Governor Ambode Declares Lagos Oil Producing State

Ambode and GMD Oil on discoveryLagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has declared that Lagos has officially joined the League of Oil Producing States in Nigeria following the discovery of crude oil by Tunde Folawiyo Petroleum Company Limited in Badagry, Lagos.

Governor Ambode who made the declaration when the management of the company led by the Group Managing Director, Mr. Tunde Folawiyo paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Ikeja, commended the firm for its doggedness to achieve the feat after 25 years of hard work, saying that by the provision of Section 162 Sub-Section 2 of the Nigeria Constitution, Lagos has become an oil producing State.

“I want to thank you very much for this and I say it with all conviction because I know that based on section 162 Sub-Section 2 of the Nigeria Constitution, Lagos becomes an oil producing state and by virtue of this, the 13 percent derivation that is due to oil producing states, Lagos will start to partake from it by your very good gesture.

“So we officially declare Lagos State as an oil producing state, we also notify the Federal Government by this action that we would be sharing out of the 13 percent derivation. So all we need do is to apply and then we join.”

Governor Ambode said that the feat has not only placed Lagos in the history books as the first state outside the Niger Delta to become an oil producing State, but has also opened up a new page for revenue generation in the State.

“It also means that by the additional revenue that is coming from this action, we would have more resources to provide infrastructure for Lagosians and this is what we want other investors and businessmen to emulate, so that beyond the issue of profit, you are actually creating impact on people without them necessarily knowing that it is actually coming from a venture like this that you have embarked on.”

He said that he resilience of the Tunde Folawiyo Petroleum Company, an indigenous firm has shown the possibilities and opportunities for investors and businessmen willing to commit their resources to boost local production.

“I want to commend what you have done, it’s a sign that you believe so much in Lagos State. I want to congratulate you, I want to showcase you as a very good example of a dogged entrepreneur, as someone who believes in Nigeria because that’s what you epitomize here.

“The Federal Government has always said that we all need to look back inwards and start to do things for ourselves. Spending 25 years to be able to get to this stage and get something productive shows a lot about your belief, tenacity and doggedness and I want to recommend you to every other Nigerian investor that there is still greater hope for Nigeria and with the likes of you, I don’t see any reason why any Nigerian needs to be afraid because you have just shown by this indigenous discovery that anything is possible in Nigeria.

“This discovery is by a 100 per cent indigenous firm and at times like this when we are experiencing dwindling revenue from different areas of our economy; at times like this when foreign exchange is highly turbulent, it gives one great hope that the future prosperity of Nigeria is assured and is secured by transactions like this.”

Governor Ambode said that what the historic discovery means for Lagos is that the three Senatorial Districts, Lagos West, Lagos East and Lagos Central have all combined to open up the economic and investment potentials of the State.

“I will like to let you know that that we have three senatorial zones in Lagos; from the Lagos West axis, we have crude oil coming out of it, from the Lagos East axis, we have the petrochemical refinery factory coming from the Lagos Free Trade Zone by the Dangote Group which will come on board by 2018 and from the Lagos Central axis, it’s the financial district of Nigeria. For Lagos, it’s designed for prosperity and to complement every achievement that is being recorded.

“We are likely to have three Sea Ports in Lagos in another two years; we have the Badagry Deep Sea Port and the Lekki Port and also the Apapa port. So, somehow, in some manner, some things are being put up that seems like a puzzle, but the future prosperity of Lagos is more than well assured and we are happy that we are part of that and this government is heavily committed to complement the efforts of business men like you.

“In supporting endeavours like this, we would do everything to support whatever it is you want us to do to make sure that the arrow head of this particular sector that you have championed will not just go in vain. I can assure you of that.”

Earlier, Mr. Folawiyo said that the discovery of crude oil in Lagos, which has taken over 25 years to achieve, has gone a long way to show the possibilities achievable if Government continues to lend support to indigenous investors and companies.

“At so many points along the way, we could have given up because it was a very rough road, but the point is that only a Nigerian company would have continued to do what we did. The main crux is that we need government and government needs us and where government supports assiduously, it can only be success.”

Folawiyo said that the company has committed about $400 million dollars to achieve the feat, adding that the current status of the oil well has the capacity to produce at least 12,000 barrels per day, with a possibility to increase to 25,000 to 50,000 barrels per day in the nearest future. Folawiyo presented Governor Ambode with a sample of the crude oil discovered by his company in the State, a confirmation of Lagos becoming the first basin out of the Niger Delta to become an oil producing state, which according to him, is by no means a small feat. Ethnic Groups Fight In Cemetery, 3 Die, Dozens Wounded

Fight in cementeryThree people were killed and two dozen were wounded in a mass fight at Moscow’s largest cemetery that was reportedly sparked by rivalry between ethnic groups battling for control of the burial service business.

