INEC Chalks Off 74 Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has removed 74 political parties from its deregister.
The Commission’s Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu today, February 6 at a press conference in Abuja.
Giving reasons for the decision, Yakubu said the deregistered parties failed to meet various criteria stipulated by the constitution during the elections.
The INEC chairman said the number of Nigeria’s political parties are now 18.
More details later.

Adnan Bostaji, Ambassador With A Difference, Bows Out, By Yusuf Ozi Usman

“As long as I am alive and on this seat, I will make sure you and your wife perform the next hajj (2020)”

These were the words of Ambassador Adnan bin Mahmoud Bostaji, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria when I visited him in his office and I pleaded with him to make way for my wife to join me in the annual work-pilgrimage which, for the past couple of years, I have been privileged to be part of. Senior journalists from no fewer than 20 countries, including Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, etc are part of the team.

When therefore, on Tuesday, February 4, I casually came across a news about the death of Ambassador Adnan Bostaji in a facebook post, I was petrified and perturbed and shaken.

Bostaji dead???

In a sense of confusion, I began to place calls to his aides in the embassy; first to his secretary, Remi and then Isa Mohammed and then to the embassy’s general lines and finally to Abubakar. It was only the line of Abubakar that went through. He confirmed that Ambassador Adnan died in the early hours of that day, February 4. That he returned from Saudi Arabia the previous day, February 3 hale and hearty. He did not wake up alive on February 4.

So, Ambassador Adnan Mahmoud Bostaji is truly truly dead?

Just like that?

This was the man who oozed with life, with fresh ideas on how to move his country forward within the confines of his operation, with friendly disposition and with doggedness to make the difference from the status quo.

The late diplomat was virtually at home in Nigeria with everyone, both those in high places and the lowly ones. He was so innovative, generous and friendly that many organizations had had cause to honour him with awards. In short, his love for Nigeria was very transparent, as was shown in his mien and psyche each time he encountered Nigerians. His secretary is a Nigerian and most of his staff members are Nigerians.

Ambassador Adnan enjoyed attending public functions to which he was invited. One of such was the public presentation of a book on Qur’anic translation into Ebira language, which was staged at the National Mosque sometime last year. He actually promised to assist in publishing the book in multiple copies through his home country. When the committee on the translation visited him in his office later to show appreciation, he reiterated his desire to link up with his home government to facilitate the multiple production of the book. And the book is still in process… but he died!!!

Only last week, the late Ambassador had a meeting with Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari and seized the opportunity to cement the cordial diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia in many areas.

Ambassador Adnan Bostaji actually introduced new ways of carrying out diplomatic duties, interacting freely with whoever would add value to what he had set to achieve. His attitude to work might have been influenced by the creative and modern way the Crown Prince, Muhammad Bin Salman back home,  has allowed the diplomatic relations to flow. But there was still something special about Adnan Bostaji.

As a matter of fact, those before him were never as open in dealing with none governmental personalities as late Ambassador Adnan Bostaji. The late Ambassador was able to cultivate friendships with people across various professional groups, especially with journalists.

He so much believed in openness in governance that he would turn in all kinds of activities of his embassy, and that of his government back home, for publication. Indeed, there was no week that he would not forward interesting development either within the embassy or from Saudi Arabia to me for publication. And he always felt elated and showed open appreciation whenever he saw a story from him published.

Before he was appointed as Ambassador and deployed to Nigeria in 2016, Adnan Bostaji had served his country in various capacities and country.

He was born in Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian Federal Capital in 1966 and did his early education, upto secondary school in the same city. He graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in 1985 from King AbdulAziz University in Jeddah and a Diploma in Diplomatic Studies Institute in Riyadh in 1988.

He started his career by joining the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Later, he was appointed deputy to the ambassador at the Saudi Embassy in Tehran from 1991 until 1998.

Adnan Bostaji also worked at the administration of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1998 until 2000.

In 2000, he was appointed as chargé d’affaires at the Saudi Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark, until 2003.

