Nigerian Woman Gives Birth To Quadruplets, Trapped In UK Hospital Over £500,000 Bill

Mum born quadruplets in London

A 43 year old Nigerian woman simply named Priscilla, has given birth to a set of quadruplets and is currently trapped in a London hospital as she cannot settle more than £500,000 medical bill.

Priscilla was said to be returning to Nigeria through London when she started having contractions shortly after landing at Heathrow airport in November 2016, three months to her Expected Day of Delivery (EDD).

According to Daily Mail, she had intended to give birth to the babies in Chicago, in the United States (U.S.), where she has a family but was turned away by border officials upon arrival.

They claimed that although she had a visa, she did not have required documents from a hospital stating that she had the money to pay for the birth.

Priscilla, a healthcare worker, said she was returning to Nigeria via London when she started having contractions.

She was taken to the Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in west London, part of Imperial College Hospital, where she was delivered the four babies.

One of the babies died shortly after birth while another, a girl named Deborah, passed away on Saturday.

The other two, Elijah and Esther, are still being treated on the hospital’s neonatal intensive care ward.

It is estimated that the total bill for the highly complex birth and the care of the babies is already more than £500,000

The cost of treating one baby in neonatal intensive care in the hospital is £20,000 a week.

Priscilla is currently staying at a hostel run by a charity and is unable to afford the bill.

Her husband is in Nigeria, and cannot come to Britain to help take care of her as he does not have enough money for a visa or the flight.

Priscilla underwent IVF treatment, which has a high risk of multiple births, as she was struggling to conceive naturally due to her age.

Her case is revealed tonight in the BBC 2 documentary Hospital, which exposes the pressures of health tourism on the trust.

When first warned of the high treatment costs by overseas visitor manager Terry Facey, she said: ‘I didn’t plan to come here.

“It’s only money. Money can’t buy life. The last bill I had was £331,000 but even if I worked every day, I would never earn that much money. My kids are priceless.”

Mr. Facey, who worked at the trust for 12 years trying to collect bills for overseas patients said: “those invoices are going to be huge … 20 grand a week for each baby in intensive care.” [myad]

The Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Friday Osanebi from the ward 08 of the party in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.

Also suspended indefinitely was the 2007 governorship aspirant of the party, Godwill Obielum as well as Mr. Ugo Asibelua and Emmanuel Onyeukwu.

The PDP Chairman for  ward 08 , Kris Oputah said that the indefinite suspension was slammed on the erring members for allegedly convening “an illegal meeting” of some disgruntled leaders at a private home in Ushie on January 29, 2017, with the aim of  disparaging the party.

Oputah also accused them of personalizing the constitution of the party and goofed in their bid to explain with impunity and disregard some laid down principal guidelines for the conduct of congresses.

According to Oputah in a statement, the suspended stalwarts have plotted to run the party aground in their constituency, lamenting that the affected persons single-handedly declared fractionalisation that never existed in the party.

“It is disheartening that those who wish to be taken seriously as wanting to lead the people of Ndosimili could descend so low to personalizing a constitutional matter of the magnitude of party congress.

“We have been patient all these while, now is the time to halt their arrogance and perpetual falsehood. They cannot continue to paint lurid picture of Ndosimili people as uneducated, uninformed and lacking in true leadership. The party in Ndokwa East hereby suspends them with effect from February 1, 2017, indefinitely.”

The statement said that they abused “the genial disposition of Ndosimili people by trivializing the injuries they have inflicted on the people by their mediocre leadership” and frowned at their “flagrant abuse of the privileges conferred on them by the mandate of Ndosimili people and their conniving cohorts.” [myad]

Presidency Moves To End Rising Food Prices, Sets Up Task Force

Food items

The Presidency has taken step to put an end to the rising food prices in the country by setting up a Presidential Task Force at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today, Wednesday.

The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who constituted the Task Force, expressed concern at some of the inflationary rates of food prices.

He said that the Task Force will explore options to promote availability and affordability of food items to Nigerians.

According to him, the Task Force, which has seven days from today to report back to the Council, will consider how to remove some of the cost-raising factors that come into play between the farms and the markets and therefore “bring relief to our people.”

