Nigerian Christians Raise Eyebrow Over Membership Of International Islamic Group

CAN President Supo

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), an umbrella body of all the Christians in Nigeria has raised eyebrow over the membership of Nigeria in the General Assembly of the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILMC).

In a statement,  Media Assistant to the CAN President, Rev Dr Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, Pastor Bayo Oladeji said that Nigeria’s membership of the IILMC without the backing of the country’s law should be withdrawn with immediate effect.

There have been reports that the IILMC recently appointed the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele as its Chairman during its 17th Governing Board meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia.

IILMC is an international institution established by central banks’ monetary authorities and multilateral organizations to create and issue short-term Shari’ah-compliant financial instruments to facilitate effective cross-border Islamic liquidity management.

“By creating more liquid Shari’ah-compliant financial markets for institutions offering Islamic financial services (IIFS), the IILMC aims to enhance cross-border investment flows, international linkages and financial stability,” the corporation discloses on its website.

The leadership of CAN, however wondered when Nigeria became a member of this Islamic body, stressing that the government’s action was a violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria especially Section 10.

Section 10 states that “The Government of the Federation or a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion”

According to CAN, the action by the government of Nigeria on accepting to head IILM amounted to denouncing Nigeria as secular, insisting that Nigeria therefore cannot join any organization that has a religious connotation.

Against this background, CAN said Nigerians should focus on some pertinent questions with intent to make the government offer right answers. The questions are as follow:

*What is Nigeria doing in Islamic and Shariah compliant organization?

*Who authorized the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to join this organization?

*What provision of our constitution supports our membership of a religious association as a secular state?

*If the argument is that we are a multi-religious state, does having many religions in a state define that state as multi-religious state? Will that not contradict section 10 of the 1999 constitution at the same time?

*When did the National Assembly pass the law to do away with our secular status?

*When did our Constitution change to allow this alliance that seems to portray Nigeria as Islamic? Is the National Assembly aware of all the treaties regarding these Islamic organizations to which Nigeria is now a member*?

CAN statement read, “We also recalled how President Muhammadu Buhari not only smuggled Nigeria into the “34-state Islamic military alliance against terrorism” but he and his government poured invectives and venoms on those who spoke against his unconstitutional action.

*Do we need to repeat our concern that almost all the heads of security paramilitary agencies in Nigeria today are Muslims as if Christians have become second class citizens or rather lack competent officers to in charge! Has Nigeria become an Islamic state?

*We also recall the controversy surrounding the funding of Jaiz bank, an Islamic institution, with the public money by the immediate past CBN Governor with impunity.

*Recently, when the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu overhauled the heads of the 17 parastatals and agencies under his watch, 13 out of 17 of them were and are Muslims! Is this government saying it is only Muslims that can be trusted?

*A government that is interested in the unity and peace of the country should not be taking actions such as the lopsidedness of its appointments at the expense of one religion with impunity.

*We have noted with dismay that this government is not a listening government and this is dangerous for the future wellbeing of our nation. Is it democracy we are practicing or a rigid dictatorship?

*Equally, we are surprised by the argument being canvassed in some quarters that

Nigeria is not a secular but a multi-religious nation. Assuming but not conceding that Nigeria is a multi-religious state, should the government policies be pro one of the religions at the expense of the others?

*Many of our Christian brothers and sisters are being killed like rams in hundreds by the Fulani herdsmen while our security agencies look elsewhere all because none of their heads is a Christian.

*This is not the Nigeria dreamt of by our founding Fathers and it is high time the government woke up to its constitutional responsibilities.

*Christians have equal rights with our Muslim counterparts since the 1999 Constitution recognizes the multiplicity of religions and we will no longer pretend as if all is well with Nigeria.

*Let it be stressed here that we love our Muslim brothers and sisters in this nation and we are aware that we cannot do without one another.

“However, we need to drum it loud to the ears of this present administration to always consider our plural state in terms of ethnicity and religion and ensure balance not only on the issue of appointments but on other issues which would continue to portray the government as being partisan towards one particular religion.” [myad]

I Don’t Believe In Pastors, Bible, They Are Fake – Kemi Olunloyo

olunloyo-kemi

A popular US-based Nigerian born controversial journalist and social media enthusiast, Kemi Olunloyo, has said that she doesn’t believe in Bible and Pastors, saying that they are fake.

The fearless writer, who recently revealed that she would marry in 2017 said that she would never respect pastors and the Bible, saying that they were all fakes.

In a Christmas message to her teeming fans, Miss Olunloyo said that even God never endorsed the Bible.

