How Soldiers Opened Fire On Police Officers That First Arrested Me – Wadume

Wadume

Suspected kidnap kingpin, who has been rearrested by the Nigeria Police in Kano, Bala Hamisu, alias Wadume, has confessed that friendly soldiers opened fire on police officers that first arrested him and then unchained him.

Wadume, who was re-arrested by police officers in his hideout in Kano yesterday evening, August 19, was quoted by the spokesman of the Force headquarters, Frank Mba as saying: “my name is Hamisu Bala Wadume. Police came to arrest me, When they arrested me, army chased after them and opened fire.
“From there, they (soldiers) took me to their headquarters, and cut up my handcuffs. I went back to my house and police came to re-arrest me.”
Frank Mba had said on August 7 that policemen from the Intelligence Response Team who were taking Wadume to the command headquarters in Jalingo were attacked by soldiers.
The police officers were shot dead while the suspect was set free. The army, however, said the policemen were mistaken for kidnappers.

Ekwerenmadu Curses Kanu, Says “I Leave Him To Repercussions Of Ingratitude”

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has raised curses on the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

“What we will do in this circumstance is to leave him to his conscience, the verdict of history, and possibly the repercussions of ingratitude. But I hope he won’t go to the extent of attacking any of the South East leaders anywhere.”

Senator Ekwerenmandu, who was violently attacked by members of the IPOB in Germany where he was invited to deliver a lecture on a programme organized by Igbo people in that country, said that he had no regrets speaking for justice for Ndigbo and helping to facilitate Kanu’s release from detention.

The Senator, who arrived today, August 19, from that unfortunate trip to Germany, said  that the attitude of his assailants in Germany did not represent the dispositions and behaviour of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

“I think they were just people, who were misdirected and misguided. I had the feeling they were under the influence of alcohol. They don’t represent the feelings of our people. There is nothing to worry about.

“The organizers, the Igbo in Germany, have written a letter apologising for what happened. Everybody is free to go anywhere because those ones don’t represent the behaviour of Nigerians abroad.

“For me, I have moved on. The government and authorities of Germany are free to do whatever they wish about it”, he said.

Senator Ekwerenmadu said that believed in justice for all irrespective of tribe, religion or region.

“First of all, I am a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. My job is to speak out when there is injustice anywhere. We have problem in the North East. I have visited the North East.

“I visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps there. I donated money. I sent relief materials. We had problem in the South-South, I visited the creeks and saw the environmental challenges there for myself.

“I was one of the few people the late President Musa Yar’Adua consulted before he decided on the issue of amnesty. I was the person, who advised him that he needed to call a meeting of the Council of State. So, he had to invite the then Attorney General to discuss that issue with me and I advised them on the constitutional implications of amnesty.

“So, I have always spoken out on matters that concern Nigerians no matter where they come from. I believe in justice for all. It had nothing to do with IPOB”, he added.

Redeemed Church Owed Me N17 Million, Chased Me Out Of N15 Million House I built – Pastor

A 55-year-old pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Bayo Akinjiyan has written an open letter to the leadership of the church asking that he should be paid the sum of N17 million which the church owes him, even as he complained about how he was ejected by the church from a N15 million house he built with his money in Lagos.

In the letter, which he addressed directly to the RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, pastor Bayo said that since he resigned from the church in 2013 after attaining the position of an assistant provincial pastor at Lagos Province 25,  he is yet to be paid what the church owes him.

“After waiting for over two years as my grievances had yet to be addressed, I decided to write an open letter to the leader of the church.”

Pastor said that after his resignation and exit from the church, he was forced to vacate a N15 millioin house he personally built on Plot 15, Diligence Road, Redemption Camp on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, in line with the policy of the church that a non-member has no right to own any building at the camp.
He said that after handing over the property to the church, the receipt was yet to be acknowledged by the authorities of the church, even as he claimed that he is also being owed consultancy fees amounting to N2 million for projects designed, supervised and or managed by him since 2012.
His letter reads in part: “First, I want to address the attitude and response of the authorities and leadership of the Redeemed Christian Church of God over the house on Plot 15, Diligence Road, Redemption Camp Estate, Redemption Camp, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that I handed over to them upon my voluntary exit from the church after 23 years of meritorious service and having risen to the position of assistant provincial pastor.

