The Nuremberg, German Madness, By Sufuyan Ojeifo

I call it the Nuremberg madness. I solemnly consider it as grotesquely outlandish. It defies all manner of ratiocination and rationalizations. I had read a number of opinions that tended to either draw some bizarre corollary upon which a general warning was issued to other Ibo leaders and leaders of other ethnic nationalities to beware or that tended to justify the wanton assault in the context of the festering socio-political and economic ferment in Nigeria.

It is a no-brainer to surmise that the act of folly that was garbed as ethnic revulsion or contempt for perceived immersion in government or laissez-faire attitude on the part of Ekweremadu to issues that allegedly affect Ndigbo within the Nigerian nation-state was egregiously misplaced. Some had suggested that the attire that Ekweremadu wore that bore the nation’s imprimatur, to wit: the Coat of Arms, and which suggested patriotic support, was the casus belli of the attack.

Regardless, whatever precipitated the harsh reaction by those irate folks in Nuremberg, that thing led to the unconscionable violation of the civility in the atmosphere of Germany that provides a catholic liberty, which John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) in his work: “On Liberty”, recognized as both the freedom to act and the absence of coercion. Whereas those Ibo men had the liberty to act in expression of their displeasure, they did not have liberty to coerce or assault Ekweremadu in the fashion they did.

In fact, in the realm of domestic approbation and appreciation of social-political values, the physical assault of Ekweremadu offended the republican spirit of the Ibo people. In spite of their utmost frustrations, those folks were they resident in Nigeria, and knowing full well that they have the power to vote out leaders in elective offices who fail to provide them with the kind of leadership they desire, should have waited for another general election to vote out leaders who have failed to perform or align with their aspirations.

Instead of the global opprobrium that they had attracted to Ndigbo by their act of idiotic indiscretion, they should have embraced a mature way of passing across their displeasure. For instance, they could have embarked on a systematic campaign of naming and shaming Ibo leaders who have betrayed their people on the altar of filthy lucre; or who have compromised the ideas of Ndigbo for personal aggrandizement with a view to denying them the people’s votes whenever they seek re-validation of their mandates.

That would have been much better than the great disservice to their individualities and, generically, to the pristine tradition of Ndigbo as a politically sophisticated and self-respecting people. Those who attacked Ekweremadu have lost the moral high ground. They have become vermin of a brutish culture that tended to misrepresent the Ibo people as bellicose and sanguinary.

Indeed, it is this kind of combative attitude of both leadership and followership alike, a throwback to the failed attempt to Biafranise Nigeria that has contoured public perceptions of the Ibo persona and mentality within the framework of the Nigerian nation-state as aggressive and aggravating. Having used force and war to no avail to claim their rightful position in the political configuration of the country, a counter strategy of stooping to conquer could have been salutary this time round rather than the continued resort to ballyhoo.

Even if the strategy must be to deploy force in correcting the structural imbalance in the Nigerian federation or addressing the existential problems facing the ethnic nationality, the Ibo would be committing a greater mistake, given their numbers, to push the frontiers of “freedom” as a fractious and separated ethnic nationality of disparate drum majors. That was the point that the Ibo self-acclaimed salvation group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), missed by its alleged directive to its members to humiliate Ekweremadu.

The group’s action was pathetically counter-productive. It gratuitously assaulted one of the leading lights of Ndigbo and by, so doing, suffered a self-inflicted ignominy. Ekweremadu had, without a doubt, been a victim of physical assault by his kinsmen who should have protected him from harm’s way in Nuremberg. But they decided to drag him in the mud to satisfy a fit of anger. But were they given a trophy for so doing? No! Did they receive any well-meaning or well-intentioned accolades? I doubt.

The accolades that appeared to support the Nuremberg madness were wrapped in chicanery by conspiracy theorists merely to promote or champion the advocacy for a civil disorder rather than constitutional means that will upend the nation’s civil authority that is perceived to have failed to address a number of issues to the utilitarian benefit of the Nigerian people.

