China’s Parliament Abolishes Term Limit For President

Chinese President Xi Jinping

Chinese Parliament has abolished presidential term limits, allowing President Xi Jinping to rule the country for life. Members of National People’s Congress, today, Sunday, lifted the two five-year term limits for the presidency.

The amendment was sealed with 2,958 in favour, two against and three abstentions despite an unusual bout of online criticism that censors have scrambled to extinguish. It was the first constitutional amendment in 14 years.

The Lawmakers said that the action was taken to allow the leader, who would have had to leave in 2023 to pursue a vision of transforming the nation into an economic and military superpower.

Head of the parliament’s Standing Committee, Zhang Dejiang, said that the amendments “will ensure the constitution improves and develops in step with the times and provide a firm constitutional guarantee for upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.” [myad]

Nigeria’s External Reserves Rise From $42.8 Billion To $46 Billion, CBN Announces

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that the nation’s external reserves currently stand at $46 billion from $42.8 Billion in February this year.

According to figures obtained from the CBN at the weekend, indicate that the reserves grew by about $3.2 billion between February and March 2018. The reserves, at the beginning of 2018 stood at $39.3 billion then rose to $42.8 in February before hitting the new high of $46 billion as at the close of work on Friday, March 9.

Confirming the figures, the CBN Acting Director in the Corporate Communications Department, Isaac Okorafor, attributed the continued accretion to the country’s reserves to the Bank’s effort at vigorously discouraging unnecessary importation and reducing the nation’s import bill; inflow from oil and non-oil exports, as well as the huge inflows through the investors and exporters window of the foreign exchange market, which he said had attracted over $33 billion since April last year, when it was created.

At the close of commodities trading on Friday, March 9, Brent Crude sold at $65.49 a barrel, up by 2.54 per cent.

According to him, the Bank’s interventions in the foreign exchange window had also helped to moderate the pressure on the FOREX reserves by sustaining liquidity in the market and boosting production and trade.

Okorafor said that the CBN policy restricting access to FOREX from Nigeria’s foreign exchange market to importers of some 41 items had made a huge impact on the status of Nigeria’s reserves and boosted the supply of local substitutes for imported goods, created jobs at home and enhanced the incomes of farmers and local manufacturers.

Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the Annual Bankers’ Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) held in Lagos in November 2017, had projected that Nigeria’s external reserves would hit the $40 billion mark in 2018. That conservative projection has since been surpassed. [myad]

I Never Called For Military Coup, I Was Misquoted – Senator Ekweremadu

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has denied calling for military intervention in the country, saying that he was quoted out of context.

Ekweremadu made the denial today, Saturday at the Diepreye Alaimieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Onopa, Yenagoa, when Governor Seriake Dickson hosted him and executive members of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region) to a dinner.

The deputy Senate President, who said that his comments on the floor of the Senate were misconstrued, insisted that he would never make derogatory statements against the Nigerian military, which according to him, remains one of the best fighting forces on the continent.

He said that statements made by lawmakers in the course of their duty should be situated within the proper context before any form of reaction.

Ekweremadu said that parliamentarians had a duty to continue to defend democracy in the country, arguing that the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is the parliament, which should, ordinarily, provide direction for the sustenance of democracy.

He added that his remarks on the floor of the Senate were to caution his colleagues to avoid the mistakes of the past which he said led to the abrupt end of the First Republic. [myad]

