Presidency: We’ll Not Support Muslim-Muslim Ticket, But We’ll Listen To Tinubu – CAN

CAN President, Dr. Samson Supo-Ayokunle

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), seems to have confused on what it wants in the current political dispensation as the nation prepares for the 2023 elections, especially for the Presidency.

In one breath, CAN insisted that its members will not  support the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 general poll if he finally settles for Muslim-Muslim ticket. In another breath, the same CAN said that it would not mind the religious combination of the leaders at the helm of the nation’s affairs, so long they provide good leadership, and yet in another, the Association said it would listen to Tinubu on the issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket if he seeks to meet its members.

The Assistant General Secretary of CAN, Elder Biodun Sanyaolu, in a statement, first condemned the possible Muslim-Muslim ticket in the ruling APC, saying that  CAN has made its position known that Muslim-Muslim ticket will not be supported, even Christian-Christian ticket either.

“It is not about Muslim-Muslim ticket or Christian-Christian ticket; it is the mistrust existing in us for the last seven years which have been so terrible even with Nigeria inter-Religious Council (NIREC).

Elder Biodun however said again: “all we are saying and want is the leader that will do well to everyone, irrespective of class, religion, sex, region, colour, among others.

“All we are craving for is a leader that will be fair to all Christians, Muslims and even Traditionalists. Poverty doesn’t know religion.

“If there is a bomb blast it will kill whoever on its way not minding religion. We want good leadership that will be fair to all and good governance in Nigeria.”

Speaking on whether the association will listen to APC Presidential candidate when campaign starts, Biodun said: “if he comes, we will welcome him and take a look at what they have for Nigerians and the public.”

This was even as Tinubu’s media aide, Tunde Ramon, said that his boss had not made any pronouncement on his running mate.

“Why don’t you wait for him (Tinubu) to announce his plans? What if he opts for Muslim-Christian ticket in the end?

“He is a God fearing man and detribalised Nigerian, he will be fair to all, there is no cause for the alarm.”

ISWAP Terrorists Planning More Attacks In Abuja, Civil Defence Alerts

The FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has alerted the government over what it called “a sinister plan” by members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), to launch coordinated and spontaneous attacks on soft and hard targets in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to a restricted memo dated Friday, July 8, 202 and addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) the NSCDC FCT commandant, led by Peter Maigari: “Certified intelligence reveals that members of the decimated terrorist group, Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) have concluded plan to launch more coordinated and spontaneous attacks on selected targets within the FCT and have declared war against Christians in Nigeria”, the memo, titled; ‘Renewed Threat Of Attack By ISWAP Terrorist On Targets Within the FCT.

“Intelligence abounds that ISWAP terrorist group has claimed responsibilities of the Tuesday, July 5, 2022 attack on Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, releasing their adherent members.

“The foregoing is to enable them hibernate in targeted communities and re-strategise for further terrorist activities, especially on soft targets to keep the agenda of the group alive to the public.”

The leaked memo further warned that taking into consideration the recent attack on Kuje Prison in Abuja, which lasted for “good two – hours without any security resistance indicates their readiness to carry out more coordinated attacks in selected cities/towns, security formations, schools and worship centres in FCT, hence the release of their members for a more formidable squad to carry out the dastardly act.”

Maigari, therefore, called for a review of the existing security measures in the nation’s capital in order to frustrate the terrorists’ plans.

The NSCDC was yet to confirm the authenticity of the document as at the time of filing this report.

Spokesperson of the FCT Command of the Corps, Comfort Okomanyi, has not responded to phone calls and messages to confirm the memo.

Army Describes Femi Fani Kayode As Rabble Rouser Over “Unsubstantiated Allegations”

The Nigerian Army has protested vehemently against what it called “wild and unsubstantiated allegations” in a video that has gone viral, by Femi Fani-Kayode against it, regarding the recent spate of terrorist attacks particularly, the attack of the prison in Kuje – Abuja on 5 July 2022.

