Angry Obama Sacks 35 Russian Officials From US Over Presidential Election Cyberattack

Obama-Putin

In a sweeping response to election hacking, President Barack Obama of America today, Thursday sanctioned Russian intelligence services and their top officials, kicked out 35 Russian officials and shuttered two Russian-owned compounds in the U.S.

It was the strongest action the Obama administration has taken to date to retaliate for a cyberattack.

In a statement released while he was vacationing in Hawaii, Obama cried out: “All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions. Such activities have consequences.”

Obama ordered sanctions against two Russian intelligence services, the GRU and the FSB, plus companies which the U.S. says support the GRU.

The 35 Russian diplomats being kicked out are intelligence operatives, Obama said. The State Department said they were being declared “persona non grata,” and they were given 72 hours to leave the country.

The two compounds being closed down are recreational facilities owned by Russia’s government, one in Maryland and one in New York, the U.S. said. The White House said Russia had been notified that Russia would be denied access to the sites starting noon on Friday.

The cybersecurity firm hired by the Democratic National Committee to investigate theft of its emails determined earlier this year the hacking came from the Fancy Bear group, believed to be affiliated with the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency.

The president also sanctioned Lt. Gen. Korobov, the head of GRU, and three of his deputies. Other individuals sanctioned include Alexei Belan and Yevgeny Bogachev, two Russian nationals who have been wanted by the FBI for cyber crimes for years.

Obama said the hacking “could only have been directed by the highest levels of the Russian government,” a contention the U.S. has used to suggest Russian President Vladimir Putin was personally involved.

Although the White House announced at the same time that it was kicking out Russian officials and closing facilities, it said those were responses to other troubling Russian behavior: harassment of U.S. diplomats by Russian personnel and police.

Russian officials have denied the Obama administration’s accusation that the Russian government was involved at the highest levels in trying to influence the U.S. presidential election.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia’s goal was to help Donald Trump win — an assessment Trump has dismissed as ridiculous.

The move puts the president-elect in the position of having to decide whether to roll back the measures once in office. [myad]

ahmet-sik-turkey-journalist

Turkey Government has reportedly arrested a prominent Turkish author, journalist and government critic, Ahmet Sik. He was arrested in Istanbul, the capital of Turkey.
Ahmet Sik said in a Tweet: “I have been arrested,” adding that one of his earlier tweets on Twitter seemed responsible for drawing the attention of the state prosecutor.
There was no detailed information about the arrest.
Since a mid-July coup attempt, Turkish authorities have come down hard against critics of the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The investigative journalist has for years, strongly criticized the movement led by exiled Islamic cleric, Fethullah Gulen, which Erdogan has blamed for the failed July 15 coup.
Ahmet Sik has also attacked the ruling AKP party for supporting Gulen until a rift between Gulen and Erdogan became public in 2013.
Prior to that break, Ahmet Sik spent nearly a year in detention in 2011 for the Imam’s Army, his book about the Gulen movement, which was banned from publication.
“To discuss the Gulen movement while at the same time ignoring the AKP’s complicity in it is a huge omission,” he wrote in the book.
Earlier this year, he wrote that “Gulen and Erdogan should both be tried in court for their hand in the organization.” [myad]

Nigerian Army Says Shekau’s New Video On Sambisa Forest Is Mere Propaganda

Colonel Sani Usman

The Nigerian Army has described the video purportedly released by the Boko Haram showing Abubakar Shekau countering the successful take-over of Sambisa Forest in Borno State from them as “mere terrorist propaganda.”

A statement by Brigadier-General Sani Usman in Abuja today, Thursday, said the attention of the Nigerian Army had been drawn to the video clip released by the group from an undisclosed location, showing its purported leader, making spurious claims.

“While effort is on going to subject the video for further forensic analysis, the Nigerian Army wishes to reiterate that it has captured and occupied the last known stronghold of the terrorists group in the Sambisa forest.

“We would like to reassure the public that this video is nothing but mere terrorists propaganda aimed at creating fear in the mind of people and to remain relevant.

“Therefore, there is no cause for alarm, more so as concerted effort in clearing the vestiges of Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be hiding is ongoing.

“Our gallant troops deployed in various parts of the North-East have continued to intensify the search for all persons associated with Boko Haram terrorist group with a view to bringing them to justice.”

Brigadier General Usman advised members of the public to go about their normal lawful business, remain vigilant and be security conscious, adding that any suspicious person or group of persons should be reported to the security agencies. [myad]

No Plastic But Contaminated Rice In Nigeria – NAFDAC

RiceThe National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said that laboratory result of the suspected fake rice showed that the product was not plastic but rice contaminated with micro organisms.

