A Journalist declared wanted by the Nigeria military authorities, Ahmed Salkida has said that he did not deserve the treatment he is getting from Nigeria in view of the great personal sacrifices he had made over the years to secure the release of Chibok girls.
“Clearly, my status as a Nigerian journalist who has reported extensively, painstakingly and consistently on the Boko Haram menace in the country since 2006 is an open book known to Nigerians and the international community. Equally, my total allegiance and sacrifice to the Federal Republic of Nigeria is self evident. I have stayed within the creed of professional journalism in my work.”
Salkida, who reacted, in a statement, to the news about his being on the wanted list list of the Nigerian Army, said that as a testimony to the credible and professional values of his access, since May 2015, he had been to Nigeria three times on the invitation of Federal Government agencies.
“I made personal sacrifices for the release of our Chibok daughters,” Salkida said, adding that the Army is aware that he is not in Nigeria presently. “In the coming days I will seek to get a flight to Abuja and avail myself to the Army authorities. Indeed, my return will be hastened if the Military sends me a ticket.” [myad]
President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to political leaders in Guinea Bissau to embrace unity and avoid any act that could plunge the nation into further crisis. Speaking while receiving the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Guinea Bissau, Mr. Modibo Toure, at the State House on Monday, President Buhari decried the lingering political crisis in the West African country. Buhari advised the people to accept responsibility for leadership to stabilize the country, adding that it is only the country’s political leaders, not outsiders that can effectively resolve the political crisis. President Buhari said that Nigeria would welcome increased support from ECOWAS and the United Nations to stabilize the country and prevent breakdown of law and order. He said that Nigeria had a responsibility to the region and the rest of Africa and assured: “we will not shirk on our responsibility, in spite of the hardship confronting us.” The UN representative, Modibbo Toure, had requested Nigeria to use its clout in ECOWAS to break the deadlock in the country. He warned that Guinea Bissau is facing a very grim future if the country continues without a functioning government. [myad0]
No fewer than 1,860,877 Zambians, representing 50.35 of the total votes have returned Mr. Edgar Lungu as the country’s President for a second-term, even as the opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema, has alleged electoral fraud.
According to the official results made public on Monday, Mr. Lungu of the Patriotic Front (PF) secured 50.35% of the votes totaling 1,860,877 votes, while Mr. Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND) received 47.67% of the votes, totaling 1,760,347 votes.
The electoral commission requires the winner to have more than 50% of the votes to avoid a runoff election.
The main opposition party, UPND, however alleged that the electoral commission worked in conjunction with the ruling party to rig the elections in favor of Mr. Lungu. “We have evidence to the effect that the votes for Hakainde Hichilema have been deliberately reduced in collusion with the electoral commission of Zambia,” said Jack Mwiimbu, the UPND’s lawyer. “We have confidence that the constitutional court will rise above the board and declare the results a nullity,” the lawyer added. Meanwhile, the PF has rejected the allegations. These elections were, in a sense, a rerun of last year’s elections as Mr. Lungu took office in January last year after a keenly contested election against Mr. Hichilema. The election was held because the former president, Michael Sata had died in office – the second time that a Zambian president had died in office in the last five years. In that election, Mr. Lungu defeated Mr. Hichilema by fewer than 28,000 votes. In the general elections on Thursday, however, the margin of victory was about 200,000 votes. Mr. Mwiimbu had earlier expressed doubts that the polls would be credible given the fact that the ballot papers, which had always been printed in South Africa, were printed in Dubai. According to Voice of America, Mr. Mwiimbu said that the UPND had “documentary proof” of some Zambians celebrating after the chairman of the Zambia Electoral Commission, Justice Essau Chulu, announced that the Dubai company had won the bidding to print the ballot papers. Election officials have also dismissed the allegations of rigging, saying that the slow publication of the results was due to the fact that the general elections featured votes for the president, parliament, mayors, local councilors and an amendment to the constitution on changes to the bill of rights. Zambia has enjoyed a history of conducting peaceful elections, with its election climate being held up as a model for democracy in Africa. However, these elections have seen both candidates implicated in violence during the campaign. As a result, international observers have urged Zambians to take any discontent with the elections to the courts, rather than taking to the streets. [myad]
Nigerian female sprinter, Blessing Okagbare, has on Monday, qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic 200 metres semi-final after clocking 22.71 seconds. Okagbare won heat 5 on Monday in the 200m 1st round to qualify alongside Cote d’Ivoire duo of Marie-Josee Ta Lou and Murielle Ahoure. As a 19-year-old, Okagbare won a bronze medal in the women’s long jump event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She scored a 100 m/long jump double at the NCAA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship for University of Texas at El Paso, completing an undefeated collegiate streak that year.
