Tinubu To People Of Rivers State: Ensure Next Election Is Hitch-Free, Devoid Of Violence

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has appealed to the people of Rivers State, particularly youths, to ensure that the next election is hitch-free and devoid of violence.

“Let us work hard and build a nation, a nation where peace, unity, stability, joy and happiness will reign supreme. We should be working together not killing one another.”

Addressing an impressive rally at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, the State capital, Asiwaju Tinubu stressed without peace and unity, the country cannot progress and achieve prosperity.

He promised to work to ensure increased security in the state and South-South region, and provide effective protection for oil installations in the region.

The APC candidate paid special tribute to Abubakar Asari Dokubo who he described as his friend and brother.

“Asari Dokubo is a very bold and courageous worker. Brave and honest. Since I encountered him, he has been very consistent and straightforward.”

Meanwhile the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has condemned the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for reneging on its promise to field a Southern candidate and work toward a Southern president in 2023 after power would have resided in the North for eight years.

“PDP does not know the essence of promise. When you make a promise,  you keep it. On our part, we are honourable people. We have a full-fledged Southerner as our candidate. What the PDP failed to do, we have done. What the party failed to give the South, APC has given the South. So as Southerners, please the people of Rivers, play your part by voting APC. Let your vote speak for you.”

At the rally, the APC flag was handed over to the governorship candidate in the state, Tonye Cole.

Cole promised the people a new government that is responsive to their yearning, urging them to vote the party at all levels.

The rally was attended among others by APC Vice Presidential Candidate Senator Kashim Shettima, Governors Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) and Babajide Sanwo-olu (Lagos) as well as former Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi and his former Edo State counterpart, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Will Buhari Go Without Rescuing Leah Sharibu? By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye

As President Muhammadu Buhari prepares himself for a happy return to his comfortable country home in Daura, Katsina State, after nearly eight years in office, a 19-year old, tender, innocent girl named Leah Sharibu remains a hapless, pathetic, unspeakably traumatized captive of Boko Haram terrorists, obviously, under the most dehumanizing conditions.

Given what has, reportedly, been the horrible experiences of young, beautiful girls like Leah who have been captured by these terrorists, one is really scared to imagine the extent of savage violations she might have been subjected to for over five years now! It is heartbreaking that she hardly gets mentioned again these days, especially, by those whose job it is to rescue and bring her home to her grieving parents and siblings!

Has Nigeria woefully failed Leah Sharibu then? Has President Buhari who may have her age mates as grandchildren forgotten her? Has he given up hope of ever bringing her home again to her heartbroken parents? Will he leave her in the horrible den of terrorists as he happily retires to the comfort his home and family in Daura in the next few months?

What happened to Buhari’s very loud, almost 5-year old promise to rescue her quickly? Or even his firm pledge during the campaigns for his first term that he would end the Boko Haram menace in six months and ensure the freedom of all their captives? What did he have in mind when he was making those promises? Has he exhausted all his ideas and strategies for ending terrorism and banditry? What in his assessment was the result of his efforts in this regard after nearly eight years in office? Or was he merely dropping those campaign promises (just to get the people’s votes) after which he hurriedly forgot them as soon as he won the election and settled into the limitless comfort of presidential office in Nigeria?

Leah was among the 110 students of the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, abducted by Boko Haram terrorists on February 19, 2018. She was only 14 then. When in March of the same year news broke that the terrorists had brought back the girls with the same fanfare they had taken them away – like kids going on an excursion, Leah’s parents rejoiced like the other parents, and rushed down to embrace their beloved child and take her home. But on discovering that her child was not released with her classmates, Leah’s mother, Rebecca Sharibu, fainted. The shock was too much for her.

Speaking of her experience later, she said, weeping profusely: “My heart was broken when I searched through the released girls and could not set my eyes on my dear daughter, Leah”.

Leah’s equally traumatized father, Nathaniel Sharibu, could only sorrowfully plead that serious effort should be deployed to bring his daughter back: “Nigeria must do all within its powers to bring back my daughter the same way they did to others.” Now, after nearly five years and no heartwarming news had come in about his beloved daughter, the only girl in the family, his conclusion would probably be that he merely sang ballads to the deaf!

The terrorists had refused to release Leah because she is a Christian and had refused to renounce her faith and convert to Islam as they demanded. That was her unpardonable offence which she has continued to pay dearly for. Her heart must have bled as she watched the other girls go home, but she remained firm in her resolve not to trade her faith for her freedom. She is a heroine of the Christian faith.