But, to be sure, that act of folly in Nuremberg parodies our reality as a people. It is a travesty of our collective obscurantist predilection to raise all manner of issues that support our biased positions and suppress those that negate the same. Interestingly, the question now, and this clearly speaks to the perceived irritability of Ndigbo, is why was it that those Ibo folks chose the platform of unity, which the annual Yam festival typified for the ethnic nationality, to brutalise a rallying and uniting personality, thus damaging the fulcrum of unity?

Ekweremadu may not have been the best or perfect paradigm of leadership that has been in a position to be able to minister to or address critical existential issues of the Ibo; there is also no justifiable basis to dismiss him as a selfish leader who, outright, did not promote the interest of Ndigbo.  If he had been an all-round failure in the praxis of pragmatic leadership, let Ndigbo speak out.

Even where and when such allegation of failure cannot be rebutted, nobody, not even the IPoB or any other Ibo group for that matter, has the right to abridge Ekweremadu’s rights of movement, association (in this case, he was invited to attend the event) and expression, let alone the rights to assault him in the sordid way and manner those Ibo folks dealt with him in Nuremberg. I dare say that it was the collective shame of Ndigbo.

In rounding off, I share the position of Nigerians who have condemned, in the strongest terms, the unconscionable assault. I particularly concur with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the Nigerian Ambassador in Germany should work in concert with the German Government to take “appropriate decisive action on the matter”. Those Ibo folks must be dealt with in line with the laws of Germany.

I also agree with the opposition party that the federal government should “take urgent comprehensive steps to address issues leading to acts of resentment and agitations by Nigerians within and outside the country” on the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Nuremberg saga may just be a wake-up call to advert the attention of the federal government to do the needful to douse the rising tension in the country that is triggering harsh reactions from and by “Diasporic Nigerians”.

We’ll Soon Expose Those Behind IPOB’s Attack On Ekwerenmadu – Ohanaeze Youth

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) has said that it had identified the politicians behind the attack on the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekwerenmadu in Germany bby members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and will soon expose them.

The Secretary-General of the OYC, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, at a press briefing in Enugu today, August 18, said that after carrying out an investigation, OYC had identified the sponsors of the attack on Ekweremadu in Nuremberg, Germany and would be exposed soon.

According to him, the action of the IPOB members and their pay masters was all about the 2023 elections.

“This is an affront not just on Ekweremadu but on Ndigbo, which Ekweremadu represents. It is on record that Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu has put his very best in championing Igbo interest in and out of the National Assembly.

“It is therefore a slap on our face for anyone to visit such animalistic treatment on him under whatever guise.

“From our investigation, we understand that this is all about 2023, but we shall soon expose the politicians behind this dance of shame. They hid under the IPOB to perpetrate this global shame.

“On the part of IPOB, for allowing itself to be used, it has touched the tail of a lion. Indeed this shall not be taken for granted.

“If IPOB so love Ndigbo as it claims, what strategy has it put in place to checkmate the excesses of the herdsmen in Igbo land? We repeat, their action was purely sponsored by politicians and they should get ready to hear from us.”

Pastor Confesses Stealing Car Worth N1.2 Million As Tithes Are Not Big Enough

A 41 year old Pastor of Jesus Miracle Church at Afan, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, Jeremiah Ehindero, has confessed that he stole a car worth N1.2 million as his congregation’s tithes and offerings are not enough to pay off a N650,000 bank loan. He also blamed the devil for his action.

The pastor was quoted by the police to have confessed: “I decided to steal the SUV to sell and use the proceeds to settle the N650,000 I borrowed from a microfinance bank in Lagos.

“I borrowed the sum of N650,000 from a microfinance bank to renovate my church with the hope to recover the investment from tithes and offerings, but I was surprised that for three months, no money was realized to repay the loan.

“When the pressure from the microfinance bank became too unbearable for me, the devil told me to go and steal a vehicle from the car dealer to sell and use the proceeds to repay the loan. I regret my action.”

The Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad (FSARS) at Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island, Lagos alleged that Ehindero stole the Toyota Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) from a car dealer and sold it off at Ore, Ondo State, for N600,000.