She won the Nigerian 100 m title in 2010, running a time of 11.04 seconds, and stated that she was opting out of the long jump in order to save herself for the upcoming African championships. At the African Championships in 2010, she won gold in the long jump again with a distance of 6.62 m while her compatriot Comfort Onyali took silver. Okagbare also won gold in the 100 m distance with a run of 11.03 s flat, while Gabon’s Ruddy Zang Milama and compatriot Oludamola Osayomi won silver and bronze with runs of 11.15 s and 11.22 s respectively. She won her third gold at the end of the championship as part of the Nigerian 4×100 m women’s relay team. The team of Okagbare, Osayomi, Lawretta Ozoh and Agnes Osazuwa set a new championship record with a run of 43.43 s, more than a full second ahead of the silver-winning Cameroonian quartet. In 2011, Okagbare continued to build on her earlier endeavours by establishing herself as a 100 m runner. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, Okagbare placed fifth in the 100 m final with a run of 11.12 second. However she did not make it to the final of the long jump as her best jump of 6.36 m was not enough to get her out of her qualifying group.[8] She concluded her 2011 season by winning three medals at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique. She won silver in the 100 m behind compatriot Oludamola Osayomi with a run of 11.01 s and gold with in the long jump with a jump of 6.5 0m. She was part of the Nigerian quartet that won gold in the 4 × 100 m with a time of 43.34. 2012 was a busy year for Okagbare. She jumped 6.97 m in the long jump in Calabar during the Nigerian championship. She won new continental medals at the 2012 African Championships in Porto Novo. In the 100 m she was beaten to silver by Zang Milama, while in the long jump she claimed gold with a jump of 6.96 m. At London 2012, Okagbare participated in her second Olympic Games. Going into the Olympics she had run a number of fast 100 m races and there was much anticipation and hope of a medal. However the 2012 Olympics were not as successful for Okagbare as her 2008 outing. She established a new personal best of 10.92 s in the 100 m semi-final but placed eighth in the final with a run of 11.01 seconds. 2013 would prove to be a breakthrough year for Okagbare. In April 2013, in Walnut, California, Blessing Okagbare set a personal record in the 200 m with a time of 22.31 s. Then, in July, she improved her personal best in the long jump with successive jumps of 6.98 m at the Athletissima meet in Lausanne, and 7.00 m during the Monaco Herculis meet. On July 27, 2013, at the London Anniversary Games, Okagbare set a new African record of 10.86 s in her 100 m race. She won the final about an hour later, setting a new African record of 10.79, in a race where she beat reigning 100 m Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Okagbare’s record eclipsed the existing record by compatriot Glory Alozie of 10.90 s which had stood since 1998. At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Okagbare won the silver medal in the long jump. Her jump of 6.99 m put her in second place behind Brittney Reese of the United States by only two centimetres.[10] In the 100 m final, she placed sixth with a run of 11.04 s and also placed third in the 200 m race. Okagbare participated in both the 100m and 200m races. She made it through to the finals of the 100m and won with a time of 10.85, breaking the games record of 10.91 seconds set by Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie 12 years earlier at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Okagbare also won the gold medal in the 200, with a time of 22.25 seconds. In doing so, she became the fourth woman to win the 100m and 200m double at the Commonwealth Games. She ran the lead off leg in the 4 x 200 m at the 2015 World Relays. The team consisting of Okagbare, Regina George, Dominique Duncan and Christy Udoh, won the race and set an African Record in the process.[11] She did not appear in the 200 metres at the IAAF World Championships or the All Africa Games due to a hamstring injury she sustained while finishing last in the final of the 100 metres at the World Championships. At the end of the season, she did participate in the IAAF Diamond League meet, the Weltklasse Zürich in Zurich, finishing second in the 100 metres. The Director General of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission Al Hassan Yakmu was angered by the perceived snub: “I was shocked when I saw Okagbare competing in the Diamond League in Zurich last Thursday. I was wondering if it was the same Okagbare who refused to compete for Nigeria in the 200m event at the IAAF World Championship in Beijing. She even opted out of Team Nigeria for the All-Africa Games in Congo. Why? I have said it times without number that any athlete who feels too big to compete for Nigeria in the All-Africa Games should not bother about the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. No athlete is bigger than Nigeria. It was initially reported that Okagbare was banned from representing Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria eventually refuted the claim.Though she opted out of the individual events at the All-Africa Games, she did run in the 4 x 100 m relay and help the Nigerian team (Cecilia Francis, Okagbare, Ngozi Onwumere and Lawretta Ozoh) secure the gold medal. In September 2014, she married Nigerian footballer Igho Otegheri. [myad]

