Resign Now, Northern Group Tells Embattled Senator Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki

A group identified as the Northern Ethnic Nationalities Unity Congress (NENUC) has called on the embattled Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki to resign honourably in view of the heavy evidence of corruption that has been made against him.

The group which made the call yesterday insisted that Saraki should resign before he further drags the image and reputation of the office of the Senate President which he presently occupies into the mud.

The convener of the group, Bako Benjamin, said, when he spoke to newsmen, that it is disgusting that the Senate President would rather be seeking court’s protection than going before the anti-graft agency to clear his name of the charges.

“Let the Senate President come to equity with clean hands. Let him defend himself against all the charges levelled against him in the spirit of the new wind of change blowing across the country.”

Benjamin maintained that the anti-corruption war spearheaded by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would be futile if people like the Senate President continue to seek protection from the law courts rather than presenting themselves for the acid test.

He said that the recourse to the court itself is an admission of guilt, saying: “Seeking protection from the law courts is sending a strong signal that he (Saraki) has something to hide.”

The group, he said, has therefore given the Senate President a three-day ultimatum to honourably resign to prevent impeachment proceedings against him for his eventual removal from the exalted office.

NENUC insisted that Saraki’s continued stay in office is “capable of sending wrong signals to the international community and pose a huge question mark on President Buhari’s commitment to ridding the nation of corruption.”

The Convener said that his group will mobilize other well-meaning Nigerians to march on the National Assembly in protest, should the Senate President refuse to honourably resign from office within reasonable time.

It will be recalled that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) had secured a bench warrant for the arrest of the embattled Senate President by the CCB Tribunal over allegations of false declaration of assets dating back to 2003. [myad]

Surrender Now Or Die Later, Nigeria Air Force Chief Warns Boko Haram:

Air Vice Marshal Sadiq

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar has warned the Boko Haram insurgents to surrender or face death from the combined forces of the nation’s military might.

“My message to the insurgents is simple; it is either they give up their insurgency or they are going to face the force.

“We are putting together everything in place and we hope that they will keep to this advice and surrender their arms.”

Abubakar who spoke today while addressing newsmen at the end of 2015 Annual 10-kilometer Walk/Jog exercise organised by the Admin Branch of the Nigerian Air Force, in Abuja, asked the remaining members of Boko Haram to surrender so as to bring war to an end, saying: “if not, the consequences will be terribly unbearable.”

He said that the Nigerian Air Force is working closely with all the forces to achieve the deadline to end insurgency in the North-East, adding: “the deadline has been set and we are going to achieve that deadline.

“It is not only an Air Force war; it is a war that is jointly fought by all the forces.

“Our responsibility is to make it easy for the surface forces to move around to conduct their operation without any hindrance and that is exactly what we have been doing.

“It is a very coordinated operation between the air elements and the land elements and that is why we are beginning to see the result of that coordination.”

The chief of air staff said that the significance of the exercise was to keep the minds and body of officers and men fit and ready to combat insurgency.

“In trying times such as now, you need not only a sound mind but you also need a very sound body.

“Certainly, somebody that has weak body is not likely to do well in the battle, so it is an opportunity for us to remind ourselves that we have very trying times.

“We have challenges and responsibilities as members of the Nigerian Air Force and you cannot do that with only a sound mind, you need a sound body as well.

“We are likely going to introduce additional exercise that will keep our men in good shape so that they are able to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without any difficulties.” [myad]

Burkina Faso Parliamentary Speaker Declares Himself President, Calls Military Coupists Terrorists, Illegal Force That Must Be Dismantled

Burkina Faso Speaker

The Speaker of Burkina Faso’s National Transition Council (CNT, interim parliament) Cherif Moumina Sy today declared himself the interim president of the country.

In a message broadcast on a local radio station, Moumina Sy called for the surrender of the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP) which overthrew the transition government led by interim President Michel Kafando yesterday.

He urged the people to come out in large numbers at the “Place of the Nation” to declare war against these soldiers he considered as “terrorists” and an “illegal force” that must be dismantled.

He also asked the people to block all roads and streets, before starting to march towards Naaba Koom camp, the RSP headquarters.

The operation, he said, was aimed at teaching the putsches a lesson. To achieve this objective, Moumina Sy asked the army boss and other military commanders to play their role.

In a statement issued by the head of the National Council for Democracy (CND) General Gilbert Diendere, the putschists announced the release of Kafando and the ministers.

On Wednesday evening, the RSP soldiers detained the transition President and members of government, before setting up the National Council for Democracy. [myad]

Soldiers Push Boko Haram From, Gwoza, Dissa, Balazala, Dara Jamel: Re-Open Primary School

Soldiers at war with Boko Haram

Nigeria soldiers have successfully taken over some towns and villages from the fighting Boko Haram insurgents, even as they announced the re-opening of a mixed Primary School in Gwoza, in Borno State.

The towns and villages taken over are Dissa, Balazala, Dara Jamel and other battle zones near Banki in Borno state. The army also rescued 23 men, 33 women and 34 children from the terrorists.

Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, in a statement said that the Boko Haram insurgents are now fleeing from Bama and that some of them are disguising as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

He said however that the genuine returnees and other Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are to enjoy education for their children with the reopening, adding that the military in conjunction with other security agencies and other security stakeholders had placed adequate security measures to ensure the pupils and teachers’ safety and security.

Colonel Usman said the reopening of the school is significant as the eradication of western education is part of the aims of Boko Haram in their murderous campaign of terror.