While there have been reports of bumper harvests in parts of the country, the prices of food stuff are still high, even as some of the produce are wasting as a result of a number of reasons preventing effective transportation delivery to the markets.

One of the focus areas of the Task Force, Porofessor Osinbajo said, would be to review the transportation and preservation processes, and see how government can intervene in those aspects to bring down food prices.

The Task Force, which would be meeting with the acting President in the discharge of its assignment, will draw out a practical plan and present same to the Council next week.

Members of the Task Force are:

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh

Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun

Minister of Industry, Trade and Development, Dr. Okey Enelamah

Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi

Minister for Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige

The Offices of the Chief of Staff to the President and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, would also be on the Task Force. [myad]

Pastor Apologizes To Congregation For Sleeping With Another Man’s Wife

Man sex daughter

A 37 year old Pastor O. Jermaine Simmons has apologized to his congregation for having sex with a woman from the congregation in the middle of the afternoon. He reportedly fled from the scene of the incidence, naked, when the husband of his mistress caught them in sexual bout.

Pastor Simmons was at Claynisha Stephens’ home in Tallahassee, Florida, to discuss a charity project when they became intimate on her daughter’s bed at around 2pm on January 17.

They were caught less than an hour later by her husband, 38 year old Benjamin, who had returned home with their sick six-year-old son after getting a call from his school.

Teachers had tried to reach Mrs. Stephens, 34, but she didn’t answer the phone having already gotten into bed with the pastor, a police report indicated.

The husband, furious to have found the pair in throws of passion, threatened Simmons: “I’m going to kill you!”whereupon the pastor ran away without his clothes, keys, phone or wallet to hide in a fence as his lover’s husband retrieved a handgun from his bedroom.

Mrs. Stephens stood in front of her husband, begging him not to shoot anyone in front of their son. She called the police when her husband fled in his car.

Simmons has since apologized to Jacob Chapel Baptist Church and revealed that his wife is standing by him. Mrs. Stephens told police how her husband had grown suspicious of her relationship with the pastor.

She said they had been building a bond since October last year and that on the day in question; he had visited her apartment to discuss potential charity work but that they became intimate.

“Mr. Simmons had come to her residence and they engaged in sexual activity.

“As they were so engaged, staff at the school attempted to contact (the woman) via telephone to inform her that her six-year-old son was ill,’ the police report read.

“After failing to reach her, staff at the school contacted (her husband who) retrieved his son from the school and transported him to the residence.

“When (he) arrived at the residence with their son, he discovered her and Mr Simmons lying upon her daughter’s bed engaged in sexual activity.

“He loudly exclaimed ‘I’m going to kill him’ at which point Mr Simmons immediately fled from the apartment in a state of undress.” [myad]

Ebonyi Governor Empowers 12,000 Workers, Youths

Ebonyi Gov signs budgetThe Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, has flagged the state government’s empowerment programmes for 8,000 civil servants and 4,000 youths in the state.

At the ceremony which held at the Abakaliki Township Stadium in Abakaliki, the  governor  said that a lot of people have keyed into the programmes and  expressed his gratitude to them for believing in the initiatives aimed at boosting food production in the state and economic potential  of the people.

He said that no amount of money would be enough to satisfy the yearnings of the people  in time of economic recession, even as he advised those  profiled for  the schemes  to properly utilize the funds  in order to increase their income.

The governor, according to a statement on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, said:  “I’m very convinced that God wants to use Ebonyi State to set example for the project of Nigeria.

“The speed and the spirit at which our civil servants have demonstrated in support of this programme can be nothing other than divine. I’ve said that no governor and nobody in the kind of society we are now can permanently please  all the civil servants. It is not possible.

“It is the fault of the situation we’ve all found ourselves but we offer you an opportunity to change our world and better our days.”

The governor, who   announced that Thursdays and Fridays had been declared work-free days for participants to enable them go to their farms, stressed  that opportunities abound in agriculture, especially in the areas  of fishery,   rice  and  cassava cultivations.

