The Crime Of Being In Opposition In Nigeria, By Yusuf Gowon

Late. Chief Obafemi Awolowo
Late. Chief Obafemi Awolowo

It is becoming increasingly clear that political leaders in post independent African States, especially in Nigeria, are becoming intolerance of any form of opposition. As a matter of fact, one of the greatest threats to the so-called leaders is considered to be opposition.
That is to say that those who genuinely criticize some bad policies of government are usually intimidated, harassed, victimized, assassinated or arrested and clamped in detention without trials. Generally, the rights of the individual citizens are flagrantly abused.
It is obvious from the behaviour of our political leaders that they do not respect the rules of the game, much less, respect for one another, especially from across different political platforms.
This might account for why they do not weigh the gravity or the pernicious effects of the foul languages they often use against one another: from the opposition to the leaders and vice versa.
For instance, a serving governor in the Northern part of the country was recently quoted as telling his supporters to crush and kill the opposition wherever they are, describing such opposition as cockroaches.
Such kind of statement usually over-heat the polity and threaten the stability of the country.
This is even as the quest for power at all costs has thrown up what one would like to call touts and thugs (Area Boys) in the corridors of power. They hijacked political processe and weild enormous political power. They do things with impunity, disregarding constitutional provisions, and by implication, they become dictatorial or autocratic.
For them, politics is a do-or-die affair. Little wonder, we are faced with leadership problem of bad governance and corruption because they are totally disoriented and dislocated.
Indeed, most of our leaders are interested in the protection of their interests and those of their sycophants who flatter them most of the time, even when they are obviously disconnected from the masses that elected them to positions of authority and responsibility.
It therefore, does not matter whether a military dictator or autocratic civilian succeeds itself in a kangaroo election organized by itself or electoral umpire under its authority as long as power is captured and used to control the affairs of the country. This as well explains the chorusing of their praises by the sycophants even in the face of evidently bad governance. They have thus turned some of us to praise singers and a mimic people due to the parochial nature of the society.
And because they lack confidence, political ideology and self respect, they cannot develop any sense of direction, efficacy and so even with the best of intention, they are forever confused and perfunctory. Our leaders, it bare repeating, have virtually reduced the rest of us to political tools with empowerment programmes that have little or no meaningful impacts on our collective aspirations and societal well-being.
And this is very dangerous for the development of the State since small men (tiny minority) cannot bring great things to the entire soceity. As a matter of urgency and for the avoidance of impending revolution or the “time-bomb” that is about to explodes on a full scale, leaders at all levels of government must heed the advice of John Stuart Mill when he opined that: “the worth of a State in the long run is the worth of individuals composing it…a state which dwarfs its men in order that they may be more docile in its hands, even for beneficial purpose, will find that with small men no great thing can be accomplished.”
For the youths who are most vulnerable in the political madness especially in campaign period, the way for them to be liberated from exploitation, oppression, domination and political manipu- lation, if actually they want to attain greater heights as leaders of today and tomorrow, is to demand for scholarship from their leaders in order to acquire education. Indeed, they need to acquire quality education, because, for sure, education is the best legacy a leader should bequeath to the younger ones. With education, the youths can conquer and rule the world.
As for political gladiators who never want to relinquish power but to perpetuate and dominate forever, they should know that all facets of human endeavor and the world in which they live are watching. They should know for sure that nothing is constant in life except change itself.
They should apply some brakes in the practice of Politics of a winner-takes-all or political vendetta and political victimization in the interest of peace and development of the country.
Winner(s) in any contest should be magnanimous in victory while loser(s) should equally learn to accept defeat.
Having said that, it is important to sound a note that all hands should be on deck to ensure a violence-free election in 2015 that is just aroung the corner, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alone cannot accomplish the task.

Former PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur
Former PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur

The National Working Committee of  ruling Peoples Democratic, (PDP) has suspended Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, former National Chairman of the party  and Abuba Gurin for anti party activities which bother on their taking the incumbent national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, to court without exhausting the party’s internal mechanism for resolving crisis.