Now, how does Leah see Nigeria and her leaders today? An American boy will look you straight in the face and declare that he is ready to die for America any day, anywhere, and he means every word he uttered. Same goes for youths from several other countries. Why? They know very well that should any of them be in trouble anywhere in the world, their country would spare no resources and efforts to rescue them. Their leaders are patriotic and humane and sincerely love and care for the people they are governing. They tower far above those callous and selfish leaders who only remember hapless captives like Leah Sharibu when they want to use their predicament to score cheap political points!

On Saturday, June 23, 2018, a young football team in Thailand, made up of 12 boys between the ages of 11 and 16, went missing with their coach in a Northern Thailand cave. The world stood in awe as their country went all out to trace and bring them home. Nobody bothered to ask why they embarked on such an adventure. That was no longer necessary. The most important thing was their safety. The whole country and their leaders became united in their resolve to rescue the boys and gave themselves no rest until they were found and brought out to safety. The dedication and concern of the Thai leaders aroused the sympathy of the world which moved in to help.

In saner countries, the worsening insecurity in Nigeria and the fact that many of our citizens are either in captivity or brutally displaced are enough reasons to inspire in Gen Buhari the noble decision to stand down from office. But in these parts, people seek power not to serve the citizenry, but largely to wallow in the glamour and luxury of the office. So, even if they run the country completely aground, they would still remain there even if to play the undertaker.  The verdict of history holds no attraction for them.

So, as Buhari prepares to retire to his comfortable home and into the loving arms of his wife and children, Leah Sharibu’s hot tears continue to flow in the terrorist’s den. For five excruciating years, she must have looked out each day for the rescue team that is yet to even take off. Sense of loneliness and abandonment has remained her daily sources of additional torments.  Maybe, the Buhari regime had wished that we forgot Leah and moved on – like they seem to have done with the Chibok girls. It is now clear that the horrible plight of the Chibok girls was merely a very effective tool for winning the 2015 election, and nothing more!

Nigeria is today bleeding at all corners. The universities are still battling to recover from the eight months’ clearly avoidable strike by lecturers even as the government strives to weaken the toiling hands of the teachers with very punitive decisions on their welfare.

Since the past few months, Nigerians have been groaning under  one of the worst, seemingly intractable petrol crisis in this country that has unleashed overwhelming hardship on the populace, a situation that has now been horribly compounded by the unavailability of the newly redesigned naira notes for the common man to purchase food and services even at very prohibitive prices.

Is this the kind of badly battered Nigeria that Buhari is leaving behind after eight years as president? Very Pathetic and sad!

Group Expresses Concern On Implications Of Naira, Fuel Scarcity To Forthcoming Elections

A group, Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI), has expressed concern on the implications of the current naira and fuel scarcity to the forthcoming general elections across the country.

The President of the group and former Inspector General of Police, Muhammed D. Abubakar, in a statement today, February 14, said that the prevailing economic difficulties in the country have been aggravated by additional tension, occasioned by perennial fuel scarcity and cashless policy.

The statement, signed by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, retired Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, quoted M.D Abubakar as advising the government to find practical solutions to the challenges before the general elections.

He called on the government to ensure that an enabling environment is created for Nigerians in all parts of the country to freely exercise their franchise.

Abubakar stressed that reliable elections and a smooth handover of power would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and help it reach its full potential.

He further called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intensify efforts towards a credible and violence-free election in all parts of the country. The former IGP condemned all forms of electoral malpractice, including intimidation, vote-buying and election violence.

He urged all contestants for the various elective positions to eschew violence and money politics and uphold global best practices and focus on the issues of security, welfare, and economic prosperity of Nigerians, over and above personal and pecuniary interests. He also urged politicians to follow the rules and respect the results of elections and advised voters to choose candidates based on their skills and honesty rather than putting their children’s and grandchildren’s futures at risk for small sums of money or ephemeral items.

He said that, as part of its efforts to promote credible elections, AANI will observe the forthcoming elections across the country, adding that the group will not be biased when it comes to watching elections and will do its job as a national organisation with the utmost dedication and impartiality, just like it did during the last elections. He recalled that AANI had held a national conference on national unity in September 2022, which came up with far-reaching recommendations for implementation by the government and other stakeholders, adding that the association is always available for partnership and further collaboration to enhance national unity and cohesion.