The Defence Headquarters, in a statement today, July 9, by its Director of Information, Major General Jimmy Akpor, described Fani-Kayode as “a known Rabble-Rouser.”

“Ordinarily, the video and its maker, would have been ignored, considering the antecedents of the person behind it as a known Rabble-Rouser. However, in the interest of members of the public who might be misled by the deliberate falsehood and the sensibilities of service personnel and their families who have been paying dearly to keep Nigerians safe, it has become urgent to respond to the video currently circulating in the social media.”

General Akpor recounted the allegations made by Femi Fani-Kayode, including the claim that the Department of State Security (DSS) informed the military about the impending attack on Kuje Custodial Centre and even the previous attack on the Kaduna –  Abuja rail service.

He said that Fani-Kayode also claimed that soldiers were withdrawn shortly before the prison attack.

“In all these allegations, Mr Kayode is merely playing to the gallery. He is not in any position to know whether the DSS notified the military of any attack or not. It may not be impossible that such a claim is part of a calculated attempt to cause division and rivalry amongst all Government Agencies that have been working collaboratively in addressing issues of insecurity in the country.

“The claim that soldiers were withdrawn from the Kuje Correctional Custodial Centre before the attack is laughable. It is sad that Mr Kayode is ignorant of whose responsibility it to guard prison.

“Mr Femi Kayode further claimed that the military took no action on the recent Shiroro terrorists’ attack, which resulted in the unfortunate death of some soldiers, some policemen and members of the public. This is also an attempt to smear the military and create bad blood between service personnel and the military high command.

“A despicable statement that dishonours the sacrifices of the gallant officers and soldiers that paid the supreme price whilst responding in defence of the civilians and the mining community. What a shame! Mr Kayode is encouraged to pay more attention to the weekly briefs by Defence Media Operations. Defence Media Operations gives weekly briefs/updates on operations  being conducted across the country; press releases on military operations are also made when the need arises.

“Mr Fani-Kayode is also called to refresh himself on the constitutional roles of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. In all, subordination to civil authority is key. It is pertinent to state that, the Nigerian Armed Forces has toiled to sustain and nurture our democracy, hence the same military cannot contemplate a coup de tat, as alluded to by Mr Kayode in his video. The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor has always stressed the unalloyed loyalty of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the President, Commander-in-Chief and the Nigerian Constitution.

“Accordingly, as the 2023 General Elections approach, desperate persons must depart from their evil ways, for never again would they lure the military into their wicked machinations. If a confession must be made, Nigerians must know now: the military is always the worse victim of military rule.

“Finally, in a miserable attempt to malign the leadership of the military, Mr Kayode gave the impression that, while junior military commanders and non-commissioned officers are working hard, senior commanders are doing nothing. This is sheer ignorance and nothing more. Mr Kayode is completely oblivious of the fact that in the military, orders, instructions and directives are issued from the hierarchy to the lower rungs of command. Therefore, junior commanders cannot be working hard while their superiors are idle.

“This is indeed a difficult time for the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Nigerians as a whole. It is not time for attention-seeking individuals to cause needless distractions. Members of the public are therefore urged to ignore Mr Femi Fani-Kayode and continue to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to law enforcement agencies.”

It’s A Lie, N82 Million, $36,000 Not Stolen By Fleeing Kuje Prison Inmates – Spokesman

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has debunked reports that fleeing inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, in Abuja during the attack, stole the sums of N82 million and $36,000 cash belonging to inmates.

The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Abubakar Umar, in a statement today, July 9, said that its personnel didn’t keep such huge sums within custodial facilities.

According to him, all inmates’ cash deposited in the custody of the authorities of the custodial centre was intact and safe.

“There is an existing instruction from the Controller General, NCoS, Mr Haliru Nababa that all officers superintending custodial centres must not keep huge sums in the facility.”

