Daughter of late Adamu Atta, form civilian governor of old Kwara State, Nigerian, in the person of Ms. Saratu Atta, has been appointed by the new President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo as Personal Assistant.
President Nana Akufo Addo announced the appointment of Saratu Atta, who was one time wife of the former Nigeria Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, two days ago.
Saratu Atta, who was born 53 years ago, is a graduate of the University of Warwick, UK, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics and International Studies after which she worked as a Securities Trader at First Securities Discount House in Lagos, Nigeria from 1993 to1997.
Saratu Atta established her own security printing company in Lagos before she was appointed as Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) Campaign Secretary in 2008. She has been Office Manager and Executive Assistant to Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo Addo who contested the presidential election on NPP’s ticket since 2009.
The new Personal Assistant to Ghana’s President married Fani-Kayode in 1987 and bore him a female and her only child named Folake in the same year. They parted ways around 1989 when Mr. Fani-Kayode found a new wife, Yemisi Wada.
Saratu Atta’s older Sister, Remi was also said to have once married to Nana Akufo-Addo.
The Ghanaian president and Remi were married for 10 years and spent most of their time together in Paris before returning to Accra where they later divorced after two children together. [myad]
Cuba was for all intents and purposes a whore of the United States of America. Located just 90 miles from the coast of Florida, it was an ideal post for American hard drug barons, sexual perverts, gamblers and a cocktail of all manner of criminal gangs. So brazen was the domination, the exploitation and the humiliation of Cuba that in 1946 the American organized crime staged what they called the ‘Havana Conference’ there. This was a sad turn of events because since the 18th century, Cubans fought hard and bravely against Spanish colonial domination. When independence was finally achieved in 1902, America took over and lined up a succession of experienced fools – committed to their dark motives – to rule Cuba as Presidents. Then Fidel Castro, the greatest revolutionary leader in the world came. He rode into Havana on the1st January 1959 with his friend and collaborator Che Guavera at the head of their revolutionary army to change the destiny of Cuba. The puppet President, the army sergeant who pretended to be a general, the corrupt and tyrannical Fulgencio Batista who plundered Cuba with American support took to his heels to meet his puppet masters in the US. Within days of Castro’s assumption of power, Earl T Smith resigned as US Ambassador to Cuba. He later confessed during a testimony to the US Senate in 1960 that “until Castro, the U.S. was so overwhelmingly influential in Cuba that the American ambassador was the second most important man, sometimes even more important than the Cuban president.” Castro did not hide his ideas of what to do with power in Cuba. In “History Will Absolve Me”, a four-hour speech he made on 16 October 1953 in his own defense in court against the charges brought against him after he led an attack on the Monacada Barracks, he put everything in black and white. Still, his trenchant and frequent denunciation of the US when he came to power, his agrarian reforms and the nationalization of industries owned by US citizens was something of a surprise and increasing concern in Washington. He often openly defied the US and seemingly got away with it. President Dwight D Eisenhower of the US officially recognized the new Cuban government in 1959 immediately Castro came to power. Castro responded and in April 1959 led a delegation of representatives to the U.S. as guests of the Press Club. Ironically while his performance during the visit charmed the American people, their government was not amused by his reform program which he outlined to Vice President Richard Nixon. Castro on return to Havana intensified state intervention and take-over of privately owned businesses in Cuba; America increased trade restrictions. It was a game of tit for tat. Each time the Cuban government nationalized American citizens properties, the American government took countermeasures, resulting in the prohibition of all exports to Cuba on 19 October 1960. Later that year, U.S. diplomats Edwin L. Sweet and William G. Friedman were arrested and expelled from the island having been charged with “encouraging terrorist acts, granting asylum, financing subversive publications and smuggling weapons.” From the economic to the diplomatic front, relations between the two countries were taking a dangerous dive. On 3 January 1961 the U.S. withdrew diplomatic recognition of the Cuban government and closed the embassy in Havana. Cuba on the other hand consolidated trade and diplomatic relations with the USSR. Military tensions followed. In March 1960 the freighter La Coubre exploded in Cuba and Castro held the US responsible for the terror attack. In 1961 the CIA trained, shipped and landed 1,500 Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs with the sole aim of assassinating Fidel Castro and overthrowing his government. But Castro mobilized his people to resist and defeat the invaders. This humiliation did not deter the US from embarking on more desperate moves against Castro and Cuba. From the ‘Cuban Project’ through ‘Operation Mongoose’ to ‘Operation Northwoods’ and ‘Operation Ortsac’, several anti Castro plans were formulated. A coordinated program of political, psychological, and military sabotage, involving intelligence operations as well as assassination attempts on key political leaders became the guiding principle of US policy to Cuba. There were also to be attacks on mainland U.S. targets, hijackings and assaults on Cuban refugee boats to generate U.S. public support for military action against the Cuban government. An opportunity to heighten tensions between the two nations came when the US placed nuclear warheads in Turkey, targeted at the USSR. Castro in turn invited the USSR to install its own nuclear war heads in Cuba targeting Washington. This led to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Even though the missiles were later removed, the US tightened her economic blockade on Cuba which has not been relaxed up till date. Similarly, the US never gave up on its plans to assassinate Fidel Castro. Officially, over 600 attempts were made by the US government on his life before he died of natural causes on November 25 2016. Against all these odds, Fidel Castro was able to improve the lot of the Cuban poor. In 1953, the poor in Cuba who were 40% of the population shared only 6.5% of the National income. In 1996, they had a share of 26%. Equally impressive is the Cuban educational system after the revolution which has been made free at all levels. This has raised literacy level to 98.1%, the highest in the world. In the mid90s Cuba had 530,000 university graduates, (5% of the population out of which 5000 were doctorates. [myad]

Some aggrieved leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have formed what has been called a mega party, known as Action Democratic Party (ADP). The politicians are yet to make their identities public.
