43 Nigerian Nurses Indicted For Certificate Forgery In America

The Texas Board of Nursing in the United States has filed “formal charges” against 75 persons for fraudulently obtaining educational credentials.

The board released a 75-person probe list on their website over issues bordering on falsification of certificates, out of which 43 of the names were identified as nurses of Nigeria origin.

The people, who obtained the fake nursing credentials, were reported to have used them to qualify for the National Nursing Board Exam, information on the Board’s website regarding the investigation dubbed “Operation Nightingale” disclosed.

Upon successful completion of the board exam, the nursing applicants reportedly became eligible to obtain license in various states to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/VN).

A statement on the website disclosed that on January 25, 2023, the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) and law enforcement partners launched a multi-state coordinated law enforcement action to apprehend individuals engaged in a scheme to sell false and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts.

The statement reads in part: “The alleged scheme involved the selling of fake and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts obtained from accredited Florida-based nursing schools to Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/VN) candidates.

“This list will be updated continuously as the Board receives additional information about the fraudulent diploma/transcript scheme.”

The Board added that it is working, diligently, with all appropriate nursing regulatory bodies, nursing education program providers, accreditation bodies and authorities to detect, investigate and resolve these matters as quickly as possible, including seeking revocation of any licensure obtained through fraudulent means.

“Please note that formal charges are not a final disciplinary action, and a nurse is permitted to work, as a nurse, while formal charges are pending,” it added.

NCC Asks Mobile Network Operators To Start Implementing Harmonized Short Codes

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed mobile network operators (MNOs) to commence implementation of approved harmonized short codes (HSC) for providing certain services to telecom consumers in Nigeria.

A statement today, March 13, by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka said that the implementation of the HSC is in line with the NCC’s consumer-centric approach to telecoms regulation.

The statement said that the Commission has already set a deadline of May 17, 2023, for all mobile networks to fully migrate from hitherto diverse short codes to the harmonised codes.

It said that the use of harmonised short codes is aimed at achieving uniformity in common short codes across networks.

“This means that the code for checking airtime balance is the same across all mobile networks for the same function, irrespective of the network a consumer uses.

“With the new codes, the telecom consumers using the over 226 million active mobile lines in the country, can now use the same codes to access services across the networks.

“Consequently, under the new harmonised short codes regime, 13 common short codes have been approved by the Commission. They include the following codes: 300 to be used as the harmonised code for Call Centre/Help Desk on all mobile networks; 301 for voice Mail Deposit; 302 for Voice Mail Retrieval; 303 for Borrow Services; 305 for STOP Service; 310 for Check Balance, and 311 for Credit Recharge.

“Also, the common code for Data Plan across networks is now 312. In line with the new direction, 321 is for Share Services, while 323 is for Data Plan Balance. The code, 996, is now for Verification of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration/NIN-SIM Linkage. The code, 2442, is retained for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) unsolicited messaging complaint management, while the common code, 3232, is also retained for Porting Services, otherwise called Mobile Number Portability.

“The old and new harmonised short codes will run concurrently up until the May 17, 2023, when all networks are expected to have fully migrated to full implementation of the new codes.  The period between now and May 17, 2023 is provided by the NCC to enable telecom consumers to familiarise themselves with the new codes for various services.

“The initiative, which is in line with NCC’s regulatory modernisation programme, is essentially to make life much easier for telecom consumers, as it is now easier for Nigerians to memorise single codes for various services across all mobile networks they may be using, thereby improving consumer quality of experience (QoE).

“In addition, the new policy will provide opportunity for licensees in the Value-Added Services (VAS) segment of the telecoms sector to be able to use freed-up/old codes for other services, as well as enhance cohesive regulatory framework in keeping with world-class practices.”

I Was Supposed To Win 100% In Anambra; I Don’t Know Who’ll Vote Against Me – Obi

Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has said that he was supposed to have won 100 percent of vote cast in Anambra State in the February 25 Presidential election because nobody would vote against him.

Speaking today, on an Arise TV programme, Peter Obi said: “if you want to know whether I got 95% in Anambra State, come and go to Anambra with me. I don’t need Police. When I come out, you will see the reaction of the people.

“In fact, I am actually surprised that I did not get up to 100%. I’m telling you, because I don’t know who can be voting against me in Anambra State.

“In the South-East, it’s a similar situation. People know me, people know what I stand for, people know I have kept to my promises, people know I have kept to what I have said.

