Ex Brazilian Football Star, Robinho, Jailed 9 Years Over Rape

Former Brazilian football star, Robinho has been ordered to serve a nine-year prison sentence in Brazil for his involvement in the gang rape of a 22-year-old woman in 2013.

Despite being found guilty by an Italian court in 2017, Robinho, who has been residing in Brazil, was not extradited due to the country’s policy of not extraditing its nationals.

However, judges in Brasilia ruled that he must serve his sentence in Brazil following a request from Italy. While he remains free pending a potential appeal, the ruling marks a significant development in the long-standing legal case.

Robinho, who has 100 caps for Brazil, has denied the allegations, claiming the encounter was consensual.

The former AC Milan and Manchester City player has faced legal battles since the initial verdict, including an unsuccessful appeal in 2020 and the upholding of his sentence by Italy’s highest court in 2022.