The party, which is believed to be seeking the registration of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a political party, is said to be coming with the aim of unseating the Muhammadu Buhari government in the 2019 general elections
According to a document released by the political association, the National chairmanship position has been zoned to the North Central; South West, Deputy National Chairman; South East, National Secretary and National Legal Adviser; North-West, National Organising; and South South, National Treasurer.
Similarly, the ADP has made provisions for two zones to produce the deputy national chairmen as it was during the early days of the PDP, just as it created a new office, National Diaspora Adviser, which has never existed in PDP and APC.
According to the breakdown, North Central will produce National Welfare Secretary, National Vice Chairman, Vice National Organizing Secretary, Deputy National Woman Leader, Assistant National Secretary, Deputy National Treasurer; National Vice woman leader, National Vice Youth Leader and Ex-Official (2 males, 1 female).
The North-West, aside the position of National Organising Secretary, will produce: National Woman leader, National Vice Chairman, Vice Publicity Secretary, Deputy National Secretary, Deputy National Youth Leader, Deputy National Welfare Secretary, National Vice Woman Leader and Ex-Officio (2 males,1 female). Liberian-born actress, Evelyn Louis, has described Nigerian men as “awesome, wonderful” and that “they are like any other man created by God.”
Evelyn, who came to Nigeria in 2014 to pursue her acting career in acting, said that she is not thinking of returning to her country any time soon, saying that she is ready to spend the rest of her life in the country.
She stressed that her dream is to make Nigeria her second home even as she desperately searches for love.
“I will definitely go back to my country someday, even if I’m not going to base there. I will be in and out of the country and make Nigeria my second home.”
On marrying a Nigerian man, the rising actress declared: “it’s not about me, it’s what God wants for me. If God gives me a Nigerian man in marriage, I will marry him. And I will definitely be glad to spend the rest of my life in Nigeria.”
She recalled that people in her country have a very negative impression about Nigeria, adding that they see Nigeria as a home of rituals and witchcrafts.
“Before I came to Nigeria, we used to have a very negative impression about the country. I heard things like: that country is full of rituals and witchcrafts. But as a passion driven person, I didn’t mind what they said to me. Here, I am today. When I arrived in the country, I discovered one needs to be self-disciplined to be able to achieve his or her goal in Nigeria” While in Nigeria since 2014, she attended PETIT Film Institute, Ajao Estate, Lagos, where she did a professional course in acting before proceeding to another film school at Festac.
She graduated recently from the film school, and already, she has featured in a couple of films, including “American Gift,” Marketing Babes” and others.
According to her, the passion she has for acting informed her decision to relocate to the country. “Before I came to Nigeria, I was a producer in my country. I have this passion for acting right from childhood. And I said to myself since I have passion for acting, I should work on it academically. That was why I came to Nigeria,” Evelyn said. [myad]
President Muhammadu Buhari and His Wife, Ayisha Buhari
The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has made it clear that she respects her husband’s position on the separation of public office from the private lives of the occupants of such offices, and that she would not violate such position.
Reacting to media reports, alleging that she bled the Nigerian High Commission in London financially during her visit to that country, Aisha complained bitterly that she did not abuse any privilege of the High Commission.
A statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Adebisi Olumide Ajayi in Abuja said: “the attention of the Wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari, has been drawn to a report in Sahara Reporters where, she was amongst other things accused of abuse of privileges at Nigerian High Commission in London.
“It is not in her interest to join issues with anyone or defend others mentioned in the report. It is however paramount to put the record in proper perspectives as it concern her trips to United Kingdom vis-à-vis the Nigerian High Commission in London.
“Aisha Buhari has never traveled to London with a large entourage as was carried in the report. The highest number of people on a trip involves her three kids, ADC, and her personal physician.