“It’s a simple thing. Is like people go about to say oh, he got votes in Lagos because of the Igbos. How many Igbos live in Lagos? Are there Igbos in Nasarawa? Are there Igbos in Plateau, are there Igbos in Abuja?

“In Rivers where you know that the Governor came out, kicked against me. If the real votes of Rivers were counted, I won. I have over 50 per cent of the votes, the other two parties were sharing the other.

“I won in Aso Rock. Would you say it is rigging? Which machinery do I have to rig? I have no councilor, no Local Government Chairman, I’m not in control of anything, not even the DPO. So which machinery will I use to rig?

“They are the ones who have believed in this. What they are doing is what I’m trying to change and those who are not certified with what I came for are part of the people we are trying to change.”

Story Of Fresh Plot Against Tinubu By CBN Governor Is Fake – CBN Spokesman

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin has described news making the rounds that the apex bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele is engaged in a fresh plan against the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as fake.

In a statement today, March 13, Dr. Abdulmumin said that the news, published in the Nation newspaper is false and malicious.

“We wish to inform members of the public that this story is completely false and malicious as the Governor does not know and has never met or even spoken with Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour either in person or through proxy.”

The spokesman said the CBN Governor is not a politician, advising detractors to allow Emefiele and his team to concentrate on their assignment.

“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to a story published in The Nation newspaper of Monday, March 13, 2023 edition, alleging that the Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele has launched a “fresh plot against President-elect.”

“The aforementioned story went further to allege that the Governor has made a certain amount of money available to a political aspirant ahead of March 18, 2023 gubernatorial poll.

“We wish to reiterate that the CBN Governor does not take part in politics and therefore urge anyone with contrary information to prove the Governor wrong should provide such facts.

“As such, the Governor and team at the CBN should be allowed to focus on their assigned job with a view to achieving statutory mandates of the bank.”

The newspaper had alleged that the CBN Governor had made “certain amount of money available to a political aspirant ahead of March 18, 2023 gubernatorial poll.”

Presidency Gives Pass Mark To February 25 Presidential Election, Commends Nigerians

Shehu Garba

The Presidency has described the Presidential election held on February 25 across the country as an improvement on the previous elections.

The election produced Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as President-elect, even as the opposition political party candidates and their supporters have condemned the election as the worst in the history of the country.

In a statement today, March 13, Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari said that no one has disputed the result of the election, except the candidates that fell short.

“The biggest and the most competitive presidential election in the history of Nigeria has been won by one man: Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The US State department congratulated President-elect Bola Tinubu of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC and the people of Nigeria on the outcome of the “competitive election.”

“British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, was also quick to congratulate the winner, on this victory. And so did many others in ECOWAS and the African Union.”

Garba Shehu said that although there were some delays and technical faults “in the process that we can learn from – as is the case in any election the world over but that the vote progressed and consolidated democracy in Nigeria.

“The integrity of the Electoral Act of 2022 was strengthened.  The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System cut out ghost, unauthorised or multiple votes to stem fraud. The election may not have been pluperfect, but due to the steps the government has taken, it is an improvement on previous polls.

“That achievement should not be overlooked. The next step is for the Election Commission to ensure transparency in collation.”

He said that adverse reactions as received from some quarters are themselves a part of the learning process for everyone, saying: “elsewhere, the world had been treated to epic lies, obfuscation, jingoism and hate, and told by global media to expect a different outcome. Nigerians shocked the world by refusing religious hatred and sectarian politics.

“All true friends of Nigeria should join the people in proceeding forward for sustainable peace.

“APC victory in the presidential election, underscored by the nationwide wave of support in the National Assembly results is clear mandate for the party to retain power for another term of four years.

“This election is an improvement on past elections and due credit should be given to the government and people of this country.

He thanked former ambassadors, Mark Green and Johnnie Carson, along with other foreign observers, for their concerns over the logistics of the election in their work as observers on the National Democratic Institute/International Republican Institute Election Observation Missions.

How Late Senator Afegbua Influenced Women Into Politics – Oluremi Tinubu Recalls

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has expressed sadness over the death of the first elected female Senator, Franca Afegbua, saying that her contributions to Nigeria and the womenfolk will never be forgotten.

She described Seantor Afegbua who died on Sunday at 80 in her Benin-City home in Edo State, as a trailblazer and quintessential lawmaker who led the way in showing that women can participate in politics and make meaningful impacts.

In a statement she personally signed, Senator Tinubu said: “I received with shock the news of the demise of Chief Franca Afegbua, Nigeria’s first elected female Senator.

