PDP’s Vote Of Confidence Or No Vote Of Confidence, Iyorchia Ayu Must Go – Gov Wike

Governor Nyeson Wike of River State

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has insisted that the vote of confidence the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) passed on Senator Iyorchia Ayu, PDP Chairman, cannot save him.

Speaking at a reception for decampees from various political parties to thePDP in Port Harcourt, the State capital today, September 10, Governor Wike said the fight to take out Ayu is on.

“I was watching, listening. They say there is one man called Secondus. They say he was dancing, celebrating that NEC gave their person a vote of confidence. He forgets history.

“Ask him, the same NEC through Aliyu Babangida, who moved a motion for vote of confidence supported by the same person, Ndudi Elumelu, they gave him a vote of confidence. What happened? He left the office.

“We don’t fight and go back. If you like you can have as many 20 votes of confidence, it’s not my business. My business is to make sure the right thing is done, and the right thing must be done; whether today or tomorrow.”

He said that despite the heightening political aligning and negotiations that are going on, his administration has not abandoned governance in the State.

The governor said that it is the love that he has for the State that made him to remain devoted to providing good governance until the last day of his tenure.

“I’m not going to play party with the interest of my people. Rivers State is paramount to me first before any other person or group.

“So, the eyes can see what we have done. Up till today, we have not abandoned governance. So many people are already rounding off, taking the last they have but yet, we are still committed to commissioning, and flagging off projects.

“Because of the love we have for our people, we will continue to serve you till May 29, when by the grace of God, Siminialaye Fubara will be inaugurated the governor of Rivers State.”

Governor Wike commended the decampees for their courage to “rejoin their political family because it is true that there is no other political party that can win election in Rivers State except the PDP”.

“PDP is a household name in Rivers State. Let me assure you that we will all work with you. Nothing like somebody who has been there since and somebody who has just come back. The more the merrier.

“So, all of us must put hands together to make sure our governorship candidate, the National Assembly candidates, the House of Assembly candidates, at least from Rivers State, we return them 100 percent. That’s our primary duty.”

The governor dismissed efforts by other political candidates as mere attempt to appear on the ballot because there is no hope of winning for them.

Ogun Assembly Speaker Brags: My Arrest, Trial By EFCC Illegal

The embattled Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, is bragging that his recent arrest and trial by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) over his alleged N2.5 billion fraud is illegal.

Oluomo returned to the office in Abeokuta after perfecting his bail conditions from a Federal High Court in Lagos that is trying him along with the Clerk of the House, Taiwo Adeyemo and Oladayo Samuel, Director of Finance after being admitted to bail by the court.

In a statement personally signed and made available to journalists, Oluomo faulted his arrest and trial by the anti graft agency, saying that it acted against “section 36 of the Constitution.”

He said that he had already dragged the EFCC to court, but that the agency failed to wait for the determination of the suit before its operatives pounced on him.

The Speaker insisted that he had initially snubbed EFCC’s invitation due to the case filed against the agency, saying that he remains innocent of the charges filed against him.

The statement reads: “I maintain my innocence in the recent Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charges against me and I will want the court to decide because the hyperbolic nature of the petitions written by the impeached former Deputy Speaker, Dare Kadiri was also reflected in the charges.

“By law, I am not the Accounting Officer of the House, for emphasis, the House under my leadership operates only one bank account since 2019, through which running cost and allowances are paid directly into the bank accounts of individual Honourable members and staff of the House including the petitioner.

“Also, charges 10 and 11 are for the Eighth legislature before I became the Speaker.

“I also like to say that the refusal to honour the initial invitation of EFCC was because of the method adopted by EFCC is against section 36 of the Constitution and we challenged it in court, this is in the public domain as it was widely reported but the EFCC refused to wait for the pronouncement in that case before taking further steps, despite having joined issues with us in court.

“I have always been disciplined and upright in my position, conducts and dealings with people, I shall continue to remain myself with truth and honour as my goal. I thank everyone that showed love and concern in the last few days. Thanks and God bless you all.”

