President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Academic Staff Union of Universities {ASUU) to reconsider their position on the prolonged strike, warning that the strike will have generational consequences on families, the educational system and future development of the country.
The President, who received some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence in Daura, Katsina State today, July 11, said that the strike had already taken a toll on the psychology of parents, students and other stakeholders, throwing up many moral issues that already beg for attention.
President Buhari noted that the future of the country rests on the quality of educational institutions and education, while assuring that the government understands their position, and negotiations should continue, with students in lecture halls.
“We hope that ASUU will sympathise with the people on the prolonged strike. Truly, enough is enough for keeping students at home. Don’t hurt the next generation for goodness sake.”
The President called on all well meaning Nigerians, particularly those close to the leaders and members of the association, to intervene in persuading the lecturers to reconsider their position, and the ripple effect on an entire generation and the nation.
He said that students from Nigerian universities will be faced with the challenge of competing with others in a highly connected and technology-driven work space, and that keeping them at home will only deprive them of time, skill and opportunities to be relevant on the global stage.
“Colonial type education was geared towards producing workers in government. Those jobs are no longer there. Our young people should get education to prepare them for self-employment. Now education is for the sake of education.
“Through technology we are much more efficient. We should encourage our children to get education, not only to look for government jobs.”
President Buhari said that resources should be channeled more into building infrastructure and operations of the health and educational sector, not to expand the bureaucracy to create job opportunities.
APC Governors at the lunch with the President were Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State, Dr. Fayemi Kayode of Ekiti State, Simon Lalong of Plateau State and Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. Of Kebbi State.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued an exposure draft for the digital financial services awareness guidelines to address gaps in consumer knowledge and practices with Digital Financial Services (DFS).
This is coming against the background of the Council of the European Union (EU) and European Parliament’s provisional agreement on proposals to regulate EU markets in crypto assets (MiCA), including stablecoin and unbacked crypto asset issuers. It includes trading venues and wallets and introduction of consumer protection measures and standards for stablecoins.
The CBN, in a circular titled: “Digital financial services awareness guidelines” on its website, said that the rules are to establish a set of principles and expectations for financial service providers to incorporate in the provision of DFS in order to promote consumer knowledge, good treatment, and positive outcomes.
According to the CBN, “DFS have the potential to expand access to financial services for the Nigerian population and spur innovation in the financial services industry.
The guidelines provide for a set of principles and expectations for financial service providers to integrate in the provision of DFS to ensure consumer understanding, good treatment, and positive outcomes.”
It said that the provisions of the guidelines would apply to institutions providing DFS, including Deposit Money Banks, merchant banks, Other Financial Institutions, Payment Service Banks, and other payment service institutions as licensed by the CBN.
The CBN listed the objectives of the guidelines which include; “digital financial literacy standards for digital financial services providers; to align product development, promotion, and consumer awareness to DFS among DFSP; to enhance transparency and proper disclosure on DFS; to provide for the development of financial literacy and consumer education materials on DFS.
Others are to ensure evidence-driven DFL approach; integrate DFL in existing financial education programmes; to drive targeted DFL approach to the underserved population; and to provide standard for the promotion of DFL.
The apex bank said that DFSs must promote DFS awareness and education, give information that allows customers to differentiate DFS products from traditional banking goods and services, and ensure easy access to information on all product offers so that consumers may make educated decisions.
Ppart of the responsibility is providing product information in simple English and local languages, doing outreach to underprivileged communities about DFS alternatives accessible to them, and providing information on product usage and how to obtain support services when needed.
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his eagerness to finish his two term tenure next year, 2023 and go back to his house in Daura. He added that he has a beautiful house in Kaduna but would prefer to retire to his house in Daura because Kaduna is too close to Abuja.
“In ten to eleven months’ time, I will come here (Daura). I have a better house in Kaduna, but it is too close to Abuja.”
The President spoke today, July 11, when he played host to some governors under the umbrella of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who paid him a Sallah homage at his country home, Daura in Katsina State.