“Some people may not have full understanding of what we are about to begin but go and talk to those that benefitted from FADAMA III last year. Talk to those that benefitted from IFAD last year. If 6,000 plus got N4 billion into their coffers within four months, then find out whether we are joking.”

The governor later distributed symbolic cheques to some beneficiaries of the empowerment programmes.
The state Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Empowerment programmes, Dr. Eric Kelechi Igwe, emphasized that the schemes were  in fulfillment of Governor Umahi’s promise to prosper the people.

In their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Economic Empowerment and Job Creation, Chief Donatus Njoku and the State Head of Service, Dr. Chamberlain Nwele as well as the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ikechukwu Nwafor appreciated  Umahi for his commitment towards the welfare of the people. Group Condemns Media Attack On Ex Delta Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan

Emmanuel OnwubikoA None Governmental Organization (NGO), the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has condemned the media attack on the former Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan by those it called mushroom but politically motivated group of individuals.
The National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, who spoke to news men in Abuja, along with officials of the Nigerian Human Rights Queen (2017), Miss Chioma Okoli and others, said that some political blackmailers have been pushing HURIWA to be part of a sinister plot to stage street protests to the premises of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to attempt to hoodwink the hierarchy of the anti-graft panel to begin systematic witch-hunt of the immediate past administration of Delta State.
Onwubiko wondered why unscrupulous persons sometimes with powerful political sponsorship would seek to continuously attempt to recruit registered groups that have credibility to do some sinister campaign when legally such organizations can be sued by those politically exposed persons whose reputations are being tarnished on the alter of sensational media stories.
He said that the ongoing mass demonization and character assassination of some members of the political class whose political tenures in various offices have remained untainted has created the erroneous impression that all political office holders in Nigeria are corrupt.
Onwubiko said: “This is a fallacy with far reaching negative implication for the standing in the international community of civilised nations of the Nigerian Nation State.”
He noted that it has become imperative for it to go public with this information so Nigerians would be made aware of the existence of many phantom groups, whose major preoccupation is to stoke the embers of hatred against targeted high profile Nigerians just because such persons may not have agreed to be blackmailed into paying huge pay outs to such professional and career blackmailers.
“These evil intentioned Nigerians are exploiting the notorious fact that corruption as a major factor that contributed to the under-development of Nigeria has understandably forced the current government to focus extensively on waging anti-graft war.”
Onwubiko warned against the deployment of crude and illegal process of mass hysteria and choreographed media trial to engage in the ongoing crusade to eradicate corruption and economic crimes.
“We urge officials of EFCC to strive to maintain high professional decorum even as they relentlessly chase after corrupt politicians.
“EFCC as an agency set up by law must operate within the ambit of principle of rule of law and abide by all constitutional provisions.
“We were approached by some professional political blackmailers from Delta State to make our organization available to be used as a weapon of mass politically motivated battle against the person and character of the former governor of Delta State but we declined on the ground that the allegations against Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan are not only false but are well orchestrated campaign of calumny meant to prepare the ground for the media trial of the immediate past governor.
“We also declined to participate because we know with available records that as the governor of Delta State, Dr. Uduaghan carried out landmark programmes and projects that significantly improved greater respect to the Human Rights of Delta State residents.
“The then administration transparently handed over to the current administration.
“As a credible Civil Society platform that has been on ground for 10 years now, HURIWA meticulously monitored the immediate past administration of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and we can without any fear of contradiction assert that with the evidence at our disposal, those allegations being bandied about are frivolous, unsubstantiated, malicious and lacks credibility.
“How on Earth could the former governor have pocketed a whooping N800 billion and was able to consistently pay salaries for eight years and implemented far reaching impactful projects for the people of Delta State?
“Our fundamental reason for not making our platform available for media trial of politically exposed persons who we know had discharged their constitutional duties creditably is because the abundance of provisions in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 that frowns against media trial of all persons.