“This was contained in my letter of resignation, dated November 3, 2013. That I gave my best in this adventure was alluded to by the church in the letter of release, dated March 11, 2014, which states inter alia, ‘…We wish to appreciate you for your contributions to this ministry and we pray that God will reward and support you in your future endeavours…’

“Secondly, the attitude and response of the Board of Governors of Christ the Redeemers College, Sagamu, Ogun State Nigeria — a private secondary school operated by Christ the Redeemer’s Ministries, an affiliate of RCCG, over an unpaid consultancy fees on projects designed, supervised and or managed by me since 2012.

“I know the implications of my actions and having fully weighed my options, I hereby accept full responsibilities for my actions. My decision to inform the Christian community and the larger society is not aimed at destroying or tarnishing the image of anyone or maligning the church that once gave me fire, but rather, it is aimed at putting records straight and satisfying my God and my conscience.

“I have prayed over this matter, consulted those that I needed to, and I’ve come to the conclusion that God is on the side of those who have a right standing with Him.

“Let us address the first issue — the house at Redemption Camp. In line with the policy of the RCCG mission on those who build on its land, the keys to the house on the above mentioned location, which is a five-bedroom house (all en-suite), valued by a firm of chartered estate surveyors at N15.5m as of December 5, 2011, were submitted to the church through my letter to the General Overseer, dated March 4, 2014 upon my voluntary exit.

“Reminders were also sent through four other letters dated September 2, 2015, January 2, 2016, March 10, 2016, and June 27, 2016. Of all these letters and reminders, the only response I had was a letter dated October 9, 2015, acknowledging the letter of September 2, stating as follows: “We wish to inform you that the issues raised in your letter have been referred to concerned officials for their comments and response. We shall get back to you as we receive feedback and further directives from the mission authority.”

The pastor added:“Almost a year down the line, I am still waiting. My request was that the church should at least officially acknowledge the receipt of the house, even if there is no form of compensation.

“The God who built that for me can always give me a better one. This is my belief. The need to acknowledge the takeover of the house becomes necessary for at least two reasons: first, when I get to heaven (and by the grace of God I will make it), there will be an official and authentic record from RCCG in my favour, of the house that was forfeited to her as a result of doing the will of the Master here on earth.

“Secondly, it is to my knowledge that properties said to belong to the leadership of the church or that of the RCCG Mission sometimes allegedly, carelessly and surreptitiously fall into wrong hands.

“In view of this development, the question is: Is Pastor Adeboye even aware of this house in question of having been handed over to RCCG?

“If yes, has he given an instruction for my request to be granted? If yes, what is delaying his instruction from being carried out almost a year after? If no action has been taken with all these efforts of mine, what is the reason for this?”

Yes, Chief Of Staff Wrote Letter To Fowler, But He’s Not Being Investigated – Presidency

Shehu Garba

The Nigeria’s Presidency has admitted that Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari actually wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler over the fall in revenue but that he is not under any investigation.

A statement today, August 19, by the senior special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, stressed that the letter from the Chief of Staff merely raised concerns over the negative run of the tax revenue collection in recent times.

“Taking a cue from today’s (Monday) presentation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo   at the Presidential Retreat for Ministers-Designate, Federal Permanent Secretaries and Top Government Functionaries , which dwelt on an  ‘Overview of the Policies, Programmes and Project Audit Committee, a body he chaired,  projected revenue of government  falls behind recurrent expenditure even without having factored in capital expenditure.

“Consequently, it would appear that the country might be heading for a fiscal crisis if urgent steps are not taken to halt the negative trends in target setting and target realisation in tax revenue.

“Anyone conversant with Federal Executive Council deliberations would have observed that issues bordering on revenue form the number one concern of what Nigeria faces today, and therefore, often take a prime place in discussions of the body.

“It is noteworthy and highly commendable that under this administration, the number of taxable adults has increased from 10 million to 20 million with concerted efforts still on-going to bring a lot more into the tax net.”