“The Nigerian Commission in London has never offered any favour either monetarily or materially to her or her so called entourage on any of her trips to London.”
She explained that the State House Abuja caters for her meal when necessary and that other healthy food and variety needed by her children are her personal responsibility.
She added: “It is on record that the Nigerian Commission in London does not receive Aisha Buhari at the airport with any official distinction or privileges as was accorded other first ladies before her
“Her drivers are privately arranged without any recourse to the embassy for staff.
“She has never complained or raised dust about any of these acts by the High Commission because of the understanding, as clearly spelt out and practiced by her husband, that public office must be separated from the private lives of the occupants.” [myad]
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir David Lawal has made it clear that President Muhammadu Buhari did not remove him as chairman of the presidential committee on the reconstitution of all the federal government boards as was published in some media outfits.
Speaking through Mr. Bolaji Adebiyi, a Director of Press in his office, Babachir said that it was natural for the President to act on the report of the committee which he chaired. Saying his committee successfully completed its assignment and duly submitted its report appropriately.
“If the committee satisfactorily completed its assignment as given by Mr. President and submitted its report, the same committee cannot still be the one implementing the report unless authorized by Mr. President to do so.
“And if Mr. President is taking actions on the report of the committee by a higher authority this cannot be taken as an indictment of the SGF or members of the committee that produced the report, or that he was replaced.
“There are many factors in the work of the committee, like others that may be asked to carry out a mandate. Mr. President may still have other inputs based on being contacted by persons or groups.
“After the submission of the committee report, it is the prerogative of Mr. President and not that of the SGF’s committee to decide what to do with the report”, he added.
President Buhari had on July 16th last year, dissolved the Governing Boards of many of the Federal Institutions and inaugurated an eight-man committee headed by Babachir on October 26 on the reconstitution of all the boards.
Other members of the committee are Alhaji Mai Mala Buni (North-East), Alhaji Zakari Idde (North-Central), Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir (North-West), Chief Hillard Etagbo Eta (South-South), Chief Pius Akinyelure (South-West), Chief Emmanuel Eneukwu (South-East) as members while Mr. Gideon Sammani is the Secretary. In the North, they are taught the rudiments of the art of politics at a very tender age. Sometimes, they are taught politics in the places of worship.
As I have noticed, Islam has a bit of politics intertwined in its teachings. The average Northerner has a transistor radio that is tuned to BBC Hausa.
Politics is taught in the local language, Hausa. The North understands that in politics, you sometimes compromise or dialogue when you meet a stronger opposition. And when you meet a feeble opposition, you crush them ruthlessly.
In Politics, forgive me to say, there are no sentiments. An example is President Muhammadu Buhari who, as Head of State in 1983 and President in 2015 has systematically crushed his opposition, thereby paving a smooth road to victory in 2019.
Muhammadu Buhari knows what Power is, and knows how to use it. A typical Northerner knows that you can cross carpet to achieve your political desire. What matters to the Northerner is the dividends of Power, not the schemes you use to attain power. Hence, the North can, through PDP obtain power, and destroy the same PDP if it (The North as a Political bloc) feels cheated out of the power arrangement like in the case of Goodluck Jonathan and the infamous ‘one term agenda’ that led to the departure of PDP Governors to form what we now know as APC.
The North will not obtain power and let that power predominantly favour the South, a case study is the 95% vs 5% analogy of President Muhammadu Buhari. The key word in Politics is; Interests ! Interests !! Interests !!!
When the North is in power, whatever the South wants will have to be bargained for, not given on a platter of gold. To garner political power, the politician is allowed the use of propaganda, subtle blackmail, arm twisting, even insults to unsettle and defeat his opposition. That is Politics. Forgive me if I sound Machiavellian but the Bible also says that the Kingdom of God suffereth violence and the Violent take it, by force. If the Kingdom suffereth Violence, you can imagine what manner of violence the kingdom of man faces.
Now, the average Nigerian Southerner is overtly sentimental when Politics is the issue. The Southerner wants an Angel to Govern him, The Southerner wants the Perfect Political Party. Hence the South can just label a Party as evil, useless etc. Forgetting that a Political Party in Nigeria is just a vehicle to garner Political power. Nothing more, Nothing less. If a Southern Politician cross-carpets from, say PDP to APC, his kinsmen will be up in arms against him; ”Why did you join our enemy,” ”Don’t you know APC is a Northern Party?”, this will be the slogan of the day. If a Southerner is by an act of God voted into power as President of the Federal Republic, his core issue will be; how to placate the North. He will build the best roads for the North, Give the North the best Schools, Healthcare, anything just to placate the North at the detriment of the South. A case study is the Olusegun Obasanjo administration and that of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The people of Ogun State will tell you that they did not gain anything from the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, even jokingly say ”The road to Obasanjo’s house is not tarred”. In Goodluck Jonathan’s case, his village in Otueke, Bayelsa State was flooded during his time as President, I do not know of any Federal Government project that was situated in Bayelsa. Goodluck Jonathan, he didn’t know what to do with power.
