Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, has said that Boko Haram cannot kill him as per the threat by leader of the sect, Shekau, saying that he remained protected against any evil attack and nothing is going to happen to him except the will of Allah, the Creator.
“I am protected and nothing is going to happen to me”, Emir Sanusi said.
The Emir who spoke yesterday at a special prayer he presided over at the Kano central Mosque said that it is unacceptable for people to abandon their daily dealings or desert their places of worship because of the fear created by evil doers.
He advised the law abiding people in the state not to succumb to fear but to be their brothers’ keepers even as he reiterated his earlier call for the general public to protect themselves against the attacks of Boko Haram fanatical sect.
Commenting on Shekau’s position in attacking religious groups, Muhammad Sanuis II, urged all Muslim faithful and the followers of Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya and Izala religious movements to be vigilant and continue to guard themselves and rise against insurgent attacks. [myad]

One of the 54 soldiers sentenced to death by a Nigerian Army court martial for mutiny and conspiracy to commit mutiny has bemoaned his fate, saying that those that were sentenced to death asked for weapons to fight Boko Haram but now ended with death sentence. The soldier who calls himself on his facebook page yesterday as Fahat Fahat, emphasised that all the soldiers asked for were better weapons. “Hello ladies and gentlemen. I am soldier and I am sentence to death by the Nigeria army (be)cause we did not go to fight Boko Haram without equipment. We ask for weapon instead dem gave death sentence.” Fahat’s facebook wall showed different pictures and posts of an excited soldier. In one post, he said: “I am a commando trooper, Jumper Canta Force Galopa Amphibios. Above I am a gorilla, the king of the jungle. I am trained to kill the wicked. I am proud to be a killer. We do good things to good people and bad things to bad people. One man one bullet, sometimes, one man, one magazine.” But the tone of his messages seemed to change from October 2014. In a cryptic message on November 24, 2014, Fahal posted in caps: “I am sick and tayerd with dis forking alpha romeo mike yankee seriousely.” Meaning: I am sick and tired of this f****** Army seriously. Another soldier, Fredrick Ayonronmi, who is Fahat’s friend but not one of the convicted soldiers, also took to Facebook to express happiness after an operation. “Lord, thank you for my life, because I am a survivor of Boko Haram attack in Vimtim Forest. After five days in the bush, Lord I praise you.”

However, the command’s spokesman, DSP Mohammed Haruna admitted in a statement that the command, on the 20/12/2014 at about 08:30am intercepted the Trailer following Intelligence report that a Trailer IVECO with registration number XE-784-ABJ was conveying a Container loaded with empty plastic Ballot boxes, property of Independent National electoral commission (INEC) to its North East office in Gombe State. That the trailer was intercepted by Police men on tactical operations point attached to Darazo Division. He then went on to say: “attention of Bauchi Police Command had been drawn to an unsubstantiated rumour in the Social media that a Lorry conveying Electoral materials was intercepted this morning by security personnel and that it contains presidential ballot papers all voted in favour of PDP.Such rumour was not only misleading but a figment of the imagination of mischief makers who want to cause Disharmony among the peace loving Citizens of Bauchi State in particular and the Nation at Large.” The police statement has only confirmed the report that the trailer was loaded with ballot boxes, saying: “The fact in issue is that on the 20/12/2014 at about 08:30hrs,following Intelligence report, a Trailer IVECO with registration number XE-784-ABJ was conveying a Container loaded with Empty plastic Ballot boxes, property of Independent National electoral commission (INEC) to its North East office in Gombe State. Manchester United’s quest for a seventh successive victory in the EPL failed to click today as the Red Devils could only force out a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the Villa Park. A flash of brilliance from Christian Benteke gave the hosts the lead in the 18th minute before Radamel Falcao restored parity in the second half through a nice header. Villa ended the match with 10-men following the controversial sending off of Gabby Agbonlahor but the numerical advantage amounted to nothing for United who could not secure the coveted winning goal and thus settle for a solitary point. In other centers, Charlie Austin became the first QPR player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League since Bradley Allen in Nov. 1993 as he helped his team from two goals down to secure a vital 3-2 win over misfiring West Brom. Also Southampton halted their bad run with a 3-0 victory. Romelu Lukaku helped the Saints take the lead with his 38th minute own goal before Graziano Pelle and Maya Yoshida completed the business of the day with a goal each in the second half. At the Uptown Park, Andy Carol made it three goals in three games as he scored the first goal in West Ham’s 2-0 win over Leicester.
Manchester City today, beat a valiant Crystal Palace team 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium to go level on points with Chelsea at 39 points and on goals difference. The first half was a tight affair and Palace gave as much as they got and created chances through Yannick Bolasie and Mile Jedinak while City struggled to create clear chances with no arrowhead in attack. The closest goal chance happened in the 18th minute when Jedinak got on the end of a cross from Jason Puncheon and Joe Hart had to make a close range save. City ended the first half on top as they sought the opening goal but Palace always had like nine players behind the ball. But two minutes into the second half, the deadlock was broken. Pablo Zabaleta made a good run into the box on a Fernandinho pass and cut back for David Silva’s shot took a deflection off Scott Dann and bounced over Julian Speroni. After that City took complete control with neat passing and 61 minutes into the encounter, Silva got his second off more incisive passing. Alexander Kolorov was allowed space to cross, which Silva gratefully accepted with a nice half volley. Palace were then denied what looked a legitimate goal from a Steven McArthur header as Video replays showed Fernandinho played the midfielder onside with Neil Warnock fuming on the touchline. Frank Lampard replaced Silva to rapturous ovation from the City fans as the midfielder gets up to speed after a lengthy injury period. The match was finally ended as a contest when on a counter attack; Yaya Toure blasted a shot in off the right-hand post. Martin Demichelis almost took off some of the gloss of the win in added time but his clearance missed goal by inches. Now it is up to Chelsea to take up the challenge.
