NCS Controller in Imo, Kayode Olusemire, who displayed the seized items to news men today, June 25 in Owerri, said that the items seized including 2,682 bags of foreign 50kg rice, 10,002 cartons of palmolein oil, 3,122 live ammunition for pump action rifles and 300 used and expired tyres.

Others are Marcopolo bus, a Toyota Sienna, Toyota Sequoiar,  Nissan Pathfinder and a brewery truck, among others, used in conveying the smuggled items.

Olusemire said that the items were intercepted in Abia, Imo and Rivers, adding that operational activities were carried out simultaneously in other states of the federation.

The state controller who described the activities of smugglers as “unfortunate,” added that it was inimical to the economy and safety of Nigeria.

He advised the people to take advantage of the current farming season and Nigeria’s arable land to grow crops, and emphasised the need for patriotism and selflessness.

”Nigeria is blessed with arable land and in this farming season, we should be planting rather than smuggling. Let us eat what we produce and produce what we eat.

“It is quite pathetic that at a time when the whole world is putting heads together to conquer a ravaging pandemic, some persons are busy smuggling goods.

“This is inimical both to our economy and our safety.

“These are trying times. So, we have to be patriotic and eschew selfishness, greed and  dishonest gains,” Olusemire said.

He said that the NCS was working in close synergy with other security agencies in the fight against smuggling.

Olusemire called on members of the public to provide the service with useful information that would lead to the confiscation of contraband goods

Court Ruling On Ajaokuta, Koton Karfe, Lokoja: Comedy Of Error, Greed,  By Buhari Sani Omolori

Attah igala

The 21st-century mind is expected to be the most refined, most coherent and most advanced in knowledge. That is why it is surprising to see a Federal High Court ruled out of ignorance and to see a king heavily burdened by expansionism, and constantly fanning dangerous fires amongst people who have peacefully lived as neighbors.

His Royal Majesty, the Attah Igala, Ameh Oboni relied on the supposed treaty of 1841 to lay claim to Ajaokuta, Kotonkarfi and Lokoja lands. If this were not putting the cart before the horse, then he should have established ownership of the land which in turn would have given the right to cede or sell. You cannot sell what you do not own. The said treaty never came into effect.

I am not sure if the present Attah were as informed as Attah Aliyu Obajeh who knew that The Queen, upon discovering the fraud in the deal, declined to sanction it. In his misguided letter to General Sani Abacha in 1995, Attah was  well aware that in the deal, the Queen reserved the right to modify or annul the deed of secession and equally knew that the British foreign office had agreed with Lord Aberdeen that the treaty with the chief of igala should not be sanctioned for the simple fact that Attah had no control over the claimed land, and therefore the Queen sought protection for her console from the Etsu of Bida, who was in charge of Lokoja. Where was the Attah when the Etsu gave permission to Dr. Balfour William Baikie in 1859?

The areas around the confluence of the Niger Benue river (Lokoja) were inhabited by fishermen from Bassa Kwom,  Ebira Mozum, Bassa nge, and the Oworro people. The jihadist, under the banner of the Etsu of Nupe Mammadu Shaba, swept across Lokoja in 1839, pushing down the Bassa nge, Bassa kwom and Ebira mozum people to southeast of the Niger- the present day Bassa local government, in which they settled independently of the Attah of Igala. To date, these people are independent of Attah of Igala. According to Samuel Ajayi Crowder, by 1854, the natives of Mount Patti were forced by the jihadist to abandon their stronghold (S.A crowder, 1970, 97).  Could Attah, who wasn’t in control of Bassa, have had the stomach to confront jihadist for the right to Lokoja?

By 1897, the Royal Niger Company conquered Bida and all previous treaties would have been nullified. In 1917,the British Administration of the Northern Protectorate appointed Alh Ibrahim Onoruoiza,  who took the title of Attah , as the leader of Ebira.  Alh. Ibrahim Onoruoiza appointed his brother, Alh. Yakubu Wokili to administer (collection of tax and orders) Lokoja in his stead. Alhaji Yakubu Wokili ruled from Atta’s Palace in Lokoja. The Palace is still standing there today. Lokoja was later moved in 1946 from Ebira (Hima/Kogi Central) division to Kotokarfi (Ebira Igu) division to form Kwara Federated Native Authority with Lokoja as headquarters.  Do the Attahs of Igala have a footprint in Lokoja or is their only relic the paperwork of unsanctioned treaty? Attah’s fabrication of 1841, which some of his progenies are very much proud of today, its a shame.

