Members Of ‘Fresh PDP’ Are Errand Boys Of APC, PDP House Of Reps Caucus Concludes

PDPThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House Caucus has referred to members of a new splinter group which goes by the name ‘Fresh PDP’ as errand boys of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“They are only serving the errands of the ruling party elements planning to use them for even more mischief early next year.
“The activities of the said men claiming to be starting a fresh PDP deserve urgent investigation and immediate halt by the police and the Department of State Security as we would not want enraged supporters of the PDP to take the laws into their hands in the process of dealing with such miscreants.
“There is need to investigate how far these five leprous fingers are connected to the APC and its past record of widespread deceit and unscrupulous propaganda.”
In a statement today, Thursday, by the House of Reps Deputy Minority Leader, Chukwuka Onyema, the caucus further described Fresh PDP as a mere band of ill-disguised impostors whom the House caucus will never recognize or interact with.
“This band of impostors – pawns being strung along by devious elements in the ruling party – has the audacity to arrogate the name of our party, the PDP, to its misadventure, using a rented space somewhere in Asokoro, Abuja.
“Feigning complete ignorance that the Wadata Plaza national headquarters of the PDP that is recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission is located at Wuse Zone 5 in Abuja, they pasted two copies of our flag on the wall and went to town like a band of jesters.
“The PDP House caucus hereby declares that the five leprous fingers said to constitute the mischievous adventure do not constitute any faction, splinter group or whatever fanciful description they
“Our convention has come and gone in the face of a ruling party that seems so petrified at the thought of facing a reawakened PDP, even as it remains unable to hold a national convention like we did.
“We note too that a government that finds it impossible to implement a mere 25% of the national budget in any given year has now frantically woken up in a rush, doing a two-days’ FEC meeting just to pass contracts worth N377 billion before campaigns begin in earnest.
“The mischievous claim of forming a fresh PDP with the voice of five unknown men shows the hands of APC in its desperation to hold on to power by all means, even after failing to touch lives purposefully in spite of making scores of unrealized promises,” the PDP House caucus said.[myad]