He rated the Association as the foremost national association of a diverse group of eminent Nigerian men and women that cut across professional, socio-cultural, economic, and political affiliations in the country, trained on the rudiments of policy formulation and strategy and have been contributing to national development through its mission: “To serve as a think tank to the government of Nigeria,” vision:”To promote the noble ideas of a better society,” and the motto: “Towards a better society.”

He said that the association is the most important think tank for Nigeria’s federal, state, and local governments.

“It has been contributing objectively to the national conversation on many issues that affect Nigeria’s growth and development and give the government the right recommendations and implementation strategies.”

Watch Your Tongue, DSS Warns Political Gladiators, Their Spokespersons

Spokesperson of the DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned political gladiators and their spokespersons to watch what they say in the process of current political campaigns.

“Political parties and their media managers are advised to apply restraint in their utterances and public communication engagements prior to and after the general elections.

“This is to avoid heating up the polity and evoking tendencies that could lead to violent reactions as well as undermine peace and order.”

In a statement today, February 14, the DSS spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said that the Service actually invited one the mouthpiece of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Femi Fani-Kayode  to its National Headquarters, Abuja on 13th February, 2023.

“The invitation was in respect of an investigation of some of his allegations and insinuations relating to issues relevant to National Security.

“Chief Fani-Kayode faced a Panel which interviewed him on the subject matter. “Afterwards, the Service granted him administrative bail and directed that he makes routine returns to the Office with effect from Wednesday, 15th February, 2023 till otherwise. The investigation, however,  continues.”

With Kano Centre, Nigerian Pushes For Data Sovereignty, Better Security, By Garba Shehu

With a clear vision of the importance of Data Centres to Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, President Muhammadu Buhari recently commissioned the Kano Data Centre, put in place by the ever-achieving Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, constructed by Huawei, a leading information and communications technology infrastructure provider.

It is an enormously significant project which has got little or no public attention.

Experts say that it will save Nigeria billons of Naira a year due to power outages and other disturbances. Data centres eliminate a portion of this loss.

A data centre is a space or building used to “house networked computer systems or servers and associated systems such as telecom systems and networking components (switches, routers). They are used to organize, process and store large amounts of data.

A centre like the one just commissioned provides reliable data storage on a massive scale without the glitches of portable technology.

The Kano centre has (2.2petabyte storage capacity). A petabyte is a unit of information equal to one thousand million bytes. This one, alongside the Abuja Data Centre with 1.7 petabyte storage capacity will jointly provide a national digital sovereign cloud. These two will greatly improve the modernization of the communications infrastructure in Nigeria, create a favourable external investment environment, enhance the communication efficiency between the government and the public, and improve the satisfaction of government services (improve e-governance).

Most importantly, Kano will Provide full backup services for the primary Data centre facility in Abuja.

The Kano Prefab DC solution includes Huawei’s intelligent power supply and distribution technology such as iPower, the iCooling and intelligent thermal management solution that improves power usage effectiveness (PUE) with a centralized smart management system (iManager). These innovations help to build a datacentre solution that is simple, green, intelligent, and secure.

It will provide full-fledged availability zone which allows for independent operation and regional cloud computing service delivery. Its containerized design provides for high scalability.

The infrastructure has a capacity to provide at least 120 direct jobs and huge number of indirect jobs.

The Kano Data Centre Project is a major component of the phase 2 of the National Information and Communications Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB) Project. It is strategically located in the capital city of Kano State, North West, Nigeria and a model of the envisioned full-fledged National Data Centre concepts that support the Data Sovereignty aspirations of the Nigerian Government.

In 2019 and 2020, the Nigerian government promulgated the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy 2020-2030 and the National Broadband Plan 2020-2025 to accelerate digital transformation and digital economy development. The National ICT Infrastructure Backbone Phase II Project is one of the most important projects for implementing Nigeria’s national ICT strategy, especially on Broadband penetration.

Following the activation of the NICTIB phase 2 project in November of 2020, the final detailed design of the facility was embarked on and received the approval of stakeholders.

The Government of Kano State, in appreciation of the strategic impact of such proposed state-of-the-art facility, allocated a befitting plot of land for its development within the Nasarawa GRA.

Manufacturing activities and mobilisation to site commenced in May 2021.