A statement by the special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that late Abuah had a long and rich career at the Presidency, where he served seven past Nigerian leaders since 1986 when he joined the State House media office from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The Saudi Arabian Health ministry has raised concern over the possible outbreak of infection diseases during this year’s pilgrimage in which over a million Muslims, from about 39 countries of the world are participating.
In a statement, the ministry said that it is determined to focus attention on the prevention of such diseases as MERS and Zika in particular, and in general, cerebral spinal fever, meningitis, yellow fever and polio.
The ministry said that it would take necessary measures to educate the incoming pilgrims on personal hygiene such drinking bottled water, washing hands with soap, using disposable shaving razors, abstaining from eating exposed foods and keeping away from scorching sun.
It said that some literatures would be distributed to the pilgrims on precautionary measures they should take to avoid running into health problems.
This is even as the minister for Hajj and Umrah, Muhammad Bantan said that an approved grouping of pilgrims, to avoid over-crowding at any point, has been forwarded to the Crown Prince, Muhammad Bin Naif, who is the chairman of the Supreme Hajj Committee for final endorsement.
According to hm, the first phase of the grouping would involve those going to Jamrah, Masher Train, and that the plan is simply a way of controlling crowed to stem the situation in which thousands of pilgrims died last year at Jamrah area.
Meanwhile, the 45th flight, carrying 463 intending pilgrims from Ogun state, Nigeria, left Lagos at about quarter past six in the morning of Monday for Madinah in Medview flight MEV 3124. Total number of intending pilgrims that have been airlifted from various airports in Nigeria to the Holy land, as at Monday morning, was 19,110. [myad]
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has described the factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as devil and a curse to the party. “The man is of the devil and no-one should believe a word that comes out of his mouth or take him seriously. He is a curse to the PDP and the sooner he is kicked out of the party the better it is for us all.” In a statement, Fani Kayode said that he was happy to have seen Modu Sheriff for who he was and quickly opposed his leadership of the PDP. Fani-Kayode, who was the spokesperson of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation for the 2015 general election, said that Modu Sheriff is a liar who came to destroy the PDP and that if a person like him did not rise up against him (Sheriff) and kick him out when he did, he would have succeeded in his mission. “I am proud to have been the first to see him for what he is and to publicly blow the whistle on him. I was one of those that led the rebellion against him and orchestrated the campaign to push him out and dump him as the National Chairman of our party and many have thanked me for that including some of those that brought him in the first place and attempted to impose him on us. “Lying Ali Modu Sheriff has changed political parties no less than five times in the last few years. Each time he goes to a new party that is not in power at the center he assumes the role of a government mole and spy and tries to destroy it from within on behalf of the government of the day. “That is his modus operandi. On return he gets protection from the state for all the many atrocities he has committed over the years. He has betrayed everyone and every political party he has ever worked with or for. “Go and ask around. We used him to spy on and destroy the APP when Obasanjo was in power and now Buhari is using him to destroy the PDP. “Luckily he has failed because 99 per cent of PDP members have rejected him and now he is on his own. He failed in his evil mission and now he is making noise like a chicken or snake whose head has been cut off. “Unlike him, I am consistent in my views and I am as constant as the northern star. “It is a matter of good breeding. “With me you will always know where you stand and I will always speak my mind no matter whose ox is gored. “He is the opposite. He pretends to be a friend and a loyalist when his real plan is to stab you in the back and kill you on the night. He does not have the courage to be loyal to any cause, any person or any political party. “He is more of a gangster than a politician and everyone knows it. He comes into another man’s house or political party and tries to pull it down by deceit and guile. “He is a vessel of destruction. “That is the man who some misguided people believe can be trusted. He was in APP, then ANPP, then APC and now he is in PDP all in a matter of a few years and everywhere he goes he fights everyone until they get tired of him and push him out. “If anyone wants to talk about ‘changing goal posts’ it should certainly not be him.”