The ‘Festival’ Of Killings In Nigeria Must Stop, By Joseph Orjime

Nigerians woke up yet again to another spine-chilling of killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen, in Benue State as usual. This time, the mayhem was visited on the people of Omusu village in Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state.
In a moment, over 24 human beings were hacked to death by armed herdsmen. The only justification for this crime was “theft” of their animals. Governor Samuel Ortom has again scheduled another mass burial. This is notwithstanding the fact that the people of the state are still mourning 73 of their loved ones earlier given a mass burial on the 11th of January this year.
Disturbing as the news may be, to an average Nigerian, it is not breaking news because the level of insecurity in this country has assumed such an alarming dimension that killing no longer makes news. It is the number of people killed, and the subsequent rise in the death toll that sometimes make news.
There is hardly any passing day in Nigeria without killings going on in one part of the country or the other, the highest casualties resulting from suspected armed Fulani herdsmen invading farming communities and killing anyone in sight, and the murderous activities of Boko Haram insurgents.
The marauding Fulani herdsmen, who have been graded as the fourth most vicious terror organization in the world (by Global Terrorism Index), have continued to wreak havoc on innocent Nigerians,  Benue being the worst hit. An average Benue farmer, as it stands, is living at the mercy of these armed herdsmen.
There are nagging posers begging for answers. First, what is the rationale behind the launching of exercise Ayem a kpatuma (Cat Race) in Benue and the neighboring states? Why did  the suspected herdsmen muster the courage to still engage in such wholesale massacre right while there is heavy presence of armed military men in the state, without any arrest whatsoever? Again, is there any political will or sincerity of purpose on the side of the federal government in maintaining security in certain parts of this country? Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has called on the federal government to stop paying lip service to issues of security.
Now that President Muhammad Buhari has finally bowed to pressure, after heavy criticisms, to at least visit the state, he would be confronted with many questions, and the salient issue of the real position of Benue state in the scheme of affairs of his government. The many years of genocide, lack of federal government presence, and the gruesome negligence by the Buhari- led administration has, no doubt, impacted negatively on the sense of belonging of the government and people of the state who voted massively to bring him to power in 2015.
His belated visit to the state is viewed in many quarters as merely political, especially coming at the heels of his rumoured second term bid in office. Where was he when over 500 people in Agatu were massacred in 2016 by the same suspected Fulani herdsmen? Even thereafter, killings have continued unabated in the state without any effort from his administration to stem the tide, prompting the state House of Assembly to enact the open grazing prohibition law in 2017.
It is important to note that security of lives and property is the social contract between the government and the people. If that contract is breached, then the government has failed in its responsibility. But first, there must be political will on the side of government to succeed in this task.
President Buhari had said in Jalingo when he visited Taraba state on Monday, 5th of March, that “the number of people killed in Taraba are more than those killed in Benue and Zamfara combined.” Just as this was being said, 24 people in Okpokwu and 5 others in Guma areas of Benue State were sent to their early graves. One wonders if the number contest, and not the security of these lives, was necessary. Or was that a deliberate effort by the killers to level up with the Taraba casualties? Most disappointing is the fact that such needless statistics is coming from the number one citizen of this country.
How long will this genocide continue? Of what value is the life of an average Nigerian? Benue is renowned for crop production, hence the slogan “food basket of the nation “. But recently, farming has become a nightmare in some parts of the state. Farmers are now scared of being killed by these armed herdsmen who graze their cows indiscriminately on farms and threaten or kill anyone in sight.
Worse still, those saddled with providing security and defences of citizens have allegedly taken sides with the marauding herdsmen. The Inspector – General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris had earlier on insisted that the anti-open grazing law in the state be suspended as the only panacea to the killings. The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali also shared in this sentiment, claiming that the cattle routes and grazing areas gazetted for Fulani herdsmen by the British (colonial) administration have been encroached upon by the farmers in Benue, hence the persistent pogroms. Their biased position has helped to embolden the Fulani herdsmen. But what a country!
These views, howsoever analyzed, tactically align with those of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, who had, at the inception of the law, threatened to mobilize their men to attack and rubbish such steps. Calls by Benue state governor and other well meaning Nigerians for their arrest by the relevant security agencies fell on deaf ears. They made proof their threat on the New Year day in Guma and Logo LGAs of the state, killing 73 people. Yet, on the 13th of January, Alhaji Hussaini Yusuf Bosso, the vice president of the group warned that the nation should   “expect more bloodshed in Benue”. His threats were published in the Sun newspaper same day. Since then, over 90 more people, including some police officers drafted to these troubled areas, have been killed.
The leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore,a Fulani umbrella socio-cultural group, has in many respects, claimed responsibility for the genocide in Benue, alleging that the open grazing prohibition law is not in their favour. If those in authority who choose to defend the killers’ interest, prefer to call them foreigners, then it is only in Nigeria that  ” foreigners ” can pass orders to the citizens not to enact laws for the well being of their people.
The claim for grazing areas and cattle routes has invariably led to the pogroms witnessed in Nigeria for close to a decade now. These killings have had a wide geographical spread, cutting across virtually all the six geopolitical zones in the country, a move many suspect, is a Fulani expansionist agenda. Otherwise, if the opinion of the IGP, the Minister of Defense and the Fulani cattle rearers with respect to encroachment on grazing areas is anything to go by, then the entire country called Nigeria is a cattle route and a grazing reserve.
It is therefore foolhardy and a brazen fallacy for anyone to claim that the killer herdsmen are simply foreigners, with the kind of attention the federal government has given to their trade, including the subtle design to establish cattle colonies for them in every state of the federation .Howbeit, the unpopular decision was roundly rejected by majority of the state governors, apart from Kogi state and others in the core north.