Nababa expressed appreciation to security agencies and patriotic Nigerians whose collaboration was facilitating the recovery, assuring the public of his irrevocable commitment to bringing back all escapees to answer for their crimes.

Some media had reported that personnel at the Kuje Custodial Centre could not account for the sums of N82 million and $36,000 cash belonging to inmates.

Recall that scores of terrorists had, on July 5, launched an attack on the facility, bombing their way in. The terrorists freed 879 inmates, among whom were at least 64 who were detained on terror-related charges.

The Service spokesman said that the clarification of the matter became imperative against the misleading narrative the unfounded information had generated and the diversion of attention from addressing the challenges at stake.

Prepare For Period When There’ll Be No Government Jobs, Buhari Tells Youths

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the youths in the country, especially students in universities and other tertiary institutions, to prepare themselves for the period when government jobs would no longer be available to absolve them.

“We are reaching a time where you don’t have to get education and start looking for government jobs. What happens when government job is not there?”

President Buhari, who received members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Daura, Katsina State, at his country home, today, July 9, asked the youths to get educated and equip themselves for bigger opportunities, provided by technology.

He told the youth Corps to keep expanding their views on life and opportunities, and avoid the limitations of culture, ethnicity and religion.

He asked them to explore technology to network, even beyond borders, and to ensure personal development and a more competitive means of livelihood.

He further advised the youths to look beyond culture, ethnicity and religion in relating with one another, even as he asked them to engage in more travels, mingling, tolerance and negotiations to appreciate the rich diversity of the country.

According to Buhari, regular interface and broader vision of Nigeria as a whole will improve relationships, especially among the youths.

The President commended the former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon for establishing NYSC, saying: “every time I meet former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, I always thank him for the NYSC, which helps people to move all over Nigeria.

“Before the NYSC, there were people who had never moved out of their locality.”

The President said that the scheme broadened the horizon for many over the years, and reduced the tensions and misunderstandings that exist between strangers.

“When I joined the army, I was posted to Abeokuta and then Lagos. And I have travelled all over Nigeria.”

Speaking, the Corps Liaison Officer (CLO), Douglas Damina, thanked the President for encouraging sustenance of the NYSC, and promoting youth inclusiveness and empowerment.

“Mr. President, we pray that the Almighty God will accept your prayers and remember your sacrifices for the nation.”

Damina told the President that the Corps members had achieved a lot in community development, renovating three motor boreholes, training 350 youths in various skills, and encouraging proper hygiene, especially among women.

President Buhari later donated two bulls, ten rams and the sum of N1,000,000  to the corps members  for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Why God Is Angry With Nigeria – Chief Imam

The Chief Imam of Chibiri in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Sheikh Mohammed Musa has said that God is obviously angry with Nigeria in particular because people have abandoned His teachings.

In a sermon he delivered today, July 9, after a two-Rakkah Eid prayer at a field in Chibiri, Sheikh Mohammed said that the greatest offence humanity can commit and which most Nigerians have committed against God is to deliberately disobey His Commands.

“Top on these offences which Nigerians have collectively committed against God is lack of trust between couples, between friends and above, between humanity and God Himself.

He gave example of a country that was destroyed by God on the basis of loss of trust in all ramifications like Nigeria.

He warned that Nigerians need to retrace their steps and imbibe the essence of trust, else, the country may not be able to overcome various challenges facing it.

According to him, there is no way a people would abandon the ways of God and expect to get good result and live a trouble-free life.

Sheikh Mohammed enjoined Muslims and others to learn the good old day of living and to love one another as basis for God’s mercies.

Kuje Prison Attack: Terrorists Came In Large Number, With Superior Weapons – Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi, has admitted that terrorists who stormed Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja and released their members and other criminals from the detention after three hour bombing and shooting, came in large number with superior weapons.

