A leading presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar condemns the violent incident perpetrated by those he called rouble makers at the headquarters of the PDP, at Wadata House, Abuja today, Thursday. In a statement in Abuja, the presidential aspirant said that it is uncalled for and undemocratic for any group of individuals to turn an otherwise happy political event into a fracas that threatens the lives and well-being of party supporters who were at the event by choice to support their candidate and party. Atiku advised supporters of all political hues to show maturity and allow the democratic process to proceed unhindered in the interest of the parties and aspirants as well as the nation. He called on his supporters to show restraint even in the face of provocation even as praised the Police and other security personnel for containing the situation and protecting innocent and law abiding supporters at the venue. He advised that Nigerians should always allow peace to reign in order for our leadership selection process to be reliable and credible. The former Vice President is optimistic that with the neutral and effective conduct by the Police, there is hope that Nigeria would get the 2019 elections right to the satisfaction of all Nigerians.
The senatorial ambition of Bianca, wife of late Biafra warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu- Ojukwu, faced a major setback as some members of the Ojukwu family vowed not to support her even if she emerged the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). In an interactive session with newsmen, Dr. Ike Ojukwu, who is one of the directors of Ojukwu Transport Company Limited, OTL, said it was wrong to allow a woman from Ngwo in Enugu State to represent Anambra South Senatorial District. “Is she from Nnewi? She is from Ngwo in Enugu State. I would prefer someone who is a son of the soil, and because I come from Nnewi, I would like a Nnewi indigene to represent us.” On his part, Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Jnr said: “She is apparently coming out on the platform of APGA and that is APGA’s business. They can decide on whoever they want to bring out. That should not be my business but I find it curious that they want somebody from Enugu State to represent us in Anambra South. “This is a young woman, who was supposedly married to my late father. A young woman who could remarry tomorrow maybe from Abia State or later from Sokoto State. And they want her to represent us. I wonder if there are no other people in Anambra South, who can represent us. “Has anybody asked Odimegwu household whether we believe in her to represent us? This is a woman we don’t interact with. She doesn’t talk to us. She can’t have access to our property She can’t cross our gate in the village. She doesn’t associate with the members of the family. “There are certain questions that should have been asked before moving in that particular direction. Like I said, APGA is free to field whoever they want to field. I know that APC is trying to field a very credible candidate and when we get to the field of justice we will see what happens.” Also speaking, a legal practitioner Chief Debe Odimegwu Ojukwu, said: “As a lawyer, I would say no. why I said no is that there are so many marriages, even when you look at Nollywood, there are many marriages everyday but that does not make it legal. “Why I am arguing this is because there was a woman my father married in a court, and that marriage was never nullified, and my training as a lawyer tells me that when there is a subsisting marriage, subsequent marriage or attempt at marriage becomes null and void.”

He recalled that in 2012 alone, there were over 20 recorded cases, adding that the fact that this has reduced was as a result of the efforts of the present Administration to tame the tide. Professor Matawal appreciated the confidence reposed in the Committee members and assured that the Panel will give the assignment the seriousness it deserves and perform its work with decorum, sincerity and attention to details. He said the committee will also work with a vision for the future to ensure that occurrences of this nature which were very much avoidable would be addressed by its report. The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has expressed worry over the growing number of presidential aspirants in the build up to the 2019 elections. Chairman of the Board, Senator Walid Jibrin told newsmen today, Thursday that the challenge facing the party now is how to manage the situation in a way that it will not run into crisis after one of the aspirants emerges as the party’s presidential flag bearer. “The BoT deliberated on the current situation in the party. We also discussed about the number of our presidential aspirants. “We are recommending that we have to manage the situation very well, so that it does not lead to crisis. The presidential aspirants are 13. We are trying our best to ensure that the number is reduced. “But we are not forcing anybody. More consultations are ongoing among the elders. We are going to bring out a committee that will be best for Nigerians. ” We are forming a committee to meet with the aspirants. After that, we will decide on what to do. We have decided to firm a special committee to advise the National Working Committee. “If you are a member of BoT, you remain as a member of BoT and conscience of the party. They should not move about with any aspirant. ” If we are really conscience of the party, we should not move about with aspirants. That was what happened during the last national convention when we elected the national chairman. “Some of us went and pitch camp with aspirants, taking them all over the place. This time, we will not allow that to happen. “Anyone of us who move about with any aspirant should resign from the BoT. We are the one that will settle the complaint. “But if we are involved it will not be fair. So we have told the members not to campaign with the aspirants; we are also the delegates.” The party’s presidential aspirants as at today are a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; a former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso; Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal; Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo and a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa. Also in the race are a former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki (SAN); a former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi; a former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau; a former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang and Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, amongst others.
