Atiku Son Was Allegedly Arrested, Forced To Hospital After 10 Days Of Arrival From UK

Report reaching us indicated that the son of former Nigeria Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, was allegedly picked up by police and forced to do coronavirus test which eventually proved positive, leading to his admission at Gwagwalada Specialist Teaching Hospital, Abuja.

He was said to have returned from the United Kingdom about ten days ago, refused to self-isolate as directed by the government and health authorities, but moved around freely, including clubs, one of which has been closed down. He was also said to be at Jum’at (Friday congregational prayer).

It was gathered that the son, whose name is yet to be made public, was picked up following complaints and outcry of the people in the neighbourhood, who knew that he just returned from UK.

Meanwhile, authorities have called on all those who were at Play Lounge Wuse 2, Abuja, the day Atiku’s son was there to report to appropriate health institutions for test and also to self-isolate.

Atiku, who was also the Presidential flag bearer of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, had earlier today, March 23, announced, through his Tweeter handle, that his son had been tested positive to colonavirus and appealed to Nigerians to pray for him.

75 Coronated Obas Drag Ogun Gov To Court Over Demotion, Demand 11 Month Salary Arrears

Seventy five Coronated Obas, who were recently demoted by Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State have dragged him to court, demanding the payment of 11 month salary arrears from the day they were demoted.
They are seeking the order of the court, amongst others, “compelling the Defendants to pay all remunerations and entitlements due but unpaid to each of the Claimants as Coronet Obas over their respective Communities to the said Claimants from 13th May 2019 when their upgrading, appointment and promotion took effect till date and thereafter.”
Eleven out of the seventy five of them filed a suit on behalf of the entire 75 chiefs appointed as Coronet Obas by the government of Ogun state on May 13, 2019. Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun had upgraded the 75 chiefs from Baales to Obas of their respective domains, saying it was in accordance with the Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2006.
But, Governor Abiodun reversed the upgrade of the said Obas, following the recommendation of a review committee headed by the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.
However, the aggrieved Obas took the complaints to an Ogun State High Court, joining as defendans, the Governor of Ogun State, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, the Ogun House of Assembly and the Attorney General of Ogun State.
In a 27 paragraphed affidavit, the claimants said, “By virtue of the provisions of Section 30 Sub–Sections (1) and (2) of the Chiefs Law of Ogun State 2006, the Executive Council of the Government of Ogun State can only suspend and depose an erring Oba”, saying their demotion was illegal.
In their reliefs, the claimants prayed the court for:
“A Declaration that the purported reversal or revocation of the Claimants upgrading, appointment and promotion as Coronet Obas is a nullity and of no effect whatsoever.
“A Declaration that the Defendants Chieftaincy Review Committee set up to purportedly review the upgrading, appointments and promotion of the Claimants as Traditional Rulers and the activities of the said Committee is an afterthought and a nullity.
“A Declaration that the Defendants are estopped from reversing or revoking the upgrading, appointment and promotion of the Claimants as Coronet Obas in Ogun state and/or preventing Claimants from acting, parading or referring to themselves and being referred to as Coronet Obas of their respective Communities, the said Claimants having been earlier upgraded, appointed and promoted by the Government of Ogun State acting through the Defendants as Coronet Obas over their respective Communities in Ogun State and carrying on the performance of the duties of their offices as Coronet Obas to the knowledge and acknowledgment of the Defendants.
“A Declaration that the Defendants cannot capriciously reverse or revoke the upgrading, appointments and promotions of the Defendants in the absence of any complaint against the upgrading, appointment and promotion of the Claimants duly brought to the attention of the Claimants for their defence/response.
“An Order setting aside the purported reversal or revocation of the Claimants upgrading, appointment and promotion as Coronet Obas in Ogun State.
“An Order compelling the defendants to rescind forthwith, the purported reversal and/or revocation of the upgrading, appointments and promotion of the Claimants as Coronet Obas of their respective Communities.
“An Order Compelling the Defendants to pay all remunerations and entitlements due but unpaid to each of the Claimants as Coronet Obas over their respective Communities to the said Claimants from 13th May 2019 when their upgrading, appointment and promotion took effect till date and thereafter.
