The Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, who made thisknown in an interview today said that the suspension became effective immediately.
Adeniyi named the banks as GT Bank Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc and Diamond Bank Plc and called on relevant stakeholders to take note of the new development.
“The three banks were suspended because they did not discharge their full obligation as partners in the customs revenue collection scheme.
“Unfortunately, they failed to discharge their responsibilities in accordance with the terms of the agreement they signed with Nigeria Customs Service.
“We might not be able to provide you with the details now but we believe that, in the course of our investigations, we will be able to provide more details.
“However, we will continue to work with the banks and relevant stakeholders to ensure speedy resolution of the contending issues and possibly reinstate the affected banks,” Adeniyi said. [myad]
Edo state governor has said that in a civilized country, the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should have by now, cover their faces in shame for the damage they did to Nigeria as a nation. Nigerians, he said, are a very patient and tolerant people, saying that if it were not so, “anybody wearing the tag of PDP ought to feel very unsafe because you are all victims- all of us here.” Speaking to newsmen shortly he had a consultative meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja today, governor Oshiomhole said that the bail out funds that were supposed to be given to states were not there. “That money that has been coming in, PDP never paid that money to the treasury. They shared it; the federal government spent it illegally. You know the constitution. You can’t spend what had not been appropriated. Under PDP, there was no law; they were law onto themselves. So, if a party for 16 years underdeveloped the country, and according to the American officials, they were just confused. The Nigerian former President (Dr. Goodluck Jonathan) didn’t know what the issues were and everybody was frustrated. “Friends of Nigeria were… Mr. Carson who was the Assistant Secretary of State, when we visited him in company of Senator Saraki, then as chairman of the governors’ forum- that was at the eve of president Obama’s first visit to Africa- and we went to complain, ‘why is Nigeria not on the list’. And what he said for me was quite instructive, compared to what he said last week. “Then I was present when he said ‘you know, we who see ourselves not just as friends of Nigeria, we even think that our forefathers were Nigerians (he is a black American, Secretary of State for Africa). He said each time we think there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is time to encourage Nigeria to build on it, you would wake up the following day under President Jonathan to find out that even the tunnel had been removed. Those were the words of Mr. Carson.” Governor Oshiomhole, still on PDP, said people of good conscience have to pity them, adding that Nigeria now has a President who talks with confidence and not a President that was blabbing and was not sure of what the issues were. “He (Buhari) is one that can tell the U.S Senate that ‘look, Nigeria is governed by rule of law. We are not going to do any of those things that is offensive to the culture and tradition of our people. “We have moved away from a President that didn’t seem to know his powers to one that understands that he is a President of the country in the continent. So, what do you expect PDP to say? I always say that the day you see armed robbers clapping, you know that things are going wrong. When you see them frowning, you know that the security agencies are doing their best. “PDP destroyed the country- I mean from the lips of American officials; senior officials of the state department. “They said one minister under PDP cornered as much as $6billion, and the man said even by Washington standard, that is earth-quaking. So, a party that presided over the liquidation of our nation, destroyed all our institutions, converted the Armed Forces commanders to use them as if they were political thugs, converted NTA to a party megaphone, destroyed the SSS, went after opposition as if we were rabbits to be pursued to our holes, compromised even student unions and destroyed everything that you can think of; elevated religion to a state affair; Israel became a place you visit every week; placed Pastors against Mallams, placed North against South, East against West just to retain power; elevate Obas and Obis with dollars and … You guys were reporting dollars that were changing hands; when NNPC was spending much more money than is available to the federation account.” The full transcript of governor Oshiomhole news briefing goes thus:
On his U.S trip with the President Buhari: That was a very wonderful outing. Nigerian Presidents have visited U.S before but I think what is different is the level of engagement and the general attitude and disposition of the U.S government. It is not everyday that you hear from a U.S President right in the Oval Office saying to Nigerian president ‘you are a man of integrity’. And America is confident that any transaction between the American government and the Nigerian government will benefit the Nigerian people. They believe that the stumbling block had been the issue of corruption and now they have found a president they trust by reasons of his pedigree, his disposition and his personal lifestyle. America is convinced that he has all the qualities required to fight and to defeat corruption, and once that is out of the way, then America is ready to stand by Nigeria to do what needs to be done. President Obama was emphatic that given the size of Nigeria and its population- our location within the continent and the role we have played before- helping Nigeria to overcome some of its challenges would be helping the African continent to reposition itself. He recalled with such fond memories the outstanding contributions of the Nigeria Armed Forces in the past and regretted how from a situation in which the Nigerian nation was looked upon for support when other countries were in trouble in the continent it deteriorated to one in which the Nigerian Armed Forces could no longer secure the Nigerian territory. That is how much things deteriorated and he expressed that this is the result of declining values and all of that. So, with President Buhari, everybody in the White House and the state department are all very happy that for once Nigeria has a leader they can engage with.