Ex Vice President Atiku Abubakar was embarrassed today, Thursday by supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari who thronged the venue where he submitted his expression-of-interest and nomination forms at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chanting ‘sai baba’. ‘. The chants led to riots, as Atkiu’s supporters picked offence, leading to a clash that the Police resolved by firing gunshots into the air. “It is true that there was crowd trouble but it worsened when some unknown men emerged from nowhere, brandishing machetes and shouting Sai Baba,” a prominent PDP member who witnessed the occurrence told SaharaReporters. “It was totally expected; it caused a riot. The only way the Police could have quelled it was to fire gunshots into the air.” Atiku subsequently went on Twitter to express his happiness with the conclusion of formalities of his interest in the presidential race, writing: “I have just submitted my nomination form to the @OfficialPDPNig to officially declare my intention to seek the nomination of the party to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 2019 elections.” Should Atiku clinch the PDP ticket, he will go against APC’s Buhari at the February 2019 presidential election.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim has approved the dismissal from the service of the Nigeria Police Force, three Inspectors who were involved in the unauthorized, illegal and unprofessional misconduct in the search of the residence of the South South elder, Chief Edwin Clark in Asokoro, Abuja on September 4. They are Inspectors Godwin Musa, Sada Abubakar and Yabo Paul. The fourth one, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), David Dominic, has been interdicted, queried and being investigated for what the police described as discreditable conduct, negligence of duty and an act unbecoming of a Police officer. In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood said that the action of the ASP constitute serious misconduct and that if it is not checked, can be inimical to the image of the Nigeria Police Force and violation of fundamental human rights of Chief Clark, as provided for in the 1999 Nigeria Constitution as amended. “The gravity of the offences against the officer is serious in nature and dismissal from service is imminent. ” Consequently, the Inspector General of Police approved that AP. No 158460 ASP David Dominic, be on interdiction from Service pending the determination of his case by the Police Service Commission. “The IGP also approved and upheld the dismissal from service of (i) AP/No. 18858 Inspr Godwin Musa (ii) AP/No. 225812 Inspr Sada Abubakar and (iii) AP/No. 225828 Inspr Yabo Paul, after the trio were tried under Oath in Orderly Room Trial for Discreditable Conduct, Illegal duty, Disobedience to Lawful Order and other misconduct contrary to the Rule of Law. “The suspect (Informant) Ismail Yakubu from Waru Village, Apo District, Abuja, has been charged to Upper Area Court Mpape, Abuja for giving false information and telling falsehood that misled Police action.”
