U.S Professor Loses Associate Fellow Post For Querying Climate Change

Professor in US
An adjunct professor at American University in Washington, D.C,
Dr. Caleb Rossiter has been removed from his post as an Associate Fellow at the progressive Institute for Policy Studies. He was removed a few days after a newspaper published his opinion piece calling man-made global warming an “unproved science.”
Dr. Rossiter taught courses on climate statistics, and holds a Ph.D. in policy analysis and a master’s degree in mathematics.
In a Wall Street Journal article published on May 4, he urged an expansion of carbon-based energy in Africa.
“I started to suspect that the climate-change data were dubious a decade ago while teaching statistics,” he wrote.
“Computer models used by the U.N. Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to determine the cause of the six-tenths of one degree Fahrenheit rise in global temperatures from 1980 to 2000 could not statistically separate fossil-fueled and natural trends.
“The left wants to stop industrialization—even if the hypothesis of catastrophic man-made global warming is false.
“We are not rationing our electricity. Why should Africa?”
The respected academician concludes in the write-up that it would be “terrible to think that so many people in the West” would block carbon-based energy in Africa “in the name of unproved science.”
And on May 7, Dr. Rossiter received an email from the Institute for Policy Studies, which describes itself as “a community of public scholars and organizers linking peace, justice, and the environment” in the United States and globally.
It began: “Dear Caleb, We would like to inform you that we are terminating your position as an Associate Fellow. Unfortunately, we now feel that your views on key issues, including climate science, climate justice, and many aspects of U.S. policy to Africa, diverge so significantly from ours that a productive working relationship is untenable.”
In an exclusive interview with the Climate Depot website, Dr. Rossiter said: “If people ever say that fears of censorship from ‘climate change’ views are overblown, have them take a look at this: Just days after I published a piece in The Wall Street Journal calling for Africa to be allowed the ‘all of the above’ energy strategy we have in the U.S., the Institute for Policy Studies terminated my 23-year relationship with them.
“I have tried to get [IPS] to discuss and explain their rejection of my analysis,” he said. “When I countered a claim of ‘rapidly accelerating’ temperature change with the IPCC’s own data, showing the nearly 20-year temperature pause, the best response I ever got was ‘Caleb, I don’t have time for this.'”
On May 13, Dr. Rossiter wrote a blog on his own website headlined “The debate is finally over on ‘global warming’— because nobody will debate.
“My blood simply boils too hot when I read the blather, daily, about climate catastrophe.
“Obama has long been delusional on this issue, speaking of a coming catastrophe. But he really went off the chain in his State of the Union address this year: ‘For the sake of our children and our future.’ [myad]

China Demolishes 360 Christian Churches, Crosses

China PM
Officials in China’s Zhejiang province have launched what Christian activists call an “anti-church” campaign that has reportedly damaged or demolished about 360 church buildings and crosses.
One recent attack on China’s Christian community came with officials’ attempts to remove a cross from the Guantou church in Wenzhou.
Wenzhou, a port city on the South China Sea, has for centuries been a hub of Christian missionary activity and is known as “China’s Jerusalem.”
Before 1949, it was home to around 115,000 Christians, more than one-tenth of China’s total at the time.
On June 11, security guards with batons and riot shields were said to have been deployed to prevent members of the Guantou church from entering the building and attempting to halt the removal of a large red cross from one of the church’s domes.
Telegraph reported that the demolition workers were forced to retreat after church members got past the security personnel and disconnected the power supply. Several churchgoers were slightly injured in the scuffle.
The report said that the demolition workers returned early on Tuesday, and the cross was secretly taken down between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.
A local Church leader, Zheng Legou, said that officials had threatened to tear down the entire church—as they did with the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou in April—if church members tried to stop the removal a second time.
The Telegraph published a photo showing a crane lifting a large red cross from the church. Another photo showed the damaged cross discarded on the church grounds.
Another church in Wenzhou scheduled to open to worshipers next year had its cross removed on June 15, according to The Telegraph.
Authorities have notified at least 15 churches that if they don’t remove their crosses by the end of June, they will face demolition, according to China Aid, a Christian advocacy group that claims some 360 church buildings and crosses have already been attacked.
Activists believe the Communist Party is attempting to rein in the growth of Christianity.
The government maintains that the demolition campaign is aimed at all illegal buildings and “eyesores” and not just churches.
But government documents obtained by The New York Times disclose that the campaign is intended to bring “excessive religious sites” and “overly popular” religious activities under control.
Christian activists are increasingly convinced, The Telegraph observes, that the “anti-church” campaign in Zhejiang “may be a precursor for similar actions across the country.” [myad]

