When Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo mounted the leadership as Executive Governor of Kogi State on January 27, 2024 (exactly a year today), the signs showed the direction he wanted to go in the governance of the state.
Though there seemed to be an early morning stumbling block in the form of legal battle waged by the candidate of the opposition’s Social Democratic Party (SDP), Murtala Ajaka in the contest over who won the November 11, 2023 election, the new governor, elected under the umbrella of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), however did not allow such stumbling block to distract him from focusing his eyes on the ball.
Though many outside the state might have regarded him as a greenhorn in politics and leadership, a lot of people who knew his pedigree, having been nurtured quietly by the system, and groomed by the immediate past executive governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, expected the high standard of performance he had exhibited in the last twelve months.
One of the first challenges that confronted him, which was widespread across the country, in particular, many parts of the North, was insecurity.
It began on May 13, 2024, less than four months after he assumed office, when bandits raided the Confluence University of Science and Technology in Osara, kidnapping several students who were studying for their first-semester exams
Unfortunately, two of the kidnapped students, James Michael Anajuwe, a 100-level Information Technology student, and Musa Hussein, a 100-level Software Engineering student, were killed by their abductors despite negotiations with their parents
Initially, 21 students were rescued, and later, the remaining eight kidnapped students were also rescued through a joint effort by the Kogi State Government and security agencies.
The university declared a three-day mourning period to honor the memory of the two students who lost their lives.
Governor Ododo rose to quench the fear that the men of the underworld were trying to inject in the minds of the populace, particularly students，by first, visiting the campus of the institution, and recruiting more security people, including, largely, local hunters.
As a matter of fact, since assuming office on January 27, 2024, Governor Ododo has prioritized the safety and security of the citizens as a cornerstone of his administration, for, without security, all other development efforts would result to zero.
Under his leadership, and because of the proactive measures he put in place, the State experienced a notable decrease in crime rates. A sense of safety and security were instilled in the populace. Governor Ododo’s approach to enhancing security is comprehensive, involving collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community engagement and the implementation of technology-driven solutions.
One of the key achievements of Governor Ododo’s administration is the strengthening of law enforcement agencies within the state. Increased funding and resources have enabled the police force and other security outfits to operate more effectively, enhancing their ability to combat crime.
The governor has also advocated for better training for these agencies to further improve their operational capabilities.
Governor Ododo’s Community Policing Initiatives have been particularly successful in fostering cooperation between law enforcement and local communities. By establishing neighborhood watch groups and encouraging citizen participation in reporting crimes, the administration has created a safer environment throughout the state. These initiatives have resulted in a noticeable decrease in crime rates in various parts of the State, earning the admiration of the people.
The Government Ododo was able to introduce surveillance systems and emergency response applications which have contributed to improve monitoring capabilities across urban areas. More impressive Ododo’s government has found it necessary and compelling to collaborate with Federal Security Agencies, such as the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS). Joint operations of such security architecture has led to addressing the menace of kidnapping that plagued various regions within Kogi State before the administration came on board. These collaborations have resulted in successful operations that have disrupted criminal activities within the major flash points in the state.
It will be recalled that shortly after the combative efforts through the Governor’s efforts Usman Ododo was glad to receive rescued CUSTECH students and subsequent provided gadgets for trained 1,050 Hunters to Support Security operations in the state is fast breading the desired results.
Earlier in his administration, the Governor unveiled new security vehicles, for security operatives in the state. He restated his Government’s commitment to security of all. The Governor also unveiled Metropolitan Quick Response Squad to tackle security challenges in the state.
All of these efforts have continued to make Kogi State inhabitable for criminals elements and the state is gradually becoming a safer habitat for peace loving Nigerians and foreigners to be conducting their business activities without any fear of harassment, intimidation, kidnapping or loss of lives and properties. Kogi State is fast becoming the leading safest state in Nigeria.
On a general note, just a year down the line, Governor Ododo has been able to demonstrate unparalleled leadership and a deep commitment to the progress and prosperity of the state.
His one year in office has been marked by groundbreaking achievements across many sectors of the economy, making him a beacon of hope, a unifying force and the pride of Kogi people.
Governor Ododo’s focus, empathy, and unwavering dedication have not only earned him the love and admiration of the people but also cemented his reputation as one of the most impactful governors in Nigeria’s political landscape.
From infrastructure development to youth empowerment, and from healthcare to education, his administration has achieved feats that many would have deemed impossible in such a short time.
Governor Ododo’s one year in office has been nothing short of transformative.
In the agricultural sector, his administration has boosted food security by providing modern farming tools, fertilizers, and support for smallholder farmers, placing the state at the forefront of agricultural productivity.
His strides in healthcare are equally commendable, with investments in hospital infrastructure, medical equipment, and community health outreach programs ensuring that no one is left behind.
Education has also seen a dramatic improvement under his leadership, with better schools, scholarships for students and training for teachers, creating a solid foundation for the state’s future.