UN Disowns President Trump’s Recognition Of Jerusalem As Israel’s Capital

United Nation General Assembly
United Nation General Assembly

The United Nations general assembly has delivered a stinging rebuke to Donald Trump, voting by a huge majority to reject his unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The vote came after a redoubling of threats by Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, who said that Washington would remember which countries “disrespected” America by voting against it.
Despite the warning, 128 members voted on Thursday in favour of the resolution supporting the longstanding international consensus that the status of Jerusalem – which is claimed as a capital by both Israel and the Palestinians – can only be settled as an agreed final issue in a peace deal. Countries which voted for the resolution included major recipients of US aid such as Egypt, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Although largely symbolic, the vote in emergency session of the world body had been the focus of days of furious diplomacy by both the Trump administration and Israel, including Trump’s threat to cut US funding to countries that did not back the US recognition.
But only nine states – including the United States and Israel –voted against the resolution. The other countries which supported Washington were Togo, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Marshall Islands, Guatemala and Honduras.
Twenty-two of the 28 EU countries voted for the resolution, including the UK and France. Germany – which in the past has abstained on measures relating to Israel – also voted in favour.
Thirty-five countries abstained, including five EU states, and other US allies including Australia, Canada, Colombia and Mexico. Ambassadors from several abstaining countries, including Mexico, used their time on the podium to criticise Trump’s unilateral move.
Another 21 delegations were absent from the vote, suggesting the Trump’s warning over funding cuts and Israel’s lobbying may have had some effect.
While support for the resolution was somewhat less than Palestinian officials had hoped, the meagre tally of just nine votes in support of the US and Israeli position was a serious diplomatic blow for Trump.
Immediately after the vote the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, described the result as a “victory for Palestine.” The Palestinians’ UN envoy, Riyad Mansour, described the result as a “massive setback” for the US.
“They made it about them,” Mansour told AFP.
“They did not make it about Jerusalem, so when you make it about them and to only be able to get nine votes to say ‘no’ to it, I think it was a complete failure for their campaign.”
Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected the UN vote out of hand.
“Israel thanks President Trump for his unequivocal position in favour of Jerusalem and thanks the countries that voted together with Israel, together with the truth,” said a statement from Netanyahu’s office.
General assembly to vote on rejecting US recognition of city as Israeli capital with Trump warning: ‘We’re not going to be taken advantage of any longer’
Speaking to the assembly before the vote, Haley – who earlier in the week told members that the US “would be taking names” – returned to the offensive.
“I must also say today: when we make generous contributions to the UN, we also have expectation that we will be respected,” she said.
“What’s more, we are being asked to pay for the dubious privileges of being disrespected.”
Haley added: “If our investment fails, we have an obligation to spend our investment in other ways … The United States will remember this day.”
In his own speech Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, said UN members who backed the resolution were being manipulated. “You are like puppets pulled by your Palestinian masters,” he told the session.
While Thursday’s resolution was in support of existing UN resolutions on Jerusalem and the peace process, the clumsy intervention by Trump and Haley also made the vote a referendum on Trump’s often unilateral and abrasive foreign policy.
The debate and vote highlighted for a second time in a week the international isolation of the United States over the Jerusalem issue, following a similar vote in the security council on Tuesdayin which it was outnumbered 14-1.
US hard-power diplomacy over Israel will end up being an expensive clash if Washington cuts its funding to the UN
The threatening US posture, which had been denounced as both counter-productive and “bullying”, only seemed to have hardened the resolve of countries in opposing Trump’s 6 December move.
The resolution, co-sponsored by Turkey and Yemen, called Trump’s recognition “null and void” and reaffirmed 10 security council resolutions on Jerusalem, dating back to 1967, including requirements that the city’s final status must be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
It also “demands that all states comply with security council resolutions regarding the holy city of Jerusalem, and not to recognise any actions or measures contrary to those resolutions.”[myad]

Buhari Foresees Danger If Justice System Is Not Stripped Of Indiscipline, Corruption

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to work with the government to stem the danger posed by the justice system that is ridden with indiscipline and corruption.
One of such dangers, the President stressed, is the possible collapse of public confidence in such justice system, emphasising the need for the leadership in the judiciary to effectively tackle indiscipline and corruption.
The President, who received in audience today, Thursday, the National Executive Committee (NEC), expressed worries about allegations of the roles of some senior lawyers in attempts to corrupt judges and the judicial system.
“Let me reiterate that the collapse of public confidence in the justice system will have disastrous effects on our democracy and will negatively affect the capacity of the legal profession to thrive and flourish in the country.”
President Buhari gave assurances that his administration will continue to operate on a foundation of the Rule of Law.
“We are convinced that corruption and impunity flourish when due process mechanisms are disregarded. We, however, expect a corresponding duty on the part of all professional bodies such as the NBA to ensure the highest forms of discipline among their members.”
The President advised the members of the legal profession, whom he described as opinion builders in their various communities, to work for the public enlightenment of the citizenry, and to support the initiatives of government in sanitizing the public services, improving standards of public accountability and the insistence on the normal standards of judicial integrity.
He emphasized that government will continue to dwell on its programmes of a vigorous anti-corruption campaign; ensuring the recovery of looted national assets; prosecution of an effective and sustainable anti-terrorism war; and the institutionalization of law and order in all aspects of our national life.
President Buhari thanked members of the NBA for their support so far, even as he assured them of his readiness to work with the bar association and the Judiciary to achieve needed reforms.
In his remarks, the President of the NBA, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmud, (SAN), commended President Buhari for his confidence in the members of the association, considering the number of lawyers in high places in the administration.
These included the Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari; the Attorney-General of Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) and five other ministers as well as the Permanent Secretary in the State House, Jalal Arabi.
The NBA President also lauded the administration for its efforts, and expressed the Bar’s continued support in the war against corruption, terrorism and general insecurity as well as the ongoing work to institute good governance and revamp the economy.
He, however, brought to the attention of President Buhari NBA’s concerns on prisons’ congestion, the need for compliance with judicial decisions and the modus operandi of some of the anti-corruption agencies.[myad]