What would you say to the opposition that is already criticizing this visit, saying it will yield noting? No no no, you have to pity them! We have a president who talks with confidence; not a president that is blabbing and is not sure of what the issues are. He (Buhari) is one that can tell the U.S Senate that ‘look, Nigeria is governed by rule of law. We are not going to do any of those things that is offensive to the culture and tradition of our people. We have moved away from a president that doesn’t seem to know his powers to one that understands that he is a president of the country in the continent. So, what do you expect PDP to say? I always say that the day you see armed robbers clapping, you know that things are going wrong. When you see them frowning, you know that the security agencies are doing their best. PDP destroyed the country- I mean from the lips of American officials; senior officials of the state department. They said one minister under PDP cornered as much as $6billion, and the man said even by Washington standard that is earth-quaking. So, a party that presided over the liquidation of our nation, destroyed all our institutions, converted the Armed Forces commanders to use them as if they were political thugs, converted NTA to a party megaphone, destroyed the SSS, went after opposition as if we were rabbits to be pursued to our holes, compromised even student unions and destroyed everything that you can think of; elevated religion to a state affair; Israel became a place you visit every week; placed pastors against mallams, placed north against south, east against west just to retain power; elevate Obas and Obis with dollars and … You guys were reporting dollars that were changing hands; when NNPC was spending much more money than is available to the federation account. We are a very patient people. If we were not a patient people, anybody wearing the tag of PDP ought to feel very unsafe because you are all victims- all of us here. I spoke about how much Edo State government lost. You were here last week; the bail out that you are talking about. That money that has been coming in PDP, never paid that money to the treasury. They shared it; the federal government spent it illegally. You are journalists, you know, to be watch dog. You are not digital watchdog; you know the constitution. You can’t spent what had not been appropriated. Under PDP there was no law; they were law to themselves. So, if a party for 16 years underdeveloped the country, and according to the American officials, they were just confused. The Nigerian former president didn’t know what the issues were and everybody was frustrated. Friends of Nigeria were… Mr. Carson who was the Assistant Secretary of State, when we visited him in company of Senator Saraki, then as chairman of the governors’ forum- that was at the eve of president Obama’s first visit to Africa- and we went to complain, ‘why is Nigeria not on the list’. And what he said for me was quite instructive compared to what he said last week. Then I was present when he said ‘you know, we who see ourselves not just as friends of Nigeria, we even think that our forefathers were Nigerians (he is a black American, Secretary of State for Africa). He said each time we think there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is time to encourage Nigeria to build on it, you we would wake up the following day under president Jonathan to find out that even the tunnel had been removed. Those were the words of Mr. Carson. Now last week, this same Carson chaired the president’s address at the institute of peace. And he said ‘we now have a man of enormous integrity; one that has shown so much faith in the democratic process; one that refused to be frustrated even in the face of massively rigged elections. He submitted to the judicial process and even when that was compromised he never gave up. America has done its check and we are convinced that this president is the one that Nigeria needs at this time to regain its leadership of the African continent. America now has a partner worthy of relations because they believe that every dollar that America provides to support Nigeria whether in the area of security, in the area of education, or encouraging American investors to invest in Nigeria, there is an enabling environment because what had been destroying the country is corruption. You have so much capital outflow; so, America is ready to stand side by side to support this president to achieve his core objective of fighting corruption, restoring security, creating jobs and redistributing prosperity’. So, if PDP doesn’t condemn it then they are no longer PDP. Don’t forget, people deceiving people has been a way of life for 16 years.
