As Governor, Deputy, Lawmakers Fled Adamawa State, By Yusuf Ozi-Usman

Adamawa State has been shut down. Yes! There is no government right now. The state is, in simple language, without a functional government. It is on its knees!
As a matter of fact, the reality on the ground, as I write this piece now, is that the state governor, Murtala Nyako is not around to govern the state; the state deputy governor, Bala James Ngillari is also not around to hold forth for the governor. There is also no member of the state House of Assembly to carry out the legislative duties as all the members were said to have fled the state. They left the state for fear of being attacked by the supporters of governor Nyako and his deputy whom they set out on Wednesday to impeach without understanding the under-current waters of political game of the state.
And on top of it, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was said to have frozen the account of the state, obviously, with an order from the usual ‘above.’
Indeed, the disappearance of governor, his deputy and members of the state House of Assembly from their duty posts, for whatever reason or excuse, is a serious matter that needs to be addressed. It is simply an indication that Adamawa state is out of existence within the context of functionality.
And the question that quickly arises is who will address the serious matter of a state without a government, especially, in a situation where the federal government that should be an abbiter has its hand already full with dirty political schemings against the real and pervieved ‘enemies’ or oponenets? When an allegation is flying around that it is even the federal government that bribed the impoverished lawmakers to stoke the fire of trouble; the fire that they themselves ran away from when it became uncomfortably hot, where do we go from here?
It is very unfortunate that the leaders that should be finding solution to the heat Nigeria is already going through, in terms of war against terrorism, in terms of political tupsy-turvey and uncertainty and other known and unknown slippery socio-political matters, are the same that are playing the politics of arm-twisting, naked nihilistic tendencies, brigandage and despotism. These negative and primitive political attitudes have been flying aroung the country: from Adamawa state to Rivers state and of course, Ekiti state, where oposition governors were ambushed, detained and prevented from exercising their human and constitutional rights of free movement and free association and assembly.
One is at a loss as to whether the promoters and practitioners of these primitive political antics are not aware of the possible repercussion of such activities on the general body politics of the country, and the country itself now and in future.
It is more of a share madness that some people in high places are knowingly plunging the country into a dangerous precipice without caring a hoot.
Of course, it should not be as if it is strange for democrat to hear that one political party is, by natural democratic practice and arrangement, always trying to get an upper hand over another political party, especially when it comes to contest for positions. However, one expects that such contest for positions should be made to look healthy.
However, when what is supposed to be healthy competition for the attention of the electorate is allowed to degenerate into personal vendetta, mudslinging, attacks, using ill acquired money, soldiers that ought to be apolitical, police that are supposed to be peace makers, raw power and other devious means to cow down oponents, it becomes frightening. The naked use of power, flexing of enomous muscles by leaders as if the purpose of governance is to trample on everyone and everything that as much as blink an eye on such leaders, poses danger not only to the part of the country, but the whole. And the loosers are all the people in it.
Yes, the governor, whose face irritates and must not be allowed to continue on his seat; his deputy, who simply demonstrates loyalty to his boss and members of the state Assembly, who miscalculated the political geography of their state and became the carriers of ‘bad’ news to the state have all gone into hiding, but after all that, there is still a big question as to when will the government begin to function again in Adamawa state; by who and how?
It is interesting that the whole world is watching the drama in Adamawa state as it unfolds; and other parts of the country where democracy is being turned on its head.

Nigeria Labour Describes Cavalier Use Of Soldiers In Furtherance Of Dirty Job As Nihilistic

NLC PresidentThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described the cavalier use of soldiers, especially in furtherance of a dirty job as nihilistic.
The Labour condemned in strong terms the denial of access to Ekiti, of some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors, including, Rotimi Amaechi, Adams Oshiomhole, Musa Kwankwaso and Wammako of Sokoto State.
It advised President Jonathan to ensure that such thing never happens again, adding that “the cavalier use of our soldiers, especially in furtherance of a dirty job is nihilistic.”
The governors were to be in the state to take part in the party’s last mega rally before the gubernatorial election in Ekiti State.
In a statement by its president, comrade Abdulwahed Ibrahim Omar, the NLC described the action as tyrannical and a violation of their constitutional right to freely move, associate and express themselves.
He said the security officers that barred the governors cited orders from above and wondered who gave these orders and on the basis of which authority the orders were given.
“We at the Congress believe the orders are a violation of Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) which states that “For the purpose of this Act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.”
“The hypocrisy of ‘these orders’ is laid bare by the their selective implementation as the Ministers of Defence and Police Affairs, (both of PDP), Messrs Musiliu Obanikoro and Jelili Adesanya were said to have been given passage with fanfare.
He stated security operative’s conduct was not only a tyrannical use of power, but an assault on our hard earned democracy and must not be allowed to stand.
The statement reads: “We warn that those who undermine the democratic and constitutional rights of others not only endanger our democracy but make a bad investment as whatever goes around, comes around. President Jonathan should ensure this never happens again. The cavalier use of our soldiers, especially in furtherance of a dirty job is nihilistic.
“We also find it necessary to caution against the over-militarization of the state as this has the potential of scaring voters from exercising their civic duty.
“For the purpose of emphasis, we are not against providing security for voters but soldiers should not be deployed in a manner that suggest that the nation is at war with a foreign enemy.”

Super Eagles Camp Divides Into Three, Threatens Its Prospect At Brazil World Cup Tourney

Maigari

There are serious indications that a deep-rooted animosity has cropped up in the camp of the Super Eagles in Brazil, threatening its prospects in the ongoing World Cup tournament in Brazil. The animosity is believed to be eating deep into the unity of the team and tearing the team into three different groups.