UN Turns Its Back On President Trump Over Jerusalem

U.S President, Donald Trump
U.S President, Donald Trump

The United Nations General Assembly today, Thursday, overwhelmingly turned its back on President Donald Trump of the United State of America, over his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The General Assembly, which met today, threw away President Trump’s decision despite U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s warning that the move could put funding for their nations and the global body at risk.
The non-binding UN resolution was passed today, Thursday, by a vote of 128-9, with 35 nations abstaining. The U.S. vote in opposition was joined by countries, including Guatemala, Nauru and Micronesia.
Key abstentions came from Australia, Canada, Argentina and Romania.
“The United States will remember this day when it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly,” Haley said at the United Nations podium ahead of the vote.
“We will remember it when so many countries come calling on us, as they often do, to pay even more. This vote will be remembered.”
By the vote, the U.N had defied President Trump’s earlier threat. More details later.

How We Generated N1 Trillion In 2017, Nigerian Customs Service Gives Details

Nigerian Custom Boss, Hameed Ali
Nigeria’s Custom Boss, Hameed Ali

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced details of how it was able to record the highest revenue collection ever, of N1,012,259,006,779.74 with five more working days to the end of 2017.
A statement today, Thursday, by the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Joseph Attah said that the performance in revenue collection shows N241,685,276,289.74 over the N770,573,730,490 target for the year and is above the N898,673,857,431.07 collected in 2016.
The statement said that despite the economic recession experienced earlier in the year with low volume of imports, occasioned by restriction placed on 41 items from accessing forex, the Comptroller-General of Customs, retired Colonel Hameed Ibrahim Ali undertook some strategic measures in terms of restructuring and repositioning the Service for efficient service delivery which resulted in the highest revenue figure.
“To achieve this feat, the CGC took the following measures among others:-
*  Strategic redeployment of Officers and Men.
*  Overhauling and re-training of the operatives of the Customs Intelligence Unit.
*  Maximizing the potentials of automation through monitoring, tracking infractions, blocking and recovering lost revenues.
*  Re-invigoration of anti-smuggling operations, setting up a Compliance Team to serve as the third layer of security.
*  A regime of prompt reward for hard work and punishment for wrong-doing.
*  Transparent promotion process strictly based on merit.
*  Deliberate and sustained sensitization/Stakeholder engagements across the Country, e.t.c.
“(hese and other administrative measures of the current Management of the Service continues to motivate the workforce towards selfless pursuit of NCS and indeed the nation’s goals.
“Ruthless anti-smuggling operations which resulted in over four thousand (4000) assorted seizures with over N11 billion in value also helped to increase levels of compliance in terms of honest declarations and correct payment of duties by traders to avoid loss of their goods and possible jail term. “These seizures include the spectacular 2,671 pump action riffles, dangerous drugs, rice, vehicles e.t.c.”
The statement said that the perfomance would have been more than the one recorded if it were not the paucity of funds, adding however that despite that, the NCS strived to deliver, sometime even at the risk of sustaining serious injuries and or even death.
“Sadly, in the process of enforcing the laws, six Officers fell in the line of duty this year.
“While 2017 draws to an end with rich harvest of seizures and high revenue collection for the Federal Government, the Service is not unmindful of the activities of unpatriotic elements that are still bent on sabotaging the Fiscal Policies of Government, especially in the areas of rice and vehicles smuggling through the land borders.
“Accordingly, the CGC has directed sustained onslaught against smugglers especially at this festive period. He however in the spirit of the season, enjoyed all stakeholders to reflect on the values of patriotism and resolve to avoid all forms of smuggling.
“From the performances of the NCS in the out-going year 2017, it is clear that given the right leadership and better support from Nigerians, NCS will continue to play a more pivotal role in the security and economic well-being of the nation.” [myad]

