Our Destiny Cannot Be In Hands Of World Bank, Senate President, Akpabio Insists

Godswill Akpabio

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has made it clear that the destiny of Nigeria cannot and should not be tied to the world bank in anyway.
“I believe that our destiny is not in the hands or the fine prints of the World Bank.
“The bank may mean well, and can be of help to us, but they have not worn our shoes and they do not know where it pinches.
“It is our walk not their own, so while they talk the talk, let us walk the walk. We wear the shoes and we know where it pinches.”
Senator Akpabio, who was addressing fellow Senators at the beginning today, October 19, of four-day retreat in Akwa Ibom State, stressed the need for Nigerians to take their destinies in their hands.
“We must take our destiny in our own hands and make the legend of this country as the giant of Africa a reality.
“Let us build this country, and fix it in such a way that those who fled this country like Naomi fled Israel in the time of famine, in one of the stories in the Bible, would hear that the Lord has visited our country again and would run back cap in hand, like Naomi ran back to Israel.”
The Senate President noted that every major national development is based on a road map designed by citizens of the respective countries. “The Frenchmen, Montesquieu and Jean-Jacques Rosseau, were the brains behind the French revolution. “Kim Dae-jung changed the fortunes of South Korea. Lenin transformed Tsarist Russia and turned it into a super power. “These people and more succeeded because they had plans and their countrymen and women followed their plans.
“Let us follow the plan before us. The founding fathers of our nation (Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Owolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello etc.) had and followed a plan of development, and Nigeria, in their days, occupied a place of pride in the comity of nations. “Since then, we have not had the kind of elaborate plan put forward by Mr President (Bola Tinubu) and which targets growth in critical sectors of our economy and seek to remove wastages in our economic cycle.
“Let us provide the launching pad for this audacious plan and acquit ourselves as patriots and worthy representatives of our people.
“Every plan, no matter how lofty and noble, needs to be financed. “That is why we need to be taught public expenditure management, fiscal policy, and tax reforms. “Fortunately, the Renewed Hope plan is strong on the economic side. It proposes a ten percent economic growth, which experts claim are achievable.
“It singles out the digital economy as a quick win for foreign exchange and job creation.
“We should note that Nigeria is the seventh largest internet using country in the world with an estimated number of 104.4 million users.
“Let us remember what the President said, “Our Renewed Hope Action Plan outlines goals for greater economic growth in our cities and rural communities.
“We are committed to an economy of double-digit GDP growth, greater food security and one with a strengthened manufacturing base, as well as an active digital economy where young people will have ample space to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.” Akpabio described the measures as lofty goals which should pull the strings of the nation’s hearts, “and which we need to fully key into, understand, internalize, and market to our constituents.
“With these, we can go back to our Senatorial Districts and proclaim to them that “Things are getting better.”
According to him, the policies of the Federal Government have sometimes been misunderstood by some people, but that they are generally designed for long-term benefits.
“But we know that today’s pain shall lead to tomorrow’s gain. Out of the clouds of despair shall come showers of blessing.
“For example, the stock market is said to have jumped to N1.51 trillion as a consequence of the announcement to unify foreign exchange rates. Tax reforms, experts believe, could yield a N20 trillion tax gap in a nation with a tax-to-GDP ratio of 10.86%.
“There are several other benefits of the renewed hope program and the 8-point agenda of the present administration. “These benefits we must know in the course of this retreat. When we do, gather this knowledge, this retreat will lead to a great leap for our country as we would accelerate legislation to renew the hope of our people.”

Concept Of Nationhood, Patriotism Has Broken Down In Nigeria, Information Minister Regrets

The minister of information and orientation, Mohammed Idris has regretted that the concept of nationhood and patriotism has long broken down in Nigeria and needs reorientation.

He spoke in a media chat today, October 18. Read on:

What new ideas are you bringing to national orientation?

Well, of course, you know, that the belief in the concept of nationhood and patriotism has broken down in this country. This is not in doubt. We’re trying to rebuild that, to reconstruct that, as you say.

