The Presidency has made it clear that the Federal Government has no plan to take over Kano State through the declaration of the State Emergency.
This is coming on the heels of allegation by the National Leader of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, that the government of President Bola Tinubu is planning to declare a state of emergency in the State.
The Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement today, June 18, described Kwakwaso’s allegation as “baseless and a mere rumour.”
Bayo Onanuga explained that there are no circumstances that would warrant declaring a state of emergency in Kano State, adding that such an extreme measure cannot be taken without the involvement of the National Assembly.
Senator Kwankwaso had accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) federal government and the Nigeria Police Force of bias in the Kano Emirship tussle, saying that the government is plotting the imposition of a state of emergency in the State.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, Ussain Gumel, had denied Kwankwaso’s allegation of bias in the emirate crisis.
The police boss insisted that the police is just carrying out its mandate of protecting lives and property.
Gumel said that they have a duty to protect both emirs while maintaining neutrality in the matter.
He said that the police had so far received multiple court orders on the emirate tussle, and said that such orders have been forwarded to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice for review and directives.
