Nigeria Army has indicated that its officers have discovered where the remaining Chibok School girls are being held by their captors, the Boko Haram insurgents, but said that they would not make it public for strategic security reasons.
Speaking to news men today, Thursday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the Acting Director of Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Abuja, Brigadier General Rabe Abubarkar said: “neither the military nor any security agency will give information on the Chibok girls in order not to jeopardize their safety.”
Abubarkar, who assured that the military will do everything to rescue the girls however pointed out that “information on strategy to rescue the will never be disclosed.”
Over 200 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, were abducted from their hostels in April 2014. So far, about 26 of them have regained freedom since last year, while others are still in captivity.
Henceforth, any prostitute, otherwise known as commercial sex worker, arrested in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, would be sent to rehabilitation centre to be trained in skill acquisition. The directive to this effect was given today, Thursday, to the security committee, made up of security agents, by the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello at the meeting of the committee. The Minister emphasised that commercial sex workers would be made to be more useful to themselves and the society by being trained at Rehabilitation Centre in Lugbe, on Airport road. He also warned owners of uncompleted buildings that they would be held responsible for any security breach coming from such buildings if they would not take full control. He regretted that criminals have made vandalisation of street lights, especially those on the outskirts of the city, a booming business, warning that such criminals would be tracked down and be made to face prosecution. Muhammad Bello announced that mobile courts would be strengthened to deal expeditiously and promptly with all cases, adding that the FCT Judiciary has already assigned five Magistrates who are expected to man five mobile courts. According to him, the mobile courts have been brought in for immediate dispensation of justice and appropriate penalties for offenders. [myad]

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the soldiers fighting Boko Haran insurgents in Borno State for the recovery of another Chibok schoolgirl, Rakiya Abubakar, in the Alagarno area of Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
A statement by the special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, quoted the President as saying that the recovery of the girl had raised renewed hope that the other captured girls would be reunited with their families, friends and community.
He commended the military for the diligent investigation which led to the recovery of Rakiya and advised them to continue in the spirit with which they cleared the Sambisa forest of terrorists.
The President assured that his government would continue to do all within its powers to assist the military in locating the rest of the girls and eradicate the menace of terrorism in Nigeria.
Earlier in the day, Acting Director Nigeria Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman announced that the girl, Rakiya Abubkar, holding six month old baby, was discovered during the investigation of arrested suspected Boko Haram terrorists.
The Spokesman said that preliminary investigation showed that Rakiya is the daughter of Abubakar Gali Mulima and Habiba Abubakar of Chibok. She was a student of Senior Secondary School Class 3B (SS 3B), before her abduction along with her colleagues on 14th April 2014 by the Boko Haram terrorists.
The Army spokesman said that the girl is undergoing further medical investigation and would soon be released to the Borno State Government.
It could be recalled that 21 Chibok girls were recently freed by Boko Haram out of the over 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists. [myad]
The Gambia’s President-elect, Adama Barrow has debunked the rumour making the rounds that he has been assassinated, saying he is alive, hale and hearty.
CBN Television, Banjul had earlier reported that he was murdered by unknown assailants who overpowered his security guards, leaving two dead and six others injured from gunshots.
However, a tweet from his official handle, @adama_barrow, said he’s alive and well. “We would like to inform you that the President-elect is alive and well. #Gambia”, it read. His rumoured death is coming few days after he referred to the country’s constitution that a court action taken by supposed outgoing President Yahya Jammeh cannot prevent the winner of the poll from assuming office as mandated by the constitution.
“It should be crystal clear that filing an election petition is the private matter of a loser in an election. It does not prevent mandatory constitutional processes from taking place.
“ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations could only intervene if the two presidents fail to do, with impeccable thoroughness, what the constitution of the republic demands,” Barrow, who vowed to take office on January 19 despite the refusal of Jammeh to give up power, had stated. [myad]
Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly (EKHA), Pastor Kola Oluwawole has said that the Assembly has no plan to impeach the State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.
“However, in carrying out our duties, nowhere and no time in Ekiti state will this present Assembly and the Executive be at loggerheads because we remain indivisible, inseparable and closely bounded, sharing the same umbilical cord with the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Ayodele Fayose. For now and forever, let those behind the Abuja faceless group know that as far as the EKHA and the Ekiti People are concerned; On Fayose We Stand. No Apology.”