Mr. President giving me a match in order to see that Nigerians believe in this country once again, we’re coming up with national discourse on orientation or reorientation. So that Nigerians can believe in their country. You know that people don’t believe even leaders that they themselves have elected. Flags are not flying anymore. You go to government overseas, you don’t even see the symbol of our collective existence, flying even in public buildings.

We’re bringing that about, we are bringing back this concept of discipline that Nigerians should have. Patriotism. Belief in the nationhood that our founding fathers have told us so it is going to be a new Minister of Information and national orientation and national orientation is going to be at the center of it.

*How are you getting this message to the 774 LGAs?*

Well, the national orientation agency has offices in the 774 LGAs. Of course there’s attrition now, not all the people that will man this local government offices are there, but we are rebuilding that.

We are going to put officers of the envoy around all the 774 LGAs and we are coming up with your roadmap that will revamp that sector so that Nigerians can believe in their country once again.

*The Nigerian Press Council suggested registering journalists as a way to sanitize the profession. Are you thinking of that issue?*

Well, that is been looked at, you know that Mr. President believes in press freedom. He believes in the freedom of expression, and he’s not going to gag the press in any way, shape or form. He’s going to work assiduously to ensure that the Nigerian press that has been free is even freer. Yeah.

But like I said all the time. This freedom also comes with enormous responsibility. You can’t just say what is not right, because you’re enjoying press freedom. There’ll be freedom. But is that responsible freedom.

*Welfare for press people in Nigeria. What’s the new things we are expecting?*

It is in the works. I have discussed that with Mr. President. He wants to see me come up with a roadmap for that we are going to work on that and in due course you will get to have definite answers.

*What are you doing about managing the excesses of social media?*

You know that is a very delicate line to toe. While government and Mr. President and all of us in that sector are committed to ensuring that there’s press freedom. That freedom, like I said, comes with responsibility. A lot of things that some of these people the social media are doing is also not very patriotic. Sometimes you say news that is not factual. But I don’t want a situation where it will be seen that government is trying to gag the press. I want that to be underscored. There is no attempt by government to gag the press. We’re going to do whatever it takes that is responsible and also accountable. Responsible journalism is the way to go.

I Left To Pray, Not Walked Out On Senate President, Senator Ndume Explains

The Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) has explained that he left the plenary on Tuesday after he was ruled out, to observe his noon prayer and did not walk out on the Senate President.

“I made a point and the Senate President ruled me out of order, then I left because you know, it was close to 1:30 pm and whatever business we are doing, I normally go to pray.

“The press misinterpreted it and the Senate President misinterpreted it, that I got annoyed and left.

“When I came to the office, they said the Senate was in executive session, that I should come because we said we should have executive session. I said let me go to the executive session briefly because I have already performed ablution and continued to the Mosque.

“That was what happened. I was just trying to guide the Senate President.

“We are all learning, including the Senate President.”

Senator Ndume had, at the plenary, raised a point of order 54, saying it was the responsibility of the Chief Whip to remind and guild Senate on procedure and processes of plenary.

Senator Ndume, through the order, attempted to   draw the attention of the Senate President to matters relating to proceedings of Senate.

“Sir, nobody is too big to learn,” Ndume said.

But the President of the Senate, shortly after listening to Ndume’s point of order  said that the section quoted by Ndume was not the same with the content of order 54 cited and consequently ruled him out of order.

At this point, Senator Ndume  left the plenary and went to his office, as Senate President called for a closed session.

Nigeria Immigration Set To Issue Passport Within 7 Days, Commences Booklet Production