Be Humble In Victory, President Jonathan Advices Fayose

Fayose and Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has advised Peter Ayodele Fayose who has just been declared winner of the Saturday governorship election in Ekiti state under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be humble and magnanimous in victory.
He also asked him to be committed to forming an administration that will work for the advancement of the interests of all Ekiti people, irrespective of their political affiliations or loyalties.
In a congratulatory message to the governor-elect today, President Jonathan asked Fayose to regard his second chance to serve as Governor of Ekiti State as a sacred mandate from God and the people.
He said that the governor should discharge the gubernatorial responsibility with immense dedication, wisdom and vigour to achieve a much more rapid pace of socio-economic development of the state and for the benefit of its people who resoundingly reaffirmed their trust in his leadership.
He congratulated the governor-elect for what he called “an overwhelming victory in the governorship election.
The President said that as Fayose gets set to assume office in fulfillment of the clearly expressed wish of his people, the federal government will give him all necessary support and assistance.
This is in furtherance “of the present administration’s objective of significantly improving the living conditions of Nigerians in all parts of the country.”
The President wished Fayose continued good health and a successful second tenure as governor of Ekiti State, even as he commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Security Services and the people of Ekiti State for the successful and peaceful conduct of the elections.
This is “in keeping with the present administration’s avowed commitment to ensuring that elections in all parts of Nigeria are progressively freer, fairer and more credible.” [myad]

Super Eagles Pass Needle’s Eye, Manage 1-0 Win Over Bosnia

Peter Osaze Odemwingie

The Super Eagles of Nigeria returned some measure of smile back to the faces of despondent Nigerians when they beat the Bosnia national team…1 goal to nothing to remain in Brazil for the next match in the ongoing World Cup Tournament.

The Eagles had crawled to a drabbed and unimpressive start in their group opening match with Iran which ended in zero at piece.

A first-half strike from Peter Odemwingie was enough for Nigeria to register their first win in nine matches in the World Cup and defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Group F clash in Cuiaba on Saturday.

World Cup debutants Bosnia, after losing the opener against Argentina 2-1, were facing a must-win situation against the Super Eagles, who were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Iran in their first match.

Bosnia started the match on the back foot and gifted a free-kick to the West Africans in the early minutes when Haris Medunjanin brought down Emmanuel Emenike but Odemwingie put his shot inches wide.

Emenike threatened Bosnia several times and created a number of chances as skipper Emir Spahic failed to restrict the 27-year-old. Emenike outpaced Spahic in the 29th minute and passed the ball to Odemwingie, who made no mistake in tucking home the winner.

However, the Dragons were robbed a goal minutes before when Edin Dzeko slotted home from Zvejzdan Misimovic’s precise through-ball but he was wrongly given off-side. [myad]

Opposition Boycott Mauritanian Presidential Election

Mauretenia President

The major opposition parties in Mauritania have boycotted the Presidential election, which incumbent President, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is widely expected to win and hold on to power.

Analysts said the main challenge for Abdel Aziz would be to persuade enough voters to turn out for the presidential vote and give him a strong mandate.

Reports from Nouakchott, said polling went smoothly in the capital today and that there was “no doubt” Abdel Aziz would win.

Abdel Aziz, a former army general, came to power in August 2008 when he ousted President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellahi, the country’s first democratically elected president.

Abdel Aziz then won a 5-year term in a 2009 election that was heavily criticised by the opposition. No major rivals

The bulk of the opposition boycotted last year’s parliamentary elections and talks to try to persuade them to take part in Saturday’s vote broke down in April, leaving Abdel Aziz no major rivals.

The four challengers are former government minister Boidel Ould Houmeid, anti-slavery campaigner Biram Ould Abeid, Ibrahima Sarr, a challenger from the 2009 vote, and Mint Moulaye Idriss, an administrator at Mauritania’s national press agency and the country’s second female candidate.

