The Presidency has confirmed that there is a mass staff purge ongoing as a way of cutting down cost of running the government, even as it waved off media reports of misunderstanding between President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
In a statement today, November 8, Senior special assistant to the President on media and publicity , Malam Garba Shehu confirmed that there is an on-going “unprecedented overhaul of the nation’s seat of government, arising from which a number of political appointments have either been revoked or not renewed in the Second Term.”
Garba Shehu said that the exercise, which has been ordered by the President, is to streamline decision-making, cut down multiple authorities and reduce the cost of administration. He said that the exercise is also an appropriate response to the general perception that the Presidency has an oversized and bloated workforce which acts as a drag on efficiency. “As may have been noticed by discerning members of the public, a number of political appointees among the few that served in the office of the President were not returned for the Second Term.
“The office of the Vice President, His Excellency Yemi Osinbajo has, in compliance with the directive of the President, equally been shed of a number of such appointees. “In carrying out these exercises, the overriding objective is to save taxpayer money and deliver needed service to the public. As far as the President is concerned, there is no scope for an excuse for administration after getting a huge mandate to run the country for four more years.
“In the light of this, the Presidency wishes to strongly deny rumours of a rift between President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. The relationship between the two leaders remains excellent and trusting. Together, they will script a glorious future for the nation.
“The media reports of a soured relationship are originating from the minds and mouths of mischief makers, who are desperate for entertaining stories from the Aso Rock Villa with which to titillate the public. This ulterior motive is the basis of the wrong interpretation given to the recent exercise in the Presidency. “There has been a streamlining of staff going on for a while. The President has always had fewer staff than the Vice President, and there were always plans to reduce the number of staff at the Villa.
“The streamlining was not personal or targeted to undermine the Vice President’s office, as the so-called insider sources quoted by the media appear to make it seem.
“The President is in absolute control of his government. The media should stop attributing non-existent powers to some people. There cannot be anyone too powerful for President Buhari to control.”

So, it is an endless project. He shouldn’t throw blame.” The ruling party’s chairman insisted that the construction of runway is an endless project, even as he advised the governor to stop accusing the Federal Government of not granting license to the airport to operate. “You know the fact that Bayelsa airport has been flooded. Is it President Muhammadu Buhari that flooded the airport? ”Because the runway is below the ground level, they ought to have carried out proper survey. So, the runway is flooded with water because it was not built properly. “Now, if President Buhari was to stop it, what stopped Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa by himself? “We challenge Dickson to use his own plane to test-run and land on that airport. ”We challenge Dickson to prove that when the airport was flooded, that the flood was caused by Buhari.”

Abuja division of the Federal High Court has cleared the coast for the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Natasha Akpoti to participate in the November 16 governorship election in Kogi State after holding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lacks the constitutional powers to disqualify her from contesting the election. In her judgment today, November 7, Justice Ogunbiyi-Giwa held that INEC has no power to disqualify any candidate for an election as it is the exclusive preserve of a competent court of law. She relied on the provisions of sections 31(1) and 83 of the Electoral Act which says that INEC cannot disqualify or reject candidate nominated by a political party for an election is aimed at ensuring that it does not lie within the executive realm of INEC to determine who participates in an election, adding that the intention of the law is to make INEC a truly unbiased umpire. She, therefore, ordered the electoral body to include her name and that of her running mate, Adams Khalid on the ballot paper for the November 16 polls. The judge further granted reliefs 1-7 of the plaintiffs and ordered INEC to include the names of the governorship and deputy governorship candidate of the SDP as well and the party’s logo on the ballot in the November 16 governorship polls in Kogi State. Akpoti, his deputy, Adams Khalid, and the SDP had approached the court to challenge their exclusion from the 2019 Kogi State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The commission had refused to accept the candidature of Khalid in replacement of the earlier nominated deputy governor, Mohammed Yakubu, on the grounds that Yakubu was not qualified in the first place to be fielded as a deputy governorship candidate in the election on account of his age. But in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1129/2019 and filed on October 3 by their lawyer, Ola Olanipekun SAN, the plaintiffs sought a declaration of the court that INEC’s declaration vide a letter with reference number: LEG/PP/23/T/107 that the nomination of Mohammed Yakubu as the deputy governor of the SDP in the November 16 gubernatorial election was “invalid” on the grounds of qualification was ultra vires and therefore null and void.