The mode of primary election to select candidates for the 2019 general poll is currently, and largely unwarrantedly, threatening internal peace and cohesion in the All Progressives Congress, APC. Rising from its leadership meeting last week in Abuja, the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led National Executive Committee, NEC, announced that the mode of choosing the party’s candidates, top of them all, the presidential candidate, would be through the direct primary election. The decision was not in any way ambiguous. President Muhammadu Buhari did not kick against it. He is very much at home with the mode because of its all-inclusive nature. All registered members of the party would have the opportunity of participating in the process of determining who their presidential standard bearer would be. This essentially explicates the archetypical democratic mode. It is a way of making the party members, both the subjects and objects of the entire political and democratic process by putting the power to determine the spirit that drives the structures of the party and government in their hands. The reasoning behind the APC leadership’s gambit and the voice that gave expression to it resonated well with the common mantra of people power: the populist driving force to decide the fates of leaders who are either seeking elective positions or jostling for re-election. Whether it is viewed from the construction of the Latin phrase-“Vox Populi, Vox Dei” (meaning the voice of the people is the voice of God) or from the conception of Abraham Lincoln’s definition of democracy as “the government of the people, by the people and for the people”, the centrality of the people is writ large; which, overall, diminishes or whittles down whatever arguments by state governors of the party who are proponents of the indirect mode of primary election. To be sure, indirect mode is the use of delegates whose numbers are quite small, manageable even if easily programmable, manipulable and pigeonholeable for the purpose of achieving predetermined electoral ends. It is, therefore, quite understandable why the governors are at home with the indirect mode of primary election. To be fair to them, their preference is not illegitimate because the party constitution provides for it as an alternative to the direct primary election. However, in opting for the indirect primary election after the NEC of the party had adopted the direct primary election, the governors are compelled by the party constitution to observe strictly some procedures that are largely stringent. Any state chapter of the party that wants to adopt the indirect mode of primary election would have to write to the National Working Committee (NWC) conveying the unanimous resolution of the state executive committee (SEC) in that regard. The membership of SEC is apparently huge. It comprises, among others, state working committee of the party; members of the state house of assembly, both serving and former; members of national assembly both serving and former from the state; local government chairmen, secretaries, councilors including former occupants of those offices; former governors and deputy governors. To get and validate the unanimity of the SEC is tantamount to passing through the eye of a needle. The stringency of the procedure quite easily exposes the ruse that has taken place in some APC-controlled states where a few office holders gathered in some places to announce the adoption of the indirect primary election mode. If the so-called adoption of the indirect mode by the various states which do not want the direct mode is scrutinized by the national leadership of the party in Abuja in line with the strict provisions of the party constitution, will the process be deemed to have undergone the due diligence constitutionally prescribed and imposed? State chairmen of the party who are working in cahoots with their governors have cited some limitations such as security, unavailability of up-to-date registers of card-carrying and fee-paying party members and other peculiarities. While the security reason adduced is dubious, the issue of register is also quite easily surmountable in the age in which technology can be deployed to mediate voidness, discrepancies and mitigate other contending problems. Besides the presidential primary election will not hold in the moon. I watched governor of Plateau state, Mr. Simon Lalong, last week, brief journalists at the end of the meeting where the decision on the mode of primary election was taken. He was eloquent enough to announce the manner by which the fate of the president would be decided at the presidential election primary; but, he was, however, somewhat incoherent when he announced that a different mode of selection, to wit: indirect primary election would be adopted for all other offices including governorship, federal and state legislative seats. From all indications subsequent to that briefing, one can safely surmise that state governors on the party platform are obviously the ones insisting on the use of indirect primary election for their nomination and the reason is very clear. Many of them are detached from their party members who would not be restrained to express their displeasure by voting against them. In such situations, there could be some embarrassing outcomes of the primary elections nationwide. In fact, it is clear that many of the state governors have not performed and cannot, therefore, be surefooted in their quest for return tickets. The fear of direct primary election was one of the veritable bugaboos that caused Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state to exit the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. That the governors have developed cold feet and are vehemently opposing the direct primary election speak volumes about their stewardships in the last three years or thereabout and the level of their fidelity to the mandate invested in them by the people. Besides, the governors’ seeming desperation confirms the claim that has all this while been made by some leaders of the APC, including Comrade Oshiomhole, to the effect that many of the