Telecom’s Tariff Increase And NCC’s Patriotism, By Toby Prince

In the heart of Nigeria’s digital economy, a story of patriotism and resilience unfolds. The telecommunications sector, a driving force behind the country’s growth, has been facing unprecedented challenges. Despite its significant contributions to Nigeria’s social and economic development, the sector has been struggling to keep up with the rising costs of operations.
For nearly a decade, telecom tariffs in Nigeria remained unchanged, while the demand for data and voice services skyrocketed. The cost of operations, however, surged due to rising energy costs, inflation, currency devaluation, and increased costs of importing telecom equipment. These mounting expenses threatened the very foundation of the sector, making it difficult for operators to maintain infrastructure and deliver high-quality services.
In the face of these challenges, telecom operators requested tariff adjustments to reflect the current cost of delivering services. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) carefully considered these proposals, balancing the needs of operators with the interests of consumers. Instead of approving the suggested 100% rate increase, the NCC authorized a maximum adjustment of up to 50% within the current tariff bands.
The NCC plays a vital role in regulating the telecommunications industry in Nigeria, and its actions are guided by the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003. This act empowers the body to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges by telecom operators, ensuring a balance between consumer protection and industry sustainability.
The NCC’s decision to approve tariff adjustments was not taken lightly. It was based on extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. The goal was to strike a balance between the financial realities of telecom operators and the economic pressures faced by Nigerian households and businesses. The approved tariff adjustments were capped at 50%, significantly lower than the 100% increase requested by operators. This decision showcases the NCC’s commitment to creating a telecommunications environment that works for everyone.
To further protect consumers, the NCC mandated telecom operators to implement the approved adjustments transparently and fairly. Meanwhile, operators were also required to educate and inform the public about the new rates, ensuring customers are fully aware of any changes to their billing structures. Additionally, the NCC’s updated Quality of Service Regulations empower it to sanction operators who fail to meet their service obligations.
Nigerians need to understand that the recent tariff adjustments in the telecommunications sector are a necessary step towards ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry. These adjustments will enable operators to invest in infrastructure upgrades and innovation, ultimately providing opportunities for local businesses to thrive.
A robust telecommunications sector is crucial for achieving Nigeria’s digital economy goals, including e-commerce growth, broadband penetration, and digital inclusion. The tariff adjustments will strengthen operators’ contributions to these objectives by providing connectivity to underserved and rural areas, driving innovation, creating jobs, and boosting economic productivity.
Since 2013, telecom operators have grappled with escalating costs without corresponding adjustments to the tariff rates they offered. Without tariff adjustments, operators risk being unable to sustain their operations, leading to service degradation and potential job losses within the industry. This would increase the rate of unemployment in the country, contributing to the hardship the government has been fighting hard to eradicate.
The telecommunications sector is capital-intensive, requiring continuous investment in infrastructure to meet growing demand and improve service quality. The approved tariff adjustments will provide operators with the financial resources needed to invest in network expansion, upgrade existing infrastructure, and enhance customer service. This will ultimately benefit consumers by delivering better connectivity, reduced downtime, and wider network coverage.
It’s worth noting that the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of tariff adjustments aligns with international best practices, ensuring Nigeria stays competitive in the global telecommunications landscape. By maintaining tariffs within the bands outlined in the 2013 NCC Cost Study, the Commission has ensured that the adjustments are both fair and evidence-based.
Furthermore, the NCC’s modest tariff adjustment was influenced by the financial strains that many businesses and households are experiencing. In the context of the broader economy, the long-term benefits of the slight increase in consumer bills far outweigh the immediate costs. Benefits such as expanded coverage, improved network quality, and enhanced customer service will provide greater value to consumers, further ensuring they receive a greater telecommunications experience.
In other to mitigate the impact on vulnerable consumers, the NCC has mandated that operators simplify their tariff structures, and offer affordable plans that will be suitable to different income levels. Additionally, the Commission will continue to monitor the implementation of the adjustments to ensure compliance with its guidelines and protect consumers from exploitation. This action validates the Commission’s goal of ensuring that Nigeria remains at the forefront of digital innovation and connectivity in Africa.
As a regulator, it is obvious that the NCC is not only protecting consumers, but also supporting operators, indigenous vendors, and suppliers who form the pillar of the telecom industry. It is worthy of note to state that the adjustments have no relation to the ongoing tax reform conversation. This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of a thriving telecommunications sector are felt across all segments of society.
The tariff adjustments approved by the NCC are a necessary step toward addressing the financial and operational challenges faced by telecom operators. Far from being complicit in any alleged exploitation, the NCC has demonstrated commendable patriotism and a deep commitment to balancing consumer protection with industry sustainability. The NCC’s actions in approving the tariff adjustments reflect patriotism and national progress at its finest.
By enabling operators to invest in infrastructure, improve service quality, and support indigenous businesses, the NCC is laying the foundation for a more robust and inclusive telecommunications sector that can measure up with its international counterparts all across the globe. The adjustments are not merely a response to current market conditions but a forward-looking strategy that will ensure Nigeria’s telecommunications industry remains a vital driver of economic growth and digital transformation.
As Nigerians, it is very important to view these adjustments as a patriotic move by the NCC to secure the future of connectivity and development in the country. The Commission’s action embodies transparency and accountability, and it serves as a reminder that effective regulation is not about appeasing one stakeholder group over another, but about creating an environment that works for everyone. Through its efforts, the NCC is proving that a stronger, more sustainable telecommunications sector is not just a possibility but a reality within reach in no.

