Soyinka To Obasanjo: End Your Hijacking Propensity

 Wole Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo to end what he called ‘his hijacking propensity and desist from struggling to restore Nigeria to the path of sanity and moderate rectitude.

Professor Soyinka advised Obasanjo to head for a monastery, saying: “I know that deep inside, there is a soakaway pond of personal insecurity struggling to be drained. Beneath every bully, there is a scared product of insecurity and troubled conscience. Now, fight your own demons as best as you can, and feel free to flagellate Buhari (President Muhammadu) with all the weapons in your armoury. I have only one demand: keep away from movements struggling to restore this nation to the path of sanity and even moderate rectitude. End your hijacking propensity.”

Soyinka said these in the latest of his interventions series, Interventions VIII, titled ‘Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?: Gani’s Unfinished Business’ officially released to the public by Bookcraft today, Tuesday. It formed the text of his speech at the 10th memorial lecture of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

He also described the Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, built by Obasanjo as ‘Presidential Laundromat’, alleging that it was constructed with fraud.

“That structure in Abeokuta remains a moral eyesore to those who were in a position to obtain even a glimmering of the proceedings that inflicted such a purulent carbuncle on the landscape of my state, Ogun. However, even the grossest evil can be turned to some good. When we were school pupils, one of our illustrated reading texts was one entitled, ‘This is the house that Jack built.’ Today, and forevermore, generations will point to that thing which I have daubed the Presidential Laundromat and say: This is the house that Fraud built.”

The playwright also asked if someone with Obasanjo’s ‘governance record dare accuse anyone of failing to rise to the challenges of governance.’

Soyinka, who said one of the challenges that had confronted Nigeria since military incursion into politics was electricity, asked Obasanjo to tell Nigerians how he rose to the challenges of power while he was in office for eight years.

“I dare Obasanjo to meet me one-on-one on any podium to present the facts of that stewardship to the Nigerian people… Just how did you, in eight years, rise to the challenges of power generation for a population of a hundred and fifty million people, endowed with enormous energy resources…

“Eight years-repeat, eight years in office, and the elected estate manager of this vast territory could not even provide the modicum level of power to activate even a low-level cottage industrial culture. And such individual has the nerve to sermonise about rising to challenges.”

The essayist and poet said that he had a vested interest in the power industry and could claim to be an insider in that ministry for a while when the late Bola Ige agreed to serve as minister of power in Obasanjo’s cabinet against his (Soyinka’s) personal conviction.

He said that the allegation of corruption against Obasanjo by a former Abia State governor, Chief Orji Kalu, should be formally addressed, adding: “again, we are also duty bound to point out that the author of that damning expose is himself standing trial on charges of corruption. We are aware that this pioneer letter-writer has been summoned by the EFCC to substantiate his claims.”

My Wife, A Food Seller, Bought Car Worth N1 Million, Told Me Our Child Wasn’t Mine – Husband

A 40 year old man, Stanley Anyasi has told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos that his 36 year old wife, Mrs. Florence Anyasi was having sex with another man who he alleged, bought a car worth one million naira for her.

Stanley, who was responding to accusation by his wife that he is a womanizer and wife beater, said: “in January 2017 she came home with a car of N1 million, when I queried her where she got the car from, she claimed she bought it with her money.

“I strongly disagreed with her because she is only selling foodstuffs and can never afford that kind of a car.”

Stanley, who is a businessman, said that his wife packed out of their matrimonial home in 2017 without his knowledge.

“I came home from work and discovered that my wife had packed all her belonging out with the children to start living with her lover.

“I called her severally, she refused to pick but she eventually picked my call last January and informed me that our last baby she delivered in May 2017 was not mine that the child belonged to the man she is presently living with.

“Before she even gave birth and packed out of my house, I always received information from people that they saw my wife in hotel with men but I always ignored them.”

Stanley said that he only beat her once when she stabbed him with bottle on his head even as he urged the court to grant his wife’s wish for the dissolution of marriage saying that he too was no longer interested.

The wife had earlier told the court that apart from numerous cases of his following women around, her husband used to sneak into their maid’s room to sleep with her.

“My husband is a womanizer, he used to leave me in the bed at night and sneak into my maid’s room. I have caught him severally on my maid’s bed sexually assaulting her.

“A neighbour approached me and told me to warn my husband to desist from asking her daughter to have love affairs with him. I once caught him sucking the breasts of my niece, who is a minor and he is also fond of wooing my friends.”

