It was learnt that despite Obasanjo’s recent claim that he has no preferred candidate, the former president had, prior to the launch of his movement, consulted widely, particularly with General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulasami Abubabar and General Aliyu Gusau and ended up with Kwankwaso as the candidate who they believed has the popularity to challenge Buhari in the North West, especially in Kano, where Buhari has millions of die-hard supporters.
Information had it that already, Obasanjo and Babangida have been able to build a formidable coalition of former military leaders, with General T.Y. Danjuma joining the click despite being a sworn enemy of Obasanjo.
Also, Obasanjo has gotten Senate President, Bukola Saraki and House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara to commit to the Third Force.
Saraki and Dogara, alongside their supporters across the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as minority Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the National Assembly will in the coming weeks, move in droves to the Third Force which is being scheduled to metamorphose into the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the political party that may be the new vehicle that Kwankwaso will ride on to challenge Buhari.
Sending the danger in the plot, President Buhari recently reached out to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to help resolve issues that have fractionalized the party and pitched leaders against each other.
But Kwankwaso, who is also being wooed by the PDP, may be fighting the biggest battle of his political career as powerful forces in the APC in Kano led by the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Ganduje are hell bent on prematurely ending his political career.