Governor Buni stressed the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving sustainable development, citing progress in infrastructure rehabilitation, livelihood restoration, and the reintegration of displaced persons.
Governor Buni spoke about President Tinubu’s support for the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery and Resilience (RS-SRR) of Boko Haram-affected areas, which has provided a roadmap for coordinated action across the Basin.
“As we embark on the deliberations of this Forum, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to President Tinubu for his political leadership and continuous commitment to advancing peace and resilience in the Lake Chad Basin region.”
The Forum serves as a vital platform for dialogue among regional stakeholders, with the aim of addressing security threats, climate change, and socio-economic disparities while fostering durable solutions for the affected communities.

APC Expels Ex Osun Gov, Aregbesola

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled the former two-term governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.
A letter from the leadership of the party in the State said that he was expelled for anti-party activities. He was accused of having violated Article 21 of the APC constitution.
The letter, titled: “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You,” said that after an investigation, the State Executive Committee (SEC) reviewed the Disciplinary Committee’s findings and resolved to expel him from the party.
The letter said that the expulsion was based on clear evidence of Aregbesola’s actions, which were seen as detrimental to the unity and integrity of the APC.
It asked Aregbesola, who served as Interior minister under ex President Muhammadu Buhari, to stop presenting himself as a member of the party or act on its behalf in any capacity.
This came a few days after Aregbesola’s faction, the Omoluabi Progressives, announced its decision to leave the APC.
The group’s spokesperson, Oluwaseun Abosede, explained that the decision was made during a meeting attended by stakeholders from all 332 wards in Osun State, citing issues such as unfair treatment of members and neglect within the party structure.
The Omoluabi Progressives, led by Aregbesola, was also blamed for contributing to the APC’s loss in the 2022 governorship election, which saw the emergence of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Failure Of Local Suppliers Has Forced Dangote Refinery To Import Crude Oil From US

Dangote Refinery

Failure of local suppliers to meet demand has forced the Dangote Petroleum Refinery to now buy 12 million barrels of crude oil from United States for its refinery operations.
Report coming from the giant refinery in Lagos said that lack of local supply has hindered the new $20 billion refinery to reach full refining capacity.
Recall that the refinery had earlier scheduled to reach its 650,000 barrels per day capacity in June this year, 2025.
Sources said that low local crude supply from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has however posed special challenge to the attainment of the schedule.
They said that the 12 million barrels of crude has already left the United States and will land in Nigeria next month.
According to the news from African Report, quoting an inside source: “About 12 million barrels of crude have departed the US and should arrive in Nigeria by February.”
Dangote Petroleum Refinery is said to be importing more crude oil as supply from the NNPC becomes insufficient for fuel production at the $20 billion Lekki-based facility.
Officials at the plant said that the facility has ramped up production to about 500,000 barrels per day, with the target of hitting the 650,000bpd mark by June this year.
The NNPC is reportedly struggling to supply 350,000bpd to the Dangote refinery from the 450,000bpd crude meant for Nigeria’s local consumption.
With its current production capacity of 500,000bpd, officials said there is a need to look beyond the shores of Nigeria for the feedstock.
It was said that the feedstock needed by the refinery daily cannot be solely supplied by the state-owned oil company, NNPC.
In July 2024, President Bola Tinubu had ordered the NNPC to sell crude oil to local refineries in naira.
According to the crude oil production forecast of producing oil companies and the refining requirement of functional refineries in Nigeria signed by the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, the Dangote refinery would require 550,000 barrels of a blend of Nigerian crude oil daily, 17.05 million barrels monthly, and 99.55 million barrels between January and June 2025.
The Dangote refinery is already building eight more tanks to store imported crude. The facility is planning to stockpile imported crude oil as local supplies become unreliable.
Officials of the refinery were quoted as saying that low crude supply from the NNPC “is driving import dependence.”
The building of eight additional tanks will see crude storage capacity at the refinery jump by 41.67 per cent to 3.4 billion litres.
“Importing crude from other countries instead of buying locally means that our crude stockpiles will have to be higher,” the Vice President in charge of the oil and gas business at Dangote Industries, Devakumar Edwin, was quoted as having said recently.
In May 2024, the refinery reportedly issued a term tender for the purchase of two million barrels of West Texas Intermediate Midland crude monthly for 12 months starting in July last year, amounting to 24 million barrels of crude in one year.