“Senator Afegbua made history in October 1983 when she was elected to the Senate to represent the people of Bendel North on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), defeating John Umolu of the Unity Party of Nigeria, the then ruling party in the defunct Bendel State.

“From being a widely celebrated beautician to breaking the glass ceiling and showing the Nigerian women that they can participate in politics and make meaningful impact, Senator Afegbua was a trailblazer who paved the way for others including me.

“Although her tenure in the Senate was cut short by the return to military rule in December 1983, she spent the rest of her life being an active citizen, advocating adequate representation of women in politics and governance.

“Senator Afegbua’s contributions to Nigeria and the womenfolk will never be forgotten. She embodied every quality women need to thrive in Nigeria’s political space, and her wisdom and guidance will be sorely missed.

“I commiserate with her family, the people of Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area where she hailed from, and the governments and people of Edo and Delta states. I join others to pray for the repose of her soul and for God to comfort all the loved ones she left behind.”

Old Notes: Osun Gov, Adeleke, Decries Maltreatment Of His People By Banks

The Governor of Osun State , Senator Ademola Adeleke has decried the maltreatment of residents of the state by banks which refused to collect old currency notes even after paying customers with old notes.
In a statement today, March 12 by his spokesman, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the Governor narrated the many complaints of bank customers who accused the banks of refusing deposits of old notes and the attendant negative consequences on the populace.
Governor Adeleke said that he has received several calls from Bank customers across the state, complaining of deliberate refusal of banks to collect old notes.
He said such attitude is creating serious economic complications for residents of the state.
“For the banks to issue old notes and refuse to accept old notes as deposit is highly unacceptable.”
Governor Adeleke called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to direct the banks operating in the state to correct the anomalies.
“The state director of the CBN is specifically requested to direct the banks to halt this unhealthy practice.
“If banks will not accept old notes as deposits, they must stop issuing old notes for withdrawal. The current pain being inflicted on our people must stop.”

6 EFCC Senior Officers Enter Commission’s Trap Over Alleged Forgery

EFCC Officers
Six senior officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have entered the Commission’s trap over alleged falsification of their age records; dates of birth.
This was believed to have been detected during a promotion interview for senior EFCC operatives recently.
A credible source said that the officers allegedly falsified their ages in an attempt to confer an ‘unfair advantage’ to themselves over their colleagues, who also participated in the interview exercise.
“The offence of the six senior officers bordered on forgery and conferring unfair advantage to themselves.
“And they did so by altering their dates of birth in their personal files,” the source said.
According to the source, who asked not to be named, the identified senior operatives of the Commission involved in the age racketeering were hoping that they would get their years in the service extended, beyond their retirement ages.
Checks indicate that some senior EFCC officers who were discovered to have altered their birth records in the past were punished with demotions to lower levels or outright retirement from the service.
According to EFCC law, any person involved in forgery shall be sanctioned and prosecuted for falsifying/altering official records for personal gain or any other offence.
Another top management  officer of the Commission said: “Our Chairman, Mr. Bawa is more concerned about protecting the integrity of our Commission and its staff and he will surely be in a dilemma if such allegations are established against some of our best staff.
“This is because, some of the accused senior officers are very good at their job and they did not forge certificates of qualifications and experience. In addition, the so-called age falsification is yet to be established against any one of them as they are still very innocent.”

If I Were Tinubu, By Segun Adeleye

Sen. Bola Tinubu
With the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the president-elect, Nigeria has taken another bold step forward in its democratic journey since May 29, 1999 when the election Chief Olusegun Obasanjo ended multiple decades of military rule that began in 1966 with interruption only by a brief period of democracy from 1979 to 1983.

But why Tinubu? Of all the three major presidential candidates, he was the one whose past was more shrouded with controversies. From disputes over his age, educational qualifications, where he was born, past business deals including that he once settled with the US government and forfeited about $460,000 with court documents showing that he was a bagman for two Chicago heroin dealers in the early 1990s.

But if not Tinubu, who? The other two leading candidates have not been reported to be saints either. Atiku Abubakar of PDP is tainted with an unaccountable wealth for someone that was a civil servant who even admitted that he was into importing and selling cars when he was supposed to be working for government. As for Peter Obi of the Labour Party, he had been accused of investing $30million of Anambra State funds in a company owned by his family when he was the governor, among other allegations.

Going into the 2023 poll, Nigerians were presented with the options of the devil or the deep blue sea. But the questions are, are there still saints in the land?

