Nigerian Warship Heads For The Gambia Ahead Of Tomorrow’s Handing Over

Warship

Nigeria’s newest warship, the NNS Unity, is sailing towards The Gambia ahead of possible military intervention over President Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to accept election defeat and step down when his term expires on Thursday.

A Nigerian military source told the BBC the patrol vessel was currently sailing off the coast of Ghana after leaving from the commercial capital, Lagos.

The initial aim is to put on a show of force rather than to launch an attack.

Senegal is preparing ground troops ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

The Gambia’s tiny army is no match for the regional powers. In recent years, President Jammeh has been promoting his loyalists, including army Chief Ousman Badjie, to ranks beyond their competence.

This has further downgraded its military capabilities.

The regional body, ECOWAS, has said that military intervention will be a last resort to bring an end to the political deadlock in The Gambia.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been leading mediation efforts to persuade Mr Jammeh to hand power to former estate agent Adama Barrow, who won the 1st December election. [myad]

The unprecedented and extraordinary amount of foreign interference in the 1st December Presidential Elections, and also in the internal affairs of the Gambia, and the unwarranted hostile atmosphere threatening the sovereignty, peace, security and stability of the country.
The inability of the Supreme Court to convene as a result of the non-appearance of the Judges to hear the election petitions, mainly influenced by foreign powers and their agents, in an effort to thwart the constitutionally mandated process, as captured in an audio recording of the absconded chairman of
the IEC discussing on how plans have been made to ensure the Supreme Court Judges will not sit on time to hear the petitions against the flawed results he published.
The current state of fear and confusion created by some of the political players in the country, which could lead to the breakdown of law and order.
The need to prevent a constitutional crisis and power vacuum pending the determination of the petitions at the Supreme Court and the application for an injunction against swearing in Mr. Adama Barrow or anybody as president of the Islamic Republic of the Gambia, until the Supreme Court decides on the 1st December 2016 Presidential Election results.
Under this state of public emergency, civil liberties are to be fully respected while all citizens and residents in the Gambia are banned from any acts of disobedience to the Laws of the Gambia, incitement to violence and acts intended to disturb public order and peace.

Armed Robbery Suspect Tricks Prison Warden, Escapes At Kogi Court

Prison Controller General

A 29-year-old armed robbery suspect, Lawrence Urih, was said to have tricked an unarmed prison warden who led him to a court in Lokoja, Kogi state and escaped into the bush from the court premises.

According to information, Urih, who is standing trial at Kogi High Court II for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, scaled the walls of the High Court complex and escaped, when an unarmed warden escorted him out to urinate.

The suspect, who is a resident of 1, DC Road, Ole, Delta State, said to be a painter, was escorted out by the warden across a stretch of 50 meters of grassland towards the high court fence to urinate.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Prison Command, Umar Abubakar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), today, Tuesday in Lokoja that Urih escaped when he was brought to the State High Court, Lokoja for the continuation of his trial.

Abubakar said that the accused had been kept in the Medium Security Prisons, Koton-Karfe, from where he was taken to the court in Lokoja on Monday. He said that the prison authorities were immediately notified about the escape by the robbery suspect.

Meanwhile, the prosecuting counsel in the case, Mr. Badama Kadiri, has said that he suspected foul play in the escape of the accused even as he questioned why a trained prisons’ personnel would escort a self-confessed armed robber to urinate unarmed, and without handcuffs.

Kadiri said that he was particularly disturbed that the prison officers did not tell him when the suspect was being taken out, and that he had to apply for adjournment when he did not see the accused in court.

He said that the trial had reached an advanced stage, adding that four, out of his eight witnesses, had testified, while one person was billed to testify on Monday, but for the escape.

In the charges, the accused allegedly conspired with one Aby (surname unknown), and a commercial motorcyclist, whose identity is not known, both at large, to rob one Mr. Williams Aliwo of N500,000 cash at gunpoint.

It further showed that Aliwo, a former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lokoja branch, was robbed at gunpoint in his office on May 9, 2016, at about 12 noon in Lokoja.

Kadiri said that the accused also made away with a Nokia 640XL handset, and one I-Pad.

Luck, however, ran out on him the following day when the complainant’s secretary, Hajarat Alkali, spotted Urih in a banking hall in Lokoja and promptly reported to the Police.

Kadiri told the court that the accused was promptly arrested and charged for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

According to him, the offences were contrary to sections 97(1) and 298(c) of the Penal Code.

The principal witness in the case, Aliwo, the Principal Partner, Cristal Chambers Law firm, Lokoja, expressed shock that the men of the Prisons Service could be “so lackadaisical in handling such dangerous criminals”.

“I wonder why they should get so careless in spite of warnings by the Police and the prosecuting counsel about the likelihood of the accused escaping, if given the chance.” [myad]