JAMB Fixes January 31 For Beginning Of Sale Of UTME Forms, Announce Exam Fees, Others

JAMB Registrar Prof. Oloyede

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced key dates for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
According to JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the sale of forms will begin on January 31, 2025, and close on March 5, 2025.
Professor Oloyede said that for direct entry candidates, the sale of application documents and e-PIN vending will begin on March 10, 2025, and end on April 7, 2025.
He said that the mock UTME is scheduled for February 23, 2025, while the main UTME will occur on March 8, 2025 — just three days after registration ends and barely 6weeks from today.
The Registrar said that candidates registering for UTME with a mock exam will pay ₦8,200, while those opting for UTME only (without the mock) will pay ₦7,200. A trial-testing mock, exclusively for underage candidates or those seeking Computer-Based Test (CBT) experience, will cost ₦5,700. Direct Entry candidates will also pay ₦5,700.
Prof. Oloyede explained that a mock UTME has been introduced specifically for candidates below the age of 16, adding that the initiative is not for admission purposes but is intended to allow underage candidates to test their abilities in preparation for future exams.
He emphasized that candidates must be at least 16 years old on or before September 30, 2025, to qualify for admission into universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education.
“However, gifted candidates under 15 years may be considered if they score at least 280 in the UTME and perform exceptionally in their Senior Secondary Certificate and post-UTME examinations.
The JAMB Registrar reiterated the enforcement of the 16-year age limit for the 2025 UTME registration, stressing that JAMB has faced legal challenges in the past regarding age requirements, leading to the adoption of 16 years as the minimum age for tertiary admissions.
A previous attempt to raise the age limit to 18, announced by former Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman, was reversed following public outcry.
His successor, Dr. Tunji Alausa, suspended the 18-year benchmark in November 2024.
Prof. Oloyede disclosed that 870 computer-based test (CBT) centers had been screened and provisionally listed for the 2025 UTME, compared to 747 centers in 2024.
He also encouraged candidates not seeking immediate admission but wishing to familiarize themselves with the CBT format to register for the trial-testing mock exam.
This year’s updates reflect JAMB’s commitment to improving the UTME process while maintaining adherence to age and academic performance standards for tertiary admissions.
How to Score 300+ In 2025 JAMB
Early Studies: Most students make the mistake of waiting till the wee hour before reading for examinations. That is a recipe for failure. It is said that those who fail to plan, plan to fail. This is true, in that, studying when the examination is at hand leads to little or no retention of knowledge and that can be detrimental to the outcome of the examination. Start reading and preparing for the examination months earlier. In fact it is advisable to start reading and studying before the commencement of the examination registration.
Be aware of your capacity: we all have different learning capacities. Whereas there are people who can learn and grab something in two hours, others need eight hours of study to grab and understand the same thing. You must know and be sincere with yourself of the category you fall under and work towards it accordingly. If it takes you time to comprehend in class or while studying, start studying at a time that would allow you to cover all the materials you need before the time for the examination. This will help you in being more confident and ready for the examination.
Furthermore, you should know your subject combination and work on the subject you’re not so good at. For instance, if you are looking to apply study Engineering in the higher institution, you would need to have mathematics as one of your subject combination. If you are a student who finds mathematics hard, dedicate more of your time to studying the mathematics. Practice it often to help you gain a mastery of it and ask questions where you’re confused.
Join Study Groups: The importance of joining study groups or online classes can not be overemphasized. Thank God for technology and civilization which has made the world a global village. Find a tested and trusted tutorial group or online class that is keen on ensuring that students pass their examinations. A highly recommended group with highly effective tutors that can help you realise your dream school is the Allschool JAMB tutorials which is run yearly. This tutorial class has had many testimonies from students who were able to ace their examinations. Studying as a group helps in the sharing of information more effectively.
Understand how JAMB Examination works:
JAMB examination is not like other examinations like WAEC or NECO, JAMB has it’s own unique style and format which s a student needs to follow. Understanding the format for sitting for JAMB will enable you to works towards getting yourself acquainted with how the examination works. JAMB examinations are in form of Mutiple Choice Questions also know as MCQs.
What this implies is that a question is asked and options are given with the expectations that students would choose or select the most appropriate option for the question.
Practice Time Management: Most students fail to understand that, when it comes to JAMB examinations, they do not have the luxury of time. JAMB examination time is limited, they system is design in such a way that once a students logs in and begins, a timer is automatically activated. Once the time is up, irrespective of whether a student is done with he examination or not, such student will be logged out and that would be then end of the examination. There have been stories of many students who performed poorly in their UTME not because they didn’t know the answers to the questions, but because they didn’t have enough time to answer all the questions. Do not dwell so much on a particular question.
Once you can remember the answer to a particular one, leave it and go to the next. After you’re done and you still have time on your side, you can the revisit the question and answer it. Note that all questions in JAMB carries equal marks. It’s therefore unwise to dwell so much on a particular question.
Be knowledgeable in the use of computer gadgets: unlike the system before where UTMEs were written with pencil and paper, the UTME is now computer based and the examination is known as CBT (Computer Based Tests). As a student who intends to succeed in the examination, you need to be able to navigate around a computer.
This will make it easier for you to answer questions and move to the next without delays. Students who are computer illiterate have had to complain in previous years of their inability to pass the UTME due to their lack of knowledge on how a computer works. You can avoid this by getting yourself equipped with the right knowledge on how to operate a computer.
Eat Healthy: although this ordinarily does not sound like an academic advice, but eating healthy helps you to be in your best form. Do not study when you’re hungry, it is hard to comprehend anything in such a situation. Also ensure you have enough sleep to rest and calm your brain.
Register and Arrive Early: Try to register for your UTME on time to avoid anxiety and uncertainty.
Late registration can play with your mental health which can then result to poor performance even after doing all that has been listed above. Also make sure you are at your examination centre in tim for your examination. Going at least forty-five minutes earlier to the time given to you will be an ideal thing to do.

