Sudanese President Declares State Of Emergency, Sacks Governors, Others

Sudan’s president, Omar Al-Bashir has declared a national state of emergency, dismissing the federal government and sacking all state governors.

Bashir, who made the announcement in a nationwide television and radio broadcast today, Tuesday, replaced the sacked governors and government officials with members of the country’s security forces.

Hours after the announcement, President Bashir issued two presidential decrees appointing army and security officers to govern the country’s 18 provinces.

Earlier, Sudan’s Nnal Security and Intelligence Services (NISS) said that Bashir would be stepping down.

The Sudanese strong man has been the focus of anti-government protests in recent weeks. Protesters took to the streets after the announcement in the city of Omdurman, witnesses said, but were met with tear gas by police.

The demonstrations started over cuts to bread and fuel subsidies in December but later morphed into anger at President Bashir’s 30-year rule.

More than 1,000 people are reported to have been detained since the protests began.

Rights groups have said that more than 40 people have been killed in clashes with security forces.

Iranian President Turns Down Resignation Of Foreign Minister

President Hassan Rouhani has turned down the resignation of his foreign minister, Zarif, today, Tuesday, standing by a leading ally in Iran’s moderate faction who has been targeted by hard-liners over a 2015 nuclear deal with the West.
The minister, a US-educated veteran diplomat who helped craft the pact that curbed Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief gave no reason for his decision to quit when he announced it on Instagram yesterday, Monday.
But his move thrust the schism between Iran’s hard-liners and moderates into the open, effectively challenging Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to pick a side.
An ally of Zarif said his resignation was motivated by criticism of the nuclear accord, under increasingly intense fire in Iran since the United States abandoned it last year.
“There were closed-door meetings every week, where top officials were bombarding him with questions about the deal and what will happen next and so on,” a Zarif ally told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “He and his boss (Rouhani) were under a huge amount of pressure.”
Since the United States walked out of the nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions last year, Rouhani has had to explain why Iran has continued to abide by its restrictions while reaping virtually none of the foreseen economic benefits.
Despite announcing his resignation, Zarif had not officially tendered it to Rouhani by Tuesday afternoon and the president had not accepted it.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated that Rouhani had not accepted Zarif’s resignation, rejecting reports in the media.
“All interpretations and analysis around the reasons behind the resignation of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, beyond what he posted on his Instagram account, are not accurate and, as the chief of staff of the president of Iran said today, the resignation has not been accepted,” spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by Fars news.
Lawmakers representing the majority moderate faction sent Rouhani a letter asking him to keep Zarif on, IRNA reported.
Rouhani’s chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi said Rouhani stood by Zarif. The president’s praise was “a clear sign of the satisfaction of the representative of the people of Iran about the wise and effective positions and work of Dr. Zarif,” Vaezi wrote on Instagram.
Lawmaker Ali Motahari, like other politicians from both camps, said Rouhani was unlikely to accept Zarif’s decision since no one else could fill the demanding post.
The schism between hard-liners and moderates over the nuclear deal shows the tension in Iran between the two factions, and between the elected government which runs the country on a day-to-day basis and a clerical establishment with ultimate power.
Rouhani won elections in 2013 and 2017 on reform promises, while Khamenei, in power since 1989, is seen as above factional infighting but sympathetic to hard-liners. While Rouhani chooses ministers, Khamenei traditionally has the last say.
“If he (Khamenei) publicly backs Zarif and Rouhani, this crisis will be over in a good way and it will narrow the gap between different political camps in the country,” said an official close to the hard-line camp.
The political uncertainty comes at a difficult time for Iran’s leaders as the reimposed US sanctions have dashed hopes of an economic breakthrough. Rouhani has warned that the country is facing the worst economic crisis in 40 years.
Hardships have triggered waves of nation-wide protests, with calls for both Rouhani and clerical leaders to step down.
Some unconfirmed Iranian media reports indicated Zarif had resigned because he had not been informed about a visit by Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday.
Zarif was quoted as condemning “factional fighting” in a newspaper interview published on Tuesday, suggesting political tensions may have played a part in his decision. The Fars news agency reported that the interview had taken place last week, before Zarif’s resignation.
A former pro-reform official warned of dire consequences of Zarif’s resignation is accepted.
“If accepted, it will have a domino effect … and others (ministers) and even Rouhani might follow him and this is not something that the country can tolerate when pressured by America and sanctions,” he said.
“Hard-liners will be strengthened and any kind of reform will be buried for at least 10 years.”