He then worked as head of economic affairs and international organizations at the Saudi Embassy in London from 2003 until 2005. He also joined the office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Makkah as director from 2003 until 2016.

Before his appointment as a Saudi ambassador to Nigeria, Adnan Bostaji served as deputy to the ambassador at the Saudi Embassy in Berlin in 2016.

With such towering credentials, late Ambassador Adnan Bostaji set to work and actually proved his mettle in diplomatic duties and even human relations. As a matter of fact, he showed wherever he went and whatever he did, that he had nothing to hide; that he loved the company of good people, irrespective of colour and creed, and above all, that he loved his job and the country of his birth.

The late Ambassador actually demonstrated the true sense of service to his country, to humanity and to his family, and was never found wanting.

It was not for nothing that President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, in a tribute to him, described Adnan Bostaji as “passionate friend of Nigeria.” I too, and many others who encountered him would describe him simply as a friend, a brother and a committed family man. He was a man that was so much in love with humanity. He lived a life as prescribed by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) when he enjoined us to “live as if you will never die forever, and live as if you will die the next moment.”

This Ambassador Adnan Bostaji demonstrated when he told members of the committee on translation of the meaning of Holy Qur’an in Ebira language: “I advise you to hasten up the work because I may not be around by the time you would have finished it.” And his words to me: “as long as I am alive and on the seat…”

Now that he’s gone, where do we pick up the pieces?

His death once more reminds us of the reality of life, for, from Allah we all came, and to Him we are all surely returning.

Rest well, Ambassador Adnan bin Mahmoud Bostaji, in the bosom of the glorious Allah, till we meet again.

I Lost 26 People, Including My Driver In Midnight Gunmen Attack – Tawari Chief

Members of the Mental Health and Wellness Initiative interact with the chief

Traditional head of Tawari community in Kogi State, the Aguma of Tawari, 78-year-old Alhaji Yusuf Idris Tawari has recounted how he lost 26 people, including his driver and Chief Iman of the community to yet to be identified gunmen that attacked the community on January 2 this year.
Yusuf, who spoke when members of the Mental Health and Wellness Initiative, a Non-Governmental organization visited the village to assess the extent of the effect of the attack, said: “I lost 25 people in one night and my driver who died in Abuja making the 26th casualty. The chief Imam of the community was writing his sermon for the Friday prayer when they broke into his room and shot him at close range. Look at the village almost completely deserted. The few people left are living in fear.
“They burnt down my house and my car. My driver died in Abuja from the thick fumes inhaled from the inferno. I escaped by the grace of God.
“We are traumatized and that’s why I was excited about the news of your coming to see the carnage”.

The leader and founder of the NGO, Salihat Badamasiuy alson visited the Administrator of Kogi local government council, Barrister Musa Muhammed Tanko at the council secretariat in Koton Karfe where she condemned the gruesome attack.
She appealed to the local authorities and other spirited individuals to offer support to the community.
“We are here to spare our thought for the people of Tawari community. The ugly incident is ungodly, wicked and condemnable as it has left a permanent scar on the psyche on the residents of that community.
“They need every moral support they can get to heal them of the trauma and depression this unfortunate event has caused them.”
Ms. Salihat promised that her NGO would collaborate with willing authorities to provide relief to the people of Tawari.
That was even as the council administrator commended the gesture by the group and pledged his support in areas his office would be needed to bring smile on the face of the people again.
“I must commend your decision to take this bold step in sparing thought for the people of Tawari. You have taken a giant stride, working on healing the psyche of this people and as the chief executive of the local council, I pledge my support in whatever capacity required of me to bring smile to the face of the sad people of Tawari community.”
The group also paid homage to His Royal Majesty, Alhaji Abdulrazak Gambo IsaKoto, Ohimege Igu of KotonKarfe.
While thanking the group for the rare focus on the mental well-being of the society, the Ohimege described the visit as timely as it was strategic.
“Tawari is not only a remote community but has a rich history. What happened there can only be likened to a terrorist attack on the defenseless people.”