About 200 CBN Staff Affected By Forcefully Disengagement Cry Out Over Alleged Discrimination

Over two hundred staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), including executives, who were forcefully disengaged in the name of rationalisation are now crying foul against the discriminatory manner in which the Cardoso led management is going about the exercise.
The affected staff berated the CBN management for not coming up with the optional ‘early exit’ window for all staff to embrace as was later adopted but rather chose to humiliate them unjustly in flagrant disregard of the Bank’s human resources policy.
They described the early exit programme as a welcome after thought, although it was viciously implemented without considering the negative impact on the system.
The affected staff, in a petition, further said that the CBN must have lost most of its best hands in the areas of monetary policy, research, banking examination, communication, payment system development and strategy among others.
The concerned staff advised those responsible for the central bank’s oversight to be watchful of the policies of the Bank as either forceful disengagement or early retirement of experienced staff portends serious gaps for such a strategic institution.
The staff also questioned the claim by Muhammad Bala Bello, the Deputy Governor (Corporate Services) that the disengaged staff were retired and paid their full benefits, saying that some of them went home with negative account balances.
They contended that their careers were abruptly terminated without justification or compliance with due process for the conduct of a restructuring / redundancy process as enshrined in the Central Bank of Nigeria Act and CBN Human Resources manual.
Some of the affected staff, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, said that the CBN management towed the line of discrimination from the beginning which has greatly impinged on their fundamental human rights, self esteem and caused untold hardship to their families and other dependants in addition to truncating their professional careers.
They called on the CBN Management revisit their cases with good conscience and equity without further delay in order to be on the good side of history.
The CBN is currently contending with scores of litigation at the National Industrial Court arising from decision of the Cardoso led management to disengage several staff abruptly between March and June 2024.
Those staff felt maltreated in the exercise have since approached the courts for redress.