Co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls group, Oby Ezekwesili, who had just gone on guided tour of Sambisa Forest, the headquarters of Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state, has said that the capture of Camp Zero does not mean the capture of the entire Sambisa Forest.
She said that what happened was similar to capturing the capital city of a country, saying that Camp Zero was the Capital SPOT of Boko Haram in Sambisa Forest.
According to Ezekwesili, Sambisa Forest is a vast expanse of land that is 18 times the size of Lagos state, Nigeria’s commercial capital, saying that more has to be done to capture the whole forest.
“Dreaded Sambisa is massive. (It is) sixty thousand square kilometers. Eighteen times the size of Lagos State! All of Lagos is 3,345 square km,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Apparently, the Sambisa ‘general area’ as it’s called is some 85% of entire size of Borno State.
“#DataMine:
Dreaded Sambisa is massive.
60, 000 square kilometers.
18 times the size of Lagos State!
All of Lagos is 3,345 square km.#BBOG
— Oby Ezekwesili (@obyezeks) January 16, 2017”
Ezekwesili emphasised the need for the military to intensify the search for the Chibok Schoolgirls still in captivity, adding that the #BringBackOurGirlsNow would continue to demand that the Chibok Schoolgirls should be brought back alive. She emphasised that the search must continue.
“Capture of Camp Zero is significant but not cos of its SIZE. It is SIGNIFICANT because it USED TO BE the STRONGHOLD of the enemy in there.
“So, could our Chibok girls and other abducted citizens still [be] within the vast field of Sambisa other than Camp Zero? Yes. So, NAF searches on.”
Regarding the entire trip, she said “We came. We learned. Now we return. To stand! To demand!! #BringBackOurGirlsNowAndAlive! Thanks everyone at Nigerian Air Force for all we learned.” [myad]

The Battle For Job After Graduation, By Yusuff Olayode Yusuff-Supoto

Job seekerYou are a graduate, and this calls for celebration. In few months, you are going to need a job. Do you not need a well-paid employment? Yes, you need that million Dollar per month job to help recover the money spent in the University. You all swallow this concept whole as students that a well-paid employment is required. Yes, it is.
Good that you have a good grade, and I am happy you are the best product in your department. However, there is a very important question you need to ask yourself before writing an application letter. You importantly should see after answering this question that definitely, you are an irresistible product for an employer. Why not ask yourself, “Am I employable?”
Professor Peter Cappelli, the Director of Wharton’s center for Human Resource, in his article, ‘What Employers Really Want are Workers they do not have to Train’, revealed that employers do not seek graduates without tenable skills, they do not need burdens in work environment. Instead, they desire workers they do not have to train.
Peter said that “when employers are specifically asked about recent graduates, their complaints have nothing to do with academic skills, they often express the same concern older generations have always hard about young people –they are not conscientious enough, they do not listen, they expect too much.”
These have been the complaints received from one employers to another. What then is bringing in complaints? Many things! You should not expect employer to say good about you after discovering that you visibly have not the skills they really desire.
That exactly tells us that employees need in-depth knowledge about certain industrial requirements pertaining to their field, and if they do not, some basic skills are required.
Master The Rules Of English Language
Have you noticed that not quite a few of today’s Graduates finds it hard to communicate? It begins to reflect in their interactions, and soon one ends up not making sense of their speech. One thing has certainly lost it ground, “the use of English”. This is dishearteningly becoming problematic, and sincerely yours graduates of this kind need to reread English textbooks. No one is too old to learn. If you did not understand the use of English in your high school and even in the university, rather than remain redundant for the rest of your life, why not consult an English textbook for mastery. One thing employer appreciate is good communication skills. Learning to usher in the right world any time is a requirement for industrial acceptability. Except you have waiting for you, a job that requires no interview, proficiency in the language you communicate with is important. Begin to learn it now, master its usage, so that it becomes part of you.
Do not misinterpret my advice. I did not opine that you begin to speak Wole Soyinka or Farouk Kperogi’s high level English Language. What I said is that, you should begin learning to speak simple and coherent English. That is ok, and no one will crucify you for speaking simple English understandable to kindergarten pupils. Upon this, begin to communicate with people, so it will not appear a burden when you are called to duty.
Go In Search Of Additional Skills
By additional skills, I did not mean that a graduate of Accounting should start learning Electrical Installations. Additional skills are what you were not thought in Schools, but are relevant to your studies. Many a number of Software exists today. Why not learn them and have edge over your sedative counterparts. Besides, conferences, workshops, and training will boost your potential. Go in search of them.
Do Not Be Jack Of All Trade
Employers seek dynamic job employees, and this, still, does not make them employ jack-of-all-trades. It is better to have specialization than say you can do thousands of things. Jack-of-all-trades does not have a space in industry, but someone with specialization does. Know what you can do and what you cannot, and will not want to do. Develop on what you can do, and eschew what you cannot do.
Perfect Your CV
Your CV should depict your skills. What power will you gain from bombarding your CV with irrelevances? Forget about trying to stand out. And if you have to stand out, lies will not make you. So, craft a simple and relevant CV, and see why you won’t be hired.
Let Google Qualify You With Reliability.
Have you searched yourself before on Google? “Google yourself. What comes up – and how does it make you look?” says James Whatley, social media consultant at Social@Ogilvy.
“Potential employers will do this – so make sure you’ve done it first.” Use Facebook’s new “view as” button (found under the “edit profile” settings) to see how your non-friends can see you – and adjust the privacy settings accordingly.
“Next, set up your LinkedIn profile. It’s a brilliant place for hearing about jobs on the grapevine. Keep adding new training and skills you pick up, so it’s always bang up to date,” adds Whatley.
If you neat your social media page and make sure it speaks volume about your profession, you can get hired through this means. Employees nowadays get jobs via LinkedIn.
Postgraduate Is Not The Option
Please, carefully think before signing up for an exclusive postgraduate course that may be of little or no interest to employers. Don’t see postgraduate studies as a way to bypass the demand of employers. What your employers seek are employable skills. If you do not have those skills, and even additional skills, find a means to acquire them. Postgraduate schools will not inscribe those additional skills into your CV. Instead, kindly go in search of the skills you lacked, and see postgraduates as a second option that employers may require. Who says things will be better in 12 months i.e. after your postgraduate? Next year, you will be competing with a new batch of graduates and those that did not find work this year. Is Postgraduate study the best way to rule over them?
Note: I have not said you should not go for Postgraduate Studies, I only said you should not see it as a way to avoid all those skills employers demand.