The police said that they also have in their custody, Ehindero’s alleged accomplices: Lateef Oyetunde who allegedly purchased the SUV from the pastor; Jamiu Abiodun, 35 and Lukman Moyoyesa, who both allegedly introduced Ehindero to the buyer.

However, Oyetunde said that he was not aware that the SUV was stolen, adding: “if I had known that the Pastor stole the SUV, I would not have purchased it.”

The police alleged that Ehindero visited a car sales outlet at Sango-Ota, belonging to one Jamiu. He introduced himself as a cleric and requested for a Toyota Highlander SUV to be used for evangelism.

After the parties agreed a price of N1.2 million for the SUV, the dealer allowed him to test drive the vehicle within the area. But the pastor got into the car and zoomed off, never to return.

According to the police, Ehindero switched off his phone, removed the SUV’s number plate marked ‘LND 816 CK’ and sped off to Ore, where he sold the vehicle to a spare parts dealer for N600,000.

After waiting for 24 hours, the dealer reported the case to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCP) in charge of FSARS, Lagos, Kola Okunola Kamaldeen.

Following investigation, the SUV was tracked to Ondo State and recovered. The buyer and Ehindero’s alleged accomplices were also arrested at the scene, the police said, while the pastor was traced to his residence in Sango-Ota.

A police source said the suspects would be charged to court after conclusion of investigation.

IPOB Threatens To Similarly Attack Nwodo, Umahi, Ikpeazu, Obiano If They Set Foot Abroad

Nnia-Nwodo, President of Ohaneze-Ndigbo

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB, has threatened to launch similar attack on the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, as well as the Governors of Ebonyi, Abia, and Anambra states, among others, any day they are sighted in any public event abroad.

In a statement today, August 18 reacting to the attack on the former Senate Deputy President, Ike Ekwerenmadu in Germany yesterday, August 17, the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said that the group is strategically located in over 100 countries around the world.

Emma Powerful, who patted members of the group on the back that carried out the attack on Ekwerenmadu in Germany, stressed that the attack should serve as a warning to other Igbo leaders, including the governors of the Southeast.

He attributed the attack on Senator Ekwerenmadu to a standing directive that have since been issued by the IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, directing members to hound all instigators of Operation Python Dance.

“Today being the 17th day of August 2019, the Nuremberg IPOB family in Germany in keeping with the long standing directive from our leader to hound all instigators of Operation Python Dance, is glad to report that Ike Ekweremadu was confronted and duly hounded out of a so-called New Yam Festival event in Germany.

“This should serve as a warning to Nnia Nwodo, Dave Umahi, Okezie Ikpeazu, Willie Obiano and co that any day we find them in a public event abroad, they will be humiliated. IPOB is strategically located in over 100 countries around the world. Anywhere we find them, they will be dealt with.”

IPOB announced that it has started its own revolution, adding that things will never be the same again.

“It’s up to other ethnic nationalities to deal with corrupt politicians and merchants of misery within themselves. We have started ours and Nuremberg is only a tip of the iceberg. Let the #Revolution start now.

“With Enugu and Ebonyi State on the verge of capitulation to Fulani criminality, violence and Miyetti Allah domination, conspiratorially complimented by yet another round of military invasion of the East starting tomorrow, our leader shall ventilate these issues and offer guidance on what shall become the fate of corrupt politicians, collaborators and their families whenever they set foot on foreign soil.”

Buhari Never Banned Importation Of Agric Products, Presidency Reacts To Financial Times

Shehu Garba

Nigeria’s presidency has made it clear that at no time President Muhammadu Buhari banned the importation of agricultural products and food items into the country.