Going by the Igalas’  narrative that Ajaokuta denotes the stone market or market on the rock, the said market came to life in the early 20th century, when the UAC, John Holt and G.L Kaiser established produced buying station, where our traders exchanged farm produce for iron slabs and textiles among others. On the other hand, the  settlement of our people in Ajaokuta dates back to the 17th century. Several ancient towns were founded ( Ukpake, Ohungere, Obangede, Ohuovene, Ukako, Inare among others). It was in this same 17th century that the first paramount ruler of the Igalas came from Jukun to establish the Atahete dynasty. The leadership of Ajaokuta in terms of taxes and policing has always been

by the Ebira Native Authority, with  Okene as headquarter.

In the 80s, the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Alh. Muhammad Sani Omolori, officially opened the Itobe (the hunting ground) market for his people on the eastern flank of the Niger River. Such significant foothold in the eastern flank of the river Niger (Ofu Local Government) will continue to be the aspiration of Attah in Ajaokuta. This, however, never prompted Ohinoyi to incite his people in declaring any part of  Ofu as part of his kingdom;a common trend in Attah Ameh oboni’s antecedents, but the pockets of igalas in Ajaokuta are not that fools.

The greatest authority in Igala’s history,J.S Boston, in his book ‘The Igala Kingdom (p.102) referred to Itobe and other villages (Bassa) in the eastern bank of the Niger River, which was in sharp contrast to the igalas, as Igala by assimilation and not by origin. According to him, ‘’The greater part of the settlers who founded these clans are one or other of three major divisions of Ebira tribe from panda on the Benue, kotonkarfi (Igu) on the left bank of the Niger or from the  Hima group whose settlement runs inland from Ajaokuta on the right bank of the Niger”. The Hima group are the present-day Ebira people of Kogi Central.

The Igalas in 1976 pressured the Irikefe panel, demanding to be excised from Kwara to join Benue, citing the river niger as the natural boundary and Yoruba’s domination. They left Kwara with hope to dominating the Tiv in Benue but they were not that fortunate. They ran to join us in Kogi after losing their proposed Okura State, citing reasons such as being part of old Kabba province and also hoped to dominate with claim of 54% of the population. However, the 1991 provisional census figures proved them wrong. But the Ebira people whose hospitality is legendary didn’t find it hard to give the igalas their first governor but also paved the way for them to be the chairman of the Council of Chiefs. After all, we were governor in old Kwara, and at the time had illustrious sons in top positions in the federal government (I.G & Chief of Army Staff)

But we were soon to realize the extent of their greed in their appointments. even though over 70% of the internal revenue comes from Central. They didn’t stop there;the Specialist Hospital we inherited from Kwara was moved from Obangede to Igala. Racism couldn’t be more pronounced.

Sen. Ahmadu Ali in his recent publication, claimed to have been putting together documents used in court for the past 30 years, yet Ajaokuta didn’t feature in their proposed Okura State of less than 30 years. He made the assertion that they control all the way to southern Kaduna and how all Kogi State belongs to the Attah. How unreasonable will it be should Oba of Benin lay claim to the entire igalaland that was firmly in their control during the time of Oba Esigie in 1515 all the way to the 17th century, or the Oyo empire tries to reclaim her former territories, including Egbaland, Ilorin, or if the Sokoto Caliphate does the same. Such attempt today will undermine the sovereignty of our nation and will only take us back to the stone age. Today, such claims by the igalas are even more dangerous and laughable, as they have neither root nor history in these areas.

The government should review the position of Attah as the chairman of the Council of Chiefs as he is noted for inciting conflicts. In 2018, thugs were brought in from baji by his loyalists to fight a group of igala’s over the right to a fishing area and many died. Today He is involved in land grabbing in Ofu Local Government precisely Itobe and clashes are ongoing. At several points, he tried to cajole the igalas living in Ogodo ward (Ajaokuta) to declare part of it as part of his kingdom. As a result,he clashed with former governor Idris Wada. Such a leader should not lead in the State. If the igalas did not see the curse that follows the ruling class, we kogites saw the danger of having Attah as the chairman of the traditional council.

From time immemorial, our people are republican in nature, and this was why they moved away from the authoritarian system of Jukun empire to establish a decentralized system with chiefs as representatives in communal affairs. Such a system conforms to modern-day democracy. Our people fought the invading Fulani jihadists and kept them at bay. History is repleted where we humbled oppresors. I have no doubt that our people will protect our lands with whatever it will take.