The petitioner told the court that her husband had once tried to poison her when he brought food to her which subsequently caused her serious pain and vomiting.

“I was rushed to the hospital by neighbours, when I was diagnosed, it was detected that the food I just ate had been poisoned,” she said.

The mother of three said that her husband equally turned her into a punching bag, beating her at the slightest provocation, and has been calling her thief and prostitute in public.

The estranged woman stressed that her husband was irresponsible and unable to provide food or pay for the education of their children.

She urged the court to dissolve the 10 year old marriage with Stanley.

Delivering the judgment, the court president, Akin Akinniyi, said that all efforts to reconcile the couple had failed.

“Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.

“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Mrs. Florence Anyasi and Mr. Stanley Anyasi dissolved today.

“Both of you henceforth cease to be husband and wife, each of you should go on his or her separate ways unmolested.

“The court wishes both of you well in your new journey of life.

“The court grants the custody of the children, age 10, 8, 6 respectively to their mother, the petitioner, pending when they attain the age of 18 years to decide who to stay with.

“The respondent must be responsible for the children’s school fees, medical bills and must be paying N15,000 monthly for the children’s feeding which must be channeled through the court,” Akinniyi ruled.

Kebbi School Sacks 5 Teachers For Allegedly Impregnating SS3 Student

Authorities of the Polytechnic Academic Staff Secondary School in Kebbi State have sacked five teachers for allegedly impregnating an SS3 student of the school. Report has it that the school also expelled the impregnated student from the school.

Sources confirmed that the decision to dismiss the five teachers followed the recommendation of a committee set up by the school to investigate the matter.

“The committee submitted report on Monday and recommended that all the five teachers should be dismissed from service immediately. The management has dismissed the teachers and the victim was also expelled from the school.

“When the committee interrogated each of the teachers, they confessed that they have been having sexual relationship with the victim separately, so, they were sacked immediately based on the committee’s recommendations”, the source added.

NAN gathered that the affected teachers had forwarded an appeal against their dismissal to the school’s management board.

The Principal of the school, Malam Muhammed Mahuta was said to be in hospital for weeks before the incident, but his Vice, Malam Oumar Woulandakoye confirmed the development, adding that the affected teachers had filed an appeal against their dismissal.

We’re Aware Of Emergence Of “Purported” Faction, APC’s Spokesman Confirms

Bolaji Abdullahi

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bolaji Abdullahi has confirmed that the party is aware of a group who have purportedly described themselves as a faction of the party

Bolaji, who spoke to news men today, Wednesday in reaction to the breakaway of the members of the former new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) to form reformed APC (rAPC), said that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party will speak again on the next steps for the APC.

“We have report of a group of who have puportedly described themselves as a faction of our party.

“We will be able to give our reaction as soon as we get the full details and have the opportunity to review it.”

New PDP In APC Again, Forms Reform APC, Says APC Breached Agreement

The New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP), which broke away from the then ruling PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 general elections has again formed what it called Reformed APC (rAPC), complaining that the party breeched the agreement they had before the elections.

The group, which today, Wednesday, announced that it is to be called the Reformed All Progressives Congress (rAPC), has Engineer Buba Galadima as Chairman.

Speaking at a press conference today in Abuja, Buba Galadima, who was flanked by Alhaji Abubakar Baraje and other newly appointed executives of rAPC, said that efforts to have the ruling party listen to them fell on deaf ears.

“I stand here before you as the Chairman of the reformed APC to remind you that preparatory to 2015, the nPDP merged with APC to wrestle power, but the content of that agreement were breached.

“The APC in the last three years has performed poorly and refused to sustain its core values.

“The APC government was a monumental disaster even worse than the government it replaced.”

The reformed APC condemned the just concluded national Congress of APC, saying that very soon it will be subjected to what he called protracted legal crisis.

“The APC conducted the worst national Congress so far and it is likely that the outcome of judicial decision on the Congress would further lead to protracted crisis.

“There were crisis in four states. The National Congress Committee Chairman and governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru declared 18 seats unopposed contrary to the Constitution of APC,” it stated.

PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY ALHAJI BUBA GALADIMA, NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, REFORMED – ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (R-APC) AT SHERATON HOTELS ABUJA ON 4TH JULY, 2018

We are here assembled to address you on the state of our party, the APC, the state of the nation and the future of our experiment in constitutional democracy, in Nigeria.