The facility is composed of a 600sqm Tier 4 datacentre with capacity of 72 rack cabinets (66 IT racks and 6 network racks) and fully equipped cloud infrastructure of 2.2PB storage capacity, 6,144vCPUs and 9TB memory; a regional office building of 3 floors, with private and open office spaces, Network Operations Center, Training facilities, meeting rooms and colocation room with a total of 900sqm of space; and Comprehensive power systems of 33KVA utility source, dedicated transformers (1250 kVA capacity) and backup generators (600 kW capacity).

The cost of this project is put at USD 21,402,336.09 as captured on a commercial BoQ (including Abuja DC IT equipment of $11,562,590.83) that was recommended by BPP (2016) and approved by the Federal Executive Council, FEC (2017). The final approval and implementation started in 2021 with zero variation. Specifically, the Kano Datacentre infrastructure and IT equipment cost a total of $9,839,745.26. The Initial design of the Project (Data Centre & Office Building) was for 24months. However, it was technically completed in nine months, commencing in May 2021 to March 2022.

Under the Buhari administration, the Information, Communication and Technology sector (ICT) has accelerated the diversification of the economy and contributed an unprecedented 18.44 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Minister Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami calls it the “New Oil” because the contribution of the sector to the GDP has risen above oil. The continuous growth of the digital economy depends on large-capacity and highly reliable ICT infrastructure. Data is the core asset of the new era. Only a large-capacity and highly reliable infrastructure can ensure data security in Nigeria and store key government data and people’s livelihood data.

On this path, the Ministry of Communications and the Digital Economy has been working tirelessly. The establishment of the Galaxy Backbone Kano data centre will be a key milestone in this path. It will greatly accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation, provide powerful technical facilities for the booming digital economy, create a favourable external investment environment, improve the efficiency of communication between the government and the public, and improve the adoption of government services.

The project was coordinated by Galaxy Backbone Limited, and constructed by Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited, a leading ICT company that has been In Nigeria and a strong partner to the nation’s ICT sector. The project makes Kano the largest date storage hub in the country and it is expected that it will pave the way for greater ICT contributions to Nigeria digital and overall economy.

Nigeria Moves To Attain Upper Middle-Income Status, Tagged “Nigeria Agenda 2050”

The National Economic Council (NEC) has endorsed “Nigeria Agenda 2050,” designed to take the country through to Upper Middle-Income Country and subsequently to the status of High-Income countries by the year 2050..
The Agenda was presented at the NEC meeting today, February 14, by the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning to State Governors and other members of NEC, including federal ministers.
Speaking after the presentation and discussion by Council members, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who presided over the meeting, said that the plan “captures a lot of the expectations for Nigeria in the future and hopefully implementation which is key if effectively done.”
this was even as the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba said that the Federal Government has taken unprecedented steps in ensuring the operationalization of the plan, especially with the inauguration of the Steering Committee of the National Development Plan by the Vice President.
Professor Osinbajo had earlier today, inaugurated the Steering Committee of the National Development Plan.
On 9th September, 2020 the President inaugurated the National Steering Committee (NSC) for the preparation of the Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) 2021 – 2025 and Nigeria Agenda 2050.
Highlights of the Nigeria Agenda 2050 as presented to NEC is as follows:
*Nigeria Agenda 2050 is formulated against the backdrop of several subsisting development challenges in the country.
*These challenges include low, fragile, and non-inclusive economic growth; high population growth rate, pervasive insecurity, limited diversification, macroeconomic and social instability, low productivity and high import dependence.
*Nigeria Agenda 2050 is a perspective plan designed to transform the country into an “Upper-Middle Income Country”, with a significant improvement in per capita income.
*The plan aims to fully engage all resources, reduce poverty, achieve social and economic stability.
*It also targets developing a mechanism for achieving a sustainable environment consistent with global concerns about climate change.
*The plan therefore presents the road map for accelerated, sustained and broad-based growth and provides broad frameworks for reducing unemployment, poverty, inequality, and human deprivation.
Agenda 2050 is to help Nigeria attain her desire to successfully join the group of upper middle-income countries and subsequently to high-income group.

This requires significant improvement in the country’s per capita GDP which will be powered by rapid and sustained economic growth.

Nigeria’s long-term ambition is to improve its per capita GDP from about US$2,084.05 in 2020 to US$6,223.23 in 2030 and US$33,328.02 in 2050, with rapid and sustained economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction.

The Nigeria Agenda 2050 projects annual average real GDP growth of 7.0 percent.