“Specifically, Section 36 (1) provides thus: ‘In the determination of his civil rights and obligations, including any question or determination by or against any government or authority, a person shall be entitled to a fair hearing within a reasonable time by a court or other tribunal established by law and constituted in such manner as to secure its independence and impartiality.’
“Importantly Section 36 (5) has it that even when any person has been charged in the competent court of law, the person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“We use this medium to appeal to reputable groups in the organized civil society community not to allow the current economic recession to push them into making their organizations available for political witch-hunt.”
HURIWA boss said that those championing these campaigns of calumny have ulterior motives to railroad the judiciary into passing thoughtful verdicts against their perceived political opponents whenever the anti-graft agency is arm-twisted to head to court.
“It is our conviction that EFCC will not allow blackmailers to push them into embarking on wild goose chase which will cost taxpayers billions of cash that could have been deployed to provide social services and other democracy dividends.
“Judicial independence is essentially composed of two foundations (i.e individual and institutional) that cumulatively ensure the independence of the judiciary.
“Independence of the judiciary means that every judge is free to decide matters before him in accordance with his assessment of the facts and his understanding of the law, without any improper influences, inducement, or pressures, direct or indirect, in any quarter or for any reason; and that the judiciary is independent from the executive and legislature, and has jurisdiction directly, or indirectly, or by way of review, over all issues of a judicial nature 15.
“See ‘Judicial Independence: the contemporary debate’, Shimon Shetreet and Jules Deschenes eds: 1985.
“Justice Musdapher also reminds us that: ‘Impartiality is essential to the proper discharge of the judicial office. It applies not only to the decision itself but also to the process by which decisions are made. Judges must perform their judicial duties without favour, bias or prejudice and ensure that their conduct both in and out of court maintains and enhances the confidences of the public, the legal profession and the litigants in the impartiality of the judicial system.’
“As a Civil Society group active in the media, we are aware of the existence of verifiable documentary evidence to show that the last administration in Delta State achieved many landmark projects that improved human development such as the following: “100 bed Mother & Child Unit at Central Hospital in Warri; Upgrade renal unit (including installation of chemotherapy machine) at Central Hospital in Warri; Construction of 18km Trans Ode Itsekiri road project, including 24 bridges; Construction of Internal roads in Ode Itsekiri; Dualization of Okumagba Avenue and Deco Roads in Warri; Commissioning of 300 kilometers of streetlights in Warri, Asaba, Ughelli and Sapele; Uplifting and improvement work at Jakpa and Enerhen Junctions; Construction of fly over at Effurun Roundabout; Construction of 169 kilometres Federal Government owned Ughelli -Asaba highway including completion of section B of the Road; Payment for West African Examination Council Exam for SS3 students for seven years; Free education for primary and secondary pupils and students; Payment of bursary and scholarship for Delta State students in higher institutions; Payment of N5 million to first class graduates from any institution of higher learning to pursue postgraduate studies anywhere in the world; Free maternal care from conception till delivery, including caesarian section (surgery); Free health care for children from zero to five years and elderly above 65 years; Free Mobile clinic to boost rural health care; provision of more than 1000 Buses and Taxis as intervention into the transportation sector, including the construction of modern bus stops and parks; Subsidizing of transport fares of mass transit buses by 50 per cent and free buses for children in public schools; Dualization of Refinery Road in Warri; Completion of Jakpa Road Dualization; Completion of the Odion Road/Cemetery Road; amongst others.
“Whilst not holding brief for ex-Governor Uduaghan, we make haste to denounce the current blackmail in a section of the media and advice the relevant agencies to play by the Rule of Law.” [myad]

Leaking Mouths Land Ekiti Lawmaker, Fayose’s Media Aide In N3 Billion Libel Suit

Governor Kayode Fayemi
Governor Kayode Fayemi

Former Governor of Ekiti State and Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has dragged a member of Ekiti House of Assembly, Dr Samuel Omotoso; and Special Assistant on New Media and Public Communications to Governor Ayodele Fayose, Mr. Lere Olayinka, to court, claiming N3 billion as damages for opening their mouths too wide to say what they would not be able to prove.

The libel suit which was instituted against the duo over offensive statements made against him came after they failed to retract the libellous statements and tender public apology as demanded by Fayemi’s counsel, Rafiu Oyeyemi Balogun, in a letter dated November 19, 2016.