  1. You will recall that in the build up to the 2015 General elections, some political parties and groups came together, and formed a brand new political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC. This merger was based on the strong belief that Nigeria had come of age, but was severely underperforming and unable to meet its potentials for good governance. The Nigerian people entrusted power to the APC based on its promises and potentials.
  2. We are sad to report that after more than three years of governance, our hopes have been betrayed, our expectations completely dashed. The APC has run a rudderless, inept and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the Nigerian people. It has rather imposed dictatorship, impunity, abuse of power, complete abdication of constitutional and statutory responsibilities, infidelity to the rule of law and constitutionalism. It has failed to ensure the security and welfare of our people and elevated nepotism to unacceptable height. The APC has failed to deliver on its key promises to the nation. There is no evidence of any political will to reverse the decline of our party, while leaders who have created these circumstances continue to behave as if Nigerians owe our party votes as a matter of right.
  3. The APC government, has been a monumental disaster, even worse than the government it replaced. The political party that was a vehicle for enthroning the government was rendered powerless by manipulations and complete lack of due process in its operations.
  4. The last straw, was the Congresses and Convention of the APC held recently. The Congresses were intensely disputed as it was conducted with impunity, total disregard for due process, disregard for the party Constitution and naked display of power and practices that have no place in a party we all worked the very hard to put in place.
  5. There are countless cases in courts all over the country challenging the legality of congresses and even the National Convention itself. It is very likely that the judicial decisions on these cases will result in massive chaos, confusion and uncertainties. The fate of a party in this state with a few months to the elections is best left to the imagination, but it is not a fate we believe our millions of members should be abandoned to. There were parallel congresses in 24 States namely: Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara.

These congresses in Wards, Local Government Areas and States all over the federation produced different sets of delegates. We therefore had an unfortunate situation where the party has been seriously factionalised and divided in not just 24 States but the 36 States and Abuja FCT.

  1. The so-called National Convention of the APC was even worse. The National Convention of the party was ridiculed with constitutional infirmities that were so glaring and obvious that no fair minded person can claim that a legitimate and lawful executive emerged from that process. The Chairman of the organising Committee, Jigawa State Governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, declared 18 seats unopposed and uncontested, since only one valid candidate stood at the end of the grossly manipulated nomination exercise for each of the offices. He therefore proceeded to declare them duly elected in flagrant abuse and violence to the Constitution of the APC.

Indeed, Article 20 of the APC Constitution is very clear and explicit. It envisages a situation where if at the close of nomination, only one person is nominated, the Convention must vote “Yes” or “No”, for each candidate before he is declared duly elected. For the avoidance of doubt, let us re-produce the article verbatim:

Article 20 (1) of the APC Constitution states “Unless otherwise provided for: All party posts prescribed or implied by this Constitution shall be filled by democratically conducted elections at the respective National Convention or Congress subject, where possible, to consensus, Provided that where a Candidate has emerged by consensus for an elective position, a vote of “Yes” or “No” by ballot or voice shall be called, to ensure that it was not an imposition which could breed discontent and crisis”.

We all witnessed on live television and at the venue, Eagles Square Abuja, that the Convention Chairman, only put the “Yes” question to all the delegates, using words to the effect: Do you affirm? Do you agree? There was no opportunity whatsoever given to the delegates to say whether they are voting “No” for any candidate as the “No” question was never put to them.

It may well be that it the convention Chairman put the “No” Question, the voice vote for the “Noes”, may have been more. We will never know, since it was never done, contrary to the express provisions of the APC Constitution. It is therefore unquestionably clear that the 18 officers of APC that was “Elected” through this process could not have been duly elected. This constitutional vice infected the offices of:

  1. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole – National Chairman
    2. Mai Mala Buni – National Secretary
    3. Alhaji Ibrahim Masari – National Welfare Secretary
    4. Tunde Bello – National Financial Secretary
    5. Babatunde Ogala – National Legal Adviser
    6. Bankole Oluwajana – National Vice Chairman (South West)
    7. Dr. Zakari Mohammed – Zonal Secretary (North Central)
    8. Abubakar Sadiq – Zonal Secretary (North East)
    9. Hassana Abdullahi – Zonal Woman Leader (North Central)
    10. Nelson Abba – Ex-officio (North-Central)
    11. Isa Azare – Ex-officio (North-East)
    12. Tukur Gusau – Zonal Secretary (North West)
    13. Nasiru Haladu – Ex-officio (North-West)
    14. Rachael Akpabio – Zonal Woman Leader (South South)
    15. Misbahu L. Didi – Representative of the physically challenged
    and others.
  2. Even before these illegal exercises that have alienated millions of members, there has been widespread disenchantment with the manner the party has been run, and the conduct and performance of our governments. The nPDP, a group that has made a major contribution to the emergence of the APC administration has made strenuous efforts to invite attention to inequities, injustice and poor management in our party without any success. The nPDP had shown good faith and commitment to the party, but it has been rewarded with indifference and even contempt. It is obvious that the leadership of the APC has decided to shut out members of the APC, as well as other members who have raised genuine grievances and a desire to improve the responsiveness of the APC to the desire of members for a party founded on democratic principles.
  3. Under the circumstances, patriotic elements and most of the original founders of the APC have found themselves in the opposing side of this charade. Most of the delegates who bought and paid for forms for the congresses and convention and were elected as delegates have come together to take control and give legitimacy to APC to be now known as and called REFORMED-APC (R-APC).