According to Russian media outlets, about 200 people, some armed with guns and other weapons, took part in the clashes at the vast Khovanskoye cemetery in southwest Moscow and more than 90 people were detained after riot police broke up the brawl.

Moscow’s city health department said three people were killed and 23 were hospitalized, four of whom were seriously injured.

The RIA news agency quoted a cemetery official as saying people from Russia’s North Caucasus regions of Chechnya and Dagestan had attacked migrants from ex-Soviet Uzbekistan and Tajikistan working there, attempting to take over their jobs.

With Russia’s economy battered by Western sanctions and low prices for its oil exports, migrants struggle to find work and ethnic criminal groups add to social tensions, according to Reuters.

Quoting a police source, TASS news agency said ethnic Chechens, Dagestanis, Uzbeks and Tajiks were among those detained.

The police reportedly recovered from the scene a Kalashnikov rifle, 51 empty cartridge cases of varying caliber, knuckles, knives, axes, sticks and metal pieces.

Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry will send to Moscow its top expert in battling organized crime to help investigate the incident, Russian news agencies quoted Russian police spokeswoman Irina Volk as saying.

According to some media outlets, a 22-year-old Tajik man, who effectively lived at the cemetery, died from a gunshot wound in the chest.  A 42-year-old migrant and an unidentified man died after being run over by a vehicle, he said.  There are no other deaths, according to the sources.

Twenty-six people have been hospitalized after the brawl, half of them with firearm injuries, a source inside medical circles told Interfax.

Police have launched a criminal inquiry into the incident on charges of two or more murders by an organized group, illicit trafficking of firearms, and premeditated hooliganism, (Articles 105, 222 and 213 of the Russian Criminal Code, respectively), the source said.

The Tajik Embassy in Moscow on May 14 sent a note to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking for providing information about participation of Tajik nationals in the Saturday’s clashes and taking measures to protect rights and interests of Tajik nationals.

Reuters reports that Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his Twitter account that none of those responsible would go unpunished. [myad]

Poor Performances: Plateau United Sacks Head Coach

Zakari Baraje of Plateau United FCThe management of Plateau United Football Club of Jos has sacked the club’s technical adviser, Zakary Baraje for what the Club said poor performances.

A statement signed by the Media Officer of the club, Albert Dakup, said the decision to sack the coach was as a result of the team’s dwindling performance, adding that  the team’s poor results in the ongoing 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional Football League were unacceptable.
The statement said: “The management noted with concern the recent performance of the team in spite of the club’s determination to make a good impression in the NPFL.
“The club observed a communication gap between the technical adviser with his assistants and the players which is affecting the success of the team.
“Despite the free hand given to Baraje, he has not justified the huge confidence reposed in him by turning around the club’s fortunes.”
NAN recalls that Baraje, who joined Plateau United from Akwa United of Uyo, had handled the Jos-based club twice in the past.
The Plateau United is currently 14th on the league table, with 22 points from 17 matches.

Serena Williams Beats Madison Keys For 4th Italian Title

Serena Williams 2Serena Williams ended a nine-month title drought with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Madison Keys in an all-American Italian Open final Sunday.

Serena recovered from an early scare to claim her fourth title at Foro Italico and third in four years.

In an all American Italy Open final, Madison Keys took the early advantage as she raced into a 3-1 lead.

But Williams showed her superior class and came back to win the first set tiebreaker 7-5.

Keys showed the fighting spirit that has helped her reach arguably her biggest final to date.

But Serena always looked in control in the second set winning 6-3 to clinch the match in one hour and 24 minutes.

Williams’ previous title came in Cincinnati in August – a month before her attempt at a calendar-year Grand Slam ended with a semifinal loss to Roberta Vinci at the U.S. Open.

”It feels great,” Williams said, pointing out that she’s only played four tournaments since Cincinnati.

”So it’s not like I was playing every week. So that’s kind of how I look at it.

“But it feels great to win a title, especially on clay.”

It’s Williams’ fourth title in Rome and it comes exactly a week before the French Open begins.

”I’m feeling pretty fit. So I’m looking forward to it,” said Williams.

She will be attempting to defend her title at Roland Garros.

But won’t have to answer any questions about a potential calendar-year Grand Slam this year.

”I’m going to definitely go in there and feel more calm and (not) feel stress to have to win.”

The world No.1 had previously won the title in 2002, 2013 and 2014 but was keen to acknowledge Keys in a warm embrace at the finish.

Hingis Wins Her Fourth Rome Title

Martina Hingis now has four titles in Rome after she and partner Sania Mirza claimed the women’s doubles.

The Swiss-Indian top seeds claimed an overall deserved victory over the Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

Hingis and Mirza won the first set 6-1 before losing the second 7-5 on the tiebreak.

But a Champions tiebreak followed where the top seeds claimed victory by a 10-3 scoreline.