Gov Ododo’s 12-Month Action-Packed Leadership In Kogi, By Yusuf Ozi-Usman

When Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo mounted the leadership as Executive Governor of Kogi State on January 27, 2024 (exactly a year today), the signs showed the direction he wanted to go in the governance of the state.
Though there seemed to be an early morning stumbling block in the form of legal battle waged by the candidate of the opposition’s Social Democratic Party (SDP), Murtala Ajaka in the contest over who won the November 11, 2023 election, the new governor, elected under the umbrella of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), however did not allow such stumbling block to distract him from focusing his eyes on the ball.
Though many outside the state might have regarded him as a greenhorn in politics and leadership, a lot of people who knew his pedigree, having been nurtured quietly by the system, and groomed by the immediate past executive governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, expected the high standard of performance he had exhibited in the last twelve months.
One of the first challenges that confronted him, which was widespread across the country, in particular, many parts of the North, was insecurity.
It began on May 13, 2024, less than four months after he assumed office, when bandits raided the Confluence University of Science and Technology in Osara, kidnapping several students who were studying for their first-semester exams
Unfortunately, two of the kidnapped students, James Michael Anajuwe, a 100-level Information Technology student, and Musa Hussein, a 100-level Software Engineering student, were killed by their abductors despite negotiations with their parents
Initially, 21 students were rescued, and later, the remaining eight kidnapped students were also rescued through a joint effort by the Kogi State Government and security agencies.
The university declared a three-day mourning period to honor the memory of the two students who lost their lives.
Governor Ododo rose to quench the fear that the men of the underworld were trying to inject in the minds of the populace, particularly students,by first, visiting the campus of the institution, and recruiting more security people, including, largely, local hunters.
As a matter of fact, since assuming office on January 27, 2024, Governor Ododo has prioritized the safety and security of the citizens as a cornerstone of his administration, for, without security, all other development efforts would result to zero.
Under his leadership, and because of the proactive measures he put in place, the State experienced a notable decrease in crime rates. A sense of safety and security were instilled in the populace. Governor Ododo’s approach to enhancing security is comprehensive, involving collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community engagement and the implementation of technology-driven solutions.
One of the key achievements of Governor Ododo’s administration is the strengthening of law enforcement agencies within the state. Increased funding and resources have enabled the police force and other security outfits to operate more effectively, enhancing their ability to combat crime.
The governor has also advocated for better training for these agencies to further improve their operational capabilities.
Governor Ododo’s Community Policing Initiatives have been particularly successful in fostering cooperation between law enforcement and local communities. By establishing neighborhood watch groups and encouraging citizen participation in reporting crimes, the administration has created a safer environment throughout the state. These initiatives have resulted in a noticeable decrease in crime rates in various parts of the State, earning the admiration of the people.
The Government Ododo was able to introduce surveillance systems and emergency response applications which have contributed to improve monitoring capabilities across urban areas. They have also allowed for quicker responses to incidents and enhanced overall situational awareness among security personnel.
More impressive Ododo’s government has found it necessary and compelling to collaborate with Federal Security Agencies, such as the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS). Joint operations of such security architecture has led to addressing the menace of kidnapping that plagued various regions within Kogi State before the administration came on board. These collaborations have resulted in successful operations that have disrupted criminal activities within the major flash points in the state.
It will be recalled that shortly after the combative efforts through the Governor’s efforts Usman Ododo was glad to receive rescued CUSTECH students and subsequent provided gadgets for trained 1,050 Hunters to Support Security operations in the state is fast breading the desired results.
Earlier in his administration, the Governor unveiled new security vehicles, for security operatives in the state. He restated his Government’s commitment to security of all. The Governor also unveiled Metropolitan Quick Response Squad to tackle security challenges in the state.
All of these efforts have continued to make Kogi State inhabitable for criminals elements and the state is gradually becoming a safer habitat for peace loving Nigerians and foreigners to be conducting their business activities without any fear of harassment, intimidation, kidnapping or loss of lives and properties. Kogi State is fast becoming the leading safest state in Nigeria.
On a general note, just a year down the line, Governor Ododo has been able to demonstrate unparalleled leadership and a deep commitment to the progress and prosperity of the state.
His one year in office has been marked by groundbreaking achievements across many sectors of the economy, making him a beacon of hope, a unifying force and the pride of Kogi people.
Governor Ododo’s focus, empathy, and unwavering dedication have not only earned him the love and admiration of the people but also cemented his reputation as one of the most impactful governors in Nigeria’s political landscape.
From infrastructure development to youth empowerment, and from healthcare to education, his administration has achieved feats that many would have deemed impossible in such a short time.
Governor Ododo’s one year in office has been nothing short of transformative.
In the agricultural sector, his administration has boosted food security by providing modern farming tools, fertilizers, and support for smallholder farmers, placing the state at the forefront of agricultural productivity.
His strides in healthcare are equally commendable, with investments in hospital infrastructure, medical equipment, and community health outreach programs ensuring that no one is left behind.
Education has also seen a dramatic improvement under his leadership, with better schools, scholarships for students and training for teachers, creating a solid foundation for the state’s future.
Infrastructure development remains one of his hallmarks, with numerous road projects, bridges and rural electrification initiatives improving connectivity and quality of life across the state.
Youth empowerment and job creation have been central to his agenda, with innovative programs designed to equip young people with skills, funding, and opportunities to thrive.