The real growth rate of the GDP of the first medium-term NDP 2021-2025 on average will be 4.65 percent and this will increase to 8.01 percent in the second NDP; subsequently, it is expected to increase to 8.43 percent in the third.

Consequently, the number of full time jobs created will be roughly 165 million during the Agenda period to spur poverty reduction.

The number of people in poverty will decline from the roughly 83 million in 2020 to about 47.8 million in 2025 and to 2.1 million by 2050, thus taking a significant segment of the population out of poverty.

2023 Elections: APC is “Battle-Ready,” Constitutes Legal Team To Fight All Cases

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is battle-ready to face all legal issues that will arise from the 2023 general elections across the country.

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, today, February 13, inaugurated the party’s Legal Compliance Committee, with responsibility for more than 1,400 Federal and State elective positions in polls holding later this month and the next.

The committee will be coordinated by the APC National Legal Adviser, Ahmad El-Marzuq, and is made up of carefully selected lawyers. The committee is tasked with the provision of comprehensive legal services to the party during the electioneering period.

At the inauguration of the party were the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; the Minister of State, Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo amongst others.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vice President Osinbajo said that the Committee is crucial to the achievement of the party’s electoral ambitions in the 2023 Elections both at Federal and State levels across the country.

The responsibilities of the APC Legal Compliance Committee, he said, include ensuring that all internal structures of the party and external engagements of the party are conducted in accord with established operating procedures and the law; insulating the campaign of the party at all levels against breaches of rules, regulations, guidelines, and laws by ensuring strict compliance thereof; and to develop compliance checklists and protocols, conduct trainings for campaign personnel, and prepare compliance reports for the party, among others.

He called on the members of the committee to be proactive and remain committed to this critical assignment.
“I am therefore glad that we have here an assembly of very committed members of the party, who, by their calling as lawyers, will be able to offer tremendous value for the party through protection of its interests at every step of this electoral process.
“Those of you that have worked with us in the build-up to the 2015 and the 2019 general elections know that the proactive approach we adopted, especially through the ear-on-the-ground work of the Presidential Legal Team, has provided us crucial head-start in tackling some of the challenges that we were confronted with.
Professor Osinbajo insisted that APC has remained the only party anchored on social democracy, social protection and social mobility, especially for the poor.
“Ours is the only party anchored on social democracy, social protection, that is, social mobility for the poor, and justice for the wronged.”
according to the Vice President, the party’s manifesto in 2014, 2015 and 2023 contained the most detailed Social Investment Policy, saying: “in 2015, we became the first government to make budgetary provision of N500 billion for a comprehensive Social Investment Programme; feeding 9.5 million children in our Home-grown School Feeding Programme, providing jobs for 500,000 unemployed graduates through our N-Power programme, many deployed to primary schools in the hinterland as teachers, others trained under the N-TECH, N-BUILD. Our GEEP programme provided 2 million informal traders with small loans via its TraderMoni, MarketMoni and FarmerMoni schemes.
“We also built up the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme. Along with the World Bank and local Communities we complied a register of the poorest Nigerians and began a programme of giving them a total of about N20,000 monthly per household and introduced livelihood support. Our opponents criticized us, for providing money for the poor to do their business, we say to them that is who we are a party committed to lifting the poor out of poverty, but we are also accountable.
“Every person given a loan is properly documented on our electronic perform. They were given money by alerts on their phones so all loans are trackable and the entire process is auditable.”
The Vice President also recalled that the GEEP microcredit programmes, managed by the Bank of Industry (BOI), won several awards including the African Bankers Award twice, as well as getting, other global recognitions.
He said that the party remained committed to progressive left-of-the-centre ideology, adding that despite global economic challenges, the APC administration under President Buhari has achieved much in the pursuit of this vision.
“These are achievements known to even our detractors, though they admit so only behind closed doors. Knowing where we were in 2014, and the challenges we were able to overcome, and knowing the very likely danger of reversal of all that has been achieved by the Buhari administration, our Governors in States, and our legislators at national and State levels, we cannot afford to be nonchalant. Rather, we have to be proactive.”
Earlier, the spokesperson of the APC Presidential Campaign Council and Minister of State, Labour and Productivity, Keyamo, thanked the Vice President for his commitment to the service of the party and nation, saying that the importance of the Legal Compliance Committee particularly in the forthcoming elections across the country cannot be over emphasized.
He said that the task before the committee is huge but expressed confidence that given the support of the Vice President and other stakeholders, it will succeed in delivering on its mandate before, during and after the general elections.
