“The PDP in Lagos State believes in Atiku and the large turn out here today is an open testament that Lagos PDP is for Atiku. We are for you here (in Lagos) and we strongly believe in your capacity to lead our great party to victory.”

Speaking in the same vein, the only member of the PDP in Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Dipo Olorunrinu, said that Lagos PDP stands united with Atiku on his presidential bid.

“Lagos PDP is here today (Monday) and we are speaking with one voice that we shall stand with you on this journey. All my leaders have openly endorsed Your Excellency (Atiku) and the matter is already determined”, Olorunrinu said.

He said that should the leaders of the PDP in Lagos State give him an opportunity to fly the flag of the party in the 2019 presidential election, he would win Lagos State for the PDP.

“In 2003 I led the campaign of the PDP in the Southwest that made it possible for our party to win all but one state in the Southwest from the Alliance for Democracy. I promise you that if you give me that opportunity again, I will not only win the presidency for our party, but also all the states in the Southwest including Lagos. I did it before and I can do it again.”

He said  that the ruling All Progressives Congress has made living difficult for a large number of Nigerians and that his main objective if given the opportunity to become president in 2019 is massive jobs creation and redirecting the economy of Nigeria to prosperity.

2019: I’m Not Afraid Of Free, Fair Elections – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear that as a beneficiary of free and fair elections, he is not afraid of a credible process in 2019.

To this effect, the President reaffirmed his commitment to make sure that the 2019 polls, under his watch, will be free, fair and credible.

Speaking at an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community in China, the President pledged that Nigerians eligible to vote in the next general elections will be allowed to freely elect candidates of their choice.

‘‘I have no fear about free and fair elections because that is what brought me to the present position. I know what I went through and very few Nigerians could boast of trying four times (contesting for the presidency).

‘‘Those interested in participating in the elections must get their PVCs, register in their constituency and elect anybody of their choice across ethnicity and religion.

‘‘The Nigerian police, law enforcement agencies and INEC must respect the people to express their wishes,’’ he said.

Citing recent elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi States, the President said the country had made progress relative to elections conducted in the past years.

On security issues, the President reaffirmed that his government has succeeded in curtailing Boko Haram insurgents in the country, adding that the terrorist group no longer controls any part of the country.

He attributed the success to operations of security agencies deployed to counter insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country.

‘‘You will all recall that we contested the last election basically on three issues, which includes security, especially in the North East.

‘‘The Boko Haram used to occupy quite a number of local governments in Borno State but they are not in anyone now. They have resorted to a very dangerous way of terrorism by indoctrinating young people, mostly girls and attacking soft targets, churches, mosques and marketplace.”

On herders and farmers clashes in Nigeria, the President told Nigerians in the Diaspora that while security agencies are doing their best to curtail the clashes, the Nigerian media need to complement the efforts through objective and informed reportage.

The President appealed to the Nigerian media to make an attempt at understanding the cultural and historical implications of some of the misunderstanding between herders and farmers.

In the words of the President: ‘‘To my disappointment there are a number of things which the members of the press in Nigeria do not make enough efforts, in my observation, to study the historical antecedents of issues that are creating national problems for us.’’

According to the President, due to the effects of climate change, a farm that used to belong to 5 people now belong to 50 people, the weather condition, particularly the rainy season is now unpredictable.

The President partly blamed the farmer’s herders’ controversy on the shrinking of the Lake Chad, which has forced many cattle nomads to seek greener pastures for their herds in other parts of the country.

On Nigeria-China relations, the President applauded China’s generosity and contribution to the development of Nigeria, citing the successful completion of the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, built by the Chinese, and ongoing works on Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Abuja, Kano railway routes.

He said Nigeria and China are also negotiating on the Mambilla project.

President Buhari advised Nigerians planning to travel abroad for ‘‘greener pastures’’ to do so legitimately and not to expect too much from their countries of destination.

‘‘You cannot seek greener pastures in a place where you are not respected because of the colour of your skin or your lack of education or other things. Personally, I think you will earn more respect when you remain at home and get a job.”

Acknowledging the material and intellectual support of Nigerians in the Diaspora to the development of Nigeria, the President assured that his administration will remain focused and committed to providing the needed infrastructure and doing the needful for Nigeria’s prosperity.

Earlier in his remarks, the Nigerian Ambassador to China, Baba Ahmed-Jidda thanked the President for his support to the Embassy, which led to the completion of the Ambassador’s residence.

The Ambassador praised Nigerians resident in the various province of China for being law abiding with the exception of few.

On consular matters, the envoy told the President Nigerians still faced difficulties in the process of obtaining Chinese visas – an issue he thinks the President should take up with the Chinese authority.

Also speaking, the President of the China Chapter of Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation, Brian Akiti, while wishing the country successful elections in 2019 pledged the support of the organisation to the present administration’s development agenda.

In a separate event, the President also met with Nigerian students on scholarship in China.

He told the students: “I hope you will make the best use of this opportunity given to you. Nigeria is grateful to China for extending this generosity to us.

‘‘The Chinese are helping Nigeria greatly with building infrastructure, it is very much appreciated. We are pleased with the training they providing for our Nigerian Students.”

President Muhammadu Buhari also met with the executives of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), during which he lauded the construction group for their immense contributions to infrastructure development in Nigeria.