Responding to a feature write up in Financial Times of London titled: “Muhammadu Buhari sparks dismay over policy shift on food imports,” the Presidency described the position of the newspaper as “simply incorrect. To be absolutely clear, there is no ban – or restriction – on the importation of food items whatsoever.”
A statement by the senior special assistant to the President on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu said: “President Buhari has consistently worked towards strengthening Nigeria’s own industrial and agricultural base.
“A recent decision sees the Central Bank maintain its reserves to put to use helping growth of domestic industry in 41 product sectors rather than provide FOREX for the import of those products from overseas.
“Should importers of these items wish to source their FOREX from non-government financial institutions (and pay customs duty on those imports – increasing tax-take, something the FT has berated Nigeria for not achieving on many occasions) they are freely able to do so.
“Diversification of FOREX provision towards the private sector and away from top-heavy government control, a diversification of Nigeria’s industrial base, and an increase in tax receipts – are all policies one might expect the Financial Times to support. Yet for reasons not quite clear, the author and this newspaper seem to believe the president’s administration seeks to control everything – and yet do so via policies that relinquish government control.
“We look forward to the next instalment of Mr. Munshi’s bizarre and puzzling article series.”

Group Stages Road Walk In Support Of Gov Yahaya Bello’s Second Term: Rolls Out His Achievements

Members of FairWin on a Road Work in Lokoja, Yesterday.

A group known as Fairwin Support Group has staged a solidarity Roadwalk in support of the re-election bid of the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello.
The group used the opportunity of the road walk to roll out many of the achievements of the governor, including the tackling of insecurity such as armed robbery, kidnapping and others.

The group’s Director General, Mike Onimisi Ajibade commended the governor for restoration of sanity and security of lives and properties in the state, adding: “businesses can now thrive without fears.”
Ajibade said that with Yahaya Bello in the saddle, the state’s Internally Generated Revenue had grown from N300 million  to N1.3 billion and that over 600 unemployed youths have been engaged.
“It is on record that 150 lawyers are engaged to strengthen the judiciary. The Kogi State University, Anyigba now enjoys youthful, vibrant and technologically conscious lecturers.
“The state Ministry of Health and Environment/Natural Resources had it workforces reinvigorated.
“Infrastructure development under Yahaya Bello did not suffer neglect as a lot of multiple road constructions are ongoing concurrently.
“The Kogi state revenue house was constructed within a year. The state school of nursing and midwifery which suffered complete neglect under the previous administrations got rehabilitated to an enviable standard.
“An average of 300 schools benefited from new classrooms being built across the three senatorial districts.
“The establishment of a highly capital intensive Rice processing mill in Kogi West is creating jobs for a lot of youths
“The establishment of Osara Cassava Estate has attracted ethanol producing companies to the state.
“Lokoja, the capital city is gradually becoming an emerging cosmopolitan state with the installation of solar-powered street lights.
“For these and several other developmental strides, The Fairwin support group firmly stand with a detribalised leader who has turned the tides of imbalances in the state.
“We, therefore, enjoin Kogites and delegates to vote for his re-election come August 28’s APC primary and his eventual victory at the November Guber elections.”

Ijaw Youths Chase Asari Dokubo Away From Bayelsa Over Meeting In Support Of Biafra

Members of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Central Zone, have successfully chased away former leader of Niger Delta militants, Alhaji Asari Dokubo who had gathered his people for an expanded inaugural meeting in Yenagoa, the state capital,  in support of the agitation by Igbo people for a Republic of Biafra to be carved out of Nigeria.

Chairman of the IYC, Kennedy Olorogun, who was said to have gotten the wind of the Biafran meeting, mobilised his executive council members and other youths to the venue of the gathering.

Kennedy Olorogun was said to be angry that Dokubo chose Bayelsa, a homogeneous Ijaw State, to hold such a meeting and ordered the Founder of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) to leave the state or face the wrath of the youths.

It was learnt that Dokubo, who recently declared his support for the actualisation of Biafra, gathered over 300 persons from across the states in the South-East and South-South to hold the meeting.

The meeting was reportedly convened under the auspices of the Biafra National Council (BNC) and not the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Confirming the development, Olorogun said that over 300 persons, including Dokubo were already gathered at a hotel in Yenagoa when he led Ijaw youths to the place.