The minister, who spoke to news men shortly after an emergency National Security Council (NSC) meeting convened by President Muhammadu Buhari, said that the government was taken by surprise by the attackers, saying that the incidence is being investigated.

Dingyadi said that some of the attackers were killed during the raid, but did not provide a figure, but that the terrorists could have taken the corpses away.

“You see this kind of thing; they happen. And I want to assure you that all those who are supposed to play a role in ensuring that the attack is neutralized did the best that they could to neutralize it.

“I think what helped them (terrorists) was the number of people they came with and the superior weapons that they came with.

“And because nobody anticipated it, the few people who were there guarding the place could not withstand the number that they came with. I think that was what happened.

“Some of them have been killed. But I can’t give you the number, and I don’t know the number. Because like they used to do, whenever one of them is killed, they take the corpse away, and you cannot know the number of people who have been killed. But definitely, quite a number of them were killed, and many of them ran away with bullet wounds.”

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) had since claimed responsibility for the attack, which led to the freeing of about 69 suspected Boko Haram terrorists held in the prison, as well as some other inmates.

The government had earlier said that 879 inmates, including all the Boko Haram suspects, escaped. A kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala, popularly known as Wadume, was among the suspect who escaped.

The onslaught led to the death of five persons, including an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) and four inmates.

An undisclosed number of others were wounded.

We Must Take A Stand Against Terror, Injustice, Tinubu Insists

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Presidential flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that Nigerians must now take a stand against terrorists that have devastated the country and against injustice in the land.

In a message today, July 8, on the Eid-el-Kabir celebration coming up tomorrow, Tinubu acknowledged that the nation is facing “stiff challenges.

“Most troubling is the spate of violent attacks on innocent Nigerians. We must take a stand against terror and injustice. These evils lie forever outside our faith. Those who perpetuate such inhumanity do so in opposition to Islam and all that it means.

“To be true Muslims is to adhere to the principles of peace, tolerance, justice, and charity. Our faith asks us to stand against those perpetrating evil and visiting untold misery on others. And we must remain forever obedient to the kind and life-affirming principles of our faith.

“Yes, there are those who seek to bring this nation and Islam into disrepute through their destructive and violent actions. They seek to pit brother against brother, neighbour against neighbour, and religion against religion.

“They want to break the peaceful order of society. But Allah has placed us here to build a better Nigeria by taking care and seeing all of its inhabitants as our brothers and sisters regardless of ethnicity, faith and region. This we shall do. And no amount of evil or terror from whatever quarter shall stop us from fulfilling what Allah has commanded us to do.”

Asiwaju asked Nigerians to continue to believe in the excellent nation Nigeria can be, advising that people should eschew violence, with emphasis on “those who cause and sponsor it. Let us not forget the poor and vulnerable among us. Let us demonstrate brotherly concern and compassion and give succour to those unable to help themselves.

“This Eid, we beseech Almighty Allah to protect the weak, feed the poor and give us the courage and wisdom to subdue and defeat those who would seek to hurt the innocent and impair this nation.

“We pray for our gallant soldiers and other security agents who, daily, sacrifice themselves to confront violent evil. Let us also remember President Muhammadu Buhari, our governors and other leaders in our prayers that they might find the wisdom and fortitude to surmount the challenges facing this country that, together, we can enjoy the benefits of a better Nigeria.

“We pray for a greater nation and society where the light of democracy, peace, prosperity and hope shines on and for all of us and the darkness of poverty, violence and hatred is forever banished.

“We pray that Nigeria shall be faithful and remain true to its great calling and destiny.”

Before We Are All Kidnapped, By Fredrick Nwabufo

The first casualty of capricious election seasons in Nigeria is security. Governance is abandoned, and all efforts and expense are dissipated on party politics. Nigeria’s security insalubrities are deteriorating steeply as the 2023 elections close in. It is all reminiscent of the build-up to the 2015 elections when ubiquitous violence seized the country and the elections had to be postponed. Will it be again as it was before? Will it be plus ca change?