It was gathered that over 50 houses, including the chief’s palace, clinic, the oldest church in the community and school buildings among others were burnt down while others are ridden with bullets or vandalized.
Alhaji Yusuf said that he has been suing for peace and has repeatedly warned the youth of the community against reprisal attack even as he commended the government of Kogi State for the prompt response to the incident.
The village was attacked under the cover of darkness as it is yet to witness electricity. Most of the power generators on which the residents depend to light up their homes have been burnt down. Motorbikes which serve as the major source of income to the youth were burnt in large numbers.

The Tawari chief, Alhaji Yusuf appealed to government at all levels, civil society organizations and resourceful individuals to come to their aid in their spirited effort towards rebuilding the community and facilitate the return of the displaced people.
Although many have since condemned the wicked attack, one month after, no suspect has been arrested and not much has been done to alleviate the consequences of the attack on the community.
Chief Tawari thanked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for the relief materials donated and promised to ensure judicious sharing of the items to the affected people.

North Launches Own Security Outfit, ‘SHEGE KA FASA

Operation Shege Ka fasa | Photo credit: Sun News online

Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has unveiled Northern Regional Security group known as “SHEGE KA FASA.” The initiativev is expected to be ratified by the northern governors as part of measures to address security challenges within the region.
Addressing newsmen today, February 5 shortly before unveiling the outfit, CNG said that for the past 12 years, the North has struggled with disabling challenges that include dwindling economy, rising poverty and more worrying, a crippling security situation that has taken a huge toll on lives, property and the overall cohesion of the region.
The spokesperson of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman who told newsmen that the.security challenges manifested in 2008 in the form of a deadly insurgency from the Northeast and within a short time, spread to other parts of the region and virtually turned the entire region into a battlefield.
The Coalition noted that while the insurgency raged, other disturbances were created in the region in the form of cattle rustling that pitched northern communities against each other.
“A new dimension was introduced to the farmers/herders conflict which gradually deteriorated into an uncontrollable proportion and deepened the artificial rift between communities in the region.
“This trend suddenly metamorphosed into a deadly armed banditry and kidnapping for ransom which is recycled for arms and drugs. This is in addition to another frustrating trend of the theft and forced trafficking in northern children to other parts of the country for reasons that are largely dubious.
“The culmination of these security challenges has for the past decade turned the entire region into a house of horror with violent killings reported on a daily basis, communities displaced with formal and informal IDP camps spreading across the region.
“The situation today, on most northern highways, innocent travelers are waylaid, robbed and abducted, towns and villages attacked and sacked by bandits who have created an atmosphere of palpable fear across the region.
“As the situation grows more desperate by the day with the North as the most porous and vulnerable, with northerners as the most distressed and estranged.
CNG stressed that it is absolutely impossible to expect that communities would continue to fold their arms while criminals invade their abodes, kill, abduct and displace them.
“By this, today we unveil the symbols for the Shege Ka Fasa outfit which would be formally inaugutated in the coming few weeks when all necessary legal processes might have been completed or formally adopted and ratified by the northern states governors.” It stated.
CNG, therefore, observed that, there is an apparent correlation between the current security situation and the unchecked proliferation of hard drugs and other dangerous substances and that the current security challenges in the region are therefore driven by the proliferation of firearms and hard drugs which are deliberately introduced into the region by outside interests.
It also observed that the drug and firearms trade is fueled by illegal funds channeled by international financial criminals such as Yahoo boys desperate to launder money into the country and that already, this trend has completely undermined the economic and social fabrics of the North, and is responsible for the rampant social problems like banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other forms of security challenges witnessed today.
“That the current desperate situation in the North can be largely contained and eventually controlled by intensifying the task of anticipating and checkmating the manoeuvres of all criminal elements and blocking the supply channels for such dangerous merchandise as firearms and drugs.
“That this task can only be successfully achieved with the active involvement of the members of all northern communities that are at the receiving end of the apparent security lapses.
“That in the prevailing circumstances, the only option, is to resort to voluntary self-defense mechanisms in line with initiatives taken by other regions that are even least affected in comparison to what obtains in the North”.
CNG, therefore, resolved that “Against the backdrop of these concerns and observations, the Coalition of Northern Groups does not wish to remain silent or passive and allow things that affect the North and potentially cause greater instability in the country to continue unchecked.
“Aware also of the need for concerted efforts to assist the Federal Government to restore peace and security and to disband all militias and armed groups in northern Nigeria to ensure that no group has the capacity to challenge the State in its prerogative to maintain law and order, and protect citizens’ lives and properties, the CNG has:
“Initiated practical measures for the setting up of a northern regional security outfit to compliment the efforts of the police, the military, the security services to detect, expose and defeat all criminal machinations and carry out specific and general tasks that would realign the attitude and thinking of the public with the ideals and objectives of the founding fathers of the region.
“The outfit, codenamed “SHEGE KA FASA” is designed to be the vanguard of the entire North encompassing every ethnic group and religion and to be deeply patriotic in its operation.
“In addition to performing general complimentary tasks for enhancing security in the region, the outfit shall also Coordinate operations against the influx of hard drugs into the North, take steps to neutralize all centers of gravity for the supply, manufacturer and distribution of such drugs and other dangerous substances.”
The group said that the outfit will Coordinate vigilance to check and expose illegal arms trade, supply channels and possession. Guard against the theft and illegal traffic in kids and other vulnerable sections of the northern population and expose operations of fraudsters like the Yahoo boys whose ill gotten wealth forms part of the source of funding for the drug and arms trade.
The group called the attention of all governors of northern states to the urgent necessity to join their counterparts in the South-West and South-East by adopting and ratifying this initiative for northern regional security and providing the necessary legal framework for its operation in order to secure the lives of the people that are in constant threat.
It also resolved to formalize this request by writing to the governors through the Northern Governors Forum and to the leaderships of traditional, religious and cultural institutions in the region.
It restated that if the state governments and other leaders of the region fail to take action to protect the region the way their southern counterparts are doing, adding that CNG is willing to follow through with all the processes of obtaining the required legal backing for the outfit from the relevant federal authorities.

