Akeredola Electoral Victory: Governor Miniko, PDP Sing Different Tunes

Ondo state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
Ondo state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko

While the outgoing Ondo state Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sent a congratulatory message to Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who was elected in the Saturday election as the next governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP has rejected the result of the election.
This was even as a chieftain of the APC in Ogun State, Chief Tolu Odebiyi, has also congratulated Akeredolu on his emergence as the Governor-Elect of Ondo State.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Eni Akinsola, Governor Mimiko said: “It behoves on me as Governor of Ondo State to congratulate the Governor-elect, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and wish him success in the challenging task of governing our dear state.
“It is incumbent upon me as Governor to facilitate smooth transition between my government and the incoming one. I will, to this end, provide the ambience for a smooth and seamless transition process.”
While promising to continue to provide leadership to the state until the takeover date, Mimiko expressed appreciation to the people of the state.
“I use this medium to express my sincere appreciation to all our citizens for the very peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the election period.
“I will not waiver in providing needed leadership to our dear state till the last day of my term.”
Mimiko called on the residents to strive to sustain the peace enjoyed in the state for the past seven years and promised to speak with the people as occasion demands “as my eight-year tenure inches to an end.”

But in a statement by the spokesperson of the PDP, Dayo Adeyeye, the party said that it has rejected the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State, and described the outcome of the election as a “charade and not the true reflection of the will of the people of Ondo State.”
The PDP accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of having aided the APC to rig the election.
It alleged that INEC has now “graduated from inconclusive Elections as seen in Kogi, Bayelsa, Osun, FCT, Imo, Nasarawa and some other previous by-elections in the Country to ‘Advanced Election Rigging’, as in the case of Edo and Ondo States Gubernatorial Elections.
“It is common knowledge that the APC Agents openly bought votes of the electorates in the full glare of security operatives who did nothing to prevent such dastardly violation of the Electoral Law.
“It is not surprising that the electorates in Ondo state became so vulnerable to the corruptive influence of the APC because of the hash economic situation in the Country inflicted on Nigerians by the APC Administration which has indeed made all Nigerians virtually beggars in their own Country.”
Adeyeye said that PDP had persistently called for the postponement of the election before Saturday, for at least two weeks to enable the Party campaign and prepare properly for the election.
He said that the party’s request followed the setback orchestrated by “Justice Okon Abang and the charlatans in PDP who allowed themselves to be used by the APC to destroy our chances in the Ondo state election.
“The actions of INEC in collaboration with the APC led Administration left us no time to campaign and sell our Candidate and Party Manifesto to the electorates in Ondo State.
“Our persistent call for the postponement of the Election which was backed and supported by more than 20 other political parties were all rejected by INEC which were acting the script of the APC.
“It was a carefully planned and well-orchestrated strategy to rig the Election well in advance by preventing the PDP from planning and campaigning for the Election. The APC has hereby introduced a new formula of rigging Election in Nigeria.
“In view of the fact that the Election was blatantly manipulated from the beginning to the end to favour the APC, we vehemently reject the results of the November 26, 2016 Gubernatorial Election in Ondo State.”
The PDP scribe said that the Saturday’s election and all actions leading to it fell short of laid down principles guiding conduct of elections in Nigeria.
“We have instructed our Candidate and the Ondo State Chapter of our Party to proceed to the Tribunal to challenge the Outcome of the Election. We call on the Judiciary to redeem Nigeria’s image on this matter as we request for the total Cancellation of the Election in Ondo State.”
This was even as Chief Tolu Odebiyi, in a statement by his Media Office, said that Akeredolu’s emergence is a reflection of the abiding faith of Nigerians in the APC as the party capable of rescuing the country from the rot into which the Peoples Democratic Party has thrown it.
Odebiyi said that it was also a show of belief in the capacity of Akeredolu to take Ondo State to the Promised Land after several years in the hands of the opposition.
“This is a plus also for the leadership shown by President Muhammadu Buhari in piloting the affairs of the country.
“It indeed is a reflection of the belief of Nigerians in the capacity of the President and the APC to take the country out of the doldrums despite the attempts by the opposition to rubbish the good works being done to redeem the country.”
Odebiyi praised the leadership of the APC at the national level, adding: “it is equally pertinent to congratulate the governors elected on the platform of the APC in the South West, especially the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, because their dedication to service and delivery of democratic dividends as seen by the people must have spurred the need for change as demanded for by the people of Ondo State with the election of Chief Akeredolu.” [myad]

Buhari Calls For Stronger Commitment To Peace Process In Southern Sudan

south-sudan-and-buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for stronger commitment to the implementation of the peace process in South Sudan, regretting that delay in implementing the peace accord has affected the development of the country in spite of the lofty potentials for growth.

