Nurse Who Had Sex With Patient In Hospital Parking Lot Sacked

Penelope Williams, a nurse in the United Kingdom, who had sex with a patient in the parking lot in Wrexham, Wales, and he died of a heart attack, has been fired from her job.
Williams was fired after the hospital learned that she had maintained an affair with a patient for over a year, ending when the man died following a sexual encounter, Fox reports.
A disciplinary hearing in Cardiff was told that the pair had had a year-long sexual relationship.
He suffered a heart attack with his trousers around his ankles during the late-night tryst with Williams.
According to the report, the man, known as patient A, was receiving dialysis treatment, and he died of a heart attack during the late-night meeting in January last year.
Williams, 42, failed to call for an ambulance after the patient collapsed in the back of his car. He later died from “heart failure and chronic kidney disease triggered by a medical episode.”
The episode triggered an investigation and hearing before a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) fitness-to-practice panel, which heard testimony that Williams had ignored advice from colleagues who had urged her to call an ambulance.
Patient A had met Williams through work, with Williams helping to treat him for his condition. When emergency personnel eventually arrived, they found Patient A partially naked and unresponsive.
Williams had called a colleague instead of emergency personnel, and the colleague urged her to immediately call an ambulance, only for Williams to delay in doing so.
She was “crying and distressed and asking for help as she tried to explain that someone had died.”
The colleague ended up calling an ambulance instead and Patient A was found dead upon the arrival of the medical team.
A disciplinary hearing found that the pair had had a year-long sexual relationship.
During the late-night tryst with Williams, he suffered a heart attack with his trousers around his ankles.
Williams initially told police and a paramedic that she had gone to meet with him after he had messaged her on Facebook that he felt unwell.
She claimed she had spent only about “30 to 45 minutes” in the back of his car “just talking,” according to The Telegraph.
“She further explained that (the patient) started groaning and suddenly died,” she had testified at an initial February hearing.
Williams hid her 12-month affair with the man despite knowing that he was a dialysis patient under her at Wrexham Maelor hospital.
She later admitted to the ongoing relationship and that she had met up with him that night for a sexual encounter.
Her admission at a later hearing in May resulted in her final dismissal from her job.
The board determined that Williams had “brought the nursing profession into disrepute.”

ECOWAS Made Right Choice In Picking President Tinubu As Its Chairman – NGF

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), has said that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) made the right choice in picking the President of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its chairman.
A statement today, July 10, on behalf of the Forum, it’s chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, said that the unanimous endorsement of President Tinubu at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, underscored the confidence they have in him to provide progressive leadership for the regional organisation and introduce game-changing policies.
“We believe Mr. President will justify the confidence reposed in him, given his antecedents as a time-tested leader.
“With his wealth of experience in both private and public sectors, we have no doubt that the West African leaders have made the right choice.”
The NGF called on all stakeholders to cooperate with President Tinubu on this significant responsibility to place West Africa on the global map.

Don’t Appoint Ganduje, Matawalle, Bagudu As Ministers, Northern Youths Tell Tinubu

The Voice of Northern Youths Patriots (VNYP) has cautioned President Bola Tinubu not to appoint former governors Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, and Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State as ministers.
The Kano State branch of the group, at a news conference today, July 10, said that appointing the ex-governors as ministers would make the president eat his words.
Alhaji Mustapha Mai-Royal, Leader of the group, said that the three governors are already under EFCC investigation for alleged corruption cases to the tune of billions of Naira.
The group asked President Tinubu not to go back on the promise of giving the country the best leadership it needed by appointing the best hands to manage the nation’s resources for optimal performance.
It said it would not be fair if the North is forced to disregard whatever the president would tell them in future after making the wrong appointments.
“We are hereby calling on His Excellency, President Bola Ahmad Tinubu, not to appoint some three former governors from the North West region as ministers because of various cases of (alleged) corruption against them.
“Mr President, you have stated that you would run an all inclusive government for the unification and betterment of the country, we want to see that from the people you are going to appoint from our region.
“These former governors from the North West have not displayed such qualities as to deserve being appointed in your government because they are only after their personal aggrandisement,” the youth leader stated.
“We have seen the poor performance of some of the these governors in the fight against insecurity in their states and the roles they have played.
“These weaknesses are enough for Mr President to consider and not appoint them into his cabinet,” Mai-Royal explained.