On his visit to the Villa: We went there basically to speak about the issue in the National Assembly. The progressive governors’ forum asked both of us to try and engage the APC caucus in the senate on behalf of the forum. And the while idea is that having had some challenges in the house and these are nothing new to you. You are familiar with the situation that has produced a senate president of APC and a deputy senate president from PDP and of course the fact that many APC Senators were not present when the elections were held and that they now have what they called quota- a technical issue about whether they formed a quorum or not. But whatever position you take, the truth of the matter is that majority of APC Senators were in a location at the invitation of the party waiting for party briefing when elections were held in the senate and that has produced an upset. Now the current effort is to try to see how you would have an all inclusive leadership in the senate; that those who were not present, not because they were sleeping, but because they honored the party’s invitation. By the time they were done, their colleagues have had election in collaboration with PDP senators that were present. So, I feel the position now is ‘look how do you ensure that having elected this two, that the remaining position that are within the discretion of the APC caucus in the Senate are distributed in a way as to give the other group that were shut out of the process a sense of belonging’. We are convinced that a winner take all in this case won’t work and building peace is making concession and power works better when it acknowledges that even the person who is powerless has a right to exist. My brother and I spent some time with the senators last night and we had what I think was a useful conversation. We have come today to report to the president what transpired at those meetings and make few suggestions to him and I think for me there is light, as they say, at the end of the tunnel. One thing is clear, we are all APC family, we are all committed to change. We recognise that there are few issues; people may not be comfortable, but we have what it takes to resolve the issues so that in the National Assembly we will have an APC senate caucus that is united, that is ready to support the change agenda as the president is committed to and work along with PDP. Nobody is suggesting that we shouldn’t work with PDP. PDP exists in the house, just as APC had existed in the house under PDP government. So, at some point there has to be a way to engage bipartisan. So, that is basically why we are here. [myad]
The Ebonyi State governor, Engineer Dave Umahia has directed that the July salaries of workers be paid alongside those of June. The directive came barely a day to the commencement of the verification of the state’s civil servants in Abakaliki and other locations in the state. “I will be directing the Deputy Governor (Barrister Kelechi Igwe) who is heading the verification of workers to ensure that July salaries are also added.” The governor who spoke at he the 21st priestly ordination of his Senior Special Adviser on Welfare and Religious Matters, Rev, Father Abraham Nwali at the St. Mathew Catholic Church, Ugwachare in Abakaliki, reiterated his desire not to reduce the salaries of workers and downsize the workforce. “On Thursday, I was at the National Economic Council meeting in Abuja and this issue of salary payments, especially those of local government workers came up. I said to the Governor of the Central Bank what I do I do? A governor in the North said, ‘I have reduced my workforce’ and the other from the South-West said the same. But the CBN governor said there are two things you can do: ‘You either reduce their salaries or reduce the number of the workforce.’ “But I said, here in Ebonyi, we are not going to reduce the workforce and we are not going to reduce salaries of workers.” Explaining that paucity of fund was hindering the payment of the wages of local government workers in the state, the governor restated his government’s determination to take the state to a greater level. He also announced that plans were underway to organize Agric and Teachers summits in the state. According to him, the Agric summit for Rice farmers, would chart a roadmap on how to improve the Agric Sector in line with his administration’s policy of restoring the glory of the state as Nigeria ’s food basket. Governor Umahi also explained that the planned Teachers Summit would aid the revolutionisation of teaching in the state and make the education sector a model for the nation. Stressing that there was no going back on his earlier promise to return some schools to missionaries, the governor directed the Commissioner for Education, Prof. John Eke, to ensure the speedy completion of all arrangements leading to the handover before the next academic session. The governor, who showered praises on Nwali, was companied to the event by his wife, Racheal and members of the state executive council. After the event, he paid a condolence visit to the family of the late, Senator Christopher Nshi in Abakaliki. Recalling that he was aware of the period Nshi took ill and the efforts to save his life. Governor Umahi, said the good thing was that he (Nshi) would be remembered for his contributions to the development of the state and the nation. He prayed that God would grant the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss. The governor also visited the Red Cross Motherless Babies Home in the town where donated cash and presented the children with cakes. He said the visit was his own way of celebrating with the motherless children his birthday which was on Saturday. Governor Umahi thereafter prayed for the children. [myad]
