A court in Kenya has sentenced a University lecturer, Sheila Wanjiku Kibinge to death for killing her husband over family property.

Sheila Wanjiku Kibinge, who is a lecturer in the US and also a Ph.D student, was handed the sentence on Tuesday by High Court Judge Jessie Lessit.

“The prosecution, led by State Prosecutor Evelyn Onunga, has proved beyond reasonable doubt that you purposed to kill your husband although you allege you were both kidnapped the night your husband was executed,” Justice Lessit said.

The judge dismissed her defence that her husband was killed by kidnappers. The judge said that she murdered her husband by shooting him in the head, neck and chest in Gitaru village, Kikuyu, Kiambu County.

“The number of shots fired at the deceased, Leonard Kibinge Kiruri on the night of April 14, 2014, establishes pre-meditated malice aforethought,” Justice Lessit stated.

Sheila, however pleaded for leniency, but the judge said, “there is only one verdict provided for in the law and that is “to suffer death in the manner prescribed by the law.”[myad]

Immigration Boss Warns Nigerians: You Won’t Qualify For International Passport Unless You’ve National Identity Card

nimc2The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mohammed Babadede has warned Nigerians to obtain their electronic National Identity Cards before January next year as they would be one of the conditions for obtaining International Passport.
The Immigration boss, who spoke to news men after a meeting of the National Identity Management Harmonization committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said that every citizen must possess the National Identity Number as a condition to apply for the Nigerian passport.
“We have agreed that from 1st January 2018, anybody who is going to apply for the Nigerian Passport, whether renewal or fresh, must first have a national identity number. Why we are doing this is we want to ease business for Nigerians.
“There is no need for you to go and have your bio metric captured by NIMC and then you come and capture again with the Nigeria Immigration. Once you give us your NIN number we will collect the bio metric from NIMC and produce your passport. That is the intention to do in all other agencies.”
Mohammed Babadede said that foreigners residing in Nigeria were not exempted, as they will also require number when renewing their residence permit.
“I have also given directive that any foreigner, non-Nigerian resident in Nigeria will not get his permit renewed. He or she will not get his renewal until he has a NIN. To achieve this, NIMC NIN and passport numbers will be harmonized and we are committed to allow NIMC in Immigration. All NIMC staff can work in our passport offices.
“So when you come to get the passport you can also get the National identity card. The NIM-C has also allowed immigration staff to work in their offices so anybody who is coming to claim Nigerian citizenship; they will help to identify that citizen. That is the cooperation that we have had so far.”
The Federal Government had, in 2014, ordered all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and security organizations involved in all forms of biometric data capture of Nigerians to complete their registrations and handover to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The committee’s today, Tuesday, is in continuation of the efforts to achieve the harmonization process.

Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo waving school children in Kebbi state

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has assured governors elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) that Nigerians have not lost faith in the ability of the party to deliver its campaign promises.
“The people have not lost faith in us; they understand that the task of clearing decades of debris will take time but we must also jointly keep faith with them.”
Professor Osinbajo spoke today in Birnin Kebbi, capital of Kebbi state, at the conclusion of a Federal Government- Progressives Governors’ Forum parley.
He reassured Nigerians that the APC-led Federal Government will not fail in its determination to deliver on its promises despite numerous challenges facing the economy and the country.
Professor Osinbajo advised state governors elected on the platform of the party to make extra efforts to deliver on the promises of the party, adding: “the ideological difference that we represent is that we are committed to an economic policy that has at its core the welfare and happiness of Nigerians.
“The people expect us to deliver on all of what we have promised. They expect a better life, we have assured them of a better life, and I can say for all of us who are present here, all of us in the progressive forum, that we will deliver a better life to the people of Nigeria.”
He emphasized the need for a stronger collaboration between the Federal and State governments, adding: “ultimately, the success of the efforts to bring about synergy in Federal and State Government policies would depend on both sides meeting their commitments.”
“Just as the federal government is committed and has taken visible steps in meeting its obligations and make refunds on debts owed to states, it’s imperative for states to play its own parts.
“There are two obvious elements here: when the Federal Government provides relief resources, the resources are used for the agreed purposes. The second is to implement agreements that have been reached in specific sectoral contexts.
“For instance, states must continue to work toward implementing their parts of the fiscal sustainability plan in order to improve their individual fiscal situations which impacts on the national fiscal picture.”
The Acting President identified key areas of collaboration between the Federal and State governments to include “scaling up Internally Generated Revenue and innovative thinking.”
He emphasizing that states, especially those led by APC governors must think out of the box in delivering service to the people, including in areas where their efforts can complement the Federal Government programmes.
Professor Osinbajo visited Argungu where he commissioned the multi-billion rice mill.
At the commissioning, Acting President stressed that the way to go is to energize agriculture and lift Nigerians to new levels of productivity.
“The commissioning of the rice mill in Argungu is a proof of growth in agriculture with thousands of job creation.
“The growth and development witnessed in the agricultural sector differ from the jobless growth of the past.”
The Acting President also attended an exhibition of agricultural products and farm inputs in Argungu before returning to Abuja.