Nigeria In Talk With World Bank, Others, To Raise $6.5 Billion For Power Sector

Nigeria is continuing its discussions with the World Bank and other multilateral lenders to raise $6.5 billion, even as it had secured $750 million support from the International Development Association an arm of the same World Bank.
The Multilateral Institution, in a statement in Abuja today, June 24, said that the target was to achieve financial and fiscal sustainability and enhance accountability in Nigeria’s power sector. It said that about 47 per cent of Nigerians did not have access to grid electricity and those who have access, faced regular power cuts. According to the bank, the economic cost of power shortages in Nigeria is estimated at around 28 billion dollars, which is equivalent to two percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
It said that getting access to electricity is one of the major constraints for the private sector according to the Ease of Doing Business report, adding that improving power sector performance, particularly in the non-oil sectors of manufacturing and services, would  be central to unlocking economic growth post COVID-19.
The statement quoted Shubham Chaudhuri, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, as saying: “lack of reliable power has stifled economic activity and private investment and job creation. This is ultimately what is needed to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty. The objective of this operation is to help turn around the power sector and set it on a fiscally sustainable path. This is particularly urgent at a time when the government needs all the fiscal resources it can marshal to help protect lives and livelihoods amid the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The bank said that PSRO would provide results-based financing to support the implementation of the Government’s Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP). It further said that the PSRP was a comprehensive programme to restore the power sector’s financial viability, improve service delivery and reduce its fiscal burden.
“The PSRO is expected to increase annual electricity supplied to the distribution grid, enhance power sector financial viability while reducing annual tariff shortfalls and protecting the poor from the impact of tariff adjustments.
“This will enable the turnaround of power sector while helping the Federal Government to redirect large fiscal resources from highly regressive tariff shortfall financing towards critical crisis-responsive and pro-poor expenditures. It will also increase public awareness about ongoing power sector reforms and performance. Specifically, the PSRO will ensure that 4,500 mwh/hour of electricity is supplied to the distribution grid by 2022 by strengthening the regulatory, policy and financing framework. It will also enhance the accountability and financial viability of the sector, helping the sector create a track record of sustainable operation necessary for unlocking much needed private investments in the future,” the Bank said.
Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed told an investor call that the World Bank will meet on the Nigerian funding request on August 6th and that the government is also in talks with regional lender Afrexim Bank for a new loan.
In the presentation document, Zainab Ahmed said the government needed $6.5 billion, did not plan to issue a Eurobond this year, and would draw $150 million from its sovereign wealth fund to augment revenue disbursements.
In April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved $3.4 billion in emergency financial assistance for Nigeria to support its response to the coronavirus pandemic.
But Fitch Rating Agency has warned that a sharp rise in Nigeria’s sovereign debt and a ballooning financing gap could trigger a rating downgrade. The global ratings agency downgraded Nigeria to “B” in April with a negative outlook from “B+” citing aggravation of pressure on external finances.

We’ll Not Allow Igala To Use ‘Judicial Abracadabra’ To Rob Us Of Ajaokuta – Ebira Youth

Ebira youth in Kogi Central Senatorial zone, under the umbrella of Ebira Youth Congress (EYC), has warned that members will not stand aloof and watch Igala people, at the Kogi East Senatorial zone, to use what it called “judicial abracadabra” to rob Ebiraland of Ajaokuta where the nation’s steel project is located.

At a press conference yesterday, June 23, at Utenyi in Eganyi District of Ajaokuta Local Government Area, the EYC called on all the people of goodwill to call Igala people to order,  even as it promised to embark on efforts at averting ethnic conflicts “being orchestrated by the inconceivable claim of ownership of Ajaokuta land by the Igalas.”

In a text read by the President-General, Malam Baba Abdulrazak, the EYC, described the recent judgment ceding Ajaokuta to Igala Kingdom as “one provocation too many!”

The full text of the conference is reproduced here:

We, the leadership of the youths of Ebira, under the aegis of Ebira Youth Congress (EYC), the apex socio-cultural organization of the youths of Ebira ethnic nationality both at home and in diaspora, have critically reviewed recent developments in Kogi state and deemed apt to call this press briefing to bring to your knowledge and indeed, that of the whole world, the mindless and relentless efforts by our neighbours at the eastern flank of Kogi state, the Igalas, to rob us of our God-given lands and other resources through judicial *“abracadabra”! This conference is in furtherance of our efforts aimed at averting ethnic conflicts being orchestrated by the inconceivable claim of ownership of Ajaokuta land by the Igalas.