H said: “I am eager to go. I can tell you it has been tough. I am grateful to God that people appreciate the personal sacrifices we have been making.
“By this time next year, I would have made the most out of the two terms, and the remaining months I will do my best.”
The President told the governors and political leaders that he had not been to his house in Daura for close to a year due to the demands of office.
“The observation that I abandoned my base was made by the Emir of Daura, Dr Faruk Umar Faruk, at the eid prayer ground. He held the microphone and told everyone that the last time I was in Daura was during the Eid-el-Kabir of 2021.”
The President said that the schedule of work is much, saying that he recently had to sympathise with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, who had to be away most of the time from his family.
The Presidency has detailed the achievements in all fronts, of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, against an Editorial by Daily Trust newspaper that implied that Buhari had not done anything.
Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity to the
Shehu Garba
President, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement today, July 11, acknowledged however that the authors of the editorial are correct that Nigeria, like every other country in the world, is undergoing a period of hardship, but that to suggest that Buhari is not leaving Nigeria in a better place than he found it, especially on the key pillars of the economy, security and corruption, “is pure fantasy.”
Garba Shehu said that the facts speak for themselves, adding that on security, as recently as 2015 Boko Haram held territory the size of Belgium in Nigeria but that today, they hold no Nigerian territory to speak of.
“In March, our military eliminated the leader of ISWAP in an airstrike using U.S. jets and British intelligence – testament to the newfound trust our allies hold in our administration, not enjoyed by previous administrations.
“Moreover, our administration is the only in Nigeria’s history to implement a solution to the herder-farmer conflicts through our landmark National Livestock Transformation Plan. Already, where ranches have been established under that initiative, we are seeing a sharp reduction in disputes.
“It is therefore incorrect to say nothing has changed, not to talk of getting worse. “Even around the Daily Trust, things have improved. Seven years is a long time and their new managers may be unaware that in 2015, The Daily Trust needed barriers around their premises and heavy security- as did many other sensitive institutions- to be safe from terrorists. Now, they have all that removed, a clear indication that the threats, as they existed at that time have abated.
“On corruption, this administration has seen hundreds of millions in stolen funds returned from abroad and used as social and welfare funds distributed directly to the poorest during the Covid-19 pandemic and the provision of long-delayed infrastructure-roads, bridges, rail, and power. This is a direct result of Buhari administration’s initiatives such as our whistleblowing policy which empowers and emboldens Nigerians to report corruption without fear.
“Moreover, it again demonstrates the newfound trust our international partners have in Nigeria, thanks to the efforts of our administration. Those same partners refused to return stolen monies to previous administrations for decades, knowing it would simply be stolen again.
“More importantly, what the Buhari administration has done is to place mechanisms to stop corruption from happening that include the strengthening of the office of the Auditor General, enhancing the capabilities of the anti-corruption agencies by signing into law several legislations and Executive Orders; the implementation of the Treasury Single Account, TSA, whistleblower; the implementation of public expenditure management and forensic accounting management systems and several others. “As for the economy, the unprecedented and vast infrastructure development driven by our administration has set the country on course for sustainable – and crucially, equitable economic growth – while our policies for boosting domestic production of food and energy will be key to us navigating the global cost of living crisis. “With global supply chains disrupted by the Covid-19 lockdown and the Russia Ukraine war, skyrocketing freight rates and extreme weather events causing inflation to surge all over the world, leaders are getting the beating and we expect that ours will not also be spared. “But fairness demands that we should give credit to whom it is due. President Buhari put in place a food policy, to grow what we eat and eat what we grow, that has averted the growing food security threat that is pushing nations into a conundrum.
“The President’s program has given the nation the confidence to ban rice imports, saving a daily amount USD 5 million in Forex. We have seen rice Pyramids in many states including Kebbi, FCT, Niger, Gombe and amazingly, Ekiti State.
“The country has witnessed the setting up of 54 integrated rice mills, 1,000 small scale rice mills, and 57 fertilizer plants revived or built anew in a boost to production. Nasarawa State is today competing with Niger in sugar production and Kaduna State is about to commission a steel mill. Only a performing economy can give these.