Celebrated Japanese plastic surgeon, Katsuya Takasu, has said that he is in love with Team Nigeria VI that had qualified for semi finals in the ongoing Rio Olympic soccer tournament in Brazil, even as he promised to dole out a bonus of $30,000 to each player should they win gold. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), quoted Takasu as saying: “I am not doing this for media attention but to motivate a team with an indomitable spirit. I fell in love with the Nigerian team because despite all these problems, they are in the quarter-finals of the Olympics. “Whether they win or not, I will still donate something to help alleviate the challenges in paying their bonuses and allowances.” Takasu said that he read about the financial problems affecting the Nigerian team and that he felt the need to make a big contribution. This was even as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed gratitude to Takasu, with the vice-president of the football ruling body, Seyi Akinwunmi saying: “I have been in direct contact with Mr. Takasu and impressed by his gesture.” Akinwunmi told BBC Sport: “but we need not get carried away because the integrity of the country is at stake. First, we must check about this. Significantly, the team has an important game and we need to focus on that.” Meanwhile, the team’s media officer, Timi Ebikagboro has confirmed that the Nigeria Olympic team have now received their camp allowances. “The sports ministry has cleared all camp allowances of the team in Brazil. Players and officials have now been paid 22 days allowances,” said Ebikagboro. [myad]
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group agitating for the Biafran Republic in Nigeria has claimed that it has fanatical followers all over the world. In a statement, the group described itself as a global phenomenon, unprecedented in the history of freedom fighting anywhere on earth. “We are all over the world with fanatical following. IPOB rank and file is with their leader, Nnamdi Kanu and we speak with one voice.” The text of the statement goes thus: We want to categorically state that we and our brothers the Niger Delta Avengers (N.D.A.) are inseparable in our quest for Biafra restoration. Just as N.D.A. stated in their demands which the Nigerian Government is very much aware of but has chosen to ignore, there will be no negotiation if there is no freedom for the leader of IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Nigeria will avert imminent doom only if Buhari is compelled by civilized nations to obey existing court orders and release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. Trying the discredited divide and rule tactics of using the media to claim Nnamdi Kanu denied N.D.A. in order to engineer acrimony and hatred between him and N.D.A. has failed woefully. South South and South East are united in this noble quest for freedom and no amount of media manipulation can alter this fact. Only if Buhari knows who Nnamdi Kanu truly is or the amount of influence he commands among the people of South East and South South he won’t listen to the lies Lawal Daura of DSS and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have been feeding him. Although we acknowledge that our lawyers spoke out of turn in a recent press conference, we are also aware that Mr. Rochas Okorocha who parades himself to the contrary as an Igbo man has been working as a front man for Muhammadu Buhari to penetrate and compromise IPOB governing structure and our lawyers. We are aware of the grand conspiracy orchestrated by Rochas Okorocha to penetrate IPOB by all and any means necessary. We know that one of our lawyers has been meeting with Okorocha clandestinely in the past few weeks just like Buhari through Lawal Daura of DSS has been doing through inducements and threats. Some of our lawyers are currently being investigated by the EFCC at the behest of Daura of DSS over a land case settled years ago, in order to unsettle them sufficiently to turn to DSS informants and ultimately undermine the legal defence of our leader as was the case with Vincent Obetta. In spite of all these shenanigans by Buhari through Daura of DSS and his co-jesters in the media peddling falsehood about negotiations that our leader never consented to, IPOB worldwide is unwavering, determined and resolute under the supreme command of Nnamdi Kanu. No other person dead or alive has the right to command or can command IPOB whether that person is residing in Government house in Owerri or from a private hospital in Nnewi. Only Nnamdi Kanu can tell us in IPOB what to do and we obey. Anybody else attempting to do so will be comprehensively disgraced. IPOB rank and file is with their leader Nnamdi Kanu and we speak with one voice. Our decision remains that there will be NO negotiations with Nigeria until Buhari obeys court orders