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has made moves to actualise the issuance of passport to Nigerians within seven days after data capturing process, even as it commences twenty four hour production of Passport booklets.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration and Head of the Passport and Other Traveling Document Directorate, Sadat Hassan, made this known in a chat with PRNigeria in Abuja.
DCG Hassan said: “The Controller-General of Immigration, Caroline Wura-ola Adepoju, has not only directed the 24/7 production of booklets including on Saturday and Sunday, she also provides transportation and other incentives to ensure that we meet the demands as well as the instruction of the Hon Minister of Interior.”
She said that so far all outstanding backlog of passports have been cleared, and that only Kwara and Edo States have some backlog because of technical glitches.
The DCGI also announced that with the deployment of technology, passport production has now been centralised through which the Service can assess data of applicants, complaints, and other irregularities that can be easily tackled.
“Before now, we have what is called the e-Passport, NIS is currently moving to the production of a new enhanced one which is engraved with laser technology. Through this, we have a centralised platform to work with since the National Identification Number, NIN, is a requirement for application.”
According to her, the movement to the new platform is now 80 percent complete.
“Interestingly, this process has also been completed in some of our offices in the diaspora including the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America.”
Contrary to a widely held belief that the booklets are produced outside the country by foreigners, DCG Hassan dispelled the rumour insisting that Nigerians’ international passports are produced in the country by Nigerians.
She emphasised that while immigration officers are responsible for the production, a Nigerian firm, IRIS Smart Technologies is the technical partner that handles the supply, installation, and maintenance of the machines.
On alleged corrupt practices of some personnel, Mrs. Hassan said that the Immigration service has in place a mechanism to checkmate and punish erring staff members involved in such malpractices.
“Our boss, CG Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, has warned passport applicants to stop inducing our officers with monies in order to gain undue favour. After all, under the law, there is punishment for both the giver and the taker of bribes.
“Meanwhile, the NIS has anti-corruption and Servicom units where cases of erring officers are handled on a regular basis for investigation and prosecution if necessary.
“We have said it times without number, it is on our website and boldly written at facilities and premises displayed in sensitisation banners in all the passport offices nationwide warning applicants not to give bribes to NIS officers under any guise.”

While applauding the CG as regards the welfare of service personnel and the provision of additional facilities, she said that the new Minister of Interior has proven his exceptional leadership qualities by motivating the service to do more.
“The movement of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to the Ministry of Interior has further enhanced collaboration, harmonisation and synchronisation of data within the shortest times which eases our work. We no longer have to wait for information from other agencies under a different ministry to carry out our statutory mandate.”

Senators Move En-mass To Akwa Ibom, For 4-Day Retreat

All the Senators of the Nigerian 10th Senate will move to Akwa Ibom State tomorrow, October 19, for a four-day retreat.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who spoke to newsmen today, October 18, shortly after an audience with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential villa, Abuja, said that the President needs to be informed that the Senate will not be available in Abuja.
He said that after the four-day retreat in Akwa Ibom, he will personally travel to Angola to attend the international parliamentary union.
“So, before he sees me, it will take probably another nine days. So, I needed to inform him.
“I came to inform the President of the first 10th Assembly retreat which is taking place tomorrow in Akwa Ibom State and also to solicit his support towards ensuring representation at the retreat and he has graciously done that.
“I told him some of the things we are going to discuss – tax reform and ways of ensuring the generation of revenue for him to work for Nigerians.”
On the conflicts in the Senate, Akpabio said that there is no cause for concern, saying that one cannot rule out disagreement in parliamentary interactions.
“We are all working in one accord. There is o problem at all. Even if some people disagree on some of the happenings in the senate, still, it is only the majority decision that is going to prevail.
“Parliament is like that. But we will never get to a point of throwing chairs. “We will never get to that point. The senate is too mature, full of matured people, so, if we have a disagreement, we immediately go into a closed session, resolve it and come out smiling. “We are politicians; no permanent hatred but permanent interest.
“That interest is the interest of the nation: to support the President, support his administration in legislation, oversight functions, to succeed, in order to move the country forward and that is what we have been doing and that is what we are committed to doing.”

