The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Emeka, for allegedly raping and killing a pregnant woman, Mrs. Chigbewejim Steward, the wife of an assistant pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Abarikpo community.
The suspect was arrested 15 months after the incident, which occurred on February 12, 2023. The victim’s husband, Mr. Lawyer Steward, confirmed the arrest and stated that Emeka had quarreled with his wife before the incident.
According to Steward, Emeka and his accomplices broke into their home, abducted his wife, and took her to their den, where she was gang-raped and strangled to death. The victim was 5 months pregnant at the time of the incident.
Two other suspects were arrested alongside Emeka, according to a senior police officer privy to the development. The police spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, could not confirm the report at the time of going to press.
The victim, Mrs. Steward, was known for condemning criminal and cult activities in the community, and her death was a shock to the community.
The husband, Mr. Steward, has called on the government to intervene and ensure justice is served.
