Mimiko’s Audacious Declaration For 2019 Presidency, By Sufuyan Ojeifo/Louis Achi

Olusegun Mimiko

Up-close, the quiet vibration of energy he emits is somewhat reminiscent of that from an active volcano. In a sense, he is one. But this dimension could only fairly be applied to his intensity of focus and precision of mission execution. About 30 years after swapping his stethoscope for the political podium, he has certainly and clearly proved that both medicine and politics fundamentally address human development.

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, former and first two-term governor of Ondo State, fondly called the Iroko, also has the distinction of being the first Labour Party (LP) governor in Nigeria. On September 13, 2018, watched carefully by both friends and foes, this sedate scientist made another significant move in his already compelling political odyssey. At the Abuja National Secretariat of the Labour Party (LP), he formally declared his intention to run for the office of president in the 2019 election, on that platform.

In a rather quirky 91-political party field overflowing with political centurions, Young Turks, proxies, pretenders and quite a number of genuine visionaries, Mimiko looms large as a personality who has demonstrated that governance is a field that requires leadership of a certain stature. He enters the fray many Nigerians see as the last frontier not as a rookie but one steeped in the philosophy and scientific appreciation of leadership.

Not one given to beating about the bush, he captures the ‘WHY’ of his entering the presidential fray with words that speak to Nigeria’s dilemma and grave existential challenges. Mimiko said, in his declaratory proclamation of September 13: “There comes a moment in the life of a nation when every patriot must stand up to be counted! At such a moment, no person worthy of a place in history can afford to remain ensconced in their comfort zone. When the totality of our being and the very essence of our humanity are in violation, patriots must advance to recapture the present; and commit to re-defining the future.

“For our country, Nigeria, the moment is now! The times are marked by rapid tumbling of our core values. These are times in our country when a decision has become imperative for those we have for too long pretentiously told, ‘the future belongs to you,’ but for whom we have created only the basis for disillusionment in the present, and hopelessness in the future. They are times of growing frustration for the old; and bleakness of life for all.”

It is beyond any debate that the challenge for all societies is to create a system of governance that promotes, supports and sustains human development. This is simply because governance is crucial in the pace and direction of human progression. It involves a web of networks – including public and private sectors, institutions, organisations and individual actors – that can influence the development journey.

Governance can also be seen as the exercise of economic, political and administrative authority to manage a state’s affairs at all levels. It comprises the mechanisms, processes and institutions, through which citizens and groups articulate their interests, exercise their legal rights, meet their obligations and mediate their differences. Not surprisingly, these were at the core of Mimiko’s eight-year transformative administration in Ondo State.

It is worth recalling that during Mimiko’s first three years in office, his reforms in health, education, and urban renewal won him national and international recognition. In 2012, his Abiye (Safe Motherhood) Programme was recognized by the World Bank, and his free education programmes were commended by the UNICEF. Mimiko, in 2012, became the second Nigerian to win the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award. After winning re-election by defeating the PDP candidate, Olusola Oke, and the APC candidate, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Mimiko was sworn in for a second term in 2013.

Clearly, deficits in the critical arena of discipline, accountable and transparent governance birth impediments to genuine development and create human stagnation. Given his demonstrated courage, conceptual and practical grasp of democratic governance, unencumbered by the baggage of ethno-religious and parochial proclivity, Mimiko is certainly a leader with the stature Nigeria needs at this critical political juncture.

He fetchingly reinforces this image with his message to Nigerians, at his declaration in Abuja: “The truth, however, is that bad as these times are, they will not pass away, if we choose to remain on this same old path. The wanton killings currently enveloping the Middle Belt, and many other parts of the country, can indeed become the lot of the entire country. The excruciating economic pains of today can indeed become a mere introduction to what lies in the bosom of time for us all.

“The unprecedented level of division, and distrust at individual and communal levels, with which we are faced today, can indeed spin out of control, and consume this dear country of ours. As a country, we are sitting right now on the edge of a cliff. Below is a massive inferno. Just a little push in the wrong direction will see us fall over the cliff into utter damnation! Our present circumstances as individuals, communities, and country, have now made one thing clear. Ability to envision great ideas, and demonstrable track record, rather than place and circumstances of birth, must be the most compelling basis for investing candidates with power.”

Flowing from his grasp of history and understanding of leadership, he further observes that, “This is the time for all Nigerians who love this country to wake up, to get up, to take our future into our hands, and do the needful, to eradicate the scandals that haunt our daily existence. It is high time we eradicated the scandal of seeing or reading about fellow Nigerians having to take their own lives because of total loss of hope on how to make ends meet, and about what the future holds in stock for them.