The Presidency has announced state governments will start benefiting from the special intervention fund of between N250B to N300B in a matter of weeks. This is part of a three-pronged financial intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari to assuage workers plight and support the states is now in progress. According a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on media and Publicity, Laolu Akande planning meetings are being currently held between members of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on the one hand, and also between CBN and commercial banks on the other hand, regarding details of the special intervention fund and the debt relief program of the President for the states. Such meetings, the statement added, are reviewing loan profiles of the states, issues around restructuring of existing loans including time span, and reconciling the figures. “Already, it has been agreed that existing state loans be restructured for 20 years, and regarding the bond option, the rates to be applied would be market-based but with a cap to make it affordable. Within weeks from now, the states are expected to start benefiting from this two other parts of the presidential intervention.” The statement recalled that the details of the presidential intervention are in three parts as follows: “The sharing of about $2.1B in fresh allocation between the states and the federal government. The money was sourced from recent LNG proceeds to the federation account, and its release okayed by the president. “A Central Bank-packaged special intervention fund to the tune of about N250B to N300B that will offer financing to the states. This would be a soft loan available to states. “A debt relief program by the Central Bank of Nigeria and Debt Management Office, DMO, which will help states convert their commercial bank loans into bonds, and restructuring such loans by extending their life span thereby reducing the debt-servicing expenditures of the states.” It said that by extending the commercial loans of the states, the third part of the presidential intervention would therefore make available more funds to the state governments which otherwise would have been removed at source by the banks. It said that to offer this option to the states, President Muhammadu Buhari has brought the financial muscle of the federal government to bear on behalf of the states guaranteeing the elongation of the loans. “Besides, the availability of the $2.1B from LNG which has now been shared to the states was made possible because President Buhari set a new fiscal standard and tone that all monies generated should go to the federation accounts. Before that constitutional standard was upheld by the president, LNG dividends were going to other NNPC designated accounts. “None of the three parts of this intervention would have been possible without the creativity and approval of President Buhari. It should be noted that the backlog of the salaries in some of the states went back several months before the president took office. “To date, the states have now drawn from the LNG taxes and dividends totaling $2.1B, besides a second sharing from the federation account-ie the regular monthly allocations-a sum of over N518 Billion last week. “Finally states have been advised during NEC meetings to take certain steps to avoid a similar financial crisis in the future. These include: “Making the payment of salaries, a first-line charge. Do more to increase their internally generated revenue. Clean-up their payroll to eliminate ghost workers. Have a fully-functional Debt Management Offices.” [myad]
President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to correct the neglect of research, science and technology by past governments, insisting that no country can make progress without serious commitment to the development of science and technology. Speaking today after receiving a briefing on the activities of the Ministry of Science and Technology, President Buhari made it clear that his administration will dedicate more resources and energy to the sector. The President said that he will fully encourage the work of the Ministry of Science and Technology because innovations from the various research institutes under its supervision could also impact positively on industrial development and manufacturing in Nigeria. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita had enumerated several challenges hindering its effectiveness, including perennial poor funding and the lack of recognition on the part of successive governments of science and technological innovation as a major driver of economic development. Mrs. Oyo-Ita told the President that the focus of the Ministry had moved from academic research to market-based innovative research aimed at boosting industrialization. She asked for more support and political will from the Federal Government to encourage scientific research, innovation and local manufacturing. Also today, President Buhari received the outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Andrew Pocock and the outgoing Swiss Ambassador, Mr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel. The President thanked both envoys for their efforts to strengthen relations between Nigeria and their respective countries and wished them success in their future assignments. The former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Sir Shridath Ramphal, who is in Nigeria on a visit, also paid a courtesy call on President Buhari. [myad]

Last week, it was reported that Keshi had dragged the NFF to court for “wrongful dismissal and defamation”.