INEC Raises Alarm: We’ve Been Battling With Hackers On Our Result Viewing Portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised an alarm over several attempts by faceless hackers operating across the world to hack its result viewing (IReV) portal. The Commission’s boss, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who made this known today, September 9 while delivering a keynote address at a stakeholders’ conference on election result management in Abuja, said the commission has recorded several attempts to hack the cyber security system of the result viewing portal.

“Another technical concern for us is the repeated attempts to break through our cyber security system for the portal.

“Our engineers reported several cyberattacks on the portal during the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, some of them from as far as Asia. I am glad to note that all of them failed.

“However, while we are confident in the security solutions that we have deployed for IReV and all our web presence, we must remain vigilant and continue to strengthen our defences. We have tasked our engineers to do everything possible to fully protect the IReV and all our web resources”, he said.

Professor Yakubu said that INEC is working to address other challenges which are administrative in nature.

“For example, we found that some of the low-quality uploads that occurred in the field, which some of the observers have also noted, were due to the unavailability or substitution of presiding officers that were trained prior to the elections.

“We shall administratively deal with this challenge and ensure that only adequately trained Presiding Officers are deployed for elections.

“Also, more hands-on training may be required to ensure that all those involved throughout the value chain of the IReV are fully ready for what is bound to be a major outing during the 2023 general election.”

Asides from challenges, the INEC chairman noted that the commission has introduced new legal provisions, administrative procedures, and technological innovations to improve election conduct in 2023.

The conference was organized by YIAGA Africa, a civil society organization (CSO), to launch the election result analysis dashboard (ERAD) report agenda.

Ex Gov Fayose Describes Gov Wike As “The Soul” Of PDP, Claims No Rift In Party

Ayodele Fayose

The former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has described the governor of Rivers State, Nyeson Wike as “the soul” of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even as he dismissed the rumour of a rift between the Governor and the party’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Fayose, who spoke today, September 9, at the commissioning of a community school in Rivers State, blamed the misunderstanding between the two men on external forces.

The ex-governor rallied support for Atiku to win the 2023 presidential election.

“For me, I want to believe his Excellency Atiku Abubakar is not against you but let me say this quickly: a lot of people surrounding the throne are enemies of the throne, and a lot of people surrounding the throne have an issue to grind with somebody or some issues with somebody and they take it to where they are not supposed to take it.

“I believe the needful will be done because winning an election is all that matters. Wike has not come out to say that Atiku Abubakar is not the presidential candidate.

“I was there the second day after the election when our candidate, the former Vice President, visited the house, the residence of Governor Wike and we had mutual conversations. We were all happy. Everything was in place to move forward. I spoke at that meeting but we don’t want to aggravate this situation.

“I am only appealing to people that matter. In every political party, there would be groupings. The same family, and different interests but we can do better than we are doing. People around the corridor of power, please allow this candidate to win the election.

“We do not celebrate victory until it is ours. Even in my state, they said that Fayose is Tinubu’s man. Like I said, people were decamping – sitting governors – I did not. Some people believe that you have to destroy your leaders before they can rise.”

Buhari Inaugurates Presidential Committee On Economy To Address Decline In Crude Oil, Others

President Muhammadu Buharibhas inaugurated a Presidential Committee on the National Economy (PCNE) to, among others, look into the issue of the decline in the nation’s production of crude oil.

According to the President, while inaugurating the Committee today, made up of experts in economy, at the Presidential villa, Abuja, “it is estimated that last month, August 2022, we produced less than 1mn barrels. The fall in production is essentially due to economic sabotage.

“With the high price of oil in the world markets, producing at about half our OPEC quota has deprived us of much needed revenue and foreign exchange. Government is working tirelessly to reverse this situation.”

Buhari, who said however, that despite the disruptions in global economy and internal troubles, the Nigerian economy has continued to be resilient and maintains an upward trajectory, said however that some of the problems in the system can be addressed internally.

He reminded the Committee members that “some of the issues we must address are peculiar to us.”

The President recalled that COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the loss of substantial volumes of oil have had negative impacts on the Nigerian economy.

“Starting with COVID-19 and now the conflict in Ukraine, the past three years have been turbulent ones for the global economy. Global interdependence has become more apparent as we have had to deal with volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

“In this period, challenges faced by the world have been many including: (i) lockdowns as COVID-19 raged; (ii) disruptions to supply chains around the world; and (iii) sharp fluctuations in prices.