The R-APC as constituted have officers in all the wards, 774 Local Governments, and all the 36 States of the Federation including the FCT.

Man Allegedly Beat Wife To Death For Collecting N200 From Another Man

File photo: This photo is just used to demonstrate the story

A 40 year old Henry Anaele of number 72, Goodness Estate, Satellite Town, Lagos has been remanded in prison for allegedly beating his wife to death, whom he accused of collecting the sum of N200 from another man without his permission.

A police prosecutor, Inspector Cousin Adams had told the Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, that the accused committed the offence on June 15, about 11.45 pm, at No. 72, Goodness Estate, Satellite Town, Lagos.

He said that the accused had found out that someone gave his 35 year old wife, Chinyere, the sum of N200, which did not go down well with him.

“This angered the accused who beat up his wife to death for collecting the money.”

He said that the offence contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes a death sentence for offenders.

The Chief Magistrate, O.O. Olatunji, said that the accused should be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public prosecutions (DPP).

Anaele, 40, whose plea was not taken, had appeared on a charge of murder.

The magistrate adjourned the case to August 6.

Muslim Rights Concern Vows To Stand By Buhari, Says He’s Living Legend

Akintola Ishaq

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic Group, has vowed to stand by President Muhammad Buhari through thick and thin, describing him as a living legend.

The Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said in a statement today, Wednesday, said that the President is well known for his integrity, prudence and simplicity.

“It is not about any close relationship or acquaintance. It is Buhari’s integrity that warms our heart. We marvel at his prudence, his simplicity and his altruism. He is simply a living legend,” read the statement.

“These are the qualities which we cherish in Buhari. His political party does not matter to us. Some Nigerians are not being honest. All of us have been complaining for a long time that the problem with Nigeria is leadership. We accused our leaders of greed, avarice and selfishness. But today we have a leader who loves Nigeria more than himself but then we want to start listening to looters.

“A former military governor, former military head of state and former chairman Petroleum Task Force (PTF) who refused to steal one kobo. We have a man who, in spite of all the chances he had to steal, he has no fleet of cars, no private estates within the country; he has no foreign account, no houses in London, New York or any foreign land.”

Akintola observed that Nigerians have been complaining for long that corrupt leaders always got away with their loot, but these days, there is a President to whom transparency, probity and accountability are uppermost.

“Our support for this administration is driven by patriotism and good governance but not based on religion. If the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo who is a Christian clergy contests election tomorrow we will support him because he shares the same vision with the President,” he said.

“Wole Soyinka and Femi Falana are Christians. We will not hesitate to rally behind them tomorrow if they vie for leadership positions. We would have given all our energy to support Tai Solarin, Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti, Chima Ubani and Ken Saro Wiwa who were all Christians had they contested for the post of president in their lifetime.

“As religious leaders, we are speaking up to guide politicians because things may go wrong if we keep quiet. We will never give up on Nigeria. We will never surrender this country to kleptomaniacs and blood merchants no matter the amount of blackmail.

“This struggle is towards a better future for Nigerian youth, Nigerian children and generations yet unborn. Posterity will judge us.”

He called on Muslims not to shy away from politics, saying that politics determines whether the roads will be good or not. He also lamented that some politicians were earning N29 million monthly while poor workers were not getting N18,000 minimum wage when due.

“The International Monetary Fund revealed in 1999 that one percent of our population enjoys 85 percent of the wealth, leaving the remaining 99 percent of the population to struggle before having access to the remaining 15 percent of Nigeria’s wealth,’ he said.

“That is why facilities cannot go round. That is why we have falling school walls. That is why public hospitals are glorified mortuaries.”