“One of the biggest mistakes that opponents of President Buhari make, is to believe in their own preconceived perceptions and propaganda about the brand of politics they believe in.
“For this President, one of the greatest investments a meaningful government can do is to better the lives of those at the lowest rung of the social ladder. This administration has more than 20 million persons benefiting from conditional cash transfers, school feeding and other social investment, SIP programs.
“In a time of global hardship, we are faced with enough challenges without inventing them where there are none. Moreover, pretending that achievements do not exist where they do helps no one. Rather, let us focus on what we have achieved so that we may build further upon those achievements to tackle the new challenges that continue to arise.
“Finally, it needs to be said that in period like this, when elections are within view, harsh and unfair criticisms are expected, especially against a leader like President Buhari with an image that is significant, in which the All Progressives Congress, APC invests heavily.”
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has commended the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for choosing Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate in the 2023 election in the country.
Reacting to Bola Tinubu’s announcement of Shettima as his running mate, which he made in Daura, Katsina State yesterday, July 10, Governor Zulum could not hold back his emotion, describing Shettima, a former two-term governor of Borno State as a politician with a “very deep understanding of our country and its complexities.
“For me, and I am sure for many leaders and members of the APC, Tinubu’s choice of HE Kashim Shettima is the wisest choice at this point in time.
“Shettima’s choice is very personal to me and together with our leaders and all stakeholders and members of the APC, we shall campaign vigorously, work day and night, to collectively secure overwhelming victory for the APC in 2023, insha’Allah.
“Without the slightest doubt, HE Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has chosen a leader who has very deep understanding of our country and its complexities. There is hardly any tribe in any of Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT that Senator Kashim Shettima cannot knowledgeably speak about. He knows the social, cultural, religious, economic and political structure of virtually all the 36 States and the FCT.
“Shettima is extremely patriotic. He believes so much in the unity of this country and he has proved it on a number of occasions.”
Governor Zulum recalled how Shettima spent over N30 billion on agricultural machinery during his administration following his prediction of a potential fall in the value of naira.
“As far back as 2012, Shettima had on many occasions predicted the likelihood of fall in revenue from oil just as he predicted potential fall in the value of naira to dollar, which was why he imported agricultural products worth over N30 billion which today are worth far more, making Borno one of the richest in agricultural machinery.”
President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with a veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs, as he celebrates his 80 birthday tomorrow, July 11.
The President said that the birthday of Olu Jacobs calls for thanksgiving for God’s care, guidance and protection.
Buhari acknowledged the influence of the veteran actor on the film industry, who he said, set a standard of professionalism that has attracted global recognition and awards, like the Lifetime Achievement Awards conferred on him in 2016 by African Movie Academy Awards.
He said that Olu Jacobs is endowed with ingenious ability to interpret roles, simplify complex issues and bring messages to the understanding of both young and old.
He added that the actor broke through cultural, ethnic and religious barriers to become a household name all over the country and beyond.
President Buhari said that Olu Jacobs’ natural tendency to counsel, inspire and instruct easily earned him the roles, while appreciating his foresight in winning many into the profession and guiding them to stardom.
The President, who congratulated Olu Jacobs family, including the wife, who is also a renowned thespian, Joke Silva, and their friends on the auspicious occasion, prayed that God will grant him better health, longer life and steadfastness in service to the Arts, God and humanity.
The Presidential flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that in choosing the former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, a Muslim like him as his running mate, he was not unmindful of the position of the Christians in the country.
The APC Presidential candidate was referring to the position of the umbrella body of Christians, the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), who said that they would not support him if he eventually goes for Muslim-Muslim ticket.
In a 35 paragraph statement today, July 10, personally issued by him to explain why he did what he did, Asiwaju Tinubu said that he cannot ignore the religious concerns and ethnic sensitivities of Nigerians.
According to him, taking the religion into consideration is an important part of good and able governance, but that religion, ethnicity and region cannot always and fully determine the path.
