President Jonathan Sad Over Recurring Security Challenges, Summons Governors, Security Chiefs To Meetings

jonathan_goodluckPresident Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep regrets on the pain, sorrow and anguish brought upon many Nigerian families in recent days as a consequence of recurring security challenges which the nation is contending with.
This is even as the President has summoned members of the National Security Council, all the governors and security chiefs to series of meetings at the Presidential Villa tomorrow to find ways out of the security mess.
A statement by the Special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said that those expected at the meeting that would take almost the whole day, include Vice President Namadi Sambo, the Minister of Defence, Lt.-Gen Aliyu Gusau, the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.), the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Services and the Director-General of National Intelligence Agency.
The statement said that the meeting of the National Security Council will be followed by an enlarged meeting on security developments in the country to which President Jonathan has invited State Governors.
It said that the President, members of the National Security Council and the state governors will review the security situation in the country as well as ongoing national security measures and operations with a view to determining the best way forward.
President Jonathan has, meanwhile, expressed particular concern over the plight of the young Senior Secondary School girls who were reportedly abducted from their school in Borno State on Monday night and has ordered the military and national security agencies to deploy maximum efforts towards rescuing all of the girls and returning them safely to their parents.
He is elated however, by reports that the military and security agencies have already rescued some of the girls, saying that he is convinced that with the patriotic commitment and support of all Nigerians, the country will ultimately overcome its present challenges and move forward in unity and strength.
President Jonathan further reassured all Nigerians and persons living in the country that the Federal Government remains very mindful of its responsibility for the safety of their lives and properties in all parts of Nigeria and will continue to do everything possible to protect them from the scourge of terrorism and insecurity.
He pleaded with politicians in the country to continue to exhibit greater responsibility and patriotism by doing more to support his administration’s sincere efforts to enhance national security rather than trying to build political capital out of the pain and misery of their compatriots.

Boko Haram Asked Us To Count Ourselves, Borno Abduction Escapee Recounts

boko haramMembers of the deadly Boko Haram “asked us to count ourselves,” one of the female students who escaped after being abducted at the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State has said.
The student, named Hajara, who recounted her ordeal in the hands of the Boko Haram abdoctors before she escaped said that the number of students abducted were 243.
She said that their abductors were over one hundred, adding that only about 80 of them were able to jump off the broken down truck in which they were being transported across a bush and ran to safety.
The students were abducted on Monday evening by heavily armed Boko Haram Islamists.
The girls were said to have fled when a truck conveying them to Boko Haram camp broke down on the way. The lucky girls reportedly jumped off the broken down truck, escaped into the bush and made their way to safety. The escaped students were said to have scattered in the bush when the vigilante and local hunters found them.
It was learnt that some of them were wounded while others sustained some fractures, as a result of jumping from the high vehicle.
The parents of the escapees thanked God that their children have been rescued, even as they prayed for those who are still with the Boko Haram to come back safely.
“Our prayer is that every father will have his child back,” one of the parents said, adding that his daughter came back sound and healthy but weak stressing.
“Our children told us that when they started running, the insurgents didn’t shoot them. They allowed those who could run to go but those who could not run either as a result of fear or wound are still with them in the bush.”

Fear Grips US As al-Qaida Threatens Direct Attack, Holds Secret Meeting

obamaThe United States of America is now struck by fear as the most dangerous part of direct al-Qaida threatens it, even as members were said to have held a secret meeting  in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)

Michigan member in the US House of Representatives, Mike Rogers, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, said that members of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula [AQAP] have changed their communications methods following leaks last year about intelligence collection in Yemen.
Video of a recent meeting  of 100 al-Qaida members in Yemen, including some of its top leaders, is raising questions about whether the United States was unaware of the outdoor event and therefore unable to strike it with a drone attack.
AQAP is now are more reliant on couriers, much like former al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden used while hiding from U.S. intelligence for more than a decade.
Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the No. 2 leader of al-Qaida worldwide and the head of AQAP, was at the meeting, according to the video posted on jihadist websites. AQAP is considered the most dangerous wing of al-Qaida.
Al-Wuhayshi is seen in the video appearing to make direct threats at the United States.
“We must eliminate the cross. The bearer of the cross is America,” al-Wuhayshi says in a translation of his speech.
“The main problem about this group is that it has a bomb maker who can put bombs on to planes that can’t be detected,” CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen told the network. Bergen was speaking of Ibrahim al-Asiri, who is thought to be behind several attacks on the United States, including the failed 2009 Christians Day underwear bomber in Detroit.
Al-Asiri is not seen in the video.
Rogers told CNN he is not at liberty to say whether U.S. intelligence knew about the meeting or whether it simply couldn’t get a drone there fast enough. But his blaming the lack of attack on AQAP’s change in communications methods seemed to indicate the United States was unaware it was happening.
“Those series of leaks have had a consequence,” Rogers said.
When asked whether the United States would have attacked the meeting had it known about it, Rogers replied, “It all depends.”
There are policies in place that would prevent an attack on a target that exceeds a certain number of individuals, he said, but added he doesn’t think those policies were the reason the meeting shown in the video was not attacked.
It can be hard to get assets in position, Rogers noted, explaining that intelligence groups have to know where and when such groups are meeting.
Also, intelligence information has to be “exactly right” if a drone is going to target such a large gathering.
“I think they have these meetings more often than people realize,” Rogers said. Al-Qaida is feeling “empowered” because it believes the West is unable to know what they are doing, he said

Nigerian Witchcraft Preacher Frightens UK Citizens, Faces Deportation

Helen witchcraft preacher

Rights campaigners in the United Kingdom have urged the government to ban Nigerian pentecostal preacher, Lady Apostle Helen Ukpabio from coming into the country, even as they seek for her deported right away, on grounds that her preaches are ‘harmful to the public.’