“It is time to do away with the national shame of being called the extreme poverty capital of the world; and being rated the 125th least competitive economy in the world out of the 137 countries surveyed for 2017/2018, by the World Economic Forum. We have had enough of our youths perish in the Mediterranean, in search of better lives in other lands, some of them not as endowed as our own country. Nigeria has for so long been a graveyard of dreams. It is high time we made of it an incubation hub for great ideas! That time is NOW! It is why I am running for president.”

Clearly recognizing the challenges ahead in confronting the so-called ‘majority parties,’ Mimiko called on Nigerians he referred to as “independents”  who may already be disillusioned with the way politics is played in the country to wake up and take their destiny their hands. His words: “If you belong in any of these categories, I call you the Independents in our emerging democratic system, and call on you to join hands with me. I come to you with humility, but confidence in God, and the requisite institutional experience, discipline of mind, clarity of thought, broadness of scope, and cosmopolitan outlook, needed for effectiveness as president of Nigeria.”

Because he had upset impossible odds before on the Labour Party platform, he correctly told the “independents” that LP was the platform to beat: “Without an iota of doubt, the Labour Party is the most compelling platform for unleashing the creativity and vitality of our people, and engendering individual prosperity, security, and national greatness.”

It was the former French president, Giscard D’Estaing’s who counseled statesmen and world leaders that, “There can be no response to history without effort.” D’Estaing’s sagacious counsel was clearly inspired by the environment of the human crisis that defined his era. He was born during the First World War and fought in the second bloody, global conflagration.

Today, Nigeria’s political leadership has clearly been incapable or unwilling to make the necessary effort to respond to the challenges encapsulated in its peculiar history. This scenario pushes the imperative for a change of guards and Mimiko clearly fits the bill.

Shiite Members Allegedly Attack Police With Catapults, 4 Arrested

Police in Kaduna has confirmed the arrest of four members of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly called Shiites, after members of the sect attacked the officers with catapults.

Confirming the incidence today, Thursday, the State police command’s spokesman, DSP Yakubu Sabo said that the incidence happened during a procession at Muchiya, Sabongari, Zaria, Kaduna State.

“I can authoritatively confirm to you that we have arrested four members of Shiite group at Muchiya, Sabongari, Zaria, who attacked the police during an illegal procession.

“They blocked the road preventing people from carrying out their daily activities. In an attempt to open the road, they vehemently responded using catapults to attack our people from all angles. “They used catapult with iron rod, shooting at the police, as a result of these attacks, one of our vehicles was smashed.”

The spokesman said that the arrested persons have been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further interrogation.

“We swore to protect the lives and property of Nigerians, this is our legitimate duty and we will continue to do so.

“In line with this, we carried a ‘show of force’ across the state to forestall breach of peace.”

Nobody Can Retire Me from Politics, Speaker Dogara Boasts

Yakubu Dogara

“Anybody who thinks he will retire me from politics, I am waiting for him in the constituency in case they don’t know of Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa-Balewa Federal Constituency. Let them come. And I will reserve other comments until I am asked to speak again.”

These were the words of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, when he submitted his nomination form for his return to the House at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which indicated his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dogara said: “for those who say they would retire me from politics, (my defection is) to show them boldly that this is where I am now.”

He recalled that he was a founding member of the PDP and that he was part of the people that helped put together the first party constitution.

“But on account of certain developments, I had to leave the party for another party in my journey to nationhood, then believing that we were teaming together with spirited people to build a new Nigeria.”

“But permit me to say that in the APC when we moved in, obviously they are not all devils. There are wonderful people in APC but there are equally some people who have a ravenously wayward sense of personal entitlement, and this really are the problems with the APC.

“When it serves their interests, they said the party is supreme. When it doesn’t serve their interests, they castigate the party including the leadership of the party. These are people who are the lords of the family. They do what they wish while others are required to do what they must. And in such environment, I am disabled. We have a lot of bouncers in the party.

“I was in a situation where I had a very clear conscience even though a lot of people were happy with me, but I can tell you I would rather be hated for who I am than be loved for who I am not.”

Dogara said that he had decided to come back to his original root even as he recalled that when he and others defected to APC, there was never an occasion when they were not reminded that they did not belong.