The NAFDAC Acting Director General, Yetunde Oni, in a news conference along with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Abuja, said that the seized rice was unsatisfactory and therefore unwholesome for human consumption.

She explained that the product branded ”Best Tomato,” was in 25kg bag, without NAFDAC number, batch number, date markings and details of the manufacturer.

She said that while `floating’ was negative, sedimentation was positive even as cooking was normal; odour was normal, colour was off-white and E-coli was within specification.

She said that lead and cadmium were not detected, pre-ashing was normal, ash, moisture and mould were within specification but coli form was above maximum limits.

Oni called on the public to report suspicious cases about all NAFDAC regulated products to any of the offices across the nation for prompt regulatory action.

She gave the following numbers for members of the public who have cause to call for enquiries: 08013630600, 09094262773 and 08033112282.

The Comptroller-General, NCS, Colonel Hameed Ali, said that irrespective of the outcome of the laboratory analysis, customs would remain vigilant and alive to its responsibilities.

Ali, who was represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General, Tariff and Trade, Umar Iya, said NCS was guided by intelligence reports.

”Intelligence reports indicate that several metric tonnes of expired and dangerous rice are still lying in wait in warehouses in neighbouring countries and the target of the products is the Nigerian market.”

Ali said that the NCS would intensify patrols to ensure that such economic saboteurs do not succeed even as he called on the warehouse owners and transporters across the country not to accept such smuggled products in their facilities or vehicles respectively.

He warned that both the smuggled products and means of conveyance were liable to seizure. [myad]

Group Says Rivers South East PDP Is Suffering From Election Defeat Hangover

Magnus AbeThe Media Committee of Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, Senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the area is still suffering from election defeat hangover by ascribing the mandate given to Senator Abe in the December 10 re-run election as concocted.
In a statement by Senator Abe’s spokesman, Parry Saroh Benson, the group said that the PDP and Governor Nyesom Wike know that Senator Abe won the election.
“They should learn to accept defeat and respect the will of the people of the district, thereby deepening democracy in the state.

“It is pertinent to state that any attempt to deride the victory of Senator Abe and heap insult on his person will create schismatic effect on the unity and interest of the state.

“The problem with the PDP and Gov. Wike is that they are yet to recover from the hangover of the defeat they suffered at the election. It is our sincere advice to them to accept that in any political contest and even in sports, a winner must emerge. A winner has emerged in the person of Senator Abe. Throwing tantrums on the winner will not help matters rather it will drift the state to the precipice.

“They are still regretting the huge taxpayer’s money wasted in the district to stop Senator Abe; the discomfiture of their planned violence, ballot box snatching and intimidation of the people but for security that was adequate to guarantee everyone his or her vote.

“We call on Rivers people and the people of Rivers South East to ignore the tirades of Felix Obuah, Gov. Wike and their cohorts, whom we learnt had strategized to demonize Senator Magnus Abe so that he cannot savour on his hard won victory.”

The group appealed to the people of Rivers South East to remain calm despite provocative comments and casting of aspersions on their illustrious son, adding that all the campaigns of calumny are intended to distract Senator Abe from focusing on attaining his campaign promises.

“Such plot has failed and will continue to fail as the finger of God is on the emergence of Senator Abe.” [myad]

We Are Still In Sambisa, Not Crushed: Boko Haram’s Leader, Shekau Says In New Video

Abubakar Shekau

Boko Haram’s elusive leader, Abubakar Shekau has appeared in a new video on Thursday, claiming that his members of his group were still very much in Sambisa Forest and not crushed as claimed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “we are safe. We have not been flushed out of anywhere. And tactics and strategies cannot reveal our location except if Allah wills by his decree.”

In the 25-minute video, flanked by armed fighters, Shekau said: “you should not be telling lies to the people. If you indeed crushed us, how can you see me like this? How many times have you killed us in your bogus death?”

It was not immediately clear where the new video was shot, but Shekau who spoke in both Hausa and Arabic said it was filmed on Christmas Day.

Shekau last appeared in a video in September where he disputed a claim by the Nigerian military that he had been wounded in battle.

He vowed to continue fighting on until an Islamic state was imposed in northern Nigeria.

“Our aim is to establish an Islamic Caliphate and we have our own Caliphate, we are not part of Nigeria.”

Buhari had announced that a months-long military campaign in the 1,300 square-kilometre (500 square-miles) forest in northeastern Borno state had led to the “final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest.” [myad]