Or have we ever been ruled by saints, will we ever be ruled by saints and is there anywhere in the world where saints are calling the shot?

Not in any way to justify that bad names over good ones should be given a room in our polity and society, Nigeria has been a dysfunctional entity since its creation to make it extremely difficult or impossible not to be lawless or sinner. When you are pushed to the wall by extreme situations, the natural thing will be to first survive, after all the natural law uphold that if a man steal only to quench his hunger, he should be speared.

It has always been a contest between sin and survival (SS) with only one’s conscience that can be the unbiased judge, for any outside judges will be hypocrites who are judging from their comfort moments, forgetting that their secrets which may not be in the news as corruptions are equally sins.

For instance, a dad with a terribly sick daughter got stranded in a  Lagos traffic. He had to drive through one-way to make it to the hospital and save his child. He violated the traffic law for survival; a youth spent five years at home after secondary school, taking JAMB over and over to get admission into a university. When he eventually did, he had to spend 10 years for a course that should be four or five years because of perpetual schools closure due to ASUU strikes. By the time he left school, he was already 30 years old, and the few job vacancies available were asking for youth below 25 years or lower. He was compelled to cut his age by seven years to give him a change to survive in his country; a man had been pushing a business in a federal ministry to the point of approval in Abuja when he was asked to double the figures as the take home for the officials. It was the only condition for him to get the job. He played ball and would live to argue with his conscience that what he got was for his job with the added tip for the officials not his problem or sin. But he could have walked away to look for another jobs. Yes, he could have walked away to hunger and hopelessness; a nursing mother obeyed a government directive that the old naira notes from her business were being faced out and should be returned to the bank. She did so only to be denied the new notes which were not even available. She had two options to either approach the POS operators and purchase N5000 new notes with N1000 or remain a good citizen and go home to feed her children with excuse and water.

According to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), only 41 million pay taxes in Nigeria out of the over 200 million population. Those that are not paying will have justifications for not doing so; justifications that will make it not to be sin, justification that will make it not to be corruption.

Nigeria is an abnormal society that hardly anyone from other countries can imagine. It perfectly fit the saying that only a mad man will behave normally in an abnormal situation.

Many prophesies had trailed the 2023 presidential election with some from popular pastors going over the bar, but despite that, not a few Nigerians believe that the hand of God was missing from the election of Tinubu. There was a WhatsApp  post where someone strongly pushed the God’s factor, saying; Tinubu lost his state, so he won’t brag that he won because of Lagos; he lost Kano so Granduje won’t brag that I made him president; he lost Kaduna so El Rufai won’t think he won because of his radical stand; he lost Katsina so President Buhari won’t think he won because he anointed him; he lost Sokoto the seat of the caliphate so they won’t call him the Northern candidate  or the Khalifa; he lost Osun where some say he really came from; he lost Plateau the state of APC campaign DG. Yet he won the overall simple majority votes and made the constitutionally required 25 percent cut in more than 25 states of the federation. What this observer didn’t add is that Tinubu still won despite the extremely oppressive government policies of naira redesign and fuel scarcity during an election period which would have made even the most meekly souls voted against the ruling party.

But in all these, what do we learn from history? Something happened in the old Israel after the reign of King Solomon from about 970 to 931 BCE. Having married 700 princesses and 300 concubines, Solomon at his old age sinned against God as he was led into the worship of foreign gods and became unfaithful to God. And the God verdict came; that he will take the kingdom away from him and give it to one of his servants. This later brought about the enthronement of Jeroboam, a servant of King Solomon, and the son of a widow who became the first king of the divided northern kingdom of Israel.

Now fast-forward to 1999 to 2007 when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s president. To say Obasanjo was specially favoured by God would be an understatement as he had also served as a military head of state from 1976 to 1979. I’ve come across a story that he was specially favoured by God because his father had at his early age donated Obasanjo school fees to complete a local church project. At the time when Obasanjo was the president, Tinubu, the now president-elect was the governor of Lagos.

Obasanjo despite being a democratic president then ruled like a maximum leader with disregard for the rule of law as he would do anything possible to crush the opposition. In 2005, he seized funds belonging to local governments in Lagos State under Tinubu and held on to it despite court rulings against his action. There was also the Lagos armoury explosion on 27 January 2002 which was believed to have killed at least 1,100 people and displaced over 20,000, with many thousands injured or homeless. In the wake of the disaster the then President Obasanjo who visited the scene told agitated crowd that: “I didn’t need to be here to see anything because my being here will not solve anything. Shut up. I took the opportunity of being here to see what could be done.”