The Minister, in the suit number 6/577/2016, filed at the High Court of the federal Capital territory in the Abuja Judicial Division, is seeking among others, payment of an aggravated damages to the tune of N3billion. (N2 billion against Lere Olayinka, the first defendant and another N1bilion aggravated damages against Dr. Omotoso, the second defendant).

Besides, the plaintiff is also seeking a retraction of the offensive statements/utterances; a public apology to be published and aired on Ekiti State Television and Channels Television as well as the social media.
He is also seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from publishing or making statements or utterances similar or further libellous publications or statements or utterances against the plaintiff.

The duo of Omotoso and Olayinka had during an EKTV live programme also broadcast on a cable network Startimes, tagged Ejiire on July 6, 2016 alleged that Fayemi illegally took N1.5b from Ekiti treasury and gave it to the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, to win the 2015 presidential election.

Olayinka also said that Fayemi illegally collected N5 billion from Ecobank in the name of Fountain Holdings for purported road construction. He also alleged that Fayemi spent the state’s funds to build a private university for himself in Ghana.

For failing to retract the offending statements and tender public apology within the stipulated period, Fayemi’s counsel is asking the court for reliefs compelling the defendants to pay damages for the statements against him which had portrayed him as a “very corrupt public office holder and fraudulent person who siphoned public funds at the detriment of Ekiti citizens while serving as governor”.

Balogun also argued that his client was exposed to “public ridicule, odium, opprobrium, embarrassment and unprecedented disrepute”, arguing that the duo had done “incalculable and tremendous injury to our client’s image and personality as an international figure”.

The plaintiff averred that having regard to the nature of the libel, the wider publication of the offending statements and posting same on Internet, and having done it maliciously and failure to apologize to him when requested to do so, he is entitled to aggravated damages from the defendants.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the case. [myad]

Stakeholders Pass Vote Of No Confidence On Kogi Governor

Yahaya Bello 5Stakeholders, made up of former ministers, former ambassadors, former National Assembly members and others have passed a vote of no confidence on the Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
The group, who met with the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo today at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said that Kogi State has stopped working since Yahaya Bello assumed office.
Speaking to news men shortly after their meeting with Osinbajo, leader of the team and member of the House of Representatives, James Faleke said that the Governor’s unsavory actions were inimical to the future of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Faleke, who was a strong contender to the Kogi governorship seat and running mate of the late Prince Abubakar Audu on the platform of the APC, said that the people are dying of hunger as a result of the leadership style of Governor Yahaya Bello.
“We came to the presidency to let federal government know what is happening in Kogi state as regards the fortunes of the party; the way it is dwindling day by day as regards the civil servants; the welfare of the people and their relationship with the state government.
“We have come to let the presidency know so that when elections come and the party losses, no one is to be blamed. We want intervention from the federal government to find a way forward in this situation.
“The governor of the state should recognize those who work for the party and make the party to be successful. It is one thing to be victorious at the court level and another thing to carry the people along. I want to use this opportunity to urge the governor to carry the people along.
“This is the fifth time he is setting up a committee to review staff strength with so many screenings every day. People are dying. You ask people to come from the entire 21 local government to Lokoja to present their documents; some of them are dying on road accident.
“My concern is that if he is too sure, he should set up a better frame rather than this recurrent approach. For all the committees that sent report to him, he has condemned their report and he is the one that set up these committees. Now another committee has been set up again for the same purpose.
“We get calls every day for welfare from civil servants, school children that their parents have not been paid for months. So, we want him to stop this because this is not the only way to stop ghost workers and it shouldn’t be the last. I’m not against eradication of ghost workers but it shouldn’t be done to the detriment of the people.”
Faleke said that the delegation was satisfied with the response of the Acting President during the meeting.
“Of course, we are satisfied. It is a work in progress. It is not a fait accompli.”
This was even as a former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdullahi Bello Okene said that the delegation has representatives from across the state.
“Yes of course. You can see among the delegation here are former ministers, former ambassadors, former National Assembly members across the state that are critical stakeholders. The leadership is all here cutting across the entire state.” [myad]