He said quarrel ensued between him and Dokubo when he told the former militant leader that the meeting would not hold in Ijawland.

The timely arrival of police officers was said to have averted what was developing into a bloody clash between the two groups.

Barbaric Attack On Ekwerenmadu Debased Our Values As A People – Senate President

Sen. Ahmed Lawan

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has described the attack on the former deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Germany as barbaric which he said has debased our values as civilised people.

In a statement by Ola Awoniyi, his Special Adviser on Media, the Senate President condemned without reservation, such shameful assault on Senator Ekweremadu.
“It is incredibly absurd for anybody to blame the distinguished Senator for the violent criminal activities in his home base, the purported reason cited by the mob for the bewildering attack.
“Senator Ekweremadu, like all his distinguished colleagues in the Ninth Assembly of the Senate, is concerned about the insecurity and other challenges in that area and other parts of Nigeria. Senator Ekweremadu has also been at the forefront of the patriotic efforts to find lasting solutions to the challenges.
“The barbaric attack on Senator Ekweremadu at a forum to which he was invited to contribute to charting a course for the progress and happiness of Ndigbo debase our values as civilised people. It is most reprehensible and should be condemned by all right-thinking Nigerians.”
Senator Ahmed Lawan called on the German authorities to identify those involved in the despicable act so that the law can take its course against them.
This was even as he advised Nigerians to always reflect deeply and broadly before embarking on a course of action.
He appealed to the youth to always ventilate whatever grievances they have along the lines prescribed by the law and recommended by reason and democratic ethos.
The Senate President advised Senator Ekweremadu not to be deterred by the incident from his path of service to his people and Nigerians in general, but to take it as part of the sacrifice of leadership.
Senator Ekweremadu was to give a keynote address yesterday, August 17, at the Second Igbo Annual Cultural Festival and Convention, organised by Ndi-Igbo in Germany when a mob, which identified itself as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) invaded the venue and beat him up, breaking the windscreen of his car and tearing up his dress. He managed to escape what looked like a move to lynch him.

Abike Dabiri Condemns IPOB’s Attack On Ike Ekwerenmadu In Germany

Abike Dabiri-Erewa

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has condemned “in its entirety” the attack by members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra,  on the former deputy senate president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Germany.

In a statement reacting to  a viral video of an attack on the 57-year-old serving Senator in Nigeria, Dabiri-Erewa said that Ekweremadu was attending the 2nd Annual Igbo Cultural Festival in Nuremberg as a speaker/special guest of honour when he was reportedly beaten up.

“The incident is an embarrassment to the country.”

Dabiri said that though reliable sources have said some of those who carried out the attack have been apprehended but stressed the urgent need for drastic action to be taken.

“We call on the German government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that there are consequences for their actions.

“It is also shamefully pathetic that an event which was nobly put together by the Ndi-Igbo community in Germany, whose members make up the majority of Nigerians living in Germany, to amongst other things provide a forum for the Diasporans and various stakeholders to network and to facilitate a better cooperation between German and Nigerian businesses, ended up in such a disgraceful manner.”

She called on Nigerians to be of good behaviour wherever they find themselves because such incidents tarnish the image of the country.

Recall that earlier yesterday, August 17, Ekweremadu was on Saturday physically attacked by the mob while attending a cultural event in Germany.

Mr Ekweremadu, who confirmed the attack in a statement, said the attackers were members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), a South-East secessionist group.

Earlier in the day, the video of his attack was widely circulated on social media.

In the one minute video the mob chanted ‘go back’ while trying to deny Mr Ekweremadu entry.

The lawmaker had initially retreated but later turned back towards the entrance of the venue. In reaction, the men furiously dragged Mr Ekweremadu out of the venue, ripping his cloth.

However, in a statement reacting to the incident, a media aide to the lawmaker, Uche Anichukwu, claimed Mr Ekweremadu was well received by the Ndi-Igbo community in Germany.

The statement said things, however, went out of hand when members of IPOB frontally denied the lawmaker entry to the venue of an event to which he was invited to deliver a speech.