They are suspended for one month and their case referred to the party’s disciplinary committee for further action.
In a statement today by the National Legal Adviser of the party, Victor Kwom, it said that the decision to suspend Tukur was taken at its 395th meeting held Wednesday December 3, 2014, which reviewed recent national developments as they affect the party.
According to the statement, among others, the NWC deliberated on the court case instituted against the National Chairman of the Party, Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu by the former National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur.
PDP National Legal Adviser said: “The NWC reasoned that for instituting a claim and counter claim in suit No. FHC/ABJ /821/2014; Gurin vs PDP & 3 others without first exploring and exhausting the party’s internal mechanism of redress and for attempting to stop the forthcoming National Convention to nominate the party’s presidential candidate as well as regularize the position of the National Chairman and other members of the National Working Committee is unacceptable.
“In view of this, the statement, said, “the NWC hereby suspends Dr. Bamanga Tukur and Aliyu Abuba Gurin for one month and refers them to the National Disciplinary Committee forinfringing on section 58(1)(a)( b)( h)( l) of the PDP Constitution 2012 as amended)”

Why Boko Haram Thrives In Nigeria, General Buhari Reveals

General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd)
General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd)

Former Nigeria military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has said that Boko Haram insurgency has thrived and assumed intolerably dangerous dimension in the last four years because President Goodluck Jonathan’s regime has chosen to play devious politics with a national calamity.
He recalled that the same known founders of the dreaded insurgency group have become the confidantes of the President, saying that on September 9, 2014, in Djamena, Chad, Nigeria’s president, Chadian President and one of these elements were photographed in a meeting together.
In a statement by his media man, Engineer Rotimi Fashakin, reacting to what he called Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) “diatribes,” General Buhari said that he was disheartened by the grotesque characterization of his personality by PDP.
Buhari recalled that at the time President Jonathan was winning and dinning with suspected sponsors of Boko Haram, the opposition All progressives congress (APC), through the spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said inter-alia:
“This action by President Jonathan confirms what the APC has always believed: That the President either knows more than he is willing to admit on the issue of those who are behind the Boko Haram insurgency or he is willing to sacrifice the battle against terrorism on the altar of political expediency.”
According to Buhari, whilst Nigerian villages, schools and markets were easily overrun with maniacal fury by the insurgent group because of inadequate security, this same individual enjoyed very large armada of security men provided by the government of Dr. Good luck Jonathan.
The General said that he was horrified by the bare-faced falsehood, insidious fallacy and scurrilous untruth contained in the press statement of the ruling party, just for the purpose of cheap political agenda “bearing similarities with the despicable Emperor Nero who was fiddling while Rome burned.”
The APC Presidential aspirant repeated that under his presidency, Insurgency shall not only be exterminated but Nigerians shall experience security in all ramifications as envisaged by the drafters of the Nation’s constitution in section “The reason is that the same patriotic zest and zero-tolerance for indiscipline and organized crime are still resident in the persona of the amiable elder-statesman.”
He said that besides showing undisguised patriotic love for Nigeria in his glorious career in the Nigerian military, I have always shown statesman-like interventions at critical times in the nation’s current democratic order.
On 14th January, 2010, whilst a tiny cabal tried to hold the entire Nation to ransom, thus preventing the VP Good-luck Jonathan from assuming the role of Acting President, I led a delegation of patriotic Nigerians to the Senate, with a passionate plea to the upper Legislative chamber to do the needful for the continuity of governance in the country.
“The subsequent invocation of doctrine of necessity by the senate saw Dr. Goodluck Jonathan being sworn in as acting President of Nigeria with full executive powers!
“On 8th May, 2014, after the abduction of over two hundred and seventy school girls in Chibok, Borno state and, as part of rallying the citizenry towards cooperation with the Federal government in the fight against Insurgency, I wrote inter-alia:
“Let these people know that the entire civilised world is united against their terrorist act. We are grateful to the world for standing by Nigeria at this trying time. We hope and pray that the young ladies will be reunited with their respective families in the days to come.
“Now is not the time to play politics. Now is also not the time to trade blames and amplify our ideological differences. The unity of Nigeria is not negotiable and nothing should divide us as a people.”
General Buhari said that PDP leaders are awfully wrong in believing that their blinkered view of the Nation’s affairs, due to the affliction of selective amnesia, can detract from the determination of Nigerians to use their votes to effect the desired change in the leadership of the Nation in February, 2015. “Indeed, Nigerians are angry and cannot be swayed by the mendacious narrative of the apparatchiks of a sinking ruling party.
“At 71, I still irrevocably committed to the wholesome well-being of Nigerian people in livable environment under a secure Nation space.”