You can imagine a President of Nigeria saying ”If I use 40% of my Presidential Powers, they will call me a dictator”. The Northern President cares not if you call him a dictator or a power drunk individual. After all, a Leader must be seen to lead and lead well. An educated southerner will open his buccal cavity and tell you “I am not interested in Politics,” ”Politics is evil,” ”Politicians are demons” and all other sorts inanities. That is the level political illiteracy that abounds in the South of Nigeria.
A Southerner will forget that everything around him, his food and its prices, Education, place of habitation, Security and sometimes, Faith or rather Religion is affected by the windmills of Politics. I think it’s high time, the South begins to understand the art of Politics and the art of winning power.
I also believe that until the South knows what to do with power when it is obtained, we will continue go round in circles in this quagmire of Political decadence.
A car bomb, allegedly set off by a militant offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), denoted outside an Izmir courthouse, killing at least two. The terror attack is just one more in a string of attacks demonstrating the collapse of Turkey’s counterterrorism capacity in the wake of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s political purges.
Erdogan loves a crisis. He called the abortive July 15 coup “a gift from God.” He has since ushered in and extended emergency laws and purged tens of thousands of political enemies.
He is also allergic to criticism. Journalists either blame Erdogan’s enemy du jour or end up in prison. Since the terror campaign began, Erdogan has arrested more journalists than terrorists.
For months, there has been a looming showdown between Erdogan and Turkey’s military. Dogu Perincek, a Maoist-turned-ultranationalist, has a powerbase among senior officers. Erdogan has apparently tried to erode Perincek’s influence by returning purged Islamists to power all the while building his own personal militia under the guise of SADAT, a private security company training paramilitaries whose head, Gen. Adnan Tanriverdi, Erdogan appointed as his military counsel.
Erdogan has worked with Perincek to purge their mutual enemies: liberals, Kurds, and followers of Fethullah Gülen. Where the two have clashed most prominently is over the new constitution which Erdogan wants to confirm his dictatorial powers.
The question is whether the two might temporarily bury the hatchet by striking a deal to turn Turkey more permanently toward Russia. Perincek has long denigrated NATO and urged closer ties between Ankara and Moscow. Erdogan’s recent embrace of Russia (“Close incirik” is trending right now on Turkish twitter and prominent Turkish papers blame the United States for recent attacks) play into Russia’s hands.
If Erdogan continues his battle against Perincek, Turkey is heading for another coup, political assassinations, or civil war. If he calls a truce with Perincek, then there is no impediment for Erdogan to declare martial law and to bring the full force of the military to bear against anyone who would stand in Erdogan’s way. Martial law, however, is no magic bullet:
Erdogan is like Putin. Both leaders may believe they can use the other and out maneuver the other. But Putin is smarter than Erdogan. The Turkish leader should ask: Does he really think he can outmaneuver Putin? Could Putin use Perincek against Erdogan by either supporting a coup or assassinating the Turkish leader or his close aides?
Perincek has declared his opposition to the new constitution. Would he cooperate with martial law even if it meant Erdogan continued to push the new pact through parliament?
Erdogan retains the support of half the country, many of whom is conservative Muslims and embrace political Islam. Having incited religious hatred and intolerance for more than a decade, Erdogan will not likely be able to rein in those constituents even if their demands become politically inexpedient.
Martial law and a turn toward Russia and China will not revive Turkey’s economy; they will only cause it to sink further.
Erdogan has pulled the trigger on the Kurds. He has not only walked away from peace talks, but also arrested democratically elected Kurdish leaders. Many Kurdish cities today resemble Aleppo; only the crackdown on media both foreign and domestic has tempered outrage. Martial law will not resolve that problem. It will only transform Turkey’s psychological partition into physical division.
Russia is not known for bringing either freedom or prosperity to its clients—and that is exactly how Putin views allies.
So what can Turkey do to recover? Emergency laws are addictive, but they will no more bring stability to Turkey than they did to Syria. Nor is press censorship wise. Avoiding accountability seldom improves quality of governance. Military force will exacerbate rather than resolve societal polarization. The United States can do without Turkey, and NATO let alone the European Union would be better off without the Turkey shaped by Erdogan. If Erdogan wants to dance with Putin, Turks will suffer. Russia is not known for bringing either freedom or prosperity to its clients—and that is exactly how Putin views allies.
Martial law will push Turkey further into the morass. Simply put, there is no substitute for rule-of-law and democracy, the very ideals to which Erdogan has now turned his back. [myad]