The recent incongruous judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, which curiously ceded Ajaokuta, Lokoja and Koton Karfe Local Government Areas to the Atta Igala is one provocation too many!

It should be placed on record that since the creation of Kogi State, the Igalas have been behaving as *IMPERIAL LORDS; as if they own the entire state by CONQUEST! This nauseating attitude of our brethren from across-the-Niger has only but succeeded in engendering needless acrimony and mutual suspicion among component ethnic groups, with their attendant negative effects on the peace and development of the state.

The rest of Kogites, particularly Ebira youths still nurse the wounds resulting from the acute denial and gross marginalization Ebira were subjected to by successive Igala-led regimes. We will not forget in a hurry how the late Prince Abubakar Audu led-government created the botched lopsided local government councils that sought to subjugate other ethnic groups in the state to Igala dreamed hegemony.

With heavy heart, we recall that this misrule sent some of our vibrant youths to their untimely graves when they protested against the injustices; not to mention our youth leaders who were unjustly detained and man-handled alongside other unimaginable deprivations meted on us by the referenced past governments.

This time around, Ebira and her youths are wiser not to allow anything that will lead to disequilibrium in the peace and even -development of the state that Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration has been pursuing even at the detriment of his personal comfort and that of his immediate community. *To say that we have conceded too much to the Igalas to appease their greedy gods will be an understatement!*

At this juncture, we would like to ask the Igalas and their monarch the following pertinent questions: *At what point in their history did they realize that the land of Ajaokuta was part of their kingdom? This is because: 1. They, Igalas, were, first in Onitsha province; 2. They were in the defunct Kabba province and ditto Benue State before the birth of Kogi state. Interestingly, in all of these sojournings, the Igalas never knew they had Ajaokuta to pack in their journey bags. Or is that the Igalas also forgot to mention anywhere in their relatively recent agitations for the creation of Okura state that Ajaokuta belonged to them? This our brothers’ greed and provocations know no bounds!*

This mad territorial ambition was what killed the late Saddam Hussein of Iraq when he sought to annex Kuwait as part of the old Babylonian empire in the twentieth century. We hasten to caution the Igalas to tame their greed!

Let our Igala neighbors be told that Ebiraland was never a conquered land and cannot be available now through judicial conquest or any other unholy manipulations.

Whoever thinks that the youths of Ebiraland will stand aloof and watch this broad daylight robbery unchallenged must be living in a fool’s paradise- such a person or persons are free to remain asleep.

It will do them (the Igalas) good to know how the Ebiras and Ebira Kotos left Idah to their present abode. If they do, it will be clear to them that Aajokuta was never part of their kingdom.

This insane territorial claim has no place in modern day national and international boundary management and administration. The Igalas must be told in an unambiguous terms!

As the chairman of the Kogi State Traditional Council, the Atta Igala occupies a fatherhood position to the entire state and ought not to have been seen chasing and championing a divisive agenda; an agenda that is antithetical to the unity efforts of Governor Yahaya Bello. The Ebira Youth Congress will like to place on record the maturity, so far, displayed by His Royal Majesty, Alh. (Dr.) Ado Ibrahim, the Ohinoyi Ebira in this sensitive matter. He has been able to calm nerves and thread the part of peace and civility. And he himself has remained calm and calculative even in the face of this unwarranted provocation. That is leadership,  and we are proud of this Royal father!

We are forced to ask: where lies the Atta’s moral standing to continue to preside over the Kogi State Traditional Council?* Against this background, *we call on the appropriate quarters to, in the interest of peace and togetherness, immediately institutionalize a rotational template for the chairmanship position of the Council.

We must understand that, in the distribution of both material and human resources in Kogi State, *there are enough for every tribe’s needs and not enough for the Igala’s greed!*

Conclusively, as a peaceful people, the youths of Ebiraland would like to once again reiterate their determination to remain unprovoked and will continue to toe the part of peace and civility in seeking redress as the state governor, Alh. Yahaya Adoza Bello has pleaded.

Ebira youths, be assured once again that as the Lord Lives, this *procured “corona 2020” judgment against our ancestral heritage shall not stand. No matter how long it takes, justice has always prevailed against injustice. And this will not be different.
