The Presidency has expressed anger over allegation by the Supreme Council for Sharia that President Muhammadu Buhari failed to attend the emergency summit of Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), called by Turkey to discuss the US declaration of Jerusalem as the official Capital of Israel.
Speaking on the BBC Hausa radio news on Friday afternoon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu
said that the allegation was totally misleading and baseless.
Malam Garba said that President Buhari had to go to France to attend the Climate Change Summit because he had earlier given a firm commitment to President Macron. He said that Buhari sent the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu to represent him at the OIC meeting in Turkey.
“The Paris summit on climate change wasn’t a junket. It was also about the problem of the Lake Chad region which affects Nigeria as well as the neighboring countries. About 30 million lives are involved. “Without the drying up of the lake, we would probably not have had the acute poverty that nurtured the environment for Boko Haram terrorism.”
Garba Shehu recalled that countries such Saudi Arabia and Egypt, which sponsored the UN General Assembly Resolution to condemn the US President, Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the official Capital of Israel, didn’t also attend the Turkey meeting for various compelling reasons.
“As a respectable religious organization, an organization that we hold in high esteem, the Supreme Council for Shari’ah could have helped themselves and the nation by checking the facts before the outburst, which sadly, was repeatedly aired by the international radio.
“By the time the President Erdogan summit was called, the Presidential advance team was already in Paris, ready to receive him.
“At that point, the best President Buhari could do was to send a representation. He called President Erdogan and explained the circumstances and the Turkish leader expressed his understanding and appreciation. We are signatory to the final resolutions,” the Presidential Spokesman said.
He explained that at every available opportunity, including his addresses at the UN General Assembly sessions in the past, 2015, 2016 and 2017, President Buhari had always spoken passionately and forcefully about the Palestinian issue and the necessity and urgency of finding a just solution to their case.
Garba Shehu said that it is very uncharitable, under the circumstance, for any religious organization to accuse the President of abandoning Muslims as alleged.
“As can be seen from the UN vote on Jerusalem, the issue of Palestine is for all men of conscience; Muslims, Christians, Jews and even nonbelievers.
“Besides, the President has shown consistency in his support for the Palestinian cause.
“In his address at the General Assembly in 2015, President Buhari said ‘as we engage in these annual debates, we need to remind ourselves of the principles that led to the founding of the United Nations. Among those are peaceful coexistence and self determination of peoples. In this context, Mr. President, the unresolved question of self-determination for the Palestinian people and those of Western Sahara, both nations having been adjusted by the United Nations as qualifying for this inalienable right must now be assured and fulfilled without any further delay or obstacle.’
“‘The international community has come to pin its hopes on resolving the Palestinian issue through the two – states solution which recognises the legitimate right of each state to exist in peace and security. The world has no more excuses or reasons to delay the implementation of the long list of Security Council resolutions on this question. Neither do we have the moral right to deny any people their freedom or condemn them indefinitely to occupation and blockade.”
In his address at the UN in 2016, he said ‘Mr. President…the Palestinian issue, despite years and years of international efforts is no nearer to being resolved. Nigeria in company with member States of the African Union, firmly support the Two-State solution with Palestinian rights to statehood in conformity, with numerous Security Council Resolutions beginning with Resolution 242 of 1967.
“‘Let me seize this opportunity to once again thank all UN and other aid agencies and development partners currently deployed in North East Nigeria. I reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to collective action towards an effective global response to address the root causes of refugee flows worldwide.’ “
In September this year, he took the issue Palestine to the UN General and spoke the minds of Nigerians and many in the world that“ ‘new conflicts should not make us lose focus on ongoing unresolved old conflicts. For example, several UN Security Council Resolutions from 1967 on the Middle East crisis remain unimplemented. Meanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the blockade of Gaza continue.’”
The Presidential Spokesman advised religious organizations to avoid jumping to conclusions and making unfounded allegations without adequate knowledge and facts of the reality surrounding certain decisions and actions of the government.
Garba Shehu expressed the appreciation of the Presidency for the support and prayers for the President from all religious organizations and assured that the President is committed to the promotion of peace and harmony in the country.
The Presidential media aide advised all religious leaders to recognize the sensitivity of some of their utterances on the unity and peaceful coexistence of the country. [myad]

