Publishers of online newspapers are set to formally launch their umbrella association, known as Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) on Thursday, October 22 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
A statement by the Secretary General of the Guild, Mr. Dotun Oladipo today said that the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) will deliver the keynote address at the event, which will be attended by top government officials, governors, chief executives of corporations and media chiefs, among others.
The statement said that former Chairman of Punch Newspapers, Ajibola Ogunshola, will be the Chairman even as the Chairman of Zinox Group, Leo Stan Ekeh, and the Chairman of Channels Television, John Momoh, will be guest speakers.
The statement described GOCOP as a non-governmental, non-partisan, non profit making organization for the highest strata of working journalists who have attained the exalted position of Editors in the journalism profession and have delved into online publishing.
It said that the primary objectives of the organization are to ensure that online publishers uphold the tenets of journalism and provide a platform for peer review, even as it quoted the Chairman of the launch committee, Chijama Ogbu as saying: “it is our goal to provide orderliness in the practice if online media business, which currently boasts of a high population of charlatans.
“We believe it is important to provide a platform for journalists in this business to come together to set barometers of compliance with the ethical codes of journalism.” [myad]
