewed focus on gas development (including the NLNG Train 7 project, and various pipeline construction projects) as well as the passage and assent to the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), would attract new investment to the oil and gas sector, and create conditions for more robust levels of growth in the future.
Looking to the future, the President assured Nigerians that there is much to be optimistic about, adding that the investments in agriculture and infrastructure will continue, as will on-going efforts to achieve a significant improvement in the security situation across the country.
“There is no doubt that a more secure environment – which the security agencies are working hard to achieve – will spur and energize the shoots of economic progress being seen and felt in the country.”
According to the NBS report, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.01% in Q2 2021 following 0.51% growth in Q1 2021. This growth, which continues the progress of the preceding two quarters, is a continuing trend reflecting Nigeria’s economic rebound following the COVID-19-induced contractions seen in Q1 and Q2 2020.
The non-oil sector is a significant contributor to the economic performance in Q2 2021 with growth of 6.74% in real terms, the fastest growth in the sector since the third quarter of 2014. The contribution of the non-oil sector to GDP increased from 91.07% in Q2 2020 to 92.58% in Q2 2021.
The main drivers of the Q2 2021 economic growth include Trade, Information and Communication (mainly Telecommunications), Transportation, Electricity, Agriculture (Crop Production) and Manufacturing.
The service sector, specifically, recorded its strongest performance in more than a decade, growing at 9.27%.
These main growth drivers of this second quarter performance are reflective of the gains from easing restriction of movement locally and internationally, and the improvement in the business and economic environment compared to the same period in 2020.
Femi Adesina emphasized that the various policies of the Buhari administration, aimed at boosting agricultural production, improving the business environment, and investing massively in infrastructure, are beginning to yield fruit.
‘Equally gratifying is the complementary news of the steady decline in the rate of inflation, over the last few months.
“The positive effects of the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP), which helped fast-track the country’s exit from the COVID-induced recession of 2020, continue to be evident, as some of the sectors driving the Q2 2021 growth have benefited or are benefiting from government-led interventions.
“The successful roll-out of vaccines and COVID-19 protocols has also helped to reduce pressures on the healthcare system and the need for a lockdown.”
A serving Senator, Stella Oduah, representing Anambra North, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Senator Oduah was received into the fold of the ruling party at a brief ceremony held in Abuja today, August 26.
The national chairman of the APC caretaker committee, Mai Mala Buni; Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege; Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Atiku Bagudu and Hope Uzodimma, Imo governor, were present at the event.
A joint security team led by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have arrested no fewer than 15 officers of the FRSC for allegedly extorting monies from motorists on highways across the country.
The officers were reportedly arrested on August 12, simultaneously in Adamawa, Gombe, Ondo and Osun States, with the extorted money on them. This was during the enforcement of the sixth phase of ‘Operation Tranquility’ by officers of ICPC, FRSC and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The operation, aimed at bringing an end to extortion of motorists and other unwholesome practices by some FRSC officials, resulted in the arrest of seven officials along the Jimeta Township Routes and Yola Expressway in Adamawa State.
Also arrested by the members of Operation Tranquility were four FRSC officials in Gombe State, along Gombe Township routes, while four others were arrested within Ikare Township routes in Ondo State.
The team discovered that the officials would sometimes enter vehicles belonging to motorists to negotiate and collect the bribes to avoid being seen by passers-by as well as employ the services of local government revenue collectors as agents to cover their illicit acts.
It was also found in the course of the operation that two patrol teams in Adamawa and Gombe States respectively, were not involved in any corrupt act as they were caught under surveillance checking documentations and ensuring road worthiness of vehicles.
A statement today, August 26 confirming the arrests by ICPC spokesperson, Azuka C. Ogugua and spokesperson of the FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, said that those arrested have been granted administrative bail by the Commission, but that investigations are on-going to ensure that those culpable are appropriately punished.

Many flourishing industries in Kaduna in the 80’s which collapsed towards the end of the last century may return to life soon, with the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Kaduna State Government on utilisation and expansion of gas supply in the state.
Speaking at the signing in Kaduna today, August 26, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, confirmed the central role gas utilisation and expansion will play to the revival of most of the dead industries not only in Kaduna but also Nigeria.
“We all know that Kaduna used to be a hub when it comes to industries. It is our hope that this MoU signing will help provide the gas needed for some of those industries to come back to life,” Kyari emphasized.
He described the moment as another watershed in the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative which is aimed at utilising the nation’s abundant gas resources to power the nation’s economy through a number of strategic gas expansion projects such as the ongoing OB3 and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas Pipeline Projects.
The event which was facilitated by the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) would ensure long-term involvement and support of Kaduna State Government and key gas sector players such as the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company (NGMC) and virtual pipeline companies to provide gas supply assurance to industries within the state on competitive terms.
The NNPC boss said that the Corporation is committed to the commercialization of Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources to support balanced economic growth and job creation across the country.
According to him, the world is transiting to low carbon energy and therefore, the nation’s huge gas resources would continue to be an important source of clean energy for today and the future.
“There is no better way of making cheaper and cleaner energy than delivering gas into the domestic market,” he declared.
The NNPC helmsman said that the Corporation would continue to engage with stakeholders and partners to secure early market and ensure that the economic benefits of the AKK gas pipeline were maximized.
“NNPC is leading this coordinated effort with State Governments and private sector investors to develop demand framework for immediate and long-term gas supply solutions ahead of the completion of the AKK gas pipeline project.”
The GMD expressed gratitude to the Kaduna Government for hosting NNPC’s facilities such as the Refinery complex, the Depot, the ongoing AKK gas pipeline and Independent Power Plant Projects (IPPs).
Responding, Governor Nasiru el-Rufai said that Kaduna State Government is delighted with the prospect of having an additional energy source to power businesses in the state.
“We wholeheartedly welcome this project. Gas provides a cost-effective option for powering factories, homes and vehicles. For the Kaduna State Government, this project is a welcome boost to our investment and job creation strategy.
“It will create jobs and provide skills for artisans who will work on the gas pipelines and associated infrastructure. Beyond that, this project will power the industries that have responded with enthusiasm to our investment promotion campaign.”
Governor el-Rufai particularly thanked the GMD NNPC and the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria for the gas utilization and expansion initiative and zeal displayed by to deliver the project.
“Let there be no doubt that the Kaduna State Government is committed to this MoU and the realisation of its goals in the interest of the people of Kaduna State.”
The MoU was signed by Mallam Kyari on behalf of the Corporation while the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasiru el-Rufai signed on behalf of the State Government.