Her post reads in full:

“Many of u fans all over social are asking me how I knew about Jesus and God if not the bible. Stupid dumbass question. The answer is FROM MY UGLY SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER who told us stories. I don’t believe or read the Bible. I will never touch it again. It is full of fake stories.

God NEVER ENDORSED the Bible! He asked us to worship him directly not thru a book or pastor. If more people were spiritual like me rather than being religious, this will be a better world.

I became a born again spiritual being Sunday December 25th 2011 and now this Sunday December 25th 2016 #Kesus is back. Remember Kesus, my spiritual name. I don’t do church, don’t respect pastors or read the Bible. So many versions of it too.

That King James (Lebron) version is the FAKEST! The real King in the biblical days was not even A CHRISTIAN and his royal biblicalness had no business writing a BIBLE. Christianity has nothing to do with Christmas! Jesus was not even born December 25th either.

Lies everywhere. 400 ppl got blocked off my verified Facebook page’s 77,000 and I’m ready to block another 400 who insult me.

There is an Igbo guy in my inbox now who says he wants to marry me and get rid of my bachelorette reality show, good looking and all and I must “give my life to Jesus” begging me.

He says if I do he will give me $100K aka N48M. He’s a company CEO. You can’t even “buy” me with these Jesus freak lines. I already love Jesus and God and that’s why my Christmas name is#KESUS.

Absolutely no bibles, pastors or church. Religion is the biggest lie to mankind. I see ppl heading to #Mecca to stone the devil. The devil is already in ur home, office, everywhere and many DIE in stampedes there! I’m not religious, I’m spiritual.

STAY SPIRITUAL! I LOVE YOU ALL!!#MerryChristmas‎. [myad]

London Court Frees Ibori, Places him Under House Arrest

James Ibori

A London court which yesterday ordered the release of the former Governor of Delta State in Nigeria, Chief James Onanefe Ibori from prison, is reported to have also placed him under house arrest in London.

Ibori was released from prison, where he spent six years following his conviction for stealing and laundering Nigeria’s money. He was initially jailed for 13 years but was due for release on Tuesday, December 20, after serving full six years.

Reports reaching us indicate that the London court had ordered that his movement should be restricted to his St. John’s Wood residence. He was also ordered to be reporting to the London Metropolitan Police every week.

The Nigerian politician is due back in court next month for deportation hearing.

Ibori, who was once London store cashier, was jailed for fraud totalling nearly £50 million in April 2012.

He evaded capture in Nigeria after a mob of supporters attacked police but was arrested in Dubai in 2010 and extradited to the UK, where he was prosecuted based on evidence from the Metropolitan Police. [myad]

Malabu Oil Deal: I Will Defend Myself At Appropriate Time – Bello Adoke

Bello Adoke

My attention has been drawn to the charges filed by the EFCC against me and other named individuals and companies in respect of OPL 245 Settlement Agreement involving Malabu Oil & Gas Limited and Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited. The charge of aiding the commission of money laundering offences preferred against me has finally confirmed the orchestrated plans to bring me to public disrepute in order to satisfy the whims and caprices of some powerful interests on revenge mission.
I wish to reiterate that I acted within the actual and ostensible authority of the Office I occupied to broker a settlement between Malabu Oil & Gas Limited and Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited in order to ward off the over US$2 Billion Dollars liability in damages for breach of contract which the country would have been exposed to in the likely event of the success of Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited’s claim before the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
The Terms of Settlement ensured that the interests of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Malabu Oil & Gas Limited and Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited were duly acknowledged and provided for in the Settlement Agreement. The Federal Government of Nigeria was entitled to the Signature bonus which was duly paid; Malabu Oil & Gas Limited surrendered its title to OPL 245 for a consideration and Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited was re-allocated OPL 245 which its had previously substantially de-risked in consideration for withdrawing their over US$ 2 Billion Dollars claim for breach of contract against the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Since the Parties aforementioned, faithfully discharged their respective obligations under the Settlement Agreement, one cannot comprehend how the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation which brokered the Settlement was expected to renege from the agreement by denying Malabu Oil & Gas Limited the benefits associated with the relinquishing of their title to OPL 245 already warehoused in a joint FGN/Shell Escrow account, or to prevent the subsequent re-allocation of the relinquished OPL 245 to Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited when the company had already furnished consideration for it
to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
I am of the respectful view that it should be clear to any person dispassionately reviewing the transaction to confirm that I had no personal interest in the transaction; I did not take any benefit from it, I had requisite approvals from the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to broker the settlement and execute the OPL 245 Settlement Agreement. I am therefore unable to rationalize the charge of aiding the commission of money laundering offences preferred against me by the EFCC. But be that as it may, I hope to at the appropriate time make myself available to defend the charge for whatever it is worth.

