Buhari To Media: My Silence Over Infractions Does Not Mean Acceptance

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked media professionals in Nigeria to be wary of publishing news items that are capable of aggravating the bad situation in the country.
He said that the fact that his government had not been complaining over many infractions capable of dividing the country does not mean acceptance.
“That everything is permitted does not mean that there are no rules of correctness, particularly in a polity seriously challenged as ours now.”
President Buhari, in a message to mark the World Press Freedom Day, observed globally every May 3, said: “the media must be sensitive to what we are going through as a country, and anything that would exacerbate the situation, and further inflame passions and emotions, should be avoided.
“The media needs to ensure that while informing, educating, entertaining and setting agenda for public discourse, it does not encourage incendiary words and actions that could further hurt our unity in diversity.”
The President insisted that freedom of the press is an irreducible minimum in a democracy that would flourish, and that freedom must be used responsibly.
According to him, licentious freedom is different from freedom with responsibility and charged the Nigerian media to embrace the latter, rather than the former.
President Buhari pledged greater cooperation with the media to discharge its duties, in line with the theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day: ‘Information as a Public Good.’
He asked those who manage information for government to do everything in public interest, even as he encouraging the media to use the Freedom of Information Act available to make its jobs easier.
President Buhari said that it is very vital to have access to reliable information in an era of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, all to cause discord in society.

The association said that the security operatives said that they were acting at the behest of the Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom.
“They told Odeh that the Governor wanted to see him in connection with his press statements.
“The Igede Media Professionals Association of which Mr. Odeh is President, has been critical of the way Dr. Ortom has handled security issues in Benue State, especially between the Bonta Tiv (where 12 soldiers were killed in cold blood) in Konshisha Local Government and Ukpute (the Igede) in Oju Local Government.
“Dr. Ortom had reportedly threatened to deal with Mr Sunday Odeh over the association’s criticism, adding that in his heyday, he would have since sent an assasination squad to take care of Sunday Egena Odeh.

“He was arrested this evening with his cousin, Johnson Ubeh who was later released when Sunday Egena Odeh showed up.
“The fellows that arrested him said they were police and DSS personnel. They said they were taking him to Governor Ortom in Makurdi.

“As stated earlier, his arrest is not unconnected with the group’s views on the sloppy handling of the crisis between Bonta in Konshisha and Ukpute in Oju Local Governments area of Benue which snowballed into the killing of twelve soldiers.
“Please do all that is necessary to forestall any harm coming to Mr Sunday Egena Odeh.
“We wonder on whose order Mr Sunday Egena Odeh was arrested in the first place given the fact that the courts have been on strike!”

Nigeria’s drug regulatory body, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced that it has approved the Pfizer Biotech Vaccine for emergency use authorization for COVID-19 in Nigeria.

The Director-General of the Agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, who made this known today, April 30 in a live/zoom media briefing in Lagos, said: “We have approved Pfizer Biotech Vaccine for possible use in the country.

“Our COVID-19 vaccine team must carefully review it to make sure that the science behind it is well understood, and also in accordance with our own regulation.”

She said that the vaccine is approved based on different mechanisms known to the agency.

“We used different mechanisms to approve COVID-19  vaccine, and one of it is called reliance, meaning that a more matured regulatory agency across the globe has already approved such vaccine.

“We can use that as a basis for our own review by getting the assessment report, know the peculiarities and our COVID Vaccine Committee will then do their job.

“We also can go ahead to review, if the World Health Organisation (WHO) has given emergency use lifting, meaning they have done their job.

“For Pfizer biotech vaccine,  both cases are through, because more matured agencies have approved the vaccine.

“The approval is not a full approval, it is within the period of getting people vaccinated and gathering of data about the adverse effect following immunisation,” she said.

Adeyeye said that data gathering on vaccine is not limited to NAFDAC, adding that the agency belonged to an organization called International Coalition of Medicine Regulatory Authorities( ICMRA).

“We belong to ICMRA, which is a global gathering of regulatory agencies across the country, where we share our experiences, like that of Oxford Astrazeneca Vaccine.”

NAFDAC director-general said that the agency’s COVID-19 Vaccine Committee has worked to ensure that post vaccination regulation is put in place.

“Our committee started their work to ensure all the Is are dotted and the Ts are crossed to ensure that post vaccination regulatory activities such as pharmacology vigilance or safety monitoring is put in place.

“So, it is not just the vaccination alone, it is what happens after that.”

On the storage of the Pfizer Biotech Vaccine, Adeyeye said the country has what it took to store the vaccine effectively.

“We have the capability because the freezer temperature is now -30 degrees unlike when it was -80 to -60 degrees temperature. So, the storage is not an issue in Nigeria.”

The director-general also disclosed that the agency was reviewing the Johnson and Johnson Vaccine.

We’re Not In Any Financial Stress, NNPC Faults Media Report

Mele Kyari

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has made it clear that it is not in any form of financial stress as reported in the media.

It explained that the revenue projection contained in the letter to the Accountant General of the Federation being cited in the media pertains only to the Federation revenue stream being managed by the Corporation and not a reflection of the overall financial performance of the Corporation.
A statement today,  April 30 by the Corporation’s spokesman, Dr. Kennie Obateru, said that the clarification became necessary in the light of media reports insinuating that the Corporation is in financial straits.
NNPC maintained that it is conscious of its role and is doing everything possible to shore up revenues and support the Federation at all times.
“The shortfall will be remedied by the Corporation as it relates only to the Federation revenue stream being managed by the NNPC and does not reflect the overall financial performance of the Corporation. The NNPC remains in positive financial trajectory for the period in question.”
The Corporation pledged to continue to pursue and observe its cost optimization process with a view to maximizing remittances to the Federation Account.
It would be recalled that NNPC, in a letter to the Accountant General of the Federation entitled: Re: Impact of Hike in Crude Oil Prices on the Deregulated Downstream Sector: Projected Remittance to the Federation Account for April to June 2021, which was inappropriately shared by unscrupulous persons, had projected that it would deduct the sum of N112bn from Oil and Gas proceeds for the month of April 2021 to ensure continuous supply of petroleum products to the country and guarantee energy security.
This has fueled reports of impending revenue shortfalls with dire consequences for the various tiers of government.
NNPC, however, assured  that it would continue to meet its financial obligations to the Federation.