CAN Sowing Seed Of Religious Discord, Contrary To Words Of Bible – Presidency

Femi Adesina

The Nigeria’s presidency has alerted the nation of the move by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to sow discord between Muslims and Christians in the country, contrary to the teachings of the Holy Bible.

“We urge CAN to desist from disinformation which can further divide Nigerians. The letter and spirit of the Holy Bible do not support discord, which CAN’s allegations are liable to cause.”

Special Adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, made the points in a statement today, February 5, in reaction to what he called “unfounded allegations” by the CAN about the payment or non-payment of ransom for the release of the Chibok and Dapchi schoolgirls.

He said that media reports quoted CAN’s Director of Legal and Public Affairs, Kwamkur Samuel to have said inter alia: “Nigerians need to know, if they have not known the reason why the Presidency could not pay ransom to rescue Chibok girls. It is because 80% to 90% of the girls are Christians. The reason why Dapchi girls’ ransom was quickly paid and they were returned is the discovery that most of the girls were Muslims except Leah Sharibu who is still in captivity.”

Femi Adesina recalled that when the media in August 2018 quoted a United Nations Report alleging that the Federal Government paid a “huge ransom” for the release of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls on March 21, 2018, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, immediately disputed the report, insisting that no ransom was paid, “little or huge.”

“According to the Minister, “There must be a conclusive evidence to support such a claim. Without that, the claim remains what it is – a mere conjecture.”

The presidential spokesman then asked: “Who should Nigerians or CAN rather believe, if there is good faith?”

He stressed that the Christian body need not be antagonistic to every attempt by the administration to move Nigeria forward, before it can champion or defend the Christian faith.

“President Muhammadu Buhari made it very clear in 2015 that if ransom needed to be paid to free the Chibok schoolgirls, he would pay. That is a testament to his commitment to get the girls back.

“Notwithstanding our different faiths, we are all stakeholders in the promotion of peace in our fatherland. And the Holy Bible enjoins us to, “Seek peace, and pursue it.”