Atiku Asks Christians To Think Of What They Can Give To Nigeria As They Celebrate Christmas

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Former Nigeria Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has asked Christians to spare a thought on what they can give to Nigeria as they celebrate Christmas, beginning from tomorrowSunday night.
“Nabi Isa (Jesus Christ) taught that it is more blessed to give than to receive. So this Christmas, spare a thought for what you can give back to Nigeria.”
In his message to felcitate with Christians in Nigeria, Atiku suggested that they should give patriotism, loyalty and fidelity to the unity of the Nigeria that had given them so much.
Atiku stressed that since Christmas is a time of love, it has become imperative for Christians to emulate the essence of the season and unite for the greater good of Nigeria.
“Let us also remember our fellow citizens, the men and women of our armed forces, many of whom lost their lives this year fighting to protect us from terrorists and other threats to our national security. We ought to also spare a thought for our brothers and sisters who faced and are facing perils in Libya and the Mediterranean Sea.”
Atiku, who is the chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that as we unite in celebration of this season, and in reflection of the months past, “we must never forget, that to get Nigeria working again is the responsibility of each and everyone of us.
“Therefore, let us be intentional in thinking good thoughts and sowing even better actions to make Nigeria greater today and for all times.”[myad]

Buhari Foresees Better Days Ahead For Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari

“I am deeply convinced that better days lie ahead for us as a nation as we make progress on all the major fronts where we have set our energies to surmount the challenges.”
President Muhammadu Buhari, expressed this hope in his special message to Christians in Nigeria, as they begin the celebration of Christmas.
The President noted that the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ is an important opportunity for Christians to show love to one another and encourage unity by spending quality time with friends, families and the less-privileged.
“It is also an occasion to draw inspiration from the exemplary lifestyle and teachings of Jesus Christ, who constantly stood for what is right, true and honest.
“The Holy Book describes Christmas as a festival of peace, joy, healing, hope, and fulfillment. It kindles great expectations in the heart, irrespective of the challenges of the moment.”
Buhari said that as the Christians celebrate this Yuletide season, they should devote some time to pray and appreciate the sacrifices of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces to keep the nation safe and secure.
He said that keeping with the spirit of the season, “our gallant troops serving in the frontlines in the fight against insurgency; those wounded, lying in the hospital, as well as civilians who have suffered the brunt of evil and wicked elements these past years, deserve our fervent goodwill and sustained prayers.
“The personal fortitude of these individuals will continue to inspire us to victory as we turn the tide against the enemy and annihilate those who work against the unity of our nation.
“In this season of hope, let us remember to provide refuge to those who cannot enjoy Christmas at home with their families, or have been driven from their homes by insurgency or violence, particularly the Internally Displaced Persons.
“Lately, we have witnessed an upsurge in the activities of trans-border syndicates who lure our youths to modern slavery through irregular migration. While we have stepped up our efforts to halt this wickedness against the upwardly mobile generation, and have evacuated some of our compatriots stranded abroad, we appeal to them to shun the allure of embarking on such perilous journeys.”  [myad]

8 Million Nigerians Lost Jobs From January 2016 To September 2017 – NBS

nigerian-job-applicantsAn unemployment survey report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that an estimated eight million Nigerians became unemployed between January 2016 and September 30, 2017.

According to the NBS report which was released today, Friday, the number of Nigerians that became unemployed rose under the Buhari regime from 8,036 million in 2015 fourth quarter to 15.998 million in third quarter of 2017.