What could be more tormenting and painful for Obasanjo to be alive and see the Tinubu who he once trampled upon as the president-elect of his conquered estate? One can understand his agitation, agony and impatience when the election result was yet to be declared, when he said the exercise should be canceled. Quoting him, he said, “Your Excellency, President Buhari Muhammadu, tension is building up and please let all elections that do not pass the credibility and transparency test be cancelled and be brought back with areas where elections were disrupted for next Saturday, March 4, 2023, and BVAS and Server officials be changed. To know which stations or polling units were manipulated, let a Committee of INEC staff and representatives of the four major political parties with the Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association look into what must be done to have hitch-free elections next Saturday.”

Going forward, it’s instructive to note that comparing the story of Solomon to Jeroboam with Obasanjo to Tinubu has thrown up many lesions to be learnt.

Between Solomon and Jeroboam was his son Rehoboam who became king and foolishly threatened to make life more difficult for the people of the land. He first approached the elders who advised that, “If you will be a servant to this people, be considerate of their needs and respond with compassion, work things out with them, they’ll end up doing anything for you.” But he rejected this counsel and took that of the young men he’d grown up with who were now currying his favor. They asked him to tell them that: “My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. If you think life under my father was hard, you haven’t seen the half of it. My father thrashed you with whips; I will beat you bloody with chains!”

Also between Obasanjo and Tinubu were Umaru Yar Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari and missed opportunities with nothing to show that any lesson was learnt.

The President-elect seems not yet to be carried away by his new status going by his utterances so far. In his acceptance speech, he said: “I want to be your servant and not a leader.  Whether you are BATfied, Artikulated, Obidient, or Kwankwasied, or any other thing, I want to serve you. The youths, I hear you clearly. We would work together. I will pay attention to your education. You shall be creative. Your four year course will be four years. Your universities will have autonomy.”

But the question is for how long will he remain sane before been negatively influenced and become power intoxicated?

Where will Tinubu seek his counsel and whose advices will he take? Will he seek for wisdom afar and who will he attribute is righteousness to?

“Take away the wicked from the presence of the king and his throne will be established in righteousness.”

Is it too early to say that those speaking for Tinubu after his election seem to be saying the opposite of what he had promised and this can only make one to imagine what those who spoke for Rehoboam said before he became power drunk?

The media and communication team of the APC in a combative press conference on March 3, 2023 in a respond to Atiku and Obi separate press conferences said: “The combination of the disgruntled youths, the ethnic champions, and commercial clerics were the reason Obi thought he could win a presidential election in Nigeria.”

I don’t think we saw any disgruntled youths that voted during the election, but those that were frustrated and angered that their destinies have been mortgaged by the so called leaders.

The youths had spoken twice now. First with EndSARS and now through the 2023 election. They have the largest population and they are the ones that will elect the president after this dispensation!

If I were Tinubu, I will consult the elders and take to their advice so that history will not repeat itself as seen in the cases of Rehoboam and Obasanjo that lost their relevancies and kingdoms.

Significance Of Tinubu Visit To Elumelu Video, By Yushau A. Shuaib

After the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the former governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu as the Nigerian president-elect, ethnic tension and rivalry ensued between supporters of the presidential candidates.

This anxiety has been more palpable and evident in the home state of Tinubu, where his party lost the presidential election to the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, who is an Igbo from Anambra State.

The aftermath of the election has triggered the latent ethnic rivalries between the Yorubas – largely aborigines or relatives to natives of the space – and their Igbos neighbours – who are mostly from the South-East, in what could be considered a supremacy tussle over the political control of Lagos State.

In this fairly volatile situation, many of the Yorubas appear to want the incumbent governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to be reelected as governor of the State, while a seeming majority of the Igbos are eager to replace him with the candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, whose mother and wife are Igbos, despite his father being Yoruba.

It was in the thick of these ethnic and political tensions that the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu released a video of a visit to his house by the President-Elect, Asiwaju Tinubu in Lagos.

In an Instagram post through which this video has been disseminated, Elumelu writes: “Last (Tuesday) night, I was honoured to receive the Nigerian President-elect at my home. We discussed ways in which the incoming administration must empower and support our immensely talented Nigerian youth. We have so much young potential to unleash.”

The business mogul, who is also the Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the Transcorp Group, is known for flaunting his celebrity status with powerful connections. Elumelu has created a niche for himself and a strong social media presence, through which he exhibits good-natured humour and sartorial sophistication to his teeming trans-generational followers.