“Just as the world was beginning to recover from the coronavirus, the conflict in the Black Sea region between Ukraine and Russia worsened the challenges already being faced and created additional problems to which policy makers are having to respond.

“Our economy continues to grow despite the adverse effects of rising interest rates, a stronger US dollar and higher inflation across the world.”

President Buhari assured Nigerians that despite the economic hiccups, which necessitated borrowings from financial sources, his government is committed to the welfare of the citizens, especially the implementation of the Social Investment Programmes.

“While citizen concern about borrowing is well understood, our resort to borrowing must also be appreciated in the context of the resources required to deliver on the infrastructure, health and other socio-economic needs of our citizens.

“It remains a major goal of this Administration to continue pursuing its social protection programmes. These programmes provide support to the most vulnerable of our citizens.”

The President stressed the need to upscale resource mobilization and utilization in the country as more could be achieved in this direction.

“This Administration is also not unaware of the debates about resource mobilisation and utilisation. On resource mobilisation, our performance as a nation continues to be a source of concern.

“Tax revenues are approximately 8 per cent of our output. This compares very badly with those countries against which we measure ourselves that achieve 15-25 per cent. In the absence of revenue, our ability to deliver the most basic services is limited.”

President Buhari said that while he understands the concerns arising from the huge expenditure on fuel subsidy, it is expedient that a right balance be struck not to scare away investors:

“With respect to expenditure, our objective remains to ensure that spending is efficient and result oriented. In this regard, the debate around fuel subsidies is well noted. However, the right balance needs to be struck to ensure that as we protect our citizens, we do not leave room for inefficiencies and leakages.

“It is also important to ensure that our national investment environment is such that local and international private investors can be attracted and retained. Sustainably dealing with the challenge of policy predictability and coherence is an important element in this regard.”

On the mandate and constitution of the Committee under his headship with representations from State Governors, the President said he is convinced that it will deliver as expected for the benefit of the populace.

“The Presidential Committee of the National Economy, which I am inaugurating today, aims to bring together all policy makers responsible for the economy. In this way, we share a common understanding and approach to resolving the issues I have identified and many more.

“This Committee, will provide our nation an opportunity to be bold, more proactive, and innovative in tackling persistent challenges. The work with which I have tasked the assembled team will enable us respond more swiftly and efficiently.”

Presentations were made at the event by Dr. Doyin Salami, Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, as well as Godwin Emefiele, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria.

Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, represented Chairman of the Governors Forum.

The Presidential Committee on the Economy is chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari and has as members, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum; Dr. Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, Minister for Finance, Budget, and National Planning; Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment; and Chief Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum.

Other members include Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to the President; Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Dr. Mohammed Sagagi, Vice Chairman of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council.

The Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Dr. Doyin Salami, is Member/Secretary of the Committee.

The Presidential Committee will review the national economic situation and propose measures to ensure our national economy improves and can meet the government’s objectives. The Committee will also receive regular updates on economic conditions in the country, identify issues that require urgent intervention to improve macroeconomic and fiscal conditions, review the impact of existing and new policies on the Nigerian economy and provide directions to relevant institutions responsible for fiscal, monetary, and any other relevant policies.

Against the background of recent developments in the global economy and its impact on Nigeria’s economic trajectory, this Presidential Committee is another clear demonstration of Mr. President’s total commitment to ensuring that the Nigerian economy successfully navigates through these difficult times. It will be an “economic emergency room” that will work towards keeping Nigeria on the path of economic recovery and growth, global competitiveness as well as inclusive development and sustainability.