Jonathan Assures Nigerians Of Stabilizing Domenstic Economy Despite Drop In Oil Price

goodluck-jonathanPresident Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians and foreign investors that the Nigerian economy will remain stable despite the drop in global oil prices.
President Jonathan gave the assurance today when a delegation of multinational industrial giant, General Electric (GE), led by its Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. John Rice, paid him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa.
The President said that the federal government will do everything possible to maintain domestic economic stability, even as he called on the company to maintain its confidence in the country.
“We promise our people that even with the drop in oil prices, the economy will be stable.
“I urge you to maintain the confidence you have in this country before the oil price drop, and even expect better management from us.
“Sometimes, it is when you are challenged that you do better than when everything looks good.
“So, I assure you, other investors in this country and all Nigerians that the government will do everything necessary to stabilise the economy and that the drop in the price of crude oil will not create so much distortion in our economy.”
President Jonathan thanked GE for its commitment to increase its investment in Nigeria with the attendant benefit of job creation for many more Nigerians. He welcomed GE’s plans to set up a facility in Calabar to manufacture components for the oil and gas sectors.
Mr. Rice said that GE has committed about $30 million to the development of the Calabar Plant and is already undertaking the training abroad of some Nigerians who will work there.
He expressed his company’s appreciation of the support and encouragement being extended by the federal government to foreign investors and assured the President that fluctuations in global oil prices will not affect the commitment of GE to the country.