Senator Elisha Aboh, Sacked By Court, Begs Akpabio To Forgive Him For Wrong Accusation

Senator Elisha Abbo who was sacked by the Appeal Court on Monday as senator representing Adamawa North has apologized to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio over his earlier claim that Senator Akpabio influenced the judgment against him at the Court of Appeal.
Speaking on Arise News Television on Tuesday night, Senator Abbo denied any plot by him or any other senator to impeach the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Abbo reneged on his earlier claim that Senator Akpabio had plans to kick out Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and three other senators.
“I have to say this with all sense of humility and responsibility that the press release that we rendered yesterday (Monday) was premature as the available information at our disposal then portended.
“We discovered a lot of things yesterday…yesterday night, I also had a discussion with my leader, senior brother, colleague and the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Akpabio and I am convinced that he was not involved in my exit from the Senate.”
Senator Abbo said that he also got a more credible and authenticated intelligence on Tuesday morning to the effect that Senator Akpabio was not involved in kicking him out of the Senate through the Court of Appeal.
“Based on every additional intelligence that trickled in, Senator Godswill Akpabio’s innocence was unarguably without any doubt.”
On reports of attempts in the past to impeach the Senate President, Senator Abbo who was reportedly linked to the alleged plot said:
“I want to say that there was no plan to impeach the Senate President at any time, who himself was a product of the popular votes of confidence by us(his colleagues). I support and respect Senator Godswill Akpabio to deliver on the core mandate of the Nigerian people.
“I am praying for God to give him wisdom because the senate is a chamber of equals and I am praying for wisdom for him to know how to manage his colleagues because I don’t want him to fail.”
Abbo prayed for Akpabio to succeed.
Hon Eseme Eyiboh, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President of the Senate, who was also on the same programme commended Senator Abbo for his apology saying: “what he has done today is a very rare act of strength of character by coming out publicly to apologise to his father and his leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio by the umbrage.
“So, I want to thank him for that demonstration of goodwill and he will go places; and Akpabio for who he is, will not withhold any blessing and affection from him.”

New Hajj Commission Chairman, Jalal Arabi Assumes Duty With “TSA” Mantra

The newly appointed Acting Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Alhaji Jalal Ahmad Arabi has assumed office with what he called TSA Mantra. He explained the Mantra to be “Trust, Sacrifice and Allah knows best.”
Jalal, who took over the rein at the Hajj Commission today, October 18, made it clear that he had come to rigorously persue the vision and mission of the commission with the sole aim of seeing to the interest of the pilgrims.
He said that he regarded his appointment as a call to services, saying that he is fully out to achieve his goal by improving the service rendered to the pilgrims.
“My appointment was a privilege. I am lucky to be called upon to serve the Guests of Allah, knowing fully well that the reward for serving the guest of Allah will be both Here and Hereafter.
“I know, like all establishments, we have our mission, vision and it is being pursued vigorously before now but certainly there is always room for improvement in whatever endeavour. Of course, without prejudice to what we intend to achieve through our vision and mission, I have come with three nouns that will be so cardinal and of course will be laying on the tripod. I call them ‘TSA’ and my definition is entirely different from the TSA you know.
“Let me start with my T – trust. I know most of us, if not all, know the burden of trust and responsibility on any Muslim that is so charged to carry that trust.
“My ‘S’ is sacrifice. Whoever is entrusted with trust knows that he or she makes sacrifice and my A is Allah. Allah knows all.”
Earlier, Alhaji Nura Hassan Yakasai, congratulated Jalal Arabi on his appointment, reminding him that the task ahead are enormous and very challenging.
“We congratulate you for your appointment. The outgoing chairman would have wished to be here but due to some reasons beyond his control, he couldn’t make it. But I believe he will be here in the afternoon or when he will be able to meet you.
“Apart from that, I just want to mention that you are coming in or stepping into the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria at a critical time, at the time when all the preparations for Hajj are supposed to start or have already started and unfortunately, this time around the period or time given by the Saudi authority is different from the traditional ones where we have sufficient time to do whatever we want to do or arrange but unfortunately you have a very short time.
“The assurance I will give is that you have capable staff here that can assist you to succeed and it is our hope and prayers that you succeed.”
He solicited the cooperation of all stakeholders, especially the staff in order to make things better.
“Our train is moving, we need to re-position the commission to be able to perform our job better and we shouldn’t do anything to slow it down.
“We shall try to address some of the complaints that have been made. We therefore need to work as a team.”
He also promised to build a well-disciplined, professional and highly motivated staff, but said they must earn it. “Therefore, I urge you to re-dedicate ourselves to our duties.”
