Reconstitute Universities Governing Councils, ASUU Begs Tinubu

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) has called on the Federal Government to reconstitute the governing councils of its universities.

In a joint statement signed by Prof. Nuruddeen Al-Mustapha and Mr. Shaibu Sadiku, the Chairman and Secretary respectively, the chapter appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider their plea.

The union emphasized the importance of reconstituting the councils to ensure the legal and smooth operation of universities, in compliance with established procedures and to maintain their autonomy and integrity. ASUU-UDUS also urged the Ministry of Education to investigate recent violations of the law by various universities in the absence of governing councils.

Highlighting the dissolution of all Federal University Governing Councils in June 2023 by the National Universities Commission (NUC), ASUU-UDUS emphasized the need to adhere to proper procedures outlined in university laws.

The union condemned unauthorized advertising of vacancies for Vice-Chancellors and other Principal Officers, stating that such actions undermine transparency, equity, and merit-based selection processes.