Asiwaju said that to forge ahead as a nation toward development and prosperity, Nigerians must break free of old binds.
“We must recalibrate our political calculations to where competence and fairness matter more than reductive demographics.”
The full text of Asiwaju’s statement is reproduced below. Please read:
May I say this to all of you, especially to those who will be disappointed in my selection based on religious considerations. I will not and cannot ignore the religious concerns and ethnic sensitivities of our people. Taking them into due consideration is an important part of good and able governance. But religion, ethnicity and region cannot always and fully determine our path. To forge ahead as a nation toward development and prosperity, we must break free of old binds. We must recalibrate our political calculations to where competence and fairness matter more than reductive demographics.
Fellow Nigerians, we enter a moment of renewed hope. We hold the chance to move the nation and our collective cause forward as never before. Let us seize this moment so that history may write kindly of us.
It is time to focus with utmost devotion and love of country to do all we can do to advance the ideals of democratic and progressive good governance in the land.
We must end poverty and bring greater prosperity and more lasting peace. Let us be wise of thought yet courageous in action, as we embark on a collective enterprise that brings jobs, education, food, medicine, hope and belief in a better life to those who need them.
I stand ready to begin this journey with you, hopefully, to lead the nation on this needed path as your next President by the grace of God. I believe this is a pivotal moment at which the dynamics of history and destiny call us forth to reshape our beloved nation. This is our moment.
We all must answer the nation’s call. For some, this requires of us that we step forward, assuming new roles and responsibilities. For others, it may mean something else. For all of us, it requires that we dedicate ourselves to the collective national task as never before.
To re-envision and reshape the nation, I must compose the best team possible, a team put together with but one overriding purpose: to forever establish just, capable, and compassionate governance for the people of Nigeria without regard to religion, region, or ethnic origin.
In the weeks since becoming the presidential candidate and standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have been touched as Nigerians from all walks of life have demonstrated their faith in my capacity to lead this country. I thank you for the outpourings of support for they reveal to me the hope you hold for this nation’s greatness. As long as we walk together and work together, we shall arrive at our national greatness together. To this glad and great endeavour, I fully devote myself and my future labour.
In full compliance with existing law and regulation, I submitted all necessary documents regarding my nomination as the APC presidential candidate to INEC. But, as was expected, the choice of my vice presidential running mate remained an open and burning question.
This gave rise to much speculation and debate.
Recent events [the voluntary withdrawal of my dear friend and brother Ibrahim Masari] mean that I am called upon, today, to put an end to the speculation.
I have never been an indecisive man and have no present intention to become one.
What I am, however, is a democrat. And a democrat must listen to, and consult with, the people and his advisors so that he may reform and govern wisely and on their behalf. This I have done. My political career was not built on blind indifference to the views of others. I appreciate the perspectives of leading members of the party, political allies and key national figures who see Nigeria’s future as I do. They gave me their views so that I might add their valuable insights to mine to reach the best decision possible and do so in a manner that strengthens the institutional fabric of our party as well as accelerating the evolution of our political democracy.
I am also a founding member of the APC. I hold our party’s core principles close to heart such that I shall do nothing to betray the spirit in which the party was created.
Having now listened to the sage, careful advice of a broad section of the party and of the nation, there are a few points I feel I must make about the exceptional and extraordinary person with whom I will share the APC ticket and the principles of open and good governance that informed this choice.
A dominant theme of my political history and my personal life is my staunch belief in our diversity. Greatness lies in embracing our diversity and making it work to enhance the dynamism and justice of our political system. My selection of a running mate comports entirely with this longstanding inclination.
The concurrence of my party in this matter has been a source of comfort and encouragement. We are truly building a progressive party that not only represents a departure from other political parties but one that truly may well be the best hope for democratic good governance in Nigeria.
I realize the momentous times we have entered. I know what lies in the balance. I also know that our political choices and activities send both intended and unintended signals to portions of the Nigerian electorate.
All my life, my decisions regarding the team around and supporting me have always been guided by the principles of competence, innovation, compassion, integrity, fairness, and adherence to excellence.