governors and legislators won their elections on the crest of the countrywide approbation of Buhari’s presidential candidature of the APC in 2015. Indeed, Buhari’s popularity had rubbed off positively on the party platform such that a vast majority of APC candidates in the northern part of the country benefitted from the bandwagon effects of the Buhari phenomenon. Put succinctly, without attachment to the Buhari persona, many of the current elective office holders in the northern region could not have won their elections. This explains the reason the governors, acting in concert with the state executive committee of the party in their respective states, are opposing the use of direct primary election for selection of candidates for elective positions in the state. For Buhari, the presidential primary using the direct mode represents his mock presidential election and that is beautiful. The votes he polls nationwide from the primary could be used to measure how well-poised he is for the February 16, 2019 presidential election. Juxtaposed with his 15 million plus votes in 2015, the APC and Buhari’s strategists would be able to guesstimate the number of votes that the president would be able to poll in the forthcoming presidential election. It is believed that Buhari’s rabid multi-million supporters are waiting to revalidate his presidential mandate. If the governors succeed to sidestep the direct primary election mode, through their chicanery and timid brinksmanship, they would have failed to prove their individual electoral mettle and merit; otherwise, they would have the opportunity to shatter the myth that many of them could not have won election in 2015 without being tied to the “apron string” of President Buhari candidature and countrywide popularity. Subjecting themselves to the direct mode will purify, beautify and reinforce their candidatures. Ojeifo, an Abuja-based journalist, writes via ojwonderngr@yahoo.com
The Chief Coach of the Super Eagles, Salisu Yusuf has been handed a one-year ban after a video of him surfaced receiving $1,000 bribe to allegedly influence the selection of players’ list. The Ethics and Fair Play Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) investigated Salisu, after he was filmed by a Ghanian investigative reporter, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, receiving bribe to file two players, Osas Okoro and Rabiu Ali, in the 2018 CHAN Competition in Morocco. Salisu has also been directed to pay a fine of $5,000 to the Federation within three months, just as he has been asked to stay away from football-related activities, while his ban lasts. However, Salisu was given the chance to make an appeal on his ban to the NFF Appeals Committee. Spokesperson of the federation, Demola Olajire, said the committee concluded that Salisu received the cash gift though it could not ascertain if the gift influenced his decision to select the players because the two players could have made the team on the basis of their talent and performance. The committee’s report read in part: “1) Established from the admission of Coach Salisu Yusuf and also found as a fact from the documentary and video evidence before it, that he accepted the cash gift of $1,000 offered by Tigers Player’s Agency, an undercover reporter, purportedly interested in acting on behalf of Players Osas Okoro and Rabiu Ali, for their inclusion in the list of players for 2018 CHAN Competition in Morocco. “The Committee found as a fact that it was not an error of judgment on the part of Coach Salisu Yusuf but a conscious and deliberate decision to have accepted the cash gift of $1,000 from the decoy player agent/undercover reporter, purportedly interested in acting on behalf of Players Osas Okoro and Rabiu Ali, even though the evidence before the Committee did not establish that his conduct influenced the choice of the two players. “That the two players could have made the team to 2018 CHAN Competition in Morocco on the basis of their talent and performance. “That Coach Salisu Yusuf did not accept the offer of 15% of the anticipated transfer fees of the said players, as there was no follow –up action on the promise. “That the act of the Coach, which was widely published on the British Broadcasting Corporation, has a damaging effect on the reputation and integrity of Nigerian Football, as he ought to have conducted himself more professionally in line with the Code of Conduct signed alongside his Contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, as his conduct in public and in secret should be exemplary, since coaches are role models. “That the FIFA Code of Ethics, NFF Code of Ethics and FIFA Disciplinary Code, did not contemplate negligence or error of judgment as a defence to violation of any of the provisions as contained therein, as punitive measures must be adopted to serve as deterrent to other intending offenders, even though, that he is a first time offender.” The committee maintained that according to Art. 20, 21 (1) and 21 (3) of the NFF Code of Ethics and Art. 10 and 11 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, Salisu is guilty of receiving bribe. The chief coach of the Super Eagles has, however, denied being bribed to field players claiming that the money was not an inducement and fell within guidelines from the world governing body, FIFA, and the NFF about accepting gifts. He had also claimed that the money he collected was $750, not $1,000. Coach Salisu has been left out of the Super Eagles coaching crew for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Seychelles on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

This has indeed boost the confidence of investors hence the increase in flow of Direct Foreign Investment into the country.
“Today, and for the first time in our history, we have a government that is honest and sincere in investing in the poor, the masses and the underprivileged.”
The leader of NCAN said his group can not fold it hands while the foundation laid by the President for another person to destroy.
“We cannot afford to destroy the future of our children. The foundation laid by President Muhammadu Buhari must be reinforced.