The Benue people know who their killers are. They are the Fulani herdsmen. Their grandstanding and sheer arrogance are testimonies to this fact. What is left is for President Buhari to stop paying lip service to the all-important issue of security, and put a stop to these killings, or leave the peace loving people of Benue with no choice than to take their destiny in their hands and defend themselves.
Enough of this killing!

Diversity Should Be A Cause For Celebration, Queen Elizabeth Speaks On Commonwealth Day

The Queen of England and Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Queen Elizabeth, has said that diversity amongst the 53 member states of the body should be seen as a cause for celebration rather than division.

The Queen said: “we all have reason to give thanks for the numerous ways in which our lives are enriched when we learn from others. Through exchanging ideas, and seeing life from other perspectives, we grow in understanding and work more collaboratively towards a common future.

“There is a very special value in the insights we gain through the Commonwealth connection; shared inheritances help us overcome difference so that diversity is a cause for celebration rather than division.”

The Queen’s message to the 53 Commonwealth member nations will feature in a service, staged at Westminster Abbey tomorrow, Monday, to mark Commonwealth Day. Commonwealth of Nations (formerly the British Commonwealth), is an intergovernmental organization of 53 member states that are mostly former territories of the British Empire.

The Queen’s message went on: “we shall see this in action at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which takes place in the United Kingdom next month, bringing together young people, business and civil society from across the Commonwealth.

“These gatherings are themselves fine examples of how consensus and commitment can help to create a future that is fairer, more secure, more prosperous and sustainable. Having enjoyed the warm hospitality of so many Commonwealth countries over the years, I look forward to the pleasure of welcoming the leaders of our family of 53 nations to my homes in London and Windsor.

“Sport also contributes to building peace and development. The excitement and positive potential of friendly rivalry will be on display next month as we enjoy the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia. Contributing to the success of the Games, alongside athletes and officials, will be thousands of volunteers.

“Voluntary effort, by people working as individuals, in groups or through larger associations, is so often what shapes the Commonwealth and all our communities. By pledging to serve the common good in new ways, we can ensure that the Commonwealth continues to grow in scope and stature, to have an even greater impact on people’s lives, today and for future generations.” [myad]

I’m Sorry, Charly Boy Apologizes To Senator Saraki Over Alleged Mob Attack

Charly Boy

Self-styled Area fada and punk king, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, a.k.a, Charly boy, has apologize to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki over his false statement that Saraki was recently attacked by a mob in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Charly boy had, through some tweets, said that Saraki was attacked merely by seeing a handful of photographs in which Saraki was either dusting up his dirty trousers or showing the people around him some dirty pebbles.

The Area fada had misinterpreted the photos to be those of a mob attack against the person of the Senate President.

Twitter users, including Saraki’s Head of New Media, Olu Onemola, drew Charly boy’s attention to the fact that the photos were those of the Senate President’s 2012 visit to Ogoniland in Rivers State, rather than photos of an attack by some mob in Kwara State. [myad]

Herdsmen/Farmers Clashes Beyond What’s On The Surface, Obasanjo Observes

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked the Buhari-led Federal Government to look beyond the ordinary causes of the lingering clashes between herdsmen and local farmers in parts of the country if permanent solution should be found.

The former Nigerian leader, who spoke today, Saturday when he paid solidarity visit to Benue State to condole with the Governor Samuel Ortom and people of the state over the incessant attacks and killings, remarked: “Mr. Governor, please accept my condolence. This (crisis), to me, goes beyond what is on the surface and we need to find out what is at the bottom of it.

“That is the responsibilities of leaders. They must leave no stone unturned to find what the root cause of this is and put a stop to it.”

Obasanjo, who described the incessant killings as ‘senseless,’ said the Federal Government must take proactive steps or risk the consequences of burying innocent victims like those killed in the New Years’ attacks in Benue State.

He insisted that leaders across the board must work to unravel the mystery behind the killings to arrive at a safe and lasting solution.

“We cannot talk of a free country, a secured country, a country where we will want development to take place, a country where we will want to invite investors and we are suffering this type of senselessness. I do hope that there will be an end to this.” [myad]