Germany Deports Many Nigerians Whose Asylum Applications Have Expired

German Chancellor, Angela Merke

German government has deported a new batch of Nigerian migrants whose asylum applications have expired. The affected migrants, according to information reaching us, have already left Frankfurt Airport and headed to Nigeria’s Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos

The number of migrants deported was not ascertained as at the time of this report, but it was gathered that they were picked randomly from different accommodation centres.

It would be recalled that only last month, two batches of Nigerians were sent back home from the European country.

Co-ordination Activist for Network Refugees 4Refugees, a political platform for refugees and migrant self-organization based in Stuttgart, Germany, Rex Osa, said that those who are being deported were picked randomly from their different accommodation centres from in different regions and conveyed to a central place and finally to Frankfurt Airport.

“When their asylum application is already expired, they are obligated to leave the country.

“For those who don’t leave voluntarily, they will be given what I can translate in English to mean toleration status. This status is not a resident title; it is to show that the person is still there because the deportation is hindered because of one reason or the other.

“These people are picked up early in the morning without expecting the police. Some would be picked up from work also. When the police arrive in their rooms, they would be allowed to pack things not more than say 64 kilos. The police will be standing to make sure the person does not escape.”

Ministerial Retreat Aims At Setting Agenda For Next 4-Year Of Buhari’s Govt – SGF

Boss Mustapha

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has reminded the ministers designate that the ministerial retreat being conducted before their assumption of office is aimed at setting agenda for the next four-year second tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

“It is expected that the outcome of this retreat will set a strategic agenda which would define our course of action for the next four years of the Administration, set achievable targets and identify basic strategic options that will assist the new cabinet realize the goals for which the Administration was elected to achieve.”

Boss Mustapha, in his welcome address at the retreat being held in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, beginning today, August 19, said also that the objective of the retreat is to prepare the new cabinet in driving and coordinating the affairs and activities of the various socio-economic and political spheres of the nation.

According to him, the retreat will afford participants the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their roles and responsibilities as cabinet ministers, “an understanding that will help to shape and streamline efforts towards achieving the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people of Nigeria.

“The Federal Executive Council, referred to in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as the Executive Council of the Federation, is the principal instrument of policy decisions for the Federation, being the body charged with the responsibility for enunciating policies on matters to which the executive authority of the Federation extends.

“Section 148 Subsection 1&2 (a-c) defines the responsibilities of the Federal Executive Council. It stipulates that the President shall hold regular meetings with the Vice President and all the Ministers of the Government of the Federation for the purposes of:

determining the general direction of domestic and foreign policies of the Government of the Federation;

coordinating the activities of the President, the Vice President and the Ministers of the Government of the Federation in the discharge of their executive responsibilities; and

advising the President generally in the discharge of his executive functions with respect to which he is required by the constitution to seek the advice or act on the recommendation of any other person or body.”

Boss Mustapha said that ministers are collectively responsible for policy decisions in Council, adding that though individual minister could differ in opinion during deliberations on any proposal before Council, but that once a decision is taken, it becomes a binding Council decision. “That no Minister can speak against either in public or private, no matter the argument he/she presented during discussion on the proposal.

“This principle of collective responsibility also infers that a Minister has responsibilities wider than those relating to his/her assigned portfolio and will, in that capacity, receive documents from other Ministers/Ministries, which do not concern the subjects under his/her portfolio, requiring his/her consideration and contribution during the weekly Council meetings.

“It is in this wise that this retreat was conceptualized in three thematic phases comprising, a Context Setting segment, which will be led by His Excellency, the Vice President and supported by our team of consultants, Messrs. Mckinsey & Co. and KPMG. The second thematic area involves articulating the priorities of Government and target setting, encompassing all sectors of our national life. This segment is principally designed to be more interactive, setting the values of team work as your appointments demand, which will be demonstrated by your involvement in syndicated breakout sessions focused on topics across defined Government priority areas. The first day will close with presentations at plenary of group outcomes arising from the syndicated discussions on priority areas.”

INEC Describes Atiku’s Move To Unseat Buhari At Tribunal As Mission Impossible

INEC Boss, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has described the move by the Presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to unseat President Muhammadu Buhari through the electoral tribunal, after winning the 2019 election, as a mission impossible

“…and the aim of the petitioner (Atiku) is to use them (witnesses) to prove allegations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act during the Presidential Elections in 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. What a mission impossible!”

