In spite of the violence, destruction and veiled attempt by terrorists to lure Nigeria into unnecessary conflicts, the resolve by Nigerians and their leaders to keep the country one has remained unshaken.
From the speeches by various delegates at the ongoing National Conference, it has become clear that Nigerians have decided to remain united. The delegates have, from different members, mix feeling to the insurgency, but are unted in observing the urgent need for all to be extra-vigilant in their various locations to check the excesses of those causing mayhem.
At the Conference, shades of opinions pointed at the fact that Nigeria’s borders are porous, thereby exposing the country to infiltration by undesirable elements from the neidgbouring countries, even as they insisted that the citizenry need to always pay attention to the security of the neighborhood and towns.
The security agencies in the country deserve some kind of commendation, though there is still much to be done in terms of making more drastic moves to stem the security challenges.
Pastor Tunde Bakare, one of the members of the Confab did say at the plenary: “May l humbly suggest that we send a very strong signal from this conference that we are not safe as long as Nigerians are being slaughtered. He even romance with an idea of suspending the business of the conference “until we see change. That will let them know that we are serious. A drastic situation requires a drastic step.”
Bakare called on the fellow delegates to take step towards ebsuring the safety of the delegates and more importantly, Nigeria and Nigerians, saying: “the death of one is the death of all.”
The entire delegates supported the motion, casting a pall picture on the nation with all the security burden.
The question is where do we go from here?

Help, Our Children Are Dropping Out Of Schools, Governor Uduaghan Cries Out To Religious Leaders

GovernorGoverno Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has called on religious leaders to intervene in the high rate of students that are dropping out of schools, even as he sought their assistance in asking parents to take parental upbringing seriously.
The Governor made the call today in Asaba when he played host to the General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church Worldwide, Pastor William Kumuyi. Wife of the Governor, Deaconess Roli Uduaghan and other top government functionaries were present at the occasion.
Governor Uduaghan emphasized his unhappiness with the rate of out- of- school children in the country, saying that it is a challenge for religious leaders to convince parents to ensure that their children have a proper upbringing. According to him, the rate of criminality among young children could be linked to lack of parental care.
“We hear that about 40 per cent of children that are supposed to be in schools in the country are not in schools and for us in Delta State, it is about 10 per cent and we are also very worried that we still have people who are not in school. So we set up the ‘EduMarshal’ to ensure that every child that is of school age gets back to school.
“We have discovered vices among children which are attributable to lack of parental care; I want to beg you as a Spiritual Leader to admonish parents to be more responsible to their duties as criminality starts from the child’s upbringing.”
Dr. Uduaghan reiterated that his administration is would ensure that no child of school age is out of school, adding that primary and secondary education are free in the state while over 280 Deltans who are first class graduates have benefited from his administration’s scholarship programme for first class graduates.
While calling on Pastor Kumuyi to pray for the state and Nigeria as a nation, Governor Uduaghan attributed the achievements of his administration in the past seven years to the handiwork of God, asserting.
“The finger of God is working in Delta State,” he asserted.
Earlier, Pastor Kumuyi said that he was on a pastoral visit to the state even as he lauded Governor Uduaghan’s developmental stride.
“when I was entering Delta State, everything has virtually changed. Great things have been done in the stateM I want to commend the developmental stride of the Governor.
“I will not be surprised if the state becomes a model in the country. The Governor looks so simple and unassuming. He is a great gift to Delta State and the country.”
Pastor Kumuyi said that he is interested in youth’s development, especially on their spiritual and material greatness.
He stressed the need for the nation to invest more in the youths and to impact positively on their lives.

US Gives Egypt $650 Million To Fight Terrorism

obamaGovernment of the United States of America has announced in Washington that it is sending 10 helicopters and $650 million to help Egypt’s counter-terrorism operations.

Spokeswoman for the US State Department, Jen Psaki, said the gesture is part of a move to lift its hold on sending military aid money and equipment to the country.

She said that in the near future, $650m would be released to Egypt, adding that the money is separate from the 10 choppers.

The choppers and the $650m are to help Egypt’s counter-terrorism operations in the Sinai, border security and non-proliferation, the US officials said.

Psaki said that the $650m would be released subject to congressional approval of documents, adding that the documents would soon be sent to Congress by Secretary of State John Kerry.

Psaki said the documents would confirm if Egypt is upholding its strategic relationship with the US and maintaining its obligations under the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty.

Chuck Hagel, Egypt Secretary of Defence, informed Egypt’s defence minister, Gen. Sedki Sobhy, that US does not believe Egypt is supporting a democratic transition.

He said that it is not clear if Kerry’s ‘certifications’ meant the US believes Morsi’s ouster was not a coup, nor if the other military equipment would be delivered.

Hagel said the U.S. believes the new helicopters would help the Egyptian government counter extremists who threaten US, Egyptian and Israeli security.

In July 2013, the US put a hold on the delivery of four F-16 fighter jets, M2A1 tanks and Apache helicopters in response to Morsi’s ouster.

The US said then it would keep the lid on military deliveries and funding until it determined if Morsi’s ouster was a coup.