With his pan-African Tony Elumelu Foundation, the banker operates a business model he describes as Africapitalism, which is anchored on building a critical mass of young entrepreneurs to promote social and economic wealth, while also developing the communities in which businesses operate. Importantly, it is hinged on a humanitarian and philanthropic approach in which the general welfare is prioritised, as profits are sought and made towards doing good to humanity.

Therefore, the release of the video at a time that ethnocentric acrimonies have been brewing among two major ethnic nationalities in the country, is from all indications a deliberate communication plot.

Rather than considering the video released from an ambush marketing perspective, it is more of a publicity stunt that has elements of public relations (PR) messaging about the mutual relationship between entrepreneurs in business and politicians in government.

The relationship between the people in business and those governments can be understood through a classic distinction between the politics of support and the politics of power. While the politics of support is concerned with rallying to secure an electoral majority that leads to winning and which can be funded by people in business, the politics of power relates to implementing programmes that can ultimately benefit the people in business.

The video is very clear and considerate of the current mood in the nation, about the aftermath of the presidential election. It starts with Elumelu welcoming Tinubu to his home and referring to him as: “This man with 10 lives. The Last man standing and strong man.” Tinubu quickly and jokingly replies by saying: “I am still standing.”

The banker then turns to his left, where Seyi, Tinubu’s son, is and jokes that that the younger fellow is wearing the same kind of dress as his father. He then adds: “Seyi you must be very proud of your father as he is proud of you. You are a good man, Seyi.”

While exchanging pleasantries in the sitting room, Elumelu introduces Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu to Tinubu: “This is the CEO of Tony Elumelu Foundation. She is in charge of the Foundation. So, if you need a young female Minister to come and change the women focus, I can loan her to you….”

Critics who attack Elumelu for hosting the President-Elect fail to realise that Elumelu is not an Igbo from the South-East but one from the South-South state of Delta. An average Delta Igbo is likely to be found and excelling in the public service, academia or in the business world, rather than in partisan politics. The likes of Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Jim Ovia, Louis Edozie, and Godwin Emefiele, among others, from Delta State would rather mind their businesses than engage in partisan politics, although as in most situations, there will always be a few exceptions.

As mentioned earlier, it is not difficult to see that the video is deliberate and designed to achieve some strategic purpose on the delicate relationship between politics and business. Rather than an ambush marketing communication tool, whereby a promoter “capitalises” on an event to position for maximum exposure, while gaining advantage over his or her competitors, the video is essentially a publicity stunt designed to attract the public’s attention to the salient message of the sponsor or promoter.

The video deflects the attention of citizens from the nascent ethnic acrimony in the country and reinforces the fact that serious business people and politicians are not concerned about ethnic chauvinism and religious bigotry. Profiting making and service to humanity are their major priorities.

The video may possibly reawaken warring parties to the fact that after the election, life must go on, and we might as well not destroy relationships necessary for our progress due to surges of emotional connection with identity, as this past presidential election seems to have provoked in many.

More importantly, we all need to focus more on establishing and sustaining relationships built on trust, confidence and harmony towards a better, peaceful and prosperous society.

Meanwhile, some of the takeaways from the video is the fact that Tinubu is truly a Lagos City Boy who is simple, connected to his various constituencies and pragmatic, as evident in his paying a personal visit to worthy allies, despite what some might think are the sectional sentiments or ethnic and religious backgrounds of his host.

It also signifies Tinubu’s inclination to partner with those who can add concrete values towards his lofty aspiration of youth empowerment, considering the records of the Elumelu Foundation in this regard. It buttresses the fact that Tinubu’s allies are across Nigeria and in every sector, as major players who have supported his campaign, both morally and financially.

The Tinubu-Elumelu video has succeeded in its publicity endeavour by staging a newsworthy event that has attracted public attention. By staging the event in his house, the promoter (Elumelu) has also successfully exercised firm control over what the media could report.

In a nutshell, as a PR practitioner, I can say that the Elumelu’s video has curated the major elements of effective publicity exploits, including having great news value, coupled with video and sound bite opportunities choroegraphed primarily for media exposure. In addition, it has gained prominence, and human interest to embody the features of effective public relations, which include reputation management, media (control) management and possibly crisis management, in the very subtle way it explores the soft power of relationships to de-fuse ongoing political situations.

I can see Tinubu hitting the ground running after May 29.