I’ve Reconciled With Obasanjo, Atiku Tells Catholic Bishops

atiku and objA Presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar has declared that he has fully reconciled with his former boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
This was even as he identified waste, poor management and failure to diversify the economy by the current administration as the reason for the adverse economic impact of the fall in oil price.
Atiku who held an interactive session with the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria Conference (CBNC) today said that there is no animosity left in the relationship with his former boss and that bygones are bygones.
Atiku made the declaration in reaction to the anxiety expressed by the Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, Archbishop of Owerri and his counterpart from Calabar, the Most Reverend Joseph Ekuwem. Both Clergymen expressed disappointment at the celebrated face-off between these two men when they were in power as President and Vice President between 1999-2003.
Dr. Obinna said that in 1999, both Obasanjo and Atiku started well to the admiration and high expectation of Nigerians, only for the people to be disappointed when rift and ill-will developed between them thereby derailing the progress of the nation. Dr. Obinna lamented that the political elite has failed the nation tracing today’s problem of insecurity and corruption to the failure of the political elite.
He asked the former Vice President to assure the nation’s Catholics that the rift is over and that such would not occur again.
Describing the Turaki Adamawa as an open-minded individual, the Archbishop of Owerri said he is impressed by Atiku’s interest and commitment to national unity and fairness.
Responding to the concerns of the Clergy men on the insurgency ravaging the country, and the accompanying insecurity, the APC presidential front-runner told the CNBC led by the Most Reverend (Dr.) Ignatius Kaigama that it is the duty of the political and military leadership to crush insurgency whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head.
Atiku reminded the Bishops that when he was in government with Obasanjo as President, an insurgent group, known then as Nigerian Taliban started problem in the North east but was crushed within three weeks. The APC presidential aspirant revealed that the Obasanjo administration in which he was the deputy, moved so fast to uproot the insurgents that many Nigerians till today do not even remember there was an insurgency.
He advised the leader to mobilize resources to provide socio-economic opportunities and an enabling environment to keep youths and the able-bodied productively engaged while the military should be trained and re-trained to make them efficient.
Speaking on the state of the economy, the leading APC presidential aspirant said that had Nigeria been able to diversify and manage its economy in such a way that it conserved rather than waste its resources in surplus years, the present austerity measure would not have been necessary.
According to the former Vice President, the period of boom and austerity occur in circles in capitalist economies but to minimize the impact and ensure that the citizens do not suffer during the drought years depends on what the leadership did with the years of plenty.
The APC presidential hopeful recalled the years of his Vice Presidency when the administration he served in was moved to create the Sovereign Wealth Fund by the desire to have a fallback position for the nation’s economy. He said the idea behind the Fund is to have a pool where excess resources can be pooled to take care of the years of drought.
Atiku said that it was this problem and the need to streamline the country’s alarming debt profile when he was in power with former President Obasanjo that compelled him to get the World Bank to assign then Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to join his economic team in the Presidency to locate and collate the country’s actual debt for liquidation.
He said the current Minister of Finance worked in his office for nine months and that the effort culminated in the establishment of the Debt Management Office (DMO).
He stated that careful management of resources and diversification of the economy is the responsibility of a committed and focused leadership and urged Nigerians to use the opportunity of the 2015 polls to choose the right person and political party to lead the country.
He identified the issue of indigeneship as a serious impediment to unity among Nigerians.
Atiku said the prevailing situation where young and innocent Nigerians who are born in places other than where their parents come from and who have spent their entire lives in those parts of the country are discriminated against as non- indigenes is not good for the country.
He said everything must be done by political, community and religious leaders to combat the issue of indigeneship and allow Nigerian citizens no matter their ethnic origin to be free in any part of the country they were born or reside.
The Turaki Adamawa told the Bishops that it is unfortunate that a Nigerian would go to the US or some European country to give birth to a child and the later would instantly acquire American citizenship while in Nigeria, indigeneship question dominate our discourse.
He called on religious leaders to preach against this issue and encourage their congregation to love one another and promote national unity. He said the problem of disunity is not insurmountable because everyone listens to religious leaders and tend to trust them.
On the issue of inability to access land for the building of Churches and schools by religious bodies in some parts of the country, the APC presidential aspirant said this problem is due to ignorance which can be solved by good leadership. He said that even in the societies more Islamic than some parts of Nigeria, one would see churches being built for Christian worshippers who are minorities adding that Islam does not encourage discrimination.
Some of the Bishops also raised the problem of school ownership and how they are not allowed access to their schools even when they pay ground rent to the authorities especially in some parts of the North. Atiku said such should not obtain at least not when education has been deregulated. He told the Catholic Bishops that his government would put an end to all such injustice and oppression.
Atiku told the Bishops that he needed to see them and rub minds because of the fact that they constitute a “strong moral voice in our society and that for that reason, our country needs them more than before in view of the problems facing the country, and the need for all and sundry to work together to salvage the nation.”
He said it is important that he presents himself before the clergy so that they can meet him in flesh aside information about him that may be available to them through third parties so that he can discuss his plan with them.
Atiku said the meeting is important to him because of the thorough and painstaking way; the Catholic Church trains its clergy adding that at a difficult time like this when the nation is in dire straits, the Catholic Clergy are important in helping a distressed nation to find the true path.
Atiku lamented to their Lordships that “our country is going through very difficult times, especially general insecurity all over the country, but particularly in the North east and which is spreading but unfortunately poorly managed.”
He told his audience that all religious leaders, Christian and Muslim alike, need to moderate their language when commenting on the present insurgency adding however that the nation expects them (the Clergy); to speak out and help proffer solutions to the insurgency as no one would accuse them of seeking political advantage.
The frontline presidential aspirant further urged the religious leaders to do their best to reverse the present division and polarization of the nation on religious and ethnic lines adding that it would not do the nation any good.
He disclosed that he is a strong believer in the separation of religion and the state.
The APC presidential front-runner took the Bishops on an excursion of his plan for the country if elected President on the ticket of the APC. He discussed in detail his plans in the area of infrastructure provision, economic diversification, education, and security, devolution of powers, anti-corruption war and electoral reform.
In their response, the Bishops thanked the presidential aspirant for finding time from his busy schedule to exchange views with them and intimate the Catholic community in the country of his political ambition.
The Chairman of the session and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, the Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, who is also the Archbishop of Jos described Atiku’s presentation as “Food for thought that sounds presidential.”
They congratulated him on his birthday and wished him many more birthdays and God’s blessing in his quest to lead the country.
The Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, the Archbishop of Owerri caused general laughter when he told the Turaki that he is older than him by a few months. Dr Obinna later led the gathering in solemn prayers for the success of the Turaki’s political ambition and God’s mercy and blessing on the nation.
The Archbishop of Owerri expressed delight on the open-mindedness of the former Vice President adding that they have taken note of his position on national issues. Similarly, the Most Reverend Emmanuel Badejo, Bishop of Uyo thanked the aspirant for what he called “his impressive address,” and drawing attention to the Turaki’s concern for enduring national unity and the emergence of a true Nigerian nation. Atiku later took questions and comments from their Lordships based on his presentation.
Other Catholic Bishops present were the Most Reverend Joseph Ekuwem, Archbishop of Calabar, Augustine Ukwuoma, Bishop of Orlu, Dr Lucius Ugorji, Bishop of Umuahia, John Okoye, Bishop of Awgu, Alfred Martins, Bishop of Lagos and John Niyiring, Bishop of Kano. Also in attendance was the Secretary General of the Secretariat of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Reverend Father Ralph Madu.