INEC, in a final written address it filed before the Justice Mohammed Garba-led five-member Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, through its lawyers, led by Mr. Yunus Usman (SAN), said that it was satisfied that Atiku did not secure majority of lawful votes cast during the election.

The electoral umpire denied the allegation that votes were illegally awarded to the All Progressives Congress (APC), to ensure that President Buhari was re-elected for a second term, insisting that the petitioners failed to justify why a fresh election should be conducted.

“We refer to the relevant paragraphs of the petition where the petitioners made the sundry allegations of deliberate wrong entry/falsification of election results by the 1st Respondent.

“Clearly, it can be gleaned that nothing concrete or specific has been offered by the Petitioners in this regard.

“For example, the petitioners pleaded wrong and deliberate entry of wrong results by the 1st Respondent in 11 states of the country, namely: Borno, Yobe, Bahchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and Zamfara States.

“Thereafter, the petitioners proceeded to break down this allegation State by State.

“However, a cursory appraisal of paragraph 155(4) of the petition dealing with this allegation of ‘posting wrong results’ to the non-existent 1st Respondent’s server and not the wrongful entry of the results in the physical /manual Form EC8 series.

“The most astonishing part is that the petitioners failed to call witnesses who were at the various Units to observe these various alleged anomalies.

“We submit that allegations bordering on alleged wrong entry/falsification of election result are criminal in nature and must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

“Furthermore, by virtue of section 150(1) of the Evidence Act, the results declared by the 1st Respondent enjoy a presumption of regularity. Accordingly, the petitioners herein are duty bound to rebut this presumption with credible evidence”.

The electoral commission said Atiku failed to show how the number of votes cancelled affected the votes he got.

“We submit that it is trite law that not only is the petitioner duty-bound to prove each and every allegation on non-compliance; he is also expected to prove that such non-compliance substantially affected the result of the election. See BUHARI V OBASANJO (supra), NYESOM WIKE V DAKUKU &ORS (supra).

“We humbly submit from the foregoing that the petitioners have failed to prove the allegation of non-compliance with the Electoral Act, and indeed every other allegation contained in the petition. The petition, therefore, lacks merit and should be thrown out on this point and this honourable court is urged so to do.

“In the instant petition, the petitioners called 62 witnesses in proof of their petition. Only 5 were polling agents, while 5 were Assistant Presiding Officers, who incidentally had no problem with the conduct of the election but only came to assert that they transmitted the election result to a fictitious and non-existent server.

“The rest of the witnesses called are Ward, Local Government, State or National Collation Agents. And the aim of the petitioner is to use them to prove allegations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act during the Presidential Elections in 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. What a mission impossible!

“The eyes of the parties and candidates in an election at the Polling Unit are their respective agents and voters who were present to cast their votes. Consequently, in calling witnesses in proof of these allegations, these class of individuals are indispensable.

“Taking a rational, reasonable and critical examination and assessment of the evidence placed before this honorable court, one cannot but submit most humbly that the elements of the allegations of corrupt practices against the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Respondents have not been proved at all talk less of proof beyond reasonable doubt.”

Those Who Attacked Senator Ekwerenmadu Face 10 Year Jail In Germany

Nigerians, opefating under the auspices of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), who attacked former Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Germany are facing a possible 10 year imprisonment according to that country law.

In a statement today, August 19, the Embassy of Nigeria in Berlin, Germany said that the suspects will be prosecuted by the German government to serve as deterrence to others who may be planning such assault.

Under German laws, physical assaults are punishable by fines or imprisonments of up to 10 years, depending on the gravity.

The statement reads: “The Embassy of Nigeria, Berlin, Germany wishes to react to viral videos of a vicious physical attack on the immediate past Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate and serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu, by some members an illegal and terrorist entity named Indigenous Peoples of Biafra ( POB) in Nuremberg on 17th August 2019.

“The attack happened at an event organised by Nigerians in Germany under the auspices of a socio-cultural organisation known as Ndigbo Germany, a registered entity in the Federal Republic of Germany.