The Governor of Ebonyi State under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Engineer Dave Umahi has said that the Presidential movement of Peter Obi, on the platform of the Labour Part (LP) is a big hope for Igbo people in the Southeast.
Umahi, who spoke to newsmen today, September 9, shortly after a private audience with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential villa, Abuja, said that Obi might not win the election but that his movement is a sign that Igbos are very close to the powerhouse.
“Peter Obi’s movement is anchored on hope,” he said, adding that it is only God that will determine who wins the 2023 election.
” Peter Obi’s movement is an Eye-opener that the Southeast is ready to occupy the Presidency in no distance future. I love the movement. It may not translate to victory. ”
Governor Umahi, who contested the presidency under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at its presidential primary which was won by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made it clear that in his scheme of preference, after his party’s candidate, “Peter Obi is next.”
The governor said that he was in the villa to invite the Present to commission, sometime in October, a state-of-the-art Governor’s lodge he built in Asokoro, Abuja.
He boasted that the lodge, which he started on a virgin land he bought in 2015 when he came in as governor, is first of its kind in the country, “to portray the good image of Ebonyi State.”

Iyorchia Ayu Thanks PDP For Backing Him: No, You Must Go – Wike

PDP National Chairman, Ayu | Photo credit: Premium Times

The National Chairman of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu has thanked the National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party for asking him to go ahead with the leaderhip of the party beyond the 2023 general electios.

This was even as his main opposition inside the party, Nyeson Wike, Governor of Rivers State insisted that he must resign for peace to return to the party.

Dr. Ayu, who reacted to the party’s NEC, BoT decision yesterday, September 9, said that the National Working Committee (NCW), which he steers, would continue to steer the ship of the party in the right direction.

The chairman said that disagreements between party members are normal, adding that what mattered is not such disagreements but how they are resolved.

“In spite of all impressions being created, even in the families, sometimes you have family disagreements.

“I think this party is famous for settling disagreements and going on to win elections in the past. This time is not an exception.

“I am happy that the majority of people are interested in our party. So, because we disagree among ourselves within our capacity, we have done it before and I believe we will do it again.”

Responding to the development, Governor Wike insisted that Senator must step down despite the resignation of Walid Jibril as the Board of Trustees chairman.

Wike reiterated his stance on Ayu’s resignation, recalling the promise allegedly made by the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar when he won the party primary election in May.

According to Wike, Atiku had assured him that Ayu would vacate his position as party chairman.

The governor said that Jibrin’s resignation as the Board of Trustees chairman won’t stop his demand for Ayu’s removal.

UBA Rolls Out Drums To Celebrate The N85.7 billion Profit-Before-Tax

Africa’s global bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, is in celebration mood as it announced its audited financial results for the half-year ended on June 30, 2022, recording double-digit growth across key income lines as well as significant progress in the contribution from its subsidiaries.

At the end of the first two quarters of the year, the bank was able to deliver a 12.6 per cent appreciation in profit before tax to N85.7bn, up from N76.2bn recorded in the same period of 2021.

In spite of numerous business, economic as well as geo-political environmental challenges including continued supply-chain interruptions due to COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the resultant rise in prices of global commodities that characterized the first six months of the year, the tier1 lender delivered impressive numbers with gross earnings hitting N372.4bn, a solid 17.8 percent growth when compared with N316 billion that was posted the same period in the previous year.

The result also shows that operating income also grew by 20.1% to N256bn in the period, while the firm’s profit after tax closed the first half stronger at N70.3 billion, up by 16.1 percent compared to the N60.6 billion same period in 2021.

A further breakdown of the bank’s half-year result which was filed with the Nigerian Exchange Group(NGX) in the early hours of Thursday, September 8, showed total assets continued on an upward trajectory, increasing 5.4 percent to about N9 trillion.

During the period to date, UBA also delivered on its core mandate of extending loans to credit worthy customers, with loans and advances increasing by 4 percent to N3 trillion; while deposits rose by 7.9 percent to N7.6 trillion at the end of the period.

Shareholders’ funds, however, declined marginally by 2 percent to N788.5 billion, owing mainly to the decline in its foreign operations translation reserve as well as fair value losses suffered from the investment securities valuation occasioned by the increasing interest rate regime across the globe.

With the strong double-digit growth in PAT vis-à-vis the marginal decline in shareholder’s fund, the Group’s return on equity (RoE) closed the period stronger at 17.7%, while return on assets (RoA) came to 1.6%, up by 9 basis points.

Reaffirming its commitment to shareholders and the investing public, the Board of Directors of UBA Plc declared an interim dividend of 20 kobo per share for every ordinary share of N0.50 each held by its shareholders.