Hingis had previously won the women’s singles title in 1998 and 2006 and the doubles with Anna Kournikova in 1999. [myad]

The former Borno Governor, who offered the apology today, Sunday, in Jalingo, capital of Taraba state when he spoke to news men, said that “as a well-cultured and astute politician, I would never make any comment that would ridicule the party.”

He made it clear that it is not in his character to join issues with highly respected elders of the party, denying that he ever authorized any of his aides or political associates to react to issues raised by aggrieved elders of the party.

Modu Sheriff said that the aggrieved members of the party reserved the right to complain about issues affecting the party which they considered inimical to the progress of the PDP.

Governor Yahaya Bello Denies ‘Squandering’ N260 Million

Yahaya Bello 5The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has described the report featured by an online news medium that he squandered the sum of N260 million days after he was sworn into office as an abuse of thr right to information even as he said the report is libelous.

Mr. Bello, who reacted through his Chief Press Secretary, Kingsley Fanwo, described the report as “libelous,” but did not deny that the funds were drawn.

In a statement signed by Kingsley Fanwo, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, the governor said medium’s investigation into the spending was a clear abuse of the right to information.

“The use of the word ‘squander,’ as far as I am concerned, is a clear abuse of the right to information. Every dime spent by the governor can be accounted for.”

The governor said that he drew the funds to tackle security challenges in the state which he said was a “hotbed” for criminals for over a decade due to its strategic location.

“It is a public knowledge that Kogi State has been contending with serious security breach for the past ten years. Because of the location of the state as gateway to many states of the federation, the state drifted into a criminal hotbed.”

He said that he took shelter in his private residence for weeks after he assumed office due to the poor state he met Lugard Government House, Lokoja, saying that he used part of the funds to renovate his official residence.

“The award of contract to renovate the Government House was justifiable. Weeks after his inauguration, Governor Yahaya Bello was operating from his home because the Government House wasn’t conducive. The award was to renovate Government House and not his personal house.”

“If you have ever been to the Kogi State Government House in Lokoja, you will appreciate the rot of the architecture. It was not befitting of one of the most historic government houses in Nigeria. In tandem with the present administration’s drive to turn the economy of the state to a private sector driven one, we need to start our charity at home. People must love to come to our Government House to transact businesses.”

Governor Yahaya Bello insisted that he is committed to fighting corruption and enabling transparency in his administration.

“Let me also put on record that Governor Yahaya Bello administration is contractually committed to fighting corruption and enthroning transparency in the polity. These are the terms of his social contract with the Kogi people.” [myad]

Alleged Money Laundry: Oil Magnate, Aluko Auctions His Los Angeles Mansion For $21.5 Million

Kola AlukoA controversial 46 year old Nigerian oil magnate, Kola Aluko, has auctioned his Bel-Air, Los Angeles mansion, for $21.5 Million, even as Nigerian and European authorities have intensified investigations on him regarding a series of money-laundering and fraud-related crimes.

According to Los Angeles Times, Aluko sold the home last week, even when he was at a $3 million loss having bought the sprawling residence in 2012 for $24.5 million.

Aluko was said to have sold the residence in an off-market transaction using a limited-liability company. An off-market sale in real estate refers to a property that is sold without any form of public advertising.

Aluko’s former home- a contemporary-style showplace in the 700 block of Sarbonne Road, Los Angeles, was designed by architect Paul McClean and built in 2011. The property sits on more than an acre, has a gated entrance, a subterranean garage and a 132-square-foot infinity-edge swimming pool among other features.

For a long time, Aluko had been linked as a business associate of Nigeria’s former Petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is also currently under investigation by Nigerian and British authorities for money laundering and embezzlement.

Shortly after she became oil minister in 2010, Alison-Madueke awarded Atlantic Energy- an unknown start-up co-founded by Aluko, a very lucrative contract to fund NNPC’s (the state oil company) operational costs in four lucrative oil blocks in which the NNPC owned a stake.

In return for providing funding to the NNPC, Atlantic Energy was to lift the crude produced from the oil blocks, sell it, and thereafter pay the state-owned oil firm its share of profits. But there is an allegation and considerable proof that Atlantic Energy did not make any upfront funding but lifted crude and that a huge chunk of the proceeds from the sale of the crude oil did not make it to NNPC’s coffers and, by extension, the Nigerian treasury.

An email to Kola Aluko to confirm the sale of his Bel-Air property was not responded to as at the time of this post. [myad]

“Long before now, the Presidency has made adequate arrangements in the 2016 budget to ensure that Nigerians are lifted from poverty and hardship.”

“This will not only assuage the current pains arising from the new fuel pricing regime, but will provide ongoing social safety nets for over 8 million Nigerians this year alone.”

He added that this is beside the jobs that would be created by the infrastructural projects that would be restored and the new ones that would soon be taking off.

“The Buhari presidency is keen to ensure that Nigerians are lifted and that if necessary on an ongoing basis palliatives measures would always been considered to address the conditions of the people.” [pmyad]