Foriegn Election observers at AH Unit at Omisore polling centre in Ile Ife.

The European Union Elections Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Nigeria, have commended Nigerians and the civil society organizations’ role in enhancing the transparency and accountability of the electoral process.

The mission’s Chief Observer, Ms Maria Arena,, who made spoke today, Monday in Abuja, at the presentation of the mission’s preliminary report, said that in spite of the fact that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) operated in a difficult environment, there was significant improvement since 2015.

“The civil society organisations played a vital role in enhancing transparency and accountability of the electoral process.

“Going forward, there is a great need for more transparency and communication during the whole process, with political parties, civil society organisations, the media and most importantly citizens playing significant roles.

“The elections were marked by operational shortcomings resulting in delays, but positively, there were a number of improvements since 2015.”

Ms Arena said that the elections were competitive, while the candidates campaigned freely and voters’ turnout was impressive in spite of the last minute postponement of the elections.

“The last minute postponement of the elections and the delayed to start voting on Feb. 23 placed an unfriendly burden on voters.

Don’t Take Nigeria To Dark Past With Your Childish Antics, Keyamo Warns PDP

Festus Keyamo

The spokesperson of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, has warned the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to take Nigeria into the dark past with its childish antics, even as he called on Nigerians not to be intimidated by the party’s antics.

In a statement today, Monday, reacting to PDP’s rejection of the result of the Presidential election conducted last Saturday, February 23 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Keyamo alleged that the aim of the PDP is to declare false results in the social media ”in favour of its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar as the winner”.

”However, we urge our international friends, observers and patriotic Nigerians not to be deceived. Very early in the build-up to the elections, the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate embarked on a cynical plan to discredit INEC as a backup plan in the likely event of them losing the election.

”You would recall, in this respect, unsubstantiated and wild claims made by the PDP Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his cohorts that were all designed to put a question mark around INEC and damage the faith of the electorate in the democratic process.”

He congratulated the INEC domestic and foreign observers for the conduct of a peaceful free and fair election, and advised the missions not to be deceived by the PDP ”as their motive is to discredit the work of the electoral commission.

”Overall and from reports received in the Situation Room of the Election Planning and Monitoring Directorate of the All Progressives Congress from across our country, at this point it is safe to conclude that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has done a good job despite the challenges and the delays experienced in some cases.”

He warned the opposition party not to play on the sensibilities of Nigerians, saying: ”this is an assault on our democracy; it is an affront to millions of Nigerians who trooped out to exercise their civic duty by voting in the elections. The PDP is, in essence, and most, unfortunately, saying that if they don’t win fairly then, they are willing to tear down the walls to get their way by hook or by crook.

”In spite of this unjustifiable and provocative stance, we are confident that the results by INEC are free and fair. Our elections have progressed over the years, and we ask that the PDP does not derail us to the dark past with its childish antics.”

The PDP earlier today, Monday said that it would not accept the outcome of the elections alleging that it did not reflect how Nigerians voted.

It Doesn’t Make Sense To Be Antagonistic To Buhari, Ebony Governor Tells Igbos

Gov. Umahi of Ebonyi state

Ebonyi State Governor and chairman of Southeast Governors’Forum, David Umahi has said that it does not make any political sense to be antagonistic to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Governor Umahi, who spoke to news men today, Monday in Abakaliki, said: “the fact is that the president remains the boss of all governors and any reasonable governor must respect the president, party differences apart.

“You gain nothing by castigating him and such castigation does not stop him from being the president.

“You should rather make him your friend and see how you can get something for your people. “The bible tells us that when the ways of a man is pleasing unto God, it keeps his enemies to be at peace with him.”

The governor said that those who lived for themselves end up heating the system as they collect their salaries at the end of the month, feed freely among others.

“I am in a hurry to change the story, narratives of Ebonyi people; so whatever vehicle of peace that I need to join to achieve this, I will join.

“Our people are good in social media but will never go to get their voter cards and will be announcing results.”