A top source told said “Keshi’s lawyers have demanded for a billion Naira from the NFF as compensation for defaming their client.”
The letter from the Kaduna-based law firm was received by the NFF on Friday.
Keshi was sacked by the NFF on July 5 after the NFF disciplinary committee investigated various allegations against him.
This was four months after the 53-year-old coach signed a new two-year contract after his initial three-year deal with the NFF ran out at last year’s World Cup in Brazil. [myad]
Eight pupils, who were returning from a primary school in Ikot Abia-Enyie in Nsit Atai Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State recently, were reported to have drowned in Atang river. The river is said to have partitioned Ikot Abia-Enyie village into two; with all the facilities in the area – a health centre, a primary and a secondary school, located at the other side of the river. The chairman of the village council, Chief Etop Umanah, who conducted newsmen round the area, said the pupils drowned in the water following the downpour which led to the river overflowing its banks. He said that it was the custom of the village to wait for the pupils and women at the bank of the river during the schools’ closing hours whenever there was a downpour. He said that it was unfortunate that before the men from the village could get to the river to rescue the pupils, the water had already carried them away, adding that their corpses were recovered three days after. He said that in the preceding year, three pupils and a pregnant woman died in the same river, and that as the pupils tried to come back from school, the pregnant woman was trying to make her way back from the health centre. “This village, Abia-Enyie, lost eight children to Atang River this year as they were returning from school following a downpour which aided the river to overflow its bank. Last year, we lost three pupils and a pregnant woman in the same manner. “The village is one village; it is split by this river. All the facilities of this village – a health centre, a primary and a secondary school – are all sited at the other side of the river. We cannot stop the children from going to school,” he said. The state commissioner for Rural Development, Mr. Ekong Sampson, told journalists that the Akwa Ibom State Government is ready to end not only the pupils’ death, but all the deaths associated with Atang River. Sampson assured the people that the government would embark on remedial measures to end the carnage before work on the bridge would start. [myad]
Nigeria Army has described as a lie, comments credited to Borno State Deputy Governor, Zannah Mustapha, in the media that five Local Government Areas in Borno and Yobe states were still under the control of Boko Haram. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, who spoke to journalists in Abuja at the weekend said that troops of the Nigerian Army have liberated Dikwa Local Government area of Borno state and its neighbouring villages, which he said was one of the strongholds of Boko Haram terrorists. During the encounter, he said, 20 terrorists were killed while several others were injured. The Army Spokesman, who gave further details on the operation, said: “The troops recovered five vehicles heavily laden with Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) about to be unleashed, four motorcycles, one Toyota Hilux mounted with Anti-Aircraft Guns, one Anti-Aircraft Gun and one General Purpose Machine Gun.” The Army Spokesman said: “The attention of Nigerian Army has been drawn to a publication in ThisDay Newspaper of Saturday 25th July 2015 quoting Borno State Deputy Governor saying that some LGAs in Borno and Yobe states were still under Boko Haram terrorists. “The Army wishes to acknowledge that Boko Haram terrorists have been occupying some portions of Gamboru Ngala, Kala Balge, Guzamala and Dikwa LGAs of Borno State. In Yobe State Gujba LGA HQ had long been deserted. “However, due to recent concerted efforts, roads and towns hitherto being held by Boko Haram terrorists and laced with mines such as Biu-Buni Yadi-Damaturu and Biu-Sabon Gari-Damboa roads were liberated and cleared of mines and made safe for public usage. “Additionally, with the support of Nigerian Air Force, I am glad to inform you that our gallants troops yesterday liberated Dikwa LGA. During the battle, troops of 7 Division Nigerian Army destroyed one of the terrorists’ camp at Faljari village along Dikwa-Maiduguri road, Borno State. “There is no doubt that the village has been the terrorists logistics base. The Nigerian Army wishes to state further that it would not rest on its oars until all portions of Nigerian soil is reclaimed and made safe from the terrorists.” [myad]