Two weeks of campaigning ended late on Thursday having failed to rouse much enthusiasm across the country, where just over 1.3 million people are eligible to vote.

It was learnt that Abdel Aziz is running on a platform stating that since he came to power, Mauritania has become a better place.

“He said there are no more terrorist cells, and that Mauritania is well considered by its neighbours and by Western allies,” Elamrani said.

This summer, Abdel Aziz will co-chair an American-African Summit to be held in the US alongside President Barack Obama.

A runoff vote will be held on June 5 if no candidate gets the majority needed in the first round. [myad]

President Jonathan Warns Against Scuttling 2015 Elections

Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned Nigerians against scuttling the 2015 general elections through acts of violence and thuggery. He called on youths in particular to shun negative tendencies from politicians and vote for credible candidates with proven mettle for leadership.

The President spoke today at the 2nd convocation ceremony of the Nigeria Turkish Nile University, Abuja, in which Governor Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State and the Director-General, State Security Service, Ekpeyong Ita, were awarded honorary doctorate degrees.

“I would like to point out especially to our youths that the general elections are fast approaching, this calls for responsible engagement and participation.

“While encouraging you to vote for credible candidates of your choice, I urge you to shun all invitations to political thuggery or acts that can undermine free, fair and credible elections.”

President Jonathan, who was represented by the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Suleiman  Bagoro, said the  Federal Government was determined to win the war against terrorism, adding that the insurgency in Nigeria was calculated to undermine the nation’s cohesiveness.

“These are trying times for our country, occasioned by the challenge of terrorism, innocent  lives are being wasted by some people who have chosen to undermine our cohesiveness as a people.

“They will not succeed. We are determined to win this war and win back peace which is prerequisite for our development.”

He said efforts are being made to end the disparity between holders of Bachelor’s Degree and Higher National Diploma in the public service.

While discouraging over-dependence on paper qualifications, the President said the focus of his administration was to address comprehensively the challenges facing all sectors of education.

“Our aim in government is to address comprehensively, the challenges facing all sectors of education. We must move the focus from the mere acquisition of certificates to the development and application of skills for which individual students are best suited.” [myad]

Ekiti Governorship Poll: I Leave My Fate To God, Says Ayo Fayose

Ayo Fayose

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose has lamented alleged high level of money-politics being displayed the All Progressives Congress (APC) even as he said that whatever happened, he would leave his fate in the hand of God.

Fayose expressed worry that despite the presence of heavy security in various parts of the state, agents of APC and other political parties were busy freely distributing money to voters at polling units, adding that the rate of violence was also very high.

Speaking to newsmen on Saturday shortly after casting his vote in Afao area of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, the PDP hopeful said: “the issue of money sharing is unfortunate. It is disturbing when highly placed people in government are assigned to polling units to be sharing money. It is unfortunate. Whatever way it (election) goes, I will leave it to God.

“The violence is unprecedented. I called the Inspector General of Police to inform him of the violence. And I called the State Security Service Director in the state and I told him this violence is unprecedented. It is unfortunate but I hope we do not carry this into the 2015 election.”

On whether the violence he alleged would mar his chances, Fayose said: “I have to collate and get information before I can make a statement on whether the violence will affect my chances but I know I have done well, I have campaigned well and I am loved by my people.”

Meanwhile, soldiers and policemen arrested no fewer than seven journalists in various parts of the state as the voting was going on. Our correspondent witnessed the arrest of an unidentified photojournalist in blue native by a team of soldiers for taking their picture in front of Fayose’s house in Afao.

The journalist was put into a patrol vehicle and driven to an unknown destination, while five other journalists identified as, Toyin Yusuf, Oyetunji Ojo, Akin Ogunsola and Aremu Awolola and Jadesola Ajibola of Inspiration FM as well as other technical staff of the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation were arrested by the police.

It was learnt that the reporters were arrested by a team of over 50 policemen at Ifaki Ekiti in Ido-Osi Local Government Area and were reportedly dumped at the Kwara boundary.
One of the reporters, Ajibola, said the Police Mobile Force Commander, identified only as Patrick, handed them over to a senior police officer identified as G.B Seleke, and told them not to return to the state.

“The commander told us that we had no business being in Ekiti State despite our protests that we were accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission. We showed them our tags but the policemen were adamant.” [myad]