“When there are discussions, you will hear reference to the fact that those who joined us from the PDP are our problems. So, that discussion will end from today since we have left. So, I have decided to join my brothers, members of this great party the PDP – so that we can chart a new frontier in our state of Bauchi and for our dear nation Nigeria.”

2019’ll Determine Whether Obasanjo Is In Charge Of Nigeria – Ex Minister Tony

Former Nigeria’s information minister, Prince Tony Momoh has said that the 2019 general elections will determine the position of the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo in the Nigeria political landscape..

According to him, “we will soon know whether Obasanjo is in charge of Nigeria or he is just an actor who has been lucky following where the wind blows.”

Prince Momoh, who spoke to news men today, Thursday, said: “Obasanjo is now supporting ADC. Let us see how ADC will go far in the election because that will be the decider for Obasanjo. Because of Obasanjo’s influence, ADC should be able to take over from APC and PDP and become the ruling party in Nigeria.”

The former minister, who is one of the national leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said that contrary to the position Obasanjo took regarding President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians, especially those in the North will not listen to him if he asks them to vote for any candidate other than Buhari during the election.

“When Obasanjo was president during the 2003 presidential election, we got 12 million votes. Obasanjo wanted results declared for Rabiu Kwankwaso in 2003, but Buhari supported Shekarau. Up till 3am, there was fight. The Commissioner of Police said ‘Look, we cannot declare this result because they will burn this house’. They have to declare result for the winner, Shekarau”.

“As President, the whole country was Obasanjo’s constituency, he won but he couldn’t win his own ward in the South-West”.

“So, Obasanjo is a credible fighter but he cannot stop Buhari. He himself knows that clearly. The only person who can stop Buhari is the person who has the votes. Which votes will Obasanjo deliver against Buhari in the North or South-West? Does he have the votes even in his own Egbaland to move against Buhari?”

Presidency Describes Senator Saraki’s Speeches Since Defecting To PDP As Crude

Shehu Garba

The Presidency has described as crude, speeches from the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki after joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with the sole ambition of running as the president of Nigeria.

In a statement today, Thursday, the presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, said that despite “the condemnable and extremely derogatory speeches by the PDP aspirant, we urge all Buhari supporters to display restraint in language and conduct and to always put across their points of view in a decent language.”

He recalled that throughout his political career, Senator Saraki has shown that he is a very dangerous person who can go any length to promote his personal interests.

“The language of his campaign is such that cannot be used against a domestic help.

Is he just knowing that the President lacked vision?

“This is someone that the Senator had worked with very closely for more than three years. Amazingly, he never said all that he is now saying against him.

“Rather, his word for and on the President were always respectful and reassuring. That’s the man he called “My Father,” about him “there is no cause for alarm…a President who is healthy, witty and himself.” What then changed, all of a sudden?

“Is he saying these blatantly false and crude things against the President because he is gunning for the same office? Could it be that he is targeting President Buhari because the party he just joined does not have any real issues to highlight?

“Be that as it may, our appeal to our supporters is to ignore Saraki and any such politicians bent on lowering the quality of political discourse. Let them drown in their own waters.”

“Of course, when by the grace of God our aspirant becomes the candidate of the PDP, membership into this council will be expanded and more people will be drawn into the council.”

In his remarks, Atiku noted that the struggle for national renewal is usually a difficult one, but it is one that patriots must engaged in if they hope to improve the lives of their compatriots.

“Assembled here today (Thursday) is a diverse group of Nigerians, including experienced political leaders representing all regions and segments of our country. You are all here because you want a better deal for Nigeria and Nigerians. You are here because you are committed to fighting for a better Nigeria, a Nigeria that works.

“Nigerians are yearning for jobs, for opportunities, for unity and security. We must work with them to deliver these. We must also restore truth in politics, justice and fairness in governance, and a genuine federal system that helps us address local priorities and run a more effective and efficient government”, he said.

Responding on behalf of other members of the council, Chief Iwuanyanwu said that they  owe the Atiku a huge sense of gratitude for finding them worthy for this national assignment.

“I have been in politics for nearly fifty years, and in all those years I have never seen our people this poor and I am sad when I see all of these things. My worry and my concern is ‘how do we reverse this situation?’

“The Waziri (Atiku) is somebody I know very well. He has enormous strength and he has what it takes to bring PDP back to power and make life more abundant for our people.

“Therefore, I urge us all as members of this council to see our nomination as a call to national service to rescue our people from the claws of poverty and bad governance.”