When I was Governor of Lagos State, these principles helped me assemble one of the most capable governing cabinets any state or this nation has ever seen. I trust enough in these principles to allow them to, once more, guide me to construct another exemplary team that can do Nigeria proud.
Second, this chapter in our country’s history demands a bold yet pragmatic approach, a path already chartered by the progressive ethos of the APC. The foundation for sustainable progress has been laid these past seven years by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The challenges of today are consequential because the lives and livelihoods of millions of Nigerians lie in the balance. Visionary and creative leadership will take us to our goal.
Our focus, therefore, must be on getting the job done; and that means getting the very best and competent people to do it. In this crucial moment, where so much is at stake, we must prioritize leadership, competence, and the ability to work as a team over other considerations.
I am mindful of the energetic discourse concerning the possible religion of my running mate. Just and noble people have talked to me about this. Some have counselled that I should select a Christian to please the Christian community. Other have said I should pick a Muslim to appeal to the Muslim community. Clearly, I cannot do both.
Both sides of the debate have impressive reason and passionate arguments supporting their position. Both arguments are right in their own way. But neither is right in the way that Nigeria needs at the moment. As president, I hope to govern this nation toward uncommon progress. This will require innovation. It will require steps never before taken. It will also require decisions that are politically difficult and rare.
If I am to be that type of President, I must begin by being that type of candidate. Let me make the bold and innovative decision not to win political points but to move the nation and our party’s campaign closer to the greatness that we were meant to achieve.
Here is where politics ends, and true leadership must begin.
Today, I announce my selection with pride because I have made it not based on religion or to please one community or the other. I made this choice because I believe this is the man who can help me bring the best governance to all Nigerians, period, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region.
This is why, today, I announce the selection of SENATOR KASHIM SHETTIMA as my partner and running mate in the mission to advance and reclaim the fortunes of this great country and the hopes of its people.
Senator Kasim Shettima’s career in politics and beyond shows that he is eminently qualified not only to deliver that all important electoral victory, but, also, step into the shoes of the Vice President. As a man with the talent, maturity, strength of character, and patriotism he has my implicit confidence and faith.
I am aware that many will continue focus on a particular detail, the question of his faith.
However, if we truly understand the challenges upon us a nation, then we must also see the imperative of placing competence in governance above religious sentiment.
In 1993, Nigerians embrace Chief MKO Abiola and a fellow Muslim running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe in one of our fairest elections ever held.
The spirit of 1993 is upon us again in 2023.
As such, the ticket we present today represents a milestone in our political history. It symbolizes our party’s determination to be a leading light among political parties in Africa.
The democratic process and the decorum that characterised our presidential primaries and the selection of our vice presidential candidate exemplifies why we are the party of the people and of the betterment of their future. With this selection the All Progressives Congress surely shall continue to be the party that shows the way and carries this nation towards its best future. I implore you all to join with me on this journey to a brighter future.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has threatened to arrest all members of any community that fails to expose any criminals and “bad guys” in such community.
The Governor spoke in his Ebira language shortly after observing two-Eid Rakkah to mark Eid-el-Kabir yesterday July 9, at his Agassa settlement in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Yahaya Bello made it clear that he’s determined to return the good old days where security at personal and family levels was a beautiful to behold, advising all to join his government in this matter.
“In the good old days in Ebira land, one could go to sleep and or go out with one’s door wide open, and return to meet everything in the house intact. But not so now.
” I’m determined to return those good old days. “And I seek the support and cooperation of all of you, because the government cannot do it alone.”
Governor Yahaya Bello stressed the need for people to begin to take interest on who are their neighbours and to identify the bad ones among them.
“Report the bad ones to the government and the relevant authorities. However, if it is the government that discovers the bad ones in your community, all the people in the community will be arrested.”
The Governor thanked his people for the support they gave him, leading to the achievements his government has so far attained. He also expressed appreciation for their support for his move at capturing the Presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He admitted that he could not make it but vowed: “next time, I will succeed.”