The speaker was reacting in a statement today, Wednesday, to a call made by an Abuja group, Coalition for Good Governance and Anti-Corruption, on the National Assembly to invoke the doctrine of necessity to effect the impeachment of the Governor. Pastor Kola Oluwawole said: “if not for their attempt at misleading the public by ascribing to themselves an undeserved importance, the House would not have dignified the faceless group and its sponsors with any response, because they are ostensibly chasing shadows.” Parts of the statement read; “for the avoidance of doubts, the Office of the Governor of Ekiti State as well of those of other governors in the country, is established in Part 2, Section 176 (1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) for a period of four years herein called the term of office while Section 180 (1) listed all the conditions that can make an occupant to cease to hold the office as a Governor. “Also, Section 189 (1) of the same Constitution listed the conditions under which a State governor can be removed through the House of Assembly of such State. Nowhere was it mentioned that the National Assembly has any role to play in the removal of a governor. “Also, nowhere was it stated that some drunkards can gathered after a binge night out and asked for the removal of a sitting and performing governor with executive powers as conferred by section 176 (2) of the constitution, using doctrine of necessity. “Most importantly, the EKHA is saddled with the responsibility of oversight functions, particularly with powers on matters of evidence against any political office holders in Ekiti state inclusive of the Governor as enshrined in section 129 of the Nigerian constitution as amended. “These functions, we have carried out without fear or favour and with so much vigour in the overall interest of the people of Ekiti state. “Therefore, those masquerading as activists in Abuja and calling for the removal of Governor Fayose are nothing but political jesters. “Unfortunately they are speaking from Abuja and not from Ekiti, thus they have no jurisdiction to cry more than the bereaved in the first instance about government and governance in Ekiti State. “Those behind this faceless Abuja group are therefore informed that their agenda is dead on arrival. It is an impossible mission. [myad]
Ninety year old Queen Elizabeth has bounced back today, Wednesday to resume official duties after recovering from a heavy cold that forced her to miss Christmas and New Year Church services.
A spokeswoman said today, Wednesday in London that on resumption, she was recuperating from a heavy cold.
The monarch fell ill before Christmas, and delayed her trip from London to her country estate at Sandringham in eastern England by a day.
The Queen then took the very rare decision not to attend the festive season church services. She has not been seen in public since before she became unwell and Buckingham Palace has said
“On Tuesday, the queen gave a member of her staff, Raymond Wheaton, the insignia of a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, an honour that usually rewards personal service to her or the monarchy.
“The private ceremony took place at Sandringham and no pictures were available,’’ she said.
The spokeswoman added that the queen also sent a personal message of condolence on Tuesday to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan following the New Year’s Eve attack on a nightclub in Istanbul that killed 39 people. [myad]
The Gambia’s army chief, General Ousman Badjie, has reaffirmed his loyalty to embattled President Yahya Jammeh, as the deadline given by the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS for the President to hand over power to the President elect, in the December 1 election, Adama Barrow, gets closer.
“May I please seize this opportunity to renew to your Excellency the assurance of the unflinching loyalty and support of the Gambia Armed Forces,” General Badjie wrote in a letter to Jammeh, published today in a pro-government newspaper.
Jammeh initially accepted his defeat in the Dec. 1 election but a week later reversed his position, vowing to hang onto power despite a wave of regional and international condemnation.
West African regional bloc ECOWAS has placed standby forces on alert in case Jammeh attempts to stay in power after his mandate ends on January 19. Jammeh has called the ECOWAS’ stance “a declaration of war.”
Many Gambians, who have lived through 22 years of Jammeh’s increasingly authoritarian rule, were stunned when the elections commission declared opposition figure Adama Barrow the winner of last month’s election.
Jammeh’s initial acceptance of the result sparked nationwide celebrations.
Badjie declared his allegiance to Barrow soon after the poll results were announced, according to a spokesman for the president-elect. However his position remained unclear following Jammeh’s dramatic about-face.
In an illustration of the growing pressure on Gambian officials as the January 19 deadline looms, Alieu Momarr Njai, the head of the elections commission, fled Gambia on Friday due to fears for his security, family members said.
Last month, Gambian security forces seized control of the commission’s headquarters, which holds the original poll records and told staff, including Njai, to leave.
Over the weekend, Gambian security agents closed three private radio stations, making it harder for the incoming government to communicate with its supporters.
“It is a sign of weakness for any side of the political spectrum to resort to media closures rather than engagement to put one’s position across,” Barrow’s office said on Wednesday in a statement that also called for the release of detainees.
Leaders of ECOWAS member nations have dismissed Jammeh’s move to challenge his election defeat before Gambia’s Supreme Court on January 10 and said that they will attend Barrow’s swearing-in this month. [myad]
Former Ekiti State Governor, Chief Segun Oni, has described Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State as a comedian who will never stop entertaining Nigerians with wild allegations.
Chief Oni, who was reacting to Fayose allegation that he is plotting to engineer the judiciary to impeach him, said that the governor was just raising false alarm, saying that such allegation came from what he called “a mind gripped by fear of the unknown.”
Chief Oni, who is the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that he has the utmost respect for the judiciary and would never indulge in any act to bring the revered institution into ridicule and opprobrium.
Through his media aide, Ayo Akinyemi, Chief Oni said that the purported meeting where he and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, boasted to APC members of intent to enlist the judiciary for the alleged plot only existed in the imagination of Fayose.
“Fayose himself knows that no judiciary can remove him now because he enjoys immunity until the expiration of his tenure on October 15, 2018. He can only be investigated, so what is Fayose talking about?
“Perhaps Fayose is afraid of facing the law after his immunity might have expired next year and that is why he is labouring now to spill the beans in anticipation of his doom. He is a drowning man trying to clutch the last straw and smear anybody.
“In a normal setting, should he (Fayose) have contested for governorship in the first instance? This is a man having corruption cases hanging on his neck and was facing trial in the court.
“This is a man accused of complicity in murder incidents that happened during his first tenure and it is unfortunate that our system allows a character like that to run for the exalted office of governor.
“Now with series of allegations coming out on the way funds meant for purchase of arms were diverted to his campaign as revealed by his man, Dr. Tope Aluko and confirmed by Musiliu Obanikoro in his evidence before the court.” [myad]