“The unemployment rate increased from 14.2 per cent in Q4 2016 to 16.2 per cent in Q2 2017 and 18.8 per cent in Q3 2017. The number of people within the labor force who are unemployed or underemployed increased from 13.6 million and 17.7 million respectively in Q2 2017, to 15.9 million and 18.0 million in Q3 2017.

“Total unemployment and underemployment combined increased from 37.2 per cent in the previous quarter to 40 per cent in Q3 2017.

“The labor force population increased from 83.9 million in Q2 2017 to 85.1 million in Q3 2017. The total number of people in full-time employment (at least 40 hours a week) declined from 52.7 million in Q2 2017 to 51.1 million in Q3 2017.”

NBS in the report blames the increasing unemployment and underemployment rates on Nigeria’s fragile economy despite the exit from recession. The report explained that domestic labor market is still fragile and economic growths in the past two quarters in 2017 have not been strong enough to provide employment in Nigeria’s domestic labor market.

“An economic recession is consistent with an increase in unemployment as jobs are lost and new jobs creation is stalled.

“A return to economic growth provides an impetus to employment. However, employment growth may lag, and unemployment rates worsen especially at the end of a recession and for many months after,” the report said.

During the third quarter of 2017, according to the report, 21.2 percent of women within the labour force (aged 15-64 and willing, able, and actively seeking work) were unemployed, compared to 16.5 percent of men within the same period.[myad]

Emir Sanusi Muhammed

Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi ll has regretted that a new crop of journalists in Nigeria have resorted to what he called ‘Yellow Journalism’ which does not speak good of the image of the country to the world.

The Emir, who spoke today, Friday, at the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop for Media Practitioners organized by Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited (KRPC), said that modern journalists have resulted to yellow journalism which is very bad to the development of this country.

The Emir, who was represented by Turakin Kano and the District Head of Dala, Abdullahi Lamido Sanusi, emphasized that journalist must desist from publishing or reporting anything that will paint the country black globally.

“We must desist from Yellow journalism which is now the trend in the country. Most of our reportage today is about portraying the country negatively instead ‎of positively. We are not doing the country any good.

“We are not supposed to publish everything that will paint our nation bad because whatever we publish is respected by the public. We should try not to cause chaos but peace in the country. We are aware that the government is trying to fix some of the crisis in the country and it’s not easy doing that particularly in the Oil and Gas industry which is the backbone of our nation’s economy.

“We should soften things. What is bothering me is how we are showcasing the country badly which you hardly find in other part of the world. We must learn to report positively; that is the kind of journalism we want to see in this country.”

Earlier, the Managing Director KRPC, Adewale Ladenegan, said the role of the media in the development of this country cannot be over emphasized.

“It is in tandem with this that KRPC resolved to ensure that media practitioners have the required knowledge and capacity to effectively report the oil and gas industry.”

KRPC’s Managing Director who was represented by the Executive Director (Services), Abdullahi Idris, said the company has cordial relationship with its host communities saying, in the first half of the year 2017, KRPC produced and delivered to Nigerians 236.48 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

“87 Million Litres of household Kerosene, 197.51 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil‎ and 66.39 million litres of Low Pour Point Fuel Oil(LPFO). The crude Distillation Unit was streamed on 4th December, 2017 and is still in operation. Likewise, the Naptha Hydro Treating Unit which was also re-streamed on the same day.

“The re-streaming of the plant could not have come at a better time considering the recent scarcity of the petroleum products in parts of the country. Within this shot period of operation, KRPC has been able to release 16.1 million litres of PMS which is over 480 trucks and counting) into the market thereby cushioning the effect of the scarcity in especially the northern States and Abuja.”

This year’s theme of the workshop which has 27 journalists in attendance was: “Towards Enlightenment Reportage Of The Oil and Gas Industry.”

UN Insists That All Countries Comply With Its Resolutions On Jerusalem

United Nation General Assembly
United Nation General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly has insisted that all  countries should comply with Security Council resolutions regarding the status of Jerusalem.