Count Us Out Of Biafra Republic – Anambra State

Obiano
Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano

The move to actualise the Sovereign Republic Biafra suffered a terrible setback as the indigenes of Anambra State, under the auspices of Anambra Peoples Assembly (APA), have distanced the State from the Biafra struggle and secession.
They warned Biafra agitators and Nnamdi Kanu, their Leader, to maintain a distance from the State, while pledging loyalty to Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its Coordinator, Mazi Nnamdi Okorafor, the group declared that the people of Anambra State are law-abiding and will not be dragged along by any individual, or group of persons.
“I will assume that there are no men in Igbo land, if we allow a small boy to drag all of us into war against Nigeria, through hate speech”, he said.
“Nnamdi Kanu is making a fool of himself, very soon his paymasters will distance themselves from him. He and his illiterate minions will be dancing alone in the market square naked. Being Igbo does not mean you are an IPOB member, neither does being an IPOB Leader, make you the Leader of the Igbos”, he stated.
He also described Kanu as a confusionist, who suggests ideas capable of destroying lives, while he left his family in the United Kingdom, UK.
“Let truth be told. But with due respect to the right thinking and illustrious sons and daughters of Abia State. Let me ask these questions, When did an Abia man become wiser than the Anambra man, to warrant a confusionist like Nnamdi Kanu to order Anambra people not to vote, while his Abia Governor is still on seat?
“Why would the good, wise, and hard-working Anambra sons and daughters listen to a guy man who kept his wife and kids in London, come here to suggest what is capable of destroying the lives of young Anambra youths. Anambra people should not allow anybody to toy with their future and destiny.
“We agree that self-determination is the right of every person or group in Nigeria, that being said. We hereby declare that Anambra State has distanced self from Biafra struggle. All Biafra activists and agitators are warned to leave Anambra and return to their various States of origin.
“We are too big to be dragged along by any person or group of persons. Anambra State indigenes and lawful residents, will register and participate fully in the forthcoming Governorship elections of November 2017, in the State.” [myad]

Saraki Forfeits His Monthly Pension As Former Kwara Governor

sarakiThe President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has announced the forfeiture of his monthly pension which he had been collecting from Kwara State as its former governor.
The Senate President, who featured in a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja today, Tuesday, said that he had written a letter to the state government to stop the payment of the pension.
Saraki confessed that his decision stemmed from complaints in some quarters that former governors who are currently senators or ministers were receiving pension and salary in their new jobs, all from the government.
A civil society organisation, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), had accused the former governors of receiving double pay from government, and said it was illegal.
“No, I’m not collecting pension; the moment I saw that allegation, I wrote to my state to stop my pension.
“So, I speak for myself on that part; I’m not doing that, I am not receiving pension from my state.”
Answering question, Senator Saraki said: “I think I will leave everybody to their individual decision.
“Morally, if you have got another job, you should give it up until when you are truly a pensioner.
“Some of these oversights are not addressing the issues. What the states should do is to go and amend their laws to say that if you have another appointment then you are not entitled to that benefit.
“With this, we will just simplify the matter.”
On the role of Bank of Infrastructure in the country, the Senate President said that the Senate had not had any serious interface with the bank, but that it was involved in some projects.
“We are not engaging with them particularly. I think that they were part of those involved in the Lagos-Ibadan road. But, I don’t think government should really put funds into that.
“I have this strong view and I feel very strongly about it, that nowhere in the world has government funded infrastructure.
“Government cannot, and even if government can fund infrastructure projects, the social sector will suffer – health will suffer and education will suffer.’’
He said there were a lot of complaints that budgetary allocation to health and education was too low, attributing it to the fact that much money was being invested in infrastructure development.
Senator Saraki said that due to the challenges, the National Assembly had passed bills that would encourage private sector participation in infrastructure development.
“What should happen is that we should try and get private sector to take over some of these infrastructure so that the money can go into education and health.
“By doing that, banks like Bank of infrastructure will come in.
“We are really pushing the idea of, particularly, the Lagos-Ibadan road, that appropriating that project from the budget does not show seriousness.
“This is a road that is very viable; that is centre of the commercial activity and we should see how private sector can participate.
“For example, even if you go by the budgetary allocation on that road, last year was N30 billion, this year, after back and forth, we took it back to N20 billion.
“This was done so that if they don’t find private funding, we will take it up.”
According to him, even if the N30 billion was provided, it will not be enough because that road needs about N100 billion to be completed.
“So, the point I’m making which I want to emphasise is that it is the kind of laws and policies that we pass that will encourage private sector that will make the infrastructure deficit to reduce.
“Government alone cannot reduce infrastructure deficit.”
He confirmed that the senators had fulfilled their October, 2016 pledge to contribute N300, 000 each to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East.
He said that the senate would continue to tackle humanitarian crisis in the North-East through budgetary appropriations.
“I think that to the best of my knowledge, that is happening but it goes beyond just that. I think that we have shown that we will continue to support in form of appropriation of adequate money.
“As you saw just last week, we also approved some foreign loan that will go toward supporting activities in the North-East as palliative means to fight humanitarian crisis.
“We are close to about 800 million dollars we approved for the executive from that point of view.
“We are always ready to support our men and women in uniform to ensure that whatever they required was provided.”
Senator Saraki said that the lawmakers have being meeting with a lot of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to provide support to the North-East.
“We are looking at the possibility of what we can do to create more incentives for Nigerians.
“We are approaching individuals and companies to make more donations and see what kind of concessions they can get for the kind of donations they are making in the North-East.”