Buhari, who received the Letter of Credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan, Mr. Paul Malong Akaro, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, said: “I was a little disappointed with the subsequent developments in your country. I was hoping that we can move forward and develop the great potentials of your country after the peace accord.

“The African Union will continue to hold your leaders to account in implementing the peace process. And the leaders should be able to accommodate one another for the good of your people.”

President Buhari said that the peace process would be most effective when accepted and implemented by leaders from within the country, without external interventions.

He however, assured the Ambassador that Nigeria will remain steadfast in following up to ensure that the country regains stability.

This was even as Ambassador Akaro said that the government of national unity in South Sudan is still committed to the peace process in the country, adding: “we know that the only way we can achieve stability and development is to implement the peace process. We are grateful for your support.”

President Buhari also received the Letter of Credence of the Ambassador of Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mr. Malainine Sadik-Bachir, where he gave assurance that Nigeria will continue to support the country as it strives to realize its goals of development.

“You can be assured that Nigeria will remain steadfast in her support for Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. We will continue to do our best for you.”  [myad]

Asiwaju Tinubu

The National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rotimi Akeredolu, the winner of the governorship election in Ondo State, even as he asked party members to close ranks “for the good of our party and its progressive ideals.”

Tinubu who had, before yesterday’s election, opposed to Akeredolu’s emergence as candidate of the APC and who abstained from the party’s candidate campaign launch in Akure last week, today, Sunday, shortly after Akeredolu was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), commended Ondo people for their exemplary conduct during the election.

He particularly commended the Ondo people for demonstrating their will to shun the regressive politics of yesterday by returning to the progressive brand of politics that has been the trademark of the people of that state.

“I congratulate all party members in the state, particularly the party leadership in the Southwest. I must express profound congratulations to President Muhammadu Buhari, the national leader of the party, whose stature and dignity helped guide the APC to another victory that should advance the progressive aims of the party and the people.

“To all the people and parties in Ondo, your election has been had and held. Now is the time that all must work for the continued development, prosperity and peace of your state and our beloved country.

“I appeal to all party members including those who have been disaffected from the primary until today to come together for the good of our party and its progressive ideals.

22 Foods That Should Be Avoided To Prevent High Blood Pressure

lard-cream

High Blood Pressure, described by some medical experts as “the silent killer,” can lead to serious health risks and even death. While doctor may be the first one to spot it, it’s up to the sufferer to stay on top of keeping his blood pressure where it needs to be. Individual is his own best wellness advocate, and so knowing what’s helping, and harming his overall health is key. If his doctor has determined that he has high blood pressure, here are 22 foods he should limit, or avoid.

Sodium and salt

If you have high blood pressure, you need to be particularly mindful of how much sodium you consume on a daily basis. Why? It has been established that water is pulled into the blood vessels when you have excess sodium in your system, increasing the amount of blood and, ultimately, causing your blood pressure to increase. The same story adds about 77% of sodium consumed comes from packaged, prepared, and restaurant food.

What’s even more frightening is another 12% comes from foods that naturally contain sodium, which still doesn’t account for your salt shaker. To help people limit their salt intake, a list of foods that add the most sodium to our diets has been identified, so you definitely want to limit them.

  1. Breads and rolls: One piece can contain 230 milligrams.
  2. Cold cuts and cured meats: Pre-packaged turkey can contain 1,050 milligrams of sodium per serving.
  3. Pizza: One slice can contain 760 milligrams.
  4. Poultry: Three ounces of frozen and breaded nuggets can contain 600 milligrams.
  5. Soup: One cup of canned chicken noodle soup can contain 940 milligrams.
  6. Sandwiches: All in, your sandwich can easily surpass 1,500 milligrams.

Saturated fats raise the cholesterol in your blood, which can increase yoru risk of heart disease and stroke. So, it’s important for those with high boold pressure to be aware of how much they’re eating. The AHA recommends getting no more than 6% of your daily calories from saturated fat. This means you’ll want to cut back on these six foods.

  1. Fatty beef
  2. Lamb
  3. Pork
  4. Lard and cream
  5. Butter
  6. Cheese

Sugar has long been known to contribute to obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Interestingly, some researches show sugar can impact a person’s blood pressure directly, independent of weight gain. Consider this one more reason to pass on those office doughnuts. Here are five sweet treats you should limit.