A statement today, Saturday, by the senior special assistant to the President on Media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu said that the bank facility is for the development of NICTIB 11 project which is consistent with the Buhari administration’s commitment to incorporating the development of ICT into national strategic planning under the National Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).
The statement said that President Buhari and his Chinese host will also witness the signing of the MOU on One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR). It may be recalled that in 2013, the Chinese leader proposed the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, with a view to integrating the development strategies of partnering countries.
It said that during the High-Level dialogue between Chinese and African Leaders and Business representatives on the margins of FOCAC, the Nigerian delegation is also expected to sign no fewer than 25 MOUs, including those proposed by the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
Garba Shehu said that earlier on arrival at Capital International Airport, Beijing at about 9:04 am (Nigerian time), President Buhari was received by top Chinese government officials including the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Zhou Pingjian.

The Summit is also expected to adopt the Beijing Declaration and the Action Plan for the development of China-Africa cooperation and fashion out new opportunities to grow Nigeria-China comprehensive strategic partnership from 2019 to 2021.

We Prefer To Ignore President Trump – Nigeria’s Presidency

Amidst the controversy thrown up by the derogatory comment of President Donald Trump of America on his Nigerian counterpart, President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidency has decided to be silent.
Speaking to newsmen today, Saturday in Beijing, China on the sideline of President Buhari’s official visit to the country, his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu said: “you know that as a policy, we said that we are not going to answer the American President.”
He said that however, the fact that the entire world and world leaders are lining up to meet President Muhammadu Buhari, is an indication that there is something about President Buhari: there is something about the Nigeria he now leads, that the world likes.
“I think that Nigerians themselves should better look at this from this positive point of view: it is a major development.
“We had situations in the country in the past where key world leaders didn’t want to meet our own leaders. All of that has changed in the last three years.”
On the gains for Nigeria from the President’s trip, Garba Shehu said that if the momentum from the last trip is msintained, “we hope that going forward, all of the projects that are outstanding, like the Kaduna-Kano rail project, the coastal rail scheme, Mambilla power project, the second phase of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport expansion project, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja/ Kano and all of these projects, will move more steadily.
“We hope that whatever is left, the doted lines will be signed, and we are hoping that we will take back with us, quite a number of schemes that will take Nigeria forward.”

Obasanjo Cannot Be My Political God-Father, Says Sule Lamido

Former Governor of Jigawa State who is currently running as Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido has made it clear that ex president Olusegun Obasanjo cannot be his political God-Father because he was in politics long before Obasanjo.
In an interview with newsmen at the residence of General Jeremiah Useni, during a solidarity visit in Jos, Sule Lamido said: “I was in PDP before former President Olusegun Obasanjo became president. I do not have a godfather, but I respect everyone in our party. We have the same aspiration as PDP members.”
He stressed that the rumour going round that he is being sponsored by former president Obasanjo is unfounded, adding that he is running for the position on his own conviction and determination to correct all the problems created by the the government of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Those Who Think Defeating Buhari In 2019 Is Solution To Nigeria’s Problems Are Naive – Fani Kayode

Former minister of Aviation and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Femi Fani-Kayode, has described those who think that defeating President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election is the solution to the problems bedevilling Nigeria as naive and shortsighted.
He stressed that the problems of Nigeria can only be solved by having a credible and all-encompassing referendum and ensuring that “our so-called federation is properly and thoroughly restructured.”
In a new month message posted on his Facebook wall, and Fani Kayode said: “election fever has gripped our country and many want to be President. Some are serious contenders whilst others are not. Yet the truth is that our problems cannot be solved simply by a Presidential election. It is a good start but it is not a cure-all. We need to do far more than just electing a new President if we want lasting peace, if we want to flourish as a people and if we want to grow as a nation.
“Anyone that believes that removing Buhari alone will solve all our problems is naive and shortsighted. We need to go much further than that.
“The reality is that the problems of Nigeria can only be solved by having a credible and all-encompassing REFERENDUM and ensuring that our so-called federation is properly and thoroughly RESTRUCTURED. Anything short of that means we are simply postponing the evil day.
“Outside of that, whether it is Buhari or anyone else that is at the helm of affairs from next year, the very real challenges and fundamental problems that we are witnessing today as a nation will simply continue. May God grant us wisdom, understanding and foresight.”

Eaglets Arrive Niamey For WAFU Under 17 Tourney

The contingent of Nigeria’s Under 17 boys, Golden Eaglets, has arrived in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic for the WAFU B U17 Tournament which serves as the qualifying competition for the 2019 Africa Under 17 Cup of Nations.

A total of 16 players and members of the technical crew and backroom staff departed Abuja aboard an ASKY airline flight today, Friday morning. The remaining four players as well as Head Coach Manu Garba and Team Administrator Sirajo Hassan, who could not travel on Friday as there were not enough seats available on the flight, will fly from Abuja on Saturday morning.

A new format approved for the competition at the CAF Extra-Ordinary General Assembly which took place in Rabat 13 months ago means countries in each regional block gather in one country within the block to play a qualifying tournament, as against the old format of home-and-away qualifying series.

Only the winning team from each of the blocks (apart from the block of the defending champions that will produce two teams) will qualify for the final tournament, slated for Tanzania next year.

The Eaglets will play their first match of the tournament on Monday, against their Burkina Faso counterparts, before taking on Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday and Benin Republic next week Sunday. Host Niger Republic will trade tackles with Ghana’s Black Starlets and the Baby Hawks of Togo in the 7 –Nation WAFU Zone B.

Five of the 20 players selected for the tournament by Head Coach Manu Garba (who led Nigeria to win the FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates five years ago) are from the U15 National Team, otherwise known as Future Eagles – proof that the NFF/Zenith Bank Future Eagles Championship is indeed a worthwhile venture. The U15 boys won silver medals in the football event at the 3rd African Youth Games held in Algeria last month.