for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. We would like to remind everyone that whatever statement or information is provided by IPOB either through our spokespersons or live on Radio Biafra broadcast by our Deputy Director is exactly the mind of our leader Nnamdi Kanu because he trained us to always put the needs of Biafra restoration first and never to retreat nor surrender. From the time of the arrest of our leader till date he has never at any time disputed publicly or in private, through his wife or family members any press statement issued by IPOB official spokespersons. Furthermore, IPOB is aware that Buhari is planning to kill our leader Nnamdi Kanu and is doing so with active connivance of some Igbo politicians with certain executive members of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. We warn Buhari and his cohorts that the murder of Nnamdi Kanu will spell doom not just for Nigeria but the entire sub-region because the fall out will be too disastrous for a sane mind to contemplate. Anybody from the government of Nigeria or Ohanaeze Ndigbo that thinks that Nnamdi Kanu can be another Ken Saro-Wiwa or M.K.O. Abiola is digging their own grave. IPOB is a global phenomenon, unprecedented in the history of freedom fighting anywhere on earth. We are all over the world with fanatical following. That IPOB has vowed to maintain a peaceful approach to liberating Biafra from the contraption called Nigeria does not translate to allowing Buhari and his conniving so-called Igbo elites to assassinate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and go scot-free. That will never happen. We would like to state that IPOB is aware of the fact that all over the world terms for self-determination is always negotiated. But what we insist on is that for Buhari to start any negotiation with IPOB on a peaceful exit of Biafra from Nigeria he must first obey court orders on the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. Buhari should also release all Biafrans illegally detained in various prisons in Nigeria. [myad]
The Nigerian Army has declared a Nigerian journalist, Ahmed Salkida (Ambassador), Ahmed U. Bolori and Aisha Wakil wanted in connection to the abducted Chibok girls. A statement by the Acting Director of the Nigerian Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani K. Usman, said that the trio are believed to be in possession of information on the conditions and the exact location of schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, in 2014. The statement said that the action by the Army is based on relevant laws. “We are relying on the relevant laws of the land and in particular, the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 (as amended), where Nigerians could be punished for failure to disclose information about terrorists or terrorist activities. “This becomes necessary as a result of their link with the last two videos released by Boko Haram terrorists and other findings of our preliminary investigations.” The statement said that the Army is certain that the wanted persons have links with Boko Haram terrorists and have contact with them. “They must, therefore, come forward and tell us where the group is keeping the Chibok Girls and other abducted persons to enable us to rescue them.” The Army called on the general public to provide information on the whereabouts of the wanted persons, adding that the Army is working with other security agencies for their arrest if they fail to turn up. Salkida is a notable Nigerian journalist who has remained a credible source of information about Boko Haram activities. He has occasionally acted as a negotiator between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram militants before going on exile. Salkida has remained active from exile providing up to date information and free advice on Boko Haram activities. arlier after members of Boko Haram released a new video showing some of the girls, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the Federal Government is doing everything possible to secure the release of the girls and put an end to the horrible saga of their abduction. In a statement, the minister said that the government is in touch with those purportedly behind the video. “We are on top of the situation. “But we are being extremely careful because the situation has been compounded by the split in the leadership of Boko Haram. “We are also being guided by the need to ensure the safety of the girls. Since this is not the first time we have been contacted over the issue, we want to be doubly sure that those we are in touch with are who they claim to be.” Mohammed expressed the hope that the latest development will signal the beginning of the end of the nightmare to which the girls, their families and indeed all Nigerians have been subjected since the unfortunate abduction.” [myad]