  1. Sugar-sweetened beverages
  2. Candy
  3. Grain-based desserts like cakes, cookies, and pies
  4. Fruit drinks
  5. Dairy desserts and milk products like ice cream and sweetened yogurt

More often than not, trans fat is found in processed foods, which is bad news for people who’ve been following a typical American diet their whole lives. Experts say:“tTrans fats raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lowers your good (HDL) cholesterol levels. Eating trans fats increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. It’s also associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.” Clearly, everyone should limit this unhealthy fat.

Because some processed foods can be sneaky about how they label their trans fat, it’s important to have a discerning eye. Reader’s Digest says you should be wary of these five foods.

  1. Nondairy coffee creamer
  2. Peanut butter
  3. Popcorn
  4. Frozen pizza
  5. Margarine

High blood pressure is certainly nothing to mess around with, which is why a heart-healthy diet is a key factor in maintaining your overall health and well-being. Skip this stuff and go for more nutritious foods instead. [myad]

Election Situation Room Adjudges Ondo Guber Poll Peaceful

clement-nwakwo

The Convener of the Nigeria Civil Society, Situation Room, Clement Nwanko, has described the Ondo State governorship election as generally peaceful and smooth.

In a post election news briefing today, Sunday, in Akure, Ondo state capital, Nwanko commended the professionalism displayed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the voting process at the polling units.
He acknowledged the participation of all political parties in the election despite media reports of
call for postponement by some, and expressed satisfaction with the way all adhered to the peace accord they entered into before the election.
Nwankwo said that observations and reports from the field indicated that there was early distribution and deployment of personnel and materials, which led to commencement of voting at scheduled time of 8am on Saturday.
Security personnel carried out their duties in a civil way even though there were isolated incidents of misconduct by some.
Nwankwo, however, admitted that there were challenges with receiving collated results from local governments that were distant from Akure, the state collation headquarters.
According to him, it created delay in the announcement of results from all of the councils at the same time and advised that further work be done to improve collation time in future election.
“There was still much concern that the general arrangement of some polling units with inadequate floor spaces compromised vote secrecy.”
He said that the situation room observed in Polling Unit 005, Ward 01, Akoko South East and Polling Unit 005 Ward 03 in Idanre councils respectively report of police officer found collecting envelope from party agents.
The situation room also observed that there was poor welfare condition for security personnel deployed for the election and security men complained of lack of support and welfare package.
Nwanko also noticed the issue of vote buying by political parties in the election, saying reports of parties paying voters to induce support had continued and posed a threat to free election in Nigeria.
The situation room is made up of Civil Society Organization working in support of credible and transparent election in Nigeria. [myad]

Buhari Advises Contestants In Ondo Guber Poll To See Akeredolu’s Victory As Wish Of God

Buhari in UAEPresident Muhammadu Buhari has advised all the contestants in the just concluded Ondo state governorship election to see the triumph of Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as the wish of God.
He therefore asked them to work together with the governor-elect to make the state a truly progressive and economically prosperous one for all.
In a congratulatory message issued by the special adviser to Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the President described the victory of Chief Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well-deserved.
The President rejoiced with the people of Ondo State, who aligned with his own belief that Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, with his pedigree, possesses the qualities to transform the state into the Ondo of their dreams.
“From the beginning, this election set out to be a different kind of election. The unity and resilience of the party was tested. I am happy we came out of this victorious.
“This is a huge win. The mood today is against corruption, insecurity and for the restoration of the economy and the creation of jobs. This is where the party stands and I am happy that the electorate has read the situation correctly,” said the President.
Buhari also congratulated the Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, the Chairman of the Campaign Committee, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, and all party faithful who put in their best and braved the odds to ensure a successful outing for the flag bearer.
The President commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Security Agencies and the voters for the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections.
He urged the Governor-elect to put behind whatever acrimonies may have arisen from the electioneering process, and reach out to all well-meaning people in the state and beyond, to implement his vision and bring the much desired CHANGE to the people.
The President assured Nigerians that the APC-led administration under his watch is committed to playing by the rules, and that there will be no let-up “until we see the great nation of our dreams in all spheres of national development.” [myad]