Commenting on the result, UBA’s Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, said the stellar performance was in line with management’s expectation, adding that the bank’s continued focus on its “customer first philosophy’’ to pursue the mission of providing superior value to stakeholders had increased low-cost customer deposits, and boosted the growth of its payment and transaction banking.

“The financial year 2022 showed initial signs of recovery of economies across the globe, despite continued COVID-induced supply-chain disruptions. However, geopolitical challenges including the Russia and Ukraine conflict, resulted in escalation of global commodity prices, particularly that of grains and crude oil, which have taken a toll on several economies.

“Notwithstanding these developments, our half-year numbers came out stronger than the previous year with top and bottom-line reaching new record highs,” Alawuba said.

According to him, the Group’s profitability increased by 12.6% to N85.7 billion, with double-digit growth recorded across key income line.

The Bank also recorded a decent 20% growth in net interest income as it continues to moderate cost of funds whilst improving yield on assets, thereby contributing to the strong 20% growth in operating income.

“Our investments in state-of-the-art technology has continued to yield expected results and this is evident in the huge boost of our digital banking income, which grew 22.7% year-on-year to N36.3 billion.

“These gains have enabled us optimise net earnings amid the accelerating inflationary pressure, currency devaluation, and increased regulatory-driven costs,” he said.

Alawuba, who is delighted with the bank’s strides in growing its market share across Africa, added: “Our retail business has continued to grow as we ride on our agency banking network, trusted brand, competitive product offerings and quality service delivery, to deepen our retail penetration.”

He also commented on his recent appointment as Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, alongside five other Group Executive Directors and assured the investing public of his relentless commitment to the growth of the business.

“Together, with our highly motivated workforce, we are poised to usher the business into a new era of growth that will deliver superior value to all stakeholders.’’

UBA is a leading Pan-African financial institution, offering banking services to more than thirty-seven million customers across 1,000 business offices and customer touch points in 20 African countries.

With presence in New York, London and Paris and now the UAE, UBA is connecting people and businesses across Africa through retail, commercial and corporate banking, innovative cross-border payments and remittances, trade finance and ancillary banking services.

We Found Military Uniforms, Huge Cash In Tukur Mamu’s House – DSS

The Department of State Service (DSS) has said that it had recovered incriminating materials, including military accoutrements, large amounts of different currencies and denominations in the houses of bandits’ negotiator, Tukur Mamu.

The spokesman of DSS, Peter Afunanya disclosed this in reactions to media enquiry about a raid carried out in the Kaduna house and office of Mamu in the early hours of today, September 8.

Afunanya said that many things recovered were so incriminating, saying that the arrested Tukur Mamu, who is a journalist and publisher will be charged to court.

”So far, appropriate security agencies have executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office. During the processes, incriminating materials including military accoutrements were recovered.

”Other items include large amounts in different currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments. While further investigations continue, Mamu will, sure, have a day in court,” Afunanya said.

Meanwhile, the secret police has beefed up security around its facility in its Abuja headquarters.

A source at the headquarters of the secret police hinted that the deployment heavy security personnel might not be unconnected with presence of Mamu at the facility.

Security sources said Mamu was arrested for his alleged involvement in collecting and sharing ransom being taken from the families of victims to terrorists in exchange for kidnapped victims.

Mamu was arrested at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano yesterday, September 7 afternoon.

The Kaduna-based publisher, who was first arrested in Egypt was detained for 24 hours before he was flown back to Nigeria.

While the Egypt Air aircraft, which conveyed him and his family members, touched down in Kano around 1:55pm, he was immediately picked up by the operatives of the DSS, who were stationed at the entrance of the international wing of the airport several minutes before the aircraft landed.

Heavily armed operatives who were also in company of others dressed in mufti, were on guard at the entrance of the arrival section of the international wing of the airport where three vehicles – two hilux and one hiace- with Kano number plates parked by the entrance.

As passengers began to file out from the arrival section, one of the hilux vehicles moved forward as the luggage, presumably of Mamu and his family members, were being loaded in one of the vehicles while the one which picked Mamu zoomed off.