The General Assembly’s resolution stressed that the Holy City “is a final status issue to be resolved through negotiations in line with relevant UN resolutions.”

The resolution demanded that “all States comply with Security Council resolutions regarding the Holy City of Jerusalem, and not recognise any actions or measures contrary to those resolutions.”

The General Assembly further affirmed that “any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”

In that regard, the Assembly also called upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem, pursuant to Security Council resolution 478 adopted in 1980.

Reiterating its call for the reversal of the negative trends that endanger the two-State solution, the Assembly urged greater international and regional efforts and support aimed at achieving, without delay, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

Thursday’s action in the Assembly followed a failed attempt by the Security Council on Monday to adopt similar text reflecting regret among the body’s members about “recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem,” with a veto from the U.S., a permanent member of the Council.

Subsequently, Yemen and Turkey, in their respective capacities as Chair of the Arab Group and the Chair of the Summit of the Organiaation of the Islamic Cooperation, requested the President of the General Assembly to “urgently resume’ the 10th emergency special session of the General Assembly in accordance with the so-named ‘Uniting for Peace’ procedure.

This procedure, under Assembly resolution 377 (1950), is a pathway around a Security Council veto.

By it, the Assembly can call an emergency special session to consider a matter “with a view to making appropriate recommendations to members for collective measures.’’

This is if the Security Council fails to act or if there is lack of unanimity among the Council’s permanent members, China, France, Russia, UK, and the U.S.

Meanwhile through a resolution adopted by a recorded vote of 128 in favour to nine against, with 35 abstentions, the 193-member Assembly expressed “deep regret” over recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.

Resolutions in the Assembly are non-binding and do not carry the force of international law as do measures agreed in the Security Council.

U.S. President Donald Trump had on December 6, directed the U.S. Embassy in Israel to be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in recognition of the city as the capital of Jerusalem, triggering protests across the Muslim world and drawing strong condemnation.

It Is Only By Act Of God That Nigeria Survived, President Buhari Tells Supporters

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari

“Some of the things I saw here (when I assumed office as President) were unbelievable. I still shudder and wonder how a country can survive under such abuses. It is only by an act of God that we survived.”
President Muhammadu Buhari, who made this fact known to his  his supporters, inder the canopy of the Governance Support Group when they visited him today, Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said: “we have gone through the worst of the times. We lost elections three times and I learnt a lot along the way.”
President Buhari said that the long-suffering, commitment and sacrifices of all his supporters over the years will be remembered by posterity.
He appealed to them to remain steadfast in pursuing the overall good of the nation even as he expressed his gratitude for all the personal and collective sacrifices that culminated in winning the 2015 elections.
“I can never forget your sacrifices and I am grateful for all. You never gave up when things were bleak, and we needed to survive. I can’t express my gratitude enough.
“In spite of the environment you found yourself, you kept believing and pushing. Some of you were really exposed to risks. My consolation is that you voluntarily threw in your lot with me.
“Some of you exposed yourself so much, and I knew it. I urge you to still stick to your principled ways of doing things and our country will be the better for it,’’ he said.
The President said the administration had ushered in a new era of accountability and responsibility by auditing and correcting the many wrongs of the past that crippled the economy and created an exclusive class, promising to consolidate on the reforms he had initiated for change in the country.”
President Buhari told his supporters that he was not oblivious of the personal risks and investments that brought in the government, citing the appointment of Mr. Boss Mustapha as Secretary to the Government of the Federation as most deserved because of his steadfastness.
According to him, after losing in three elections and pursuing cases up to the Supreme Court, he learnt that ethnicity and religion had no place in Nigerian politics, but personal interests prevailed.
The Chairman of the Governance Support Group, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, commended the President for the bold initiatives in restoring security, tackling corruption, and setting the economy on a more predictable path.
Nwajiuba said the group would continue to support and advise the President on areas that needed more attention, which include engagement with party members and supporters, empowerment of Nigerians and the fight against kidnapping.