It is believed that one of the groups is made up of players that are loyal to captain Joseph Yobo who want him to make a record 100 appearance for the Super Eagles, while the second group is said to be loyal to one of the assistant coaches that is said to be very influential in the camp, the loyalist are players he influenced their selection.  This group is alleged to be very angry with Turkey based Emmanuel Emenike because they felt he has suddenly grown wings, proud and arrogant and in exchange he won’t be feed with passes.

Soccer pundits fear that if this division is not quickly resolved before the Eagle play their next match against Bosnia & Herzegovina then Nigeria should be ready to go back home with a bag full of goals.

It was gathered also that the Stoke City striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie has been left alone in a pathetic situation to sulk coach Stephen Keshi’s recent out burst on him that he didn’t play to instruction in the match against Iran.

Pundits penciled teamwork as one of the topmost important ingredient of a successful team, noting that the African Champions now appears to lack, which a signal for over 170 million Nigerians to forget about Brazil 2014 in a haste. [myad]

Oando Shines At Nigeria’s Stock Exchange, Set For $1.65 Billion ConocoPhillips Acquisition

Oando CEOOando Plc today, shone today at the Nigeria’s stock exchange, hitting the maximum allowed 10 percent, even as it confirmed that it has won government approval to complete a $1.65 billion acquisition of ConocoPhillips’ Nigerian assets.

Oando, which has triple listings in Johannesburg and Toronto, rose to 30.37 naira ($0.19) per share, helping to lift the index of Nigeria’s top five oil and gas firms up by 4.51 percent.

Oando said on June 18 that it had received government approval to complete the deal which it had agreed last year but was delayed several times due to problems of raising funds.

Oil industry and banking sources said that the Nigerian oil firm has paid $550 million in cash to ConocoPhillips for the acquisition and secured bank financing to complete the payment.

Analysts expect the deal to contribute a significant proportion to Oando’s profit and plan to re-rate the stock. Oando shares have risen 13.7 percent this year, valuing the oil firm at 269.4 billion naira ($1.65 bln).

“We believe this is material catalyst for Oando that should … lead to the ultimate re-rating,” analysts at Renaissance Capital wrote in a note.

Oando hopes the acquisition will help it make the transition from a marketer of refined petroleum products into an upstream business focused on oil and gas exploration and production.

Conoco’s fields produced about 43,000 barrels of oil a day last year and have proven reserves of 213 million barrels of oil equivalent. Oando chief executive Wale Tinubu has said the upstream business will account for about three quarters of Oando’s assets after the acquisition, against 40 percent now.

Rival firm, Seplat, which raised $500 million in a debut stock market listing in Lagos and London in April, has current net oil production of around 35,000 barrels per day – the same level as London-listed Afren, according to Renaissance Capital estimates.

Seplat traded flat on Friday on Nigeria’s bourse at 671.11 naira ($4.12) per share, valuing it at $2.28 billion. [myad]

2008 Oil Spills In Nigeria: Shell Offers 11,000 Victims 30 Million Pounds

Oil spillsRoyal Dutch Shell is believed to have accepted to pay up to 30 million pounds in compensation for two oil spills in Nigeria in 2008 after a London court rejected a larger claim.

Sources involved in the case said today that about 11,000 residents of the Bodo community in the Niger Delta will be the beneficiaries of the money. They are being represented by law firm, Leigh Day which appealed in 2011 to a London court for more than 300 million pounds in compensation for the spilling of 500,000 barrels of oil.

The London High Court, today, rejected the claimants’ attempts to expand the scope of the compensation, ruling that the pipeline operator could not be held responsible for damage caused by oil theft.

Shell’s offer from September 2013 to settle the case for 30 million pounds remained on the table, sources involved in the case said.

A trial is planned to start in May 2015 in Nigeria, but Shell urged the claimants to reach a settlement beforehand.

“From the outset, we’ve accepted responsibility for the two deeply regrettable operational spills in Bodo,” Mutiu Sunmonu, Managing Director of the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC), said in a statement.

“We hope the community will now direct their UK legal representatives to stop wasting even more time pursuing enormously exaggerated claims and consider sensible and fair compensation offers,” Sunmonu said.

Massive oil theft, sabotage of infrastructure and leaks from aging pipelines are cutting into the profits of oil majors operating in Nigeria, as well as damaging the public finances of the African economy. [myad]

Brazil soccer attack

Overzealous Brazilians were said to have launched an attack on England fans in Brazil at a bar in Sao Paulo near Fifa’s Fan Fest, leaving no fewer than 10 people being hospitalized for various degrees of injuries. The attackers, out of which fifteen of them have been arrested by the Brazilian police, were said to have thrown fire crackers at their victims.

Brazilian police have confirmed that they arrested 15 people following the attack outside two bars on the Avenida Sao Joao. It happened at around 1.30pm local time, two-and-a-half hours before England’s crucial Group D clash with the Uruguayans began.

Police have said that all those arrested were Brazilian, and they were seen wearing hoods and dark clothing when they allegedly threw a bomb towards fans standing outside the Guanabara Bar and the Planeta Fruta snack bar. Other reports claim that petrol bombs and mortars were used in the attack.

They also reported that they seized six rockets, a set of brass knuckles, a dagger, a mouth guard and fireworks from the group, who were seen to hurl mortars at the fans before ripping up the St George’s Cross flags that the England fans had in support of Roy Hodgson’s side. [myad]