Stop It!!! Court Orders INEC, Over Prosecution Of Suspended Adamawa REC

An Abuja Federal High Court, has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from prosecuting the suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa-Ari.
Hudu had declared Aisha Dahiru Binani, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as winner of the Governorship poll of  March 18.
Justice Donatus Okorowo made the order stopping Hudu’s prosecution today, July 10, after Michael Aondoaka (SAN), counsel to Dahiru, moved the ex-parte motion to the effect.
In the ex-parte motion, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/935/2023, the APC candidate in the poll, sued INEC, Attorney-General.of the Federation (AGF) and another  as as respondents.
Aondoaka, while moving the motion, argued that until the election petition tribunal decides the fate of his client in accordance with Section 149 of the Electoral Act, 2022, the prosecution of Yunusa-Ari cannot be said to be valid.
He said that the decision of INEC to file action against any person involved in Dahiru’s April 15 declaration as winner of the supplementary poll in the state when the tribunal is yet to determine the petition of his client,  would deprive her of Section 285 (6) of the law, which gives 180 days within which the petition filed on May 6 should be dispensed with.
The senior lawyer told the court that though a similar suit was earlier filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo where a judicial review of INEC’s action was sought, but that the sister court ordered Binani to approach a tribunal with her suit, having been an election-related matter.
He said that an undertaking had been signed to prove to the court that the present suit is not frivolous.
He said that in the undertaking, they were ready to face any cost should the court find the case to be frivolous.
After listening to Andoaka, Justice Okorowo ordered the parties to maintain status quo ante bellum, pending the hearing and determination of the matter.
The judge, who adjourned the matter to July 18 for hearing, ordered the respondents to show cause while the reliefs sought by Dahiru, popularly called “Binani,” should not be granted.

Abuja Court Dismisses Suit Against INEC By Binani, Guber Candidate For Adamawa

An Abuja Court has dismissed a suit by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Aishatu Binani, against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the nullification of her declaration as the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.
Binani, through her counsel, Michael Andoaka (SAN), had filed the fresh suit before Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja.
In the ex-parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/935/2023, the APC candidate in the poll sued INEC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and its candidate, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as 1st, 2nd and 3rd respondents, respectively.
Binani sought a judicial review of the decision by INEC to reverse the earlier announcement that she won the poll, by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa-Ari.
Andoaka, while moving the motion today, July 10, argued that it was the election petition tribunal that was vested with the power to decide the fate of his client in accordance with Section 149 of the Electoral Act, 2022.
He said that the decision of INEC would deprive Binani of Section 285 (6), which gives 180 days within which her petition filed before the tribunal on May 6 could be dispensed with.
The lawyer, who informed the court that, though a similar suit was earlier filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo, said that the sister court ordered Binani to approach a tribunal her suit, having been an election-related matter.
Andoaka, therefore, sought a review of the INEC’s action.
He said that an undertaking had been signed to prove to the court that the present suit was not frivolous.
He said that in the undertaking that they were ready to face any cost should the court find the case to be frivolous.
After listening to Andoaka, Justice Okorowo stood down the matter for ruling.
Binani had, on April 26, withdrew the suit before Justice Ekwo, following the declaration of Fintiri as the winner of the governorship election.
Binani’s counsel, Mohammed Sheriff, upon resumed hearing in the matter, told Justice Ekwo that a notice of discontinuance had been filed to that effect and urged the court to strike out the case.
Justice Ekwo reminded Sheriff that an order was given on the last adjourned date directing him to address the court on whether the court had the jurisdiction to entertain the case or not.
The lawyer, who informed the court that a lot of issues had come up between the last date of adjournment and today, begged for an order striking out the suit.
The judge, however, held that since Sheriff had failed to go by the order of the court, the appropriate thing to do was to dismiss the matter.
Justice Ekwo later dismissed the suit.