PDP Chairman Describes Story On Atiku Working For APC, As Laughable Fabrication

Prince Uche Secondus
Prince Uche Secondus

The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus has described as laughable fabrication, the news making the round in the media that he ever said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who recently returned to the party is working as agent for both President Muhammedu Buhari and the ruling APC.
Secondus said that he would not have bothered to respond to such fabrication “but because of record and some harmless social media followers who may fall victim of such dangerous distortions, we want to say that Prince Secondus got his mandate riding on his experience in party management.
“Such experience includes but not limited to knowing what to say, how to say it and when.”
A statement today by the chairman’s media team said that Secondus knows as National Chairman that after December 10, 2017 mandate, he has become the leader of all members of the party, including all its Presidential hopefuls.
“He cannot for any reason position himself in favour or disfavor of any of the aspirants and this applies to all levels of the party.
“Aware of the enormous challenges before him, of rebuilding, repositioning and regaining power come 2019, the PDP National Chairman is presently preoccupied with huge task ahead of him.
Secondu’s media alerted Nigerians that in coming days and months, more of such baseless publications would be seen ostensibly to distract him and create division.
“But we would not be distracted. We therefore want to advice members of the public to disregard any of such publications not from our office or from credible media houses.”

Army Ransack Jigawa Village For Alleged Arms Stockpile; Shiite Kicks

Nigerian Soldiers
Nigerian Soldiers

Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army, yesterday, Wednesday, swarm Tsangarwa village in Gwaram Local government of Jigawa state in search of alleged arm stockpile, even as the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as Shiite, described the action of the army as uncall for.
The action of the soldiers was said to be as a result of an intelligent information that Shiite group was going to revenge for the Zaria massacre in December 2015.
But, the IMN said that such allegation is ridiculous and “is clearly a pretence by soldiers to execute their hidden sinister motives.”
The invasion of the army on the village was made known by the Shiite itself, saying that heavily armed Soldiers of Operation Lafiya Dole in three trucks, arrested two members of the Islamic Movement living.
“The soldiers initially arrived the town allegedly acting on a tip off and conducted a house to house search on members of the Islamic Movement but found nothing incriminating.
“The soldiers claimed they were tipped that members of the Islamic Movement in the town were piling up arms with a view to taking revenge for the Zaria massacre by the military in December 2015. This ridiculous allegation is clearly a pretence by soldiers to execute their hidden agenda.
“We have always made it clear, times without number, that Sheikh Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement in Nigeria is a peaceful mass Movement, whose forty-year history is devoid of any resort to violence in the pursuit of its objectives. “Not even after the murderous mission of the military in Zaria, were arms recovered as attested by the report of the Kaduna state Commission of Inquiry.
“This is a clear vindication of our position on use of arms, that only the insane would use weapons to propagate ideas rather than positive thinking, reasoning and use of proofs.
“We therefore strongly condemn the military action in strong terms, and call on them to unconditionally release them immediately. They have committed no offense. We also insist that there must not be a repeat of such intimidation anywhere again.”[myad]

Any act of disloyalty to the system, disobedience to constituted authority and insubordination will be decisively dealt with and defaulters shown the way out.” The Army Chief asked the new officer to avail themselves with the approved Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service as it applies to their Commission.  “The NA is strictly guided by this document in its engagements and re-engagement of its personnel.”
Buratai emphasize that as a professional Army, there are established channels of communication with regards to official matters, correspondences and even expression of grievances.
“You are to be guided by these channels throughout your career.”
He refreshed the memories of the new entrants on the long time involvement of the Army in combat operations against terrorist groups, especially, in the North-East where Op LAFIYA DOLE is ongoing.
“At the same time, other personnel have been involved in conducting various anti-banditry operations in various parts of the country especially in the North-Central Region.
“The South- South Region has equally been plagued by the activities of Niger Delta militants who are bent on crippling the economy of the nation by engaging in wanton destruction of crude oil and petroleum infrastructures.”