“Gradual restoration of normalcy by troops is therefore indicative of the continuous elimination of the terrorists from Nigerian territory,” the statement added. [myad]

President Buhari: When Public Declaration Of Asset Fell Short, By Chido Onumah

Chido Onuah
Nigerians waited for so long to get the public declaration of assets of President Muhammadu Buhari and when it came two weeks ago via a press statement by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity, it left much to be desired.
If President Buhari made a false start by not declaring his assets publicly the day he was sworn in on May 29, 2015, he double-faulted with his “public” declaration two weeks ago. For a regime that came to power promoting probity and accountability, I think President Buhari and his handlers did a disservice to open government.
The statement by the presidency on the assets of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, as declared to the Code of Conduct Bureau, was long on sophistry and short on details; what it revealed was interesting, what it failed to say essential.
According to Garba Shehu, “Documents submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), show that the retired General has indeed been living an austere and Spartan lifestyle, contrary to what many might expect of a former Head of State of Nigeria and one who has held a number of top government positions, such as governor, Minister of petroleum and the head of the Petroleum Development Trust Fund (PTDF).
“The documents submitted to the CCB, which officials say are still being vetted and will soon be made public, show that prior to being sworn in on May 29, President Buhari had less than N30 million to his name. He also had only one bank account, with the Union Bank. President Buhari had no foreign account, no factory and no enterprises. He also had no registered company and no oil wells. President Buhari declared however that he had shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank and Skye Bank. This is entirely unlike what one might expect from a former head of state of a country like Nigeria.
“The documents also revealed that President Buhari had a total of five homes, and two mud houses in Daura. He had two homes in Kaduna, one each in Kano, Daura and in Abuja. One of the mud houses in Daura was inherited from his late older sister, another from his late father. He borrowed money from the old Barclays Bank to build two of his homes. President Buhari also has two undeveloped plots of land, one in Kano and the other in Port Harcourt. He is still trying to trace the location of the Port Harcourt land.
“In addition to the homes in Daura, he has farms, an orchard and a ranch. The total number of his holdings in the farm includes 270 heads of cattle, 25 sheep, five horses, a variety of birds and a number of economic trees. The documents also showed that the retired General uses a number of cars, two of which he bought from his savings and the others supplied to him by the federal government in his capacity as former Head of State. The rest were donated to him by well-wishers after his jeep was damaged in a Boko Haram bomb attack on his convoy in July 2014.
“As soon as the CCB is through with the process, the documents will be released to the Nigerian public and people can see for themselves,” Garba Shehu’s statement concluded.
I sympathize with Garba Shehu. For a man who promised so much and from whom much is expected President Buahri needed to be painted in the brightest of colours using his “modest” asset declaration. It does appear, however, that Garba Shehu wants his statement to be the end of discussion on this issue even though he says the asset will be made public “as soon as the CCB is through with the process.” And he may have succeeded. Or how else can one explain the hysteria that gripped not just the media, but civil society so-called, that was in the forefront of the quest for the president to honour his campaign promise?
Here are the matters arising from President Buhari’s “public” asset declaration debacle. If the president plans to go the whole nine yards, why tease us? We need to know the president’s liabilities, if any, the source of money, income from property, total value of his assets and those of his wife and children under 18 years, etc.
There is a danger in the Buhari model. As if taking a cue, less than 48 hours after he “publicly” declared his asset, the senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, also “publicly” declared his asset. Sani declared “two wives and six children, a bank balance of N22m, seven houses in Kaduna, Abuja, Niger and Katsina States, several vehicles, two uncompleted office apartments in Kaduna; N5m in shares bought in 2007, 30 books published in Nigeria, the United States and the United Kingdom with royalties; and a community journal titled Peace Magazine.”
Expectedly, the “Teflon Senate President,” Olusola Saraki, will soon make his asset “public” following the example of President Buhari.
It is understandable if President Buhari feels a bit irritated and wants to bully his way out of public asset declaration. But he should remember he brought this upon himself. Nobody forced him to commit, during his campaign, to declare his asset publicly. After all, we have seen distinguished and executive scoundrels across the country who have taken refuge in the law on this issue. It is their prerogative!
Last week, the president told journalists in Accra, Ghana, that he had declared his assets four times since 1975 and challenged journalists to investigate and dig up the records of his various declarations using the requisite law. “I have declared my assets and all that I have four times, and you (the media) have the right to go and demand for my declaration. Instead, I am being harassed,” the President Buhari was quoted as saying.
I hope President Buhari was not expecting Nigerians to clap in adulation for his quadruple asset declarations. The president was only doing what the law required of him as a public officer. If he occupies public office a 1000 times, he has to declare his assets 1000 times.
As a journalist, am more interested in the president invoking the notion of investigative journalism. For the sake of profession and country, this is one challenge the media should take seriously. For example, it would be interesting to see what President Buhari declared at various stages of his public service vis-à-vis his latest declaration and his job and income during the same period.
Of course, the issue is not as simple as President Buhari presented it. That is why this is as much about him as it is about institutions. We know full well that if we invoke all the laws of the country, including the Constitution and the Freedom of Information Act (FoI), the CCB will not act unless it understands the body language of the president.
I don’t think anybody is seeking to “lynch” President Buhari over his asset, but what is worth doing is worth doing well. If am not mistaken, when former President Umaru Yar’Adua declared his asset publicly on June 28, 2007, a month after he was sworn in, he presented his liabilities, the value of all his assets (including household furniture) and those of his wife as well as source of money.
We must appreciate the apprehension of Nigerians. Ours is a nation desirous of real heroes and heroines, one in which existential confidence is perhaps at an all-time low, in part because of the banditry of past rulers. During the reign of General Ibrahim Babangida, the joke was that if the dictator said “good morning” to you, you had to step out to confirm it was really morning. And former President Goodluck Jonathan was forthright enough to tell us that he did not “give a damn” about asset declaration, confirming what many – with apologies to Garba Shehu – expected of him as president of a country like Nigeria: the wholesale looting of the treasury!