The World Is Not Celebrating Me Because I’m Woman, Serena Complains

Serena Williams

Former World table tennis champion, Serena Williams, has complained that she is not being celebrated as being the “greatest tennis player of all time” because she is a woman.
The American lady said that the scenario would have been completely different had she been a man.
“I think if I were a man, I would have been in that conversation a long time ago. I think being a woman is just a whole new set of problems from the society that you have to deal with, as well as being black, so it’s a lot to deal with – and especially lately,” Serena said in an interview for ESPN vertical, “The Undefeated.
“I’ve been able to speak up for women’s rights because I think that gets lost in colour, or gets lost in cultures. Women make up so much of this world, and, yeah, if I were a man, I would have 100% been considered the greatest ever a long time ago,” she added.
The 35-year-old has notched up a total of 22 career Grand Slam titles so far, equaling German Steffi Graf’s record for most titles in the Open Era. [myad]

Jammeh Accuses ECOWAS Of Dabbling Into Gambian Internal Problems, Insists He’ll Not Step Down

jammeh-president-ofthe-gambia

Embattled Gambia President, Yahya Jammeh, has condemned the West Africa economic bloc, the Economic Community Of West Africa (ECOWAS), for dabbling into the internal problem of his country by asking him to step down following his election defeat.

Speaking at a meeting with members of the African Bar Association (ABA) that was televised in Gambia, President Jammeh said that the position taken by the regional body had violated its own principle of “non-interference in the affairs of a sovereign state.”

“They told me to send a representative only for the representative to be told that… Jammeh must hand over and that on the 19 of January all ECOWAS heads of states will be in the Gambian capital, Banjul to see the inauguration of the president elect,” he said.

“This is violating one rule that says non-interference in the internal affairs of countries…,” he added.

He spoke about the court case where he has challenged the election result.

“Knowing that we have a strong case, they said we should not go to the court and irrespective of the court decision if you proceed – they know that I am going to proceed – they will enforce the December election results.

“Let them enforce it today and see. What are they waiting for? I will not be intimidated by any power in this world.”

Gambia was plunged into a crisis on December 9 after Jammeh rejected the results, a week after conceding defeat to a little known property developer, Adama Barrow.

The term of the long-standing ruler is set to expire on Jan. 19.

Leaders of the ECOWAS had called on Jammeh to step down during its meeting in Nigeria on Dec. 17. They also vowed “to take all necessary action to enforce the [election] results”, without spelling out what those measures might be.

Jammeh, who continues to cling to power, has ruled Gambia with an iron fist for 22 years. Gambians got only “a week of democracy” between the president first declaring he accepts the election result and when he claimed there have been irregularities in the process.

On Dec. 2, Jammeh surprised everyone when he extended a helping hand to his successor on national television. With smiles and jokes, a style uncharacteristic of Gambia’s tough-talking military ruler, he had telephoned Barrow to express his readiness to offer any advice that might be needed.

However, a week later on Friday, Jammeh announced in a nationally-televised address that he was rejecting the outcome of the election in its “totality”, citing irregularities in the process, creating a new political crisis in the country.

Jammeh said he initially accepted the results because he thought it was the “verdict of the Gambian people” before he discovered that “unacceptable irregularities” had taken place, including the alleged disenfranchisement of voters in some cases.

He called for a fresh election that would be supervised by a “completely independent electoral commission and make sure that every Gambian votes.”

He said the ECOWAS delegation had met him and the opposition, and then came back to him to say that the result reflected the will of the Gambian people.

“I said: ‘how the hell do you mean by this is the will of the Gambian people when 360,000 voters have not voted, 40 percent of the registered voters didn’t vote, for the first time’,” he said.

“I made it very clear that I will not accept it and that is where I stand up to today… All I want is to go back to the Gambian people and this is where I stand today, tomorrow and a day after tomorrow for a billion years.”

According to the current “contentious” results of the country’s electoral authorities, Jammeh got 208,487 votes, while Adama Barrow received 227,708 votes and Mamma Kandeh 89,768 votes.

The total voter registration was 886,578 votes which means that 360,615 (or about 41 percent voters) did not vote, a point that Jammeh raised concern about though it was the same percentage of people who did not vote in the 2006 elections as well.