“Invitations were extended to Nigerian dignitaries, including the Distinguished Senator and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

“The Nigerian Ambassador also honoured the invitation but arrived at the venue shortly after the incident.

“The organisers reportedly requested for police protection to ensure public order during the event but were told that the threat level was minimal and did not require stationing of any personnel at the venue before the incident.

“The Embassy has requested a thorough investigation of this attack with a view to identifying the perpetrators and bringing them swiftly to justice in accordance with German law.

“This would deter future acts of violence against officials of the Nigerian Government on German soil particularly against the backdrop of threats by the proscribed IPOB to carry out similar attacks on more Nigerian dignitaries, especially those from the South Eastern part of the country.”

With Population Explosion, It’s Dangerous To Rely On Foreign Handouts To Develop – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that with expected population explosion in Nigeria, it would be dangerous to rely on handouts from foreign development partners to solve some of the challenges confronting the nation.

President Buhari, who spoke today, August 19, at the opening of a two-day retreat for ministers designate and other top government officials at the presidential villa, Abuja, asked the incoming ministers to get ready towards delivering policies and programs of his government meant to lift many Nigerians out of poverty.

“We are all aware of the looming demographic potential of our country. By average estimates, our population is close to 200 million today. By 2050, UN estimates put Nigeria third globally behind only India and China with our projected population at 411 million.

“This is a frightening prospect but only if we sit idly by and expect handouts from so-called development partners. The solution to our problems lies within us.
“As Ministers, I am counting on you together with Advisers and Nigerians willing and able to contribute to build upon our road map of policies, programmes and projects that will lift the bulk of our people out of poverty and set them on the road to prosperity.”

The President said that his government cumulatively in eight years, would have laid the grounds for lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty, adding that such outcome will fundamentally shift Nigeria’s trajectory and place it among the World’s Great Nations.

Buhari who reminded the ministers designate that they will be responsible for the development and implementation of policies, programmes and projects in their various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), said that they must ensure that such agencies remain effective, efficient and accountable in the discharge of their responsibilities.

“It is a great privilege for you to be called upon to serve in these Great Offices of State and you must grasp the chance with two hands and put in your best efforts as Nigeria today needs top managers to handle our numerous challenges. There will be long hours and you must be prepared to live laborious days if we are to serve our people optimally.

“I congratulate all the new comers who your country has chosen above others to join the first term Ministers whose performance has been outstanding. All of you are appointed to assist and advise the President in running the affairs of our country.

“At the end of the Retreat, it is hoped that all of you will be in tune with the roles and responsibilities of positions you will occupy in Government. Many national issues require unified decisions,” President said.

Buhari enjoined the ministers designate to encourage team work, saying that his government succeeded in the last four years in rolling back the frontiers of terrorism; and actively addressing other challenges such as kidnappings, farmer-herder violence, improving the safety of our roads, railways, air traffic and fire control capacities.

“We are steadily turning the economy round through investment in agriculture and manufacturing, shoring up our foreign reserves, curbing inflation and improving the country’s infrastructure.

“On corruption, we have recovered hundreds of billions of stolen assets and are actively pursuing control measures to tackle leakages in public resources. We will not let up in fighting corruption,” Buhari said.

In his welcome remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha said the objective of this retreat is to prepare the new Cabinet in Buhari’s second tenure, the opportunity to familiarize themselves with their roles and responsibilities as Cabinet Ministers, an understanding that will help to shape and streamline efforts towards achieving the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people of Nigeria.

He said the outcome of the retreat will set a strategic agenda which would define our course of action for the next four years of the Administration, set achievable targets and identify basic strategic options that will assist the new Cabinet realise the goals for which the Administration was elected to achieve.

According to him, the retreat was conceptualized in three thematic phases comprising, a Context Setting segment, led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and supported by Mckinsey & Co. and KPMG as consultants.

“The second segment is principally designed to be more interactive, setting the values of team work as your appointments demand, which will be demonstrated by your involvement in syndicated breakout sessions focused on topics across defined Government priority areas,” Boss noted.

The retreat is expected to end on Tuesday while the ministers will be sworn-in by President Buhari on Wednesday.