Governor Fayose Accuses INEC Of Rigging Ondo Guber Election

ayodele-fayose-4Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of connived with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its collaborators in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the Ondo State Governorship election.
“Just as I would have loved to congratulate the winner, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), because in every contest, there must be a winner and a loser, the role of INEC in awarding victory to him in the election left much to be desired.”
The governor, who reacted to the outcome of the election in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayina, said that INEC gave the APC victory in the election by deliberately replacing the name of Eyitayo Jegede, the PDP candidate, thereby creating legal logjam that lasted till three days to the election.
He said that the PDP went to the election with its hands tied to the back because of the uncharitable actions of INEC, which has become an arm of the APC.
He said that apart from the APC, political parties in Nigeria are now contesting elections against INEC, saying: “to sustain the ‘see and buy’ strategy and legalize money politics, the APC-led federal government deliberately created poverty in the country so as to continue to enslave the minds of Nigerians with peanuts to get their votes on election day.

Dibo ko sebe (vote and collect money to cook soup) was the slang used by the APC in the Ondo State election and that only worked because the APC federal government have put Nigerians in abject poverty.
“Even though INEC allowed what appeared like a free and fair atmosphere on the election day, the election had been won and lost before it was held.
“For instance, INEC that witnessed the PDP primary election that produced Eyitayo Jegede succumbed to pressure from the APC cabal to replace him with Jimoh Ibrahim, who did not take part in any primary election known to the Electoral Act.
“What could anyone have done under 72 hours in an election that was heavily monetized by the APC?
“The whole process was a deliberate sabotage by INEC, which has totally bastardised the electoral process.
“Obviously, all these shenanigans are geared towards turning Nigeria to a one part state by weakening all opposition parties ahead of the 2019 general elections but I can assure Nigerians that this will not last because the people will always be defeat tyranny.” [myad]

Musical Icon, Yemi Alade Goes Into Partnership With Shell For Bright Energy Ideas

Brian Muriuki , Country Manager Shell Kenya , Yemi Alade, makethefuture Ambassador and Jim Reeves , the technical director from GravityLight during a round table discussion with journalist in Nairobi, Kenya, Monday, Nov 21, 2016 .Shell has teamed up with the GravityLight Foundation, a UK based energy start-up which aims to provide energy-deprived communities in Kenya with lamps powered by gravity. With the help of Shell, the start-up will bring more than 3,000 lighting devices to Kenya over the course a Õ50 Night TourÕ across 50 communities in the country, to demonstrate how collaboration Ð and the power of gravity Ð can help change lives. Photo/Karel Prinsloo
Nigeria music icon, Yemi Alade, has taken the lead in spreading Shell’s #makethefuture campaign which aims to inspire youths and entrepreneurs for bright energy ideas that can help in the global quest for more and cleaner energy.
The multiple award nominee and winner of the 2015 MTV African Music Award Best Female Artist joined Shell-organized 50 Night tour of Kenya last week to celebrate the benefits and installation of GravityLight in some Kenya communities after she united with Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson and four other music stars in Rio, Brazil on Best Day of My Life music video for #makethefuture.
GravityLight, one of seven energy ideas celebrated in Rio, Brazil in October by Shell, offers a clean, safe, affordable and reliable alternative to other fuel sources including kerosene lamps, which are used in homes by millions of families in Africa, including Nigeria. The low-carbon innovation does not need batteries or sunlight and costs nothing to run. It works by connecting an elevated bag filled with 12kg of rocks or sand to a pulley system.
Each time the weight descends to the ground it powers a generator to create 20 minutes of light.
The Managing Director, Shell Petroleum Development Company and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mr. Osagie Okunbor said: “the event in Kenya brings closer home how innovations and collaborations can help bridge the energy divide in the face of a rapidly growing global population.
“By continuing the conversation on providing a wider, more sustainable mix of energy resources for the world’s growing population, Shell is provoking thoughts on tomorrow’s solution, and supporting young entrepreneurs through our 13-year old LiveWIRE programme.”
Speaking on the relevance of her music to Shell bright energy ideas campaign, Yemi Alade said that her music offered a good platform to draw attention to the energy needs of the world with strong appeal to engaged millennial who form the bulk of her fans.
“Music offers a good platform and this is particularly true in Nigeria where we are working hard to provide the energy the nation badly needs to develop. In my music, I try to encourage people to look at the innovative side of life and this is what the ‘makethefuture seeks to achieve in the energy space. I’m pleased to be part of the energy train.
“GravityLight is really close to my heart as it’s an invention that solves a problem I know only too well. For many years as a girl, I had to use candles and kerosene lamps for hours while studying at night. Now with GravityLight, people have a safer way to study and families can have quality time in evenings. Being part of #makethefuture has been amazing – I’ve seen how it changed lives in Rio, and it’s moving to see it do that again in my home continent.”
Other bright energy innovations being supported by Shell are:
bio-bean – which explores how to reduce the UK’s CO2 emissions from transport by turning coffee dregs into a sustainable transport fuel, Capture Mobility – demonstrates how roadside turbulence from cars and trucks can generate clean power for local communities, MotionECO – uses waste cooking oil to help to create a market for renewable diesel in China (in transport, public services and logistics) and discourage the harmful reuse of cooking oil, Pavegen – converts power from footsteps into renewable energy that can power a community, and
Shell Eco-marathon – a global competition that sees students design ultra-efficient cars, and challenges them to see which can travel furthest on one liter of fuel. [myad]