“An Order of Perpetual Injunction restraining the Defendants, their privies, agents and servants from interfering in any way or manner whatsoever and howsoever described with the upgrading, appointments and promotion of the Claimants except in accordance with law.
“Costs of this action.”
In an affidavit the first Claimant, who identified himself as Oba Tanimowo David Folarin, the Olu of Ipebi Ijebu Mushin, stated that:
“I was the State Secretary for Council of Baales in Ogun State before the upgrading, appointment and promotion of the entire seventy – five (75) Obas who brought this action.
“I know of the fact that the entire seventy – five (75) Obas concerned with this matter are the Coronet Obas listed in the Ogun State of Nigeria Gazette No. 20 Vol. 44 of 16th May 2019 and cited as ‘Approval of Appointments of minor Chiefs as Coronet Obas Notice No. 3 of 2019’.
“That upon the upgrading, appointment and promotion of we the Claimants by the Government of Ogun State as Coronet Obas, I am aware that letters of appointments were issued to each and every one of us and some of the letters issued to us which are the same in content in every material particular except our respective names and Communities.
“That I know of a fact that as Coronet Obas, the seventy – five Obas (myself inclusive), upgraded, appointed and promoted as Coronet Obas of our respective Communities in Ogun State of Nigeria are the Sovereign Male Obas and Rulers of our respective Kingdoms or Communities from the 13th day of May 2019 till date.
“That I am aware that upon the upgrading, appointment and promotion of the entire seventy–five (75) Obas (including myself) who recently agreed to bring this action, the Claimants have successfully observed and performed the traditional rites of tutelage for newly appointed Obas customarily called ‘Ipebi” in Yoruba land.
“That I know of the fact that the Defendants have threatened and has continued to threaten to issue and serve letters on each of the Seventy – five (75) Coronet Obas that filed this action to prevent or restrain us from acting, parading or referring to ourselves and being referred to as Coronet Obas of our respective Communities despite the fact that the Claimants have observed and performed the traditional rites of tutelage for newly appointed Obas customarily called ‘Ipebi” in Yoruba land.
“That I am aware as an Oba in Yoruba land that the consequences for anyone who observed and performed the ‘Ipebi’ traditional rites without subsequently carrying on and continuing to carry on the duties of an Oba is untimely death.
“That I know of a fact that Oba Babatunde Olutunde Ojelade who is one of the seventy–five (75) appointed Coronet Obas who recently agreed to bring this action died suddenly and untimely at about 11pm on the 16th day of March 2020 when the threats of the Defendants to prevent or restrain us from acting, parading or referring to ourselves and being continuously referred to as Coronet Obas of our respective Communities persisted and continued to reach him.”
It was learnt that “the applicants, through one of their Lawyers, Akin Folarin Esq, have written letters separately addressed to the 1st, 2nd and 4th Respondents requesting that the Respondents rescind their decision to revoke the upgrading, appointment and promotion of the Claimants as Coronet Obas.”
However, “rather than rescind its unlawful decision purportedly reversing/revoking the upgrading, appointment and promotion of the applicants as Coronet Obas, the respondents threatened and has continued to threaten to issue and serve letters on each of the Applicants to prevent or restrain the Applicants from acting, parading or referring to themselves and being continuously referred to as Coronet Obas of their respective Communities
“This is despite the traditional consequences of such a forbearance in Yoruba land being sudden and untimely death on the Applicants who have performed the traditional Ipebi rites for newly appointed Obas in Yoruba land and which threats has resulted in the unfortunate sudden and untimely death of one of the Applicants, many more of whom could die suddenly and untimely unless the Honorable Court intervenes.”
Meanwhile, the claimants, on March 17, filed a motion on notice for an order of interlocutory injunction “restraining the Defendant/Respondents, either by themselves or through their agents, servants, privies or any other person(s) acting for them from preventing Claimants from acting, parading or referring to themselves and being continuously referred to as Coronet Obas of their respective Communities, the said Claimants having been earlier upgraded, appointed and promoted by the Government of Ogun State acting through the Defendants as Coronet Obas over their respective communities in Ogun State and carrying on the performance of the duties of their offices as Coronet Obas to the knowledge and acknowledgment of the Defendants pending the determination of this action.”