Where Would Nigeria Be In The 4th Industrial Revolution, Stanley Jegede Asks

The Executive Chairman of Phase 3, Africa’s leading digital infrastructure cum technology player, Stanley Jegede, has asked where would Nigeria be in the fourth industrial revolution that is manifesting in the world.
At a recent career fair in partnership with the Nile Turkish University of Nigeria, Abuja, Stanley Jegede believed in activating what he called “a sustainable pool of 21st-century Nigerian talents” to advance a globally competitive economy for a more digitized African continent.
He said that the system can be regarded as a technological power in five to ten years with the right regulations, policies, internal and regional partnerships, and investments.
The Phase 3 executive chairman said: “it cannot be overstated that ICT is both an enabler and service structure with a multiplier economic and social effects, especially in consideration of its immense capabilities of assuring the digital literacy and economic empowerment of a citizenry.
“Active collaborations in critical sectors such as education is necessary for economic advancement, coupled with investments in innovations between technology companies and institutions of knowledge.
“This will stimulate innovative and consistent ICT infrastructure development and knowledge build across these institutions as well as youth population for an economically and socially sustainable future of Nigerians.”
Jegede reaffirmed that such collaborations are conduits for alleviating poverty, mitigating social impediments, and curbing vices by leveraging the power of technology to accelerate learning, diminish learning deficiency and support skills development as a motivation to bridge the gaps in the digital infrastructure (connectivity, devices, and software) and literacy gaps and deficits in Nigeria.
He argued that it would also disencumber human infrastructure from quality teacher capacity shortage to improving student skills, backed by logistical and administrative systems to deploy and maintain tech architecture for growing top talents in the country.
He suggested network corporate social responsibility and commitment to initiatives to help reform the education sector for exponential talent growth to engender multifaceted inventiveness and boost innovation capabilities of the nation’s teeming population as well as increase the employability of Nigerians.
It will be recalled that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated in its Q1 report released in April 2023 on Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that the ICT sector contributed more than nine percent of the total real GDP.
This figure has establishing an upward sector growth trajectory for the fourth time in four years with Q1 2020 and Q2 2021 being the two other instances.

The former Nigerian leader said: “West Africans have entrusted our new leader with an enormous responsibility, and it will be our task as citizens to support him to not let them down.
“I pray the Almighty will make his tenure as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government see to the restoration of ECOWAS as the bastion of  democracy, good governance and a leader in fighting terrorism and climate change on the continent.”

“If they had browsed through different sources, they will have seen reports of the former President having come back home and enjoying the company of his family.
“A single fake news in a newspaper has the capability to destroy a reputation built on years of hard work.”

President Tinubu Emerges ECOWAS  Chairman, Wants Action On Insecurity, Coup D’etat