Despite the claim that Nigeria is the biggest economy in Africa, report, published by UK-based Legatum Institute, a research organization that documents annual prosperity indicators around the world, has placed the country far behind smaller nations like Niger, Benin, Mali and Cameroun.
In its annual global prosperity survey released this week, the Institute indicated that Nigeria is not only one of the world’s least prosperous countries in 2014, but also one of Africa’s poorest. The report listed Nigeria as the 125th out of 142 countries surveyed.
Nigeria, therefore, failed to make the list of Africa’s top 10 most prosperous countries, a league dominated by Botswana and South Africa.
Other countries in that bracket, listed from third and below, are Morocco, Namibia, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.
Nigeria fell to 27 in Africa in 2014, nose-diving 22 places from its ranking in 2011, the report said.
In between the top 10 countries and Nigeria are Benin, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Mali, Niger, Cameroon, Egypt, Tanzania, Malawi, Djibouti, Mozambique, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo Republic, Zimbabwe, and Mauritania.
“The 2014 Prosperity Index provides a lens through which to view a comprehensive assessment of national success. The Index measures the broad set of indicators that tell us not only how nations perform economically but in vital areas of education, health, freedom, opportunity, social capital,” said Executive Director of Legatum Institute, Sain Hansen.
Other indicators measured by the institute are, governance and safety and security.
For each of the indices assessed, Nigeria performed woefully, highlighting how life in Nigeria is perhaps among the harshest in the world despite the country’s oil and mineral wealth.
Nigeria’s best ranking was in the economy group, where it was ranked 97th out of 142 countries in the survey.
Elsewhere, Nigeria ranked 114th, 130th, 123th, 132th, 137th, 106th, and 108th in entrepreneurship and opportunity, governance, education, health, safety and security, personal freedom and social capital respectively.
The leading African country, Botswana, ranked 75th globally, and has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $15,147. The country is among the biggest proportional spender in the world as its government spends 8 percent of its GDP on Education.
The least ranked country in the survey is Central African Republic, barely unexpected as the country has be ravaged by internal ethno-religious conflict in the past few years.
Norway is ranked as the most prosperous country in the world followed by Switzerland.
Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ima Niboro, vowed to turn the furtune of the organisation around within the shortest time possible, even as he has, within 10 months of his being in the saddle, changed the face of the organisation and its ways of doing business. Niboro has not only renovated NAN’s New York Office in the United States, but also embarked on a similar upgrading exercise at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. Speaking with a delegation of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) in his office in Abuja, Niboro said: “by the time I am through with this project, we’ll have a befitting working environment and will be in a position to host anybody from anywhere in the world.” Niboro spoke about efforts being made to move NAN along with the times by digitalising its operations, adding that this. would reduce operational cost and enhance efficiency. He said that it would also result in more affordable subscription fees. “We are targeting millions of subscribers. “Already, you can subscribe to daily NAN news through sms. By the time we finish what we are doing, people would be free to subscribe for only the news they need. You can even subscribe for a day and pay online for a day.” A journalist himself and immediate past Special Assistant on Media to President Goodluck Jonathan, Niboro spoke of his desire for NAN to generate more revenue, which explains why his administration is working hard to broaden the agency’s streams of income. This, he said, informed the introduction of NAN Bulletin, an all-gloss monthly magazine edited by industry veteran, Obiora Chukwumba, a Deputy Director at NAN. A fully commercial venture, NAN Bulletin sells for N500 a copy and competes for advertisements with private publications. Its third edition is presently on sale. Niboro promised that NAN would remain objective in its reports, even though it is a government agency. He commended GOCOP for its efforts to sanitise online publishing in the country and stressed the need for journalists to report issues objectively in the national interest. Speaking earlier, GOCOP’s General Secretary, Dotun Oladipo, explained the aims and objectives of the Guild, even as he expressed the Guild’s readiness to partner with NAN for the mutual benefit of both organisations.
Presidential Committee of Experts on Inter-Professional Relationship in the Public Health Sector has come up with a damning revelation that there are no fewer than 50 areas of conflict amongst the various professionals in the sector. The areas of conflict are mainly in organizational management, leadership and team work, remuneration and motivation, career management, capacity building, professional practice, labour, legal and governance issues. Submitting the report to President Goodluck Jonathan today at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, chairman of the committee and former Head of Service, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, said that the committee received memoranda from, and interacted with about 40 professional bodies in the Public Health Sector and members of the public during its work. Alhaji Yayale said that the committee made far-reaching recommendations to resolve conflicts in the sector which President Jonathan vowed to implement to end what he called “unhealthy rivalries” among healthcare professionals. The President made it clear that government will review the report immediately with a view to issuing a white paper on it and begin the implementation of its accepted recommendations early next year. “I had to set up the committee because I am very sad, and I know most Nigerians feel very sad that strikes and unhealthy rivalries among professionals in the health sector have adversely affected medical services,.” President Jonathan said that he is optimistic that the implementation of the committee’s accepted recommendations will help to end unhealthy rivalries and incessant strikes in the public health sector, which, he said, had unfortunately created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the sector, leaving many people with fewer options for quality medical services.