Buhari Cautions CAN Against Playing Into The Hands Of Enemies Of State

President Muhammadu Buhari has acknowledged that Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has the right to protest against the insecurity in the country, but cautioned it against playing into the hands of the enemies of the state.
He said that CAN’s recent street protests represent the peaceful right of all Nigerians to protest and to express their views on matters of religion, ethics, politics and society.
In a statement today, February 4, by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, the President said that in Nigeria, some groups rally against the government instead of the enemy.
“This is not right. It has the effect of playing into the hands of the enemy of the state.”
The President stressed that the Nigerian state will not defeat the terrorists, “nor speed the return for those citizens, young and old, taken by them by division in our own ranks. To pull apart is to play into the hands of the terrorists: this is what they (terrorists) want.”
The President is not comfortable that CAN based its protests solely on what he called  “shocking, unacceptable death of Pastor Lawan Andimi at the hands of Boko Haram.”
The President reminded CAN that all lives, including that of the Christians and Muslims are sacred, adding: “whether you are Christian or Muslim, all Nigerians and their beliefs must be respected.
“The duty of all of us is to uphold the rights of others to worship according their faith – and to respect the rights of each other to do so freely in the spirit of brotherhood and respect – and without interference.
“This means, however, that we must stop false claims that only serve to divide one community against the other. There is no place in Nigeria for those who politicise religion.
In the light of this, the CAN-inspired prayers and street enlightenment in our cities are much welcome as sensitizers to the need for ALL CITIZENS irrespective of faith, religion or language to accept their duty and role in law enforcement, to prevent crime in all its manifestations, be it corruption, theft, terrorism, banditry or kidnapping. “Without citizen involvement, there is no miracle with which less than half-a-million policemen can effectively protect a population of 200 million.
“CAN is right to arouse popular consciousness to this duty to the state.
“One more thing is this: it is the added need for citizen-consciousness to stand up for nation. Nigerians, only Nigerians can defend their nation against these abhorrent killings and all sorts of crimes worrying us as a nation.
“From the prayers and advocacy by CAN, citizens need to take an important lesson, which is, that our people must rally around the flag. Together, they rise to defeat the enemy and defend the state.”

US Signs MoU To Return Over $300 Million Abacha Loot, Commends Buhari’s Fight Against Corruption

The government of the United States of America has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to return $308 million Sani Abacha loot, even as it commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s personal commitment to the anti-corruption crusade in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by Morgan Ortagus, Spokesperson of the State Department at the end of the signing of the agreement between the U.S. government, the Bailiwick of Jersey, and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the return of more than $308 million stolen by late General Sani Abacha , the US government also  pledged their commitment to continue to support all other efforts by stakeholders to combat corruption at all levels in Nigeria .
The statement confirmed that on February 3, 2020, the State Department hosted a ceremony for the signing of an agreement between the U.S. government, the Bailiwick of Jersey, and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the return of more than $308 million to the Nigerian people.
It recalled that in the 1990s, the assets were stolen by former military dictator Sani Abacha, and stashed abroad, saying that more than 20 years later, these assets are being returned to the Nigerian people.
“The funds will be used by the Nigerian Independent Sovereign Authority for three infrastructure projects in strategic economic zones across Nigeria.
“To ensure that the funds are used responsibly and for the good of the nation, the agreement includes mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of these projects as well as external oversight, and it requires Nigeria to repay any funds lost as a result of any new corruption or fraud to the account established to hold the returned assets.
“This return reflects the growing international consensus that countries must work together to ensure stolen assets are returned in a transparent and accountable manner.
“It is also consistent with the commitments both the United States and Nigeria made under the principles agreed to at the 2017 Global Forum on Asset Recovery co-hosted by the United States and the United Kingdom.
“This agreement is a symbol of the weight that the United States government places on the fight against corruption.
“We welcome President Buhari’s personal commitment to that fight, and we will continue to support civil society and other Nigerian efforts to combat corruption at all levels.
“The fight against corruption is an investment in the future of Nigeria.”

Buhari Mourns Amb Adnan, Describes Him As Passionate Friend Of Nigeria