Agric Minister Showers Blessings On Ebonyi Governor For Banning Sale Of Foreign Rice

audu-ogbe-in-ebonyThe Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbe has showered blessings on the Ebonyi state governor, David Umahi for banning the sale of foreign rice in the state.
Audu Ogbe, who visited Ettem Amagu Rice Farm in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebony state as part of his assessment of agricultural potential of the state  said: “Governor, I hear you banned  the sale of foreign rice in your  state, God bless you for it. I also hear you invited young men to come back from Lagos and work here, God bless you also for it. They will be happier here in this state than living under the bridge or substandard accommodation in Lagos, Abuja or elsewhere.”
The minister, who was accompanied by the Chairman, Presidential Committee on Rice production, Abubakar  Bagudu and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, commended Umahi’s agricultural policy, particularly in ensuring massive rice production in the state.
Ogbeh advised youths to key into agriculture to diversify the economy and to see it as a way out of the present economic recession in the country.
He promised to bring agricultural equipment like rice harvesters, threshers, par- boiling drums, etc. to Ebonyi State.
“By the middle of last week, I had some machines ready for you (Ebonyi State). These include threshers and even new par-boiling drums which operate differently from what women are using. When those machines come, young men will be thought how to enter a farm and harvest rice for farmers. These young men and farmers will make so much money to the extent that they will become millionaires in the villages. So wealth is here (in farming).”

The minister announced the   Federal Government’s plan to plant 1,500 hectares of cashew nuts and set up two cashew roasting plants in Ebonyi State early next year, even as he expressed satisfaction with what he saw at Ettem Amagu and Akueze Rice Farms.
He described Ebonyi farmers as the real heroes of President Muhammadu Buhari’s push to diversify the nation’s economy especially through agriculture.
“Governor, next year, we shall plant for you 1,500 hectares of cashew nuts per the three senatorial districts in your state. “We shall also build two factories here for roasting cashew.”
He also promised that the Federal Government would rehabilitate the Ettem Amagu Ikwo Dam to encourage dry season rice cultivation in the state.
The minister explained that under Operation 1,037 of the Federal Government, a minimum of 10 dams per state and the FCT would  be built.
This was even as the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele said that the apex bank’s Anchor Borrowers Programme would commence next year to boost farming and tackle challenges confronting farmers.
Emefiele pledged the bank’s readiness to participate in the clearing and re-dredging of the Ettem Amagu Dam.
The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Rice production and governor of Kebbi State, Bagudu, said that what he saw in rice producing states showed that the country has achieved self sufficiency in rice production and should therefore commence plan for rice export.
“Success recorded in the last one year is phenomenal. What we have seen in terms of rice output seems to suggest that the goal of self sufficiency which we hitherto thought will be achieved in 2017 might have already been achieved.”
Governor Umahi had, while welcoming them, commended President Buhari for reviving agriculture in the country.
He expressed the readiness of the state government  to partner the Federal Government in all season farming.
“There are over30 dams in this state. They are recharged by very near streams. So we want assistance from the Federal Government in the area of irrigation. We want assistance in the area of money to the farmers. We want assistance in the area of biomass plants.  The cost of buying diesel and   maintenance is too high; we also need   harvesters to assist our farmers.”
The team also visited the state’s modern rice mills in Oso-Edda and Ikwo where they saw live processed rice rolling out of the machines.
They were also taken to the popular Abakaliki Rice Mill where they witnessed the processing of rice paddies with locally-fabricated machines.
Before departing for the Government House, the team  saw mountains of rice husk in the Abakaliki rice mill  which the Umahi administration plans to use to generate electricity. [myad]