President Bola Tinubu had emerged the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an unanimous endorsement, signposting the trust and confidence in him by his counterparts
The unanimous endorsement came up today July 9, at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
President Tinubu, who is the latest entrant into the exclusive club of Heads of State in West Africa, accepted the honour, on behalf of Nigeria, with a solemn pledge to bear the responsibility of the office and run an inclusive administration of the regional organisation.
The Nigerian leader, however, warned that the threat to peace in the sub-region had reached an alarming proportion with terrorism and emerging pattern of military takeover that now demand urgent and concerted actions.
He said that insecurity and creeping terrorism are stunting the progress and development of the region.
President Tinubu called for a collective action from member-states, pledging that under his leadership, frameworks would be harmonized to actualize the dreams of ECOWAS.
“On peace and security, the threat has reached an alarming level, and needs  urgent actions in addressing the challenges. Indeed, without a peaceful environment, progress and development in the region will continue to remain elusive. In this regard, we must remain committed to the utilisation of all regional frameworks at our disposal to address the menace of insecurity.”
President Tinubu noted that ECOWAS had developed a security architecture, which he said, “covers a wide range of areas that involved kinetic and non-kinetic operations, including preventive diplomacy. There is also the Regional Plan of Action on Fight against Terrorism 2020-2024 as well as the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force on Fight Against Terrorism.
“I will ensure that we immediately harmonize these plans and mobilize resources as well as the political will to towards the actualisation of the initiatives. As terrorists do not respect boundaries, we must work collectively to have an effective regional counterterrorism measure.”
On his emergence as Chairman on his first participation at the summit, having just started out as the elected leader of Nigeria, President Tinubu said that he was humbled and honoured by the trust to assume the leadership of the regional body, pledging his commitment to serve the interest of the community.
“Indeed, I’m humbled and honored by this trust, and want to assure you of my unalloyed commitment to provide the necessary leadership with dedication to serve the interest of the community.”
Nigerian President said that he would prioritize political stability, peace and security, regional economic integration and strengthening of the ECOWAS institutions, saying that democracy and good governance remain the abiding cornerstone of peace and sustainable development.
He took a look at the emerging pattern of coup d’etat in West Africa where soldiers have toppled the popular mandate of the people through barrel of guns, and charged ECOWAS to stand firm in defence of democracy.
“We must stand firm on democracy. There is no governance, freedom and rule of law without Democracy. We will not accept coup after coup in West Africa again. Democracy is very difficult to manage but it is the best form of government.
“There is no one here among us who did not campaign to be a leader. We didn’t give our soldiers resources, we didn’t invest in them, in their boots, in their training to violate the freedom of the people.
“To turn their guns against civil authorities is a violation of the principles upon which they were hired which is to defend the sovereignty of their nations. We must not sit in ECOWAS as toothless bulldogs,” the President warned.”
On political stability, he said: “You will all agree with me that democracy and good governance are the cornerstones of peace and sustainable development of every society. I’m fully committed to deepening democracy and good governance in the region.
“We must strengthen our democratic institutions and ensure the respect for human rights and the rule of law. I will enhance engagements with the countries in transition to ensure their quick return to democratic rule.”
The new ECOWAS Chairman called for improved private sector participation in the effort towards the economic development of Member States as well as their social integration.
“We would work  collectively to pursue an inclusive economic integration, which will be significantly private sector driven, in order to unlock the vast economic potentials of our region. We would actively promote trade, investment, and business cooperation among Member States by addressing the barriers impeding intra-regional trade, as well as creating a conducive business environment.
“We must encourage economic partnerships to raise the level of trade and investments in our region, hence facilitating employment creation and sustainable development and prosperity for our citizens.
“To this end, we must look inward and work with our regional economic facilitation platforms such as the Federation of West of West Africa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI) as well as ECOWAS Trade Organisation Network to attain our desired goals.”
President Tinubu assured the regional leaders of the immediate implementation of his vision for the body, declaring that:
“In furtherance of my vision for our region’s economic recovery and growth, Nigeria intends to convene an ECOWAS Extra Ordinary Summit on Trade and Investment in October 2023.
“The event will provide opportunity for Member States to showcase their potentials and encourage match-making, in order to evolve business cooperation among the various organized private sector within the region,” he added while calling for the strengthening of the institutions of the body.
“In the area of strengthening our Organisations Institutions and ensuring effective performance, we underscore the need for the conclusion of the on-going institutional reforms of the organization.
“Given that Community Levy remained the biggest source of generating funds to run our organization, we must ensure that our citizens being taxed must be positively impacted by the programmes and projects of ECOWAS. This is in line with the shift of ECOWAS slogan from “ECOWAS of State” to “ECOWAS of People.”
The Nigerian President appreciated the Authority of Heads of States and citizens of the Community for trusting him to lead the West African body.
“Your Excellencies, let me conclude by once again deeply appreciating the Authority of Heads of State and the citizens of the Community for your trust in me. Together, we can shape a brighter future of shared values of peace, democracy, and economic prosperity of our region.”
In his welcome address, the outgone ECOWAS Chairman and President of Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo saluted his fellow leaders for sustaining the vision of the organisation despite the global economic headwinds and trouble spots within the region.
He cited Mali, Burkina Faso and Republic of Guinea as countries where the constitutional order had been distorted while congratulating Nigeria and Sierra Leone for sustaining constitutional order through democratic process with the recent successful elections.