Nigeria’s Banks Resolve To Rule Out Profit Motive In Favour Of Coronavirus Battle

Nigeria’s Banks have resolved at a bankers’ Committee meeting today, March 21, to rule out profit motive as the world stands in unison to battle Coronavirus.
A communique emanating from the meeting, copy of which was made available to Greengage Reporters, the Bankers’Committee, comprising mainly of Chief Executivev Officers of Nigerian banks, said that the meeting dealt with the impact of COVID-19 on the banking system in particular and the economy in general.
“The Committee discussed the significant health and economic crisis caused by the novel Corona virus (COVID-19) which has resulted in escalating worldwide infections, deaths, disruptions in global supply chains, travel restrictions and turmoil in the international financial markets. It further noted the policy responses across governments and central banks around the world including the CBN
“It was  resolved  that  the  CBN  and  banking industry will collaborate at this critical moment – with one coherent strategy to provide confidence to  the  customers, counter parties, the public and most importantly, put Nigeria first.
The industry has learnt lessons from previous crisis including the 2008 global financial crisis and the oil price slump of 2016, which will be applicable and position the industry to better deal with this crisis.
“The industry resolved that profit will not be the primary motive at this time. Rather, preserving confidence, financial stability and support for the economy will be the overriding objectives.
“Engagements will be held with correspondent banks, trade  creditors, trading partners regarding existing LC and trade commitments.  The  industry is committed to resolving    these commitments in a comprehensive and orderly way. There will be transparent and open communication with all counterparties
“In view of the significant disruption of the global supply chains, the bankers committee advises Nigerians and companies to begin prioritizing their import needs and focus more on sourcing raw materials and inputs locally.
“The bankers committee noted the success of the CBN’s 43 items policy and encouraged it to strengthen it and other measures targeted at export  promotion  and/or import substitution to position Nigeria as a key global producer and build a self-sufficient economy.
“The Committee further discussed the financial system’s implementation and operationalization of the policy measures earlier announced by the CBN including:
Additional moratorium of 1 year on CBN intervention facilities
Interest rate reduction on intervention facilities from 9% to 5%
Creation of N50 billion targeted credit facility for affected households & SMEs.
Granting Regulatory forbearance to banks to restructure terms of facilities in affected sectors, Strengthening the LOR policy, which is encouraging significant extra lending from banks.
Improving FX supply to the CBN by directing all oil companies (international and domestic) and all related companies (oil service) to sell FX to CBN and no longer NNPC.
Activation of the N1.5 trillion lnfraCo Project for building critical infrastructure;
N1.0 Trillion to healthcare loans to pharmaceutical companies, healthcare  practitioners intending to expand/build capacity;
N1 trillion in loans to boost local manufacturing and production across critical sectors:
“The combination of these measures amounts to over N3.5 trillion in stimulus to the Nigerian economy to ameliorate the pains arising from the COVID-19 health.
“Given that this crisis is first and foremost a public health crisis, we are paying particular attention to our health industry. As aforementioned, global supply chains have been disrupted including dominant drug supply channels from China and India. In fact, many countries have or are planning to ban export of drugs and medical supplies from their countries. Clearly, we have no choice but to produce these items locally.
“Thus the Committee has identified a few key local pharmaceutical companies who shall be granted Naira and FX funding facilities to support procurement of raw materials and equipment required to exponentially increase local drug production in Nigeria. These include but are not limited to Emzor, Fidson, GSK, May & Baker, Unique Pharma, Swiss Pharma,  Neimeth,        Sagar,  Orange Drugs, Dana Pharma, etc.”