The 45 year old preacher and founder of Liberty Foundation Gospel Ministries, who styles herself a ‘witch-hunter’ claims any child who cries is a ‘servant of Satan.’ She is reported to be in the UK at the moment, holding a number of church services to promote her belief in witchcraft and offer help to those ‘under threat’ from the wizardry.

The Mail of London reported today that the Witchcraft and Human Rights Information Network (WHRIN), the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales and the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) have written to the Home Secretary in an attempt to get Ms Ukpabio deported under the Immigration Act 1971 – on the grounds her presence here is not conducive to the public good.

In a letter to Ms Theresa May, the campaigners warn: ‘Whilst the Government has moved swiftly to block entry to the UK for Islamic preachers whose presence is considered as harmful to the public good, there have been no cases of Christian pastors facing such measures.’

The groups are hoping that the pastor will be banned from returning to the UK once she has completed her final tour.

A poster advertising one of Ms Ukpabio’s most recent talks – which was cancelled after the venue was leaked online – claims to offer help to people who are under ‘witchcraft attack, ancestral spirit attack or mermaid spirit attack’ and claims to help ‘disconnect’ them.

However, campaigners have warned her controversial views are dangerous to children – including the belief that ‘if a child under the age of two screams in the night, cries and is always feverish with deteriorating health, he or she is a servant of Satan’.

Injury Stops Cristiano Ronaldo In Real Madrid, Barcelona Tie

ronaldo

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo will miss his side’s Copa del Rey final against rivals Barcelona today. Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Ronaldo, 29, would not play in Valencia because of a hamstring injury.

“Cristiano is not available because we don’t want to take risks and we have other very important games to come this season,” said Ancelotti.

Madrid face holders, Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champion league semi-final on Wednesday, 23 April.

Ronaldo has missed Real’s last three games with the injury but Ancelotti believes his side will be able to cope in the final, having lost just one of the 10 games the World Player of the Year has missed this season.

“We are going to lose a player with an incredible quality, but his absence has provided motivation for the team to run more and play more as a team,” added Ancelotti.

Madrid have lost twice to Barcelona in their league meetings this season but those results have been high points in a disappointing campaign for the Catalans

Barcelona are third in La Liga – behind Real and leaders Atletico Madrid – following a shock defeat by Granada last weekend and last week went out of the Champion League to Atletico

That was the first time in seven seasons Barcelona, who have also been hit by a transfer ban by FIFA had failed to reach the Champions League semi-finals but midfielder Andres Iniesta is hoping to to add to their record tally of 26 Copa del Rey wins.

“We would all like to live in a world of roses where everything is wonderful, but reality is not like that,” said the Spain international.

“This is a title, it is something for the fans and us to cheer.”

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has defensive problems with Gerard Pique, Marc Bartra and Carles Puyol all serious doubts.

As well as Ronaldo, Madrid are likely to be without Brazilian full-back Marcelo but central defender Sergio Ramos is expected to play after recovering from a neck injury.

2015: Gulak Inaugurates Goodluck Support Group In South-South, Insists He Must Contest

GULAK

Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Affairs, Ahmed Gulack, yesterday, inaugurated the South South Zonal office of Goodluck Support Group with a call on the President to contest for second term in office come 2015.

Gulak asked Nigerians to support the President in 2015 general elections due to his commitment to alleviating the people’s plight.

He said Jonathan had been able to revamp decayed infrastructure in the country within his few years in office.
Gulak, who is also the National Coordinator of GSG, urged Nigerians to join hands towards re-electing Jonathan as president of Nigeria for a second term, stressing that the president has the right to seek a second term in office.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us and it’s unfortunate that there are many people that want to bring down the country. The time has come for Nigerians to say enough is enough. Jonathan is the only Nigerian leader that has shown sincerity in addressing Nigerian problems.

“The resuscitation of the railways; privatisation of power sector, agriculture, establishment of almajiri schools, are some of the things credited to Mr. President.

“Opposition parties in other countries do their work of criticisms very well; but when it comes to national issues, they join hands towards making the country a better place for everybody.

“The opposition we see in Nigeria rather sponsors negative activities against the interest of the country and this is not the way it should be.”

Gulak called on politicians to play by the rules of the game of politics instead of being sentimental to the detriment of national growth.

In his remarks, former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Nsima Ekere, urged Nigerians to be patient with Jonathan, saying that the decayed infrastructure in the country today was due to neglect by previous administrations.

“The level of the decay in infrastructure has been so enormous that people do not seem to see the efforts Mr President is making to revamp the infrastructure.

“It is going to take time and investment by the government and the private investors to actually turn the power sector around.

“Some of the programmes and projects of Mr President will take a couple of years before you can actually see the effects on the country and the economy.

“The good thing is that we are now on track. That is why we must support Mr President to continue to lead this country to fulfill these aims.

“If we leave him or distort what we have today, it is going to take a long time to begin to plan.

“Somebody that will come again will begin to consider whether to start his own projects or continue with the existing ones.

“He has to bring in a new team and formulate new policies which may differ entirely from what we are having.
“But if we allow the President, he is going to consolidate on the gains of those projects he has already begun.”