Religious leaders – both Christians and Muslims – have become the latest spectacle of these gangs of death-dealers from the netherworld.

On July 3, Udo Peter and Philemon Oboh, both priests of the Catholic Church, were abducted by gunmen in Edo state. The gunmen reportedly kidnapped the Catholic priests on Benin-Auchi expressway. On July 4, the despoilers kidnapped Emmanuel Silas, a Catholic priest, in Kaduna state. Silas was reportedly kidnapped in Zambina, Kauru LGA of the state.

On June 25, the ravagers killed Vitus Borogo, the chaplain of the Catholic Church in Kaduna Polytechnic. Borogo was reportedly killed at the Prison Farm, Kujama, along Kaduna-Kachia road. Weeks before this incident, Joseph Bako, a Catholic priest who was abducted in March from his residence at St John Catholic Church, Kudenda, Kaduna, was found dead.

On June 29, Samuel Kanu, Methodist prelate, was kidnapped in Abia state. The clergyman gave a depressingly harrowing account of his ordeal on the turf of these enemies of humanity. A few other priests have been kidnapped and some killed.

The kidnapping of priests appears methodic and targeted – just like the targeting and abduction of emirs and village heads by these ”bandits”. Perhaps the motive is to instigate and amplify religious tension. Already, there have been suggestions that these assaults on existence fit into a grand sinister plot. But we must realise, at all times, that these criminals are the common enemy of all. They have killed and kidnapped Muslims, Christians, children, young and old.

We must remain united against the devilment of those who want to cleave us apart.

These blights on humanity have sacked communities in Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina and elsewhere. They have expropriated land and are extracting tolls from citizens. Security agents have not been spared. They have been abducted and some reportedly have paid ransoms to secure their freedom. The plot on security seems totally lost.

A few days ago, a divisional police officer (DPO) who was leading his men to rescue kidnap victims in Nasarawa was himself stolen by these dare-devil freebooters. His abductors demanded five million naira before he would be freed. On June 26, Ochogwu Sunday, a divisional police officer in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna was kidnapped. Other officers have either been kidnapped or killed. On Wednesday, Aminu Umar, an assistant commissioner of police, was felled by the crimson bullets of bandits in Katsina.

And it persists. No let-up. No solution. No prognosis of hope. No respite. But utter confusion, hopelessness and helplessness. The land is violated and coursing with the blood of innocents.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has become of the hippodrome of bandits — where they put up defying performances and saunter away. For years, these criminal gangs have operated in the FCT – but the administration has always dismissed the potency of this threat.

A few days ago, some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were kidnapped on their farm. Kuje where the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) recently did a blitzkrieg has been in the throes of terror. Some communities in the area have been sacked by kidnappers, and many residents have abandoned their houses to seek shelter elsewhere. Other parts of the FCT like Ushafa, Bwari and Kubwa have also been visited by the pestilence.

The blitz by ISWAP on the Abuja prison reveals the pregnability and rudderlessness of Nigeria’s seat of power. On Thursday, the US and the UK warned their citizens to be vigilant as crime would spike in the FCT. Kidnappings, armed robberies, drugs and all other iniquities have become the quotidian aspect of life in the nation’s capital. The FCT has never been this plagued.

Terrorists, possibly, converged within the FCT for days undetected or detected but no response; planned an attack which lasted for hours, and rode into the night afterwards like knights. Deeply disturbing. And fatally embarrassing.

What happened to the so-called game-changing Super Tucanos and other military hardware procured by the administration with a boast that the insurgents and bandits would be pulverised? So far, the government has spent N4 trillion on defence in seven years, yet there is no interlude of peace.

President Muhammadu Buhari must go beyond the expression of shock, airy statements, and at least mitigate this challenge before the elections. I believe he would not want to be remembered as Petronius Maximus who technically surrendered Rome to the Vandals.