How Nigerian Journalists Exploit International Sympathy Whenever They Dish Out Fake News – Garba Shehu

Shehu Garba

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu has painted a picture of Nigerian journalists running to seek international sympathy whenever they dish out fake and hate news and are being made to face the consequences.

“Nigerian journalists have learnt to exploit international sympathy in such situations, crying media harassment and death of press freedom, instead of owning up to their errors of judgement and facing punishment from the judiciary.

Garba Shehu, in a paper presentation entitled Media and Democracy: Challenges of Journalism, at the 2020 Annual Lecture of the Abuja Branch of the Barewa Old Boys Association today, March 21, insisted that the media should be held accountable for misinformation capable of causing devastating consequences on the nation, economy and individuals.

He daid that any attempt to hold the media accountable or punish libelous publication in Nigeria should not be automatically regarded as an attack on journalism and press freedom.

The presidential spokesman also called for better remuneration of journalists in the country, warning that poor and backlog of unpaid salaries expose media practitioners to corruption.

Shehu, who spoke in his capacity as a journalist and media practitioner, with over three decades of experience in the profession, described social media as a powerful tool for people-oriented governance.

He said that social media  has made the role of the traditional media ”complex”, even as he cautioned that ‘‘media recklessness’’ can cause devastating consequences on the polity.

”The social media is like a rogue elephant that seems out of control. But despite this notorious image, social media are powerful platforms.

”They enable politicians and activists to engage directly with the people. Besides, groups that are marginalized by the traditional media use the social media to get their voices heard.”

He gave several anecdotes of how journalists in the country had deceived the unsuspecting public with false narratives passing as truth.

The spokesman cited the recent report of a national daily that Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church was denied visa by the U.S Embassy and how another national daily falsely feasted on how a former minister of FCT collapsed and was flown abroad for treatment after seeing a tortoise on his office seat.

The presidential spokesman also used the opportunity to weigh-in substantially on the social media bill before the National Assembly.

”At the recent public hearing by the National Assembly on the draft, private member’s bill on social media, more than 100 activist groups presented a demand that there should be no law.

”This is in spite of a public opinion survey conducted by NOIPolls revealing that new media (social media, blogs, etc.) is a major breeding ground for fake news in the country as indicated by 67 per cent of Nigerians.

”Nigerian journalists have learnt to exploit international sympathy in such situations, crying media harassment and death of press freedom, instead of owning up to their errors of judgement and facing punishment from the judiciary.

”There is hardly a week without my getting a call from Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) asking some of the silliest questions about a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in a faraway local government asking to see a journalist over a published report.

”Or questions about a former journalist, a presidential candidate in his conduct as a politician making all sorts of suggestions that he cannot be questioned by the law because he practiced as a journalist in the past.

”To cut a long story short, the difficulty of the government in a democracy like Nigeria is how to strike a balance between press freedom, and a sometimes corrupt and dangerously reckless media.”

On press freedom, Shehu declared that since the return to democracy in 1999 the Nigerian media enjoyed greater freedom than they had under military rule.

”Freedom, like power, is however, subject to abuse. For the media to contribute to the success of democracy, they must inform the people accurately.

”They must reflect on the diversity of society while playing the role of information dissemination. Media practitioners shouldn’t be religious and ethnic crusaders, supporting one side against another, thereby escalating tensions and conflicts in society.

”The pursuit of political agenda can fundamentally compromise the role of the media in deepening democracy.”

On remuneration of journalists, Garba Shehu, who was once President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors said: “we have media workers who are poorly paid, when and how they are paid.

”It is said that certain media organizations in the country had the practice of telling newly-recruited reporters to not expect salaries, that the official ID card was their meal ticket.

”Late MKO Abiola used to say that you must pay your journalists well otherwise someone will pay them and they will work for him.

”It then follows that journalists poorly paid or not paid at all are paid by news sources to print and not to print.

”It is hard to think of an unpaid journalist, hungry that can be steadfast in standing by their ethics. An Arab proverb says a hungry man can fight the king.”